Second-biggest...  that you know of.  (Mwahahaha.)

I've got a preliminary character write-up in to the GM this morning.  Super thrilled to get started!  :)  How's everyone else coming along?

I'm a bit busy this weekend, so while I'm looking over your sheets it might be a short bit before I properly respond. Everyone is shaping up however.

I've read the Amber book series, played a disastrous game of it once at a convention,

What made it disastrous?

Re: Out of Character Chat
Tentative world write-up for Vortigern's Domain/Residence.  I figured it would/should be more or less public knowledge given it is written up as a Primal Realm.

Vortigern:
Makarth & The Shadow Realm (Primal Realm)

Makarth is a large world, several times the size of earth, filled with different regions of sprawling disparate cultures and states of affairs.  Vast balkanized empires, fractious and warlike leagues of citystates, vast jungles of savage cannibal tribes... all can be found there.  Technology is thus unevenly distributed with the most advanced being high medieval grade amongst the largest empires with more trade and access to knowledge.  More remote kingdoms or tribes can be significantly lower in technological state even down to stone age weapons.  Magic is known yet rare and mysterious.  Sorcerers share their power frugally and even one or two can tip the balance of power for nations.  Sorcerous cults are feared, and rightly so.  They know they have the power to enact their will, and frequently do so.

War, banditry, slavery, organized crime ... these are all common elements throughout the world.  They are facts of life from which there is little respite.  Happiness is taken wherever it may be found but to most people expecting it to last is wishful fantasy.  While all kingdoms and empires pay lip service to the Witch-King and his rule... the demands he makes are few.  Most of the time rulers and dynasties continue as they have from ancient times, plotting scheming and warring on one another as they will.  Yet even the loftiest and mightiest of the thrones of Makarth tremble when a messenger arrives bearing the word of the Witch-King and his will.

Life is astoundingly varied in different regions of the world.  Every area of the world has roughly the biological life common to its earth analog climate... plus a variety of different new fantastic creatures.  Most of these creatures are simply new things of alien biology... but some, more than enough to make people fear the wilderness, are supernatural and frequently predatory.  New forms of life are regularly discovered.  Frequently in unpleasant ways.

Some say they are the dreams of the Witch-King.  His playthings, his experiments, his latest ideas tested on the world.  In many cases they are right.

Makarth is an ancient world with history reaching back before the Dwimmerlaik War and into antiquity.  A contemporary and comparably advanced civilization to ancient Gilead, thought to have also been called Makarth.  An ancient people once dwelled there with a large multiple world spanning civilization.  A people that knew of the Stair, that knew magic and technology both, and built large cities and wonders that spanned multiple worlds.  That civilization did not survive the Dwimmerlaik War.

Yet life and the world of Makarth itself endured even after the war.  Unlike many fallen civilizations during the War, the Dwimmerlaik were somehow distracted in the aftermath of their victory and did not completely destroy Makarth.  Instead civilization was simply toppled and collapsed in on itself.  It has only now risen up the current disparate and varied state with the order, such as it is, that has been imposed by the Witch-King.  If nothing else the rule of the Witch-King has restrained the greater empires of Makarth from being too destructive in their wars with one another and this has kept civilization from toppling all over again more than once.

Makarth contains a Secret Realm (Black Files, pg 6), an alternate world/dimension contained within the Domain itself.  This is called The Shadow Realm and is akin to a dark faerie realm where time and space function differently, frequently at the whim of the Witch-King and to suit his purpose.  The Witch-King has also pulled all of the significant ancient Makarthan ruins that he has found into the The Shadow Realm ... leaving them inaccessible without first accessing his true home there.

The capitol of the Witch-King is a large fortress city called Arn from which the Dark Roads of the Shadow Realm allow impossibly swift travel throughout even the unusually large world of Arn.  Arn itself is a luxurious and sprawling metropolis filled with sorcery, strange inhuman beings and servants, and lore gathered from throughout the multiverse.

It is no secret at all that the Witch-King studies the ancient Makarthan ruins and the secrets they still hold.  Many speculate that they are the reason he chose to take power in Makarth and make his home there.

Re: Out of Character Chat
Enyo's primary playground would be Earth, but I can imagine she may have visited Makarth a time or three, just to toy around with diverting herself in ways that aren't really viable on modern Earth anymore.  She'd likely have striven to cultivate a reputation as a sort of valkyrie-esque figure, maybe approaching something on the order of a Xena-like wandering adventurer.

I've got numbers and background into the GM that I'm basically happy with, so I think I'm more or less good to go unless there turn out to be catastrophic problems with it that I'm not anticipating.  :)

... I just noticed that this game isn't flagged Mature.  If Enyo can't curse like a trucker, I'm going to have to rethink her whole attitude.  Or use a whole f***ing lot of asterisks in her dialogue.  :D

1.)  Game Rating: I'd concur ... Vort isn't intended to be the nicest sort either.

2.) Primal Earth:  Can we get some material on the current state of Primal Earth in setting?  Are we all nominally supposed to be starting from zero there or do we all in theory have our own sphere of influence there already ... etc.  Is this like ... the real world right now = Primal Earth, or are there any deviations that we know of from real earth to equal Primal Earth?

Re: Out of Character Chat
You can have influence and allies on Primal Earth if you pay for it or work out into your background.

The world is exactly our Earth... except magic is a thing, or at least was. Magic is possible here but mostly unknown to the populace except to secret cults and visitors from other other worlds. Presumably the ancient history of the world had more real monsters and heroes in truth. That means there is something of a secret history to the world and it was fought over during the Dwimmerlaik War, but that predates human recorded history by a long while.

Primal Earth has lots of Doors, many of them skipping the Grand Stair and leading directly to parallel Earths, offshoots, alternate time lines and other strangeness. I imagine stories like Oz, Narnia or Wonderland are more likely to happen than in our Earth. There is probably more bubbling under the surface but for the most part it appears to ions our world in every detail.

As for why my one convention game of Amber sucked... nobody playing, including myself, understood the setting or the premise and the gm seemed to salivate at the idea of somehow using our ignorance against us, but as a short one shot it just meant we were all confused about what to do and what the setting was capable of. Everyone left grumbling.

Do the standard RAW NPCs exist (Valla/Lucien etc.) or are we on a blank canvas?

I would support at most a volcanic section or two, perhaps to replace the polar regions, while leaving the rest intact to Rule.  8P

I have nothing against open portal to Venus. But won't you choke to death on the venusian gasses? ;)

Enyo, it's irresponsible! Instantly go build your own world where you are the Lord and Master of Everything. Why trust that people are now willing to stupidly blow everything up? :P
I did so. Vortiger did so. See? It's not that difficult.

How are we coming along here?  Anything else you need from us, O beloved GM?

I hope he's ok too, but at this point I'm leaning towards skepticism that the game is happening.

I can't volunteer for that, sorry, I don't have brain space presently to GM things.

It's been ten days since our GM signed in to this game.  I'm assuming it's not happening.  I'm dropping it from my sticky list.  Someone feel free to rMail me if there's any change here.
