OOC: Game Discussion
I'd like everyone to throw in their game setting ideas here for starters, and I'll kick off with mine, though this is not to stifle anyone else's creative juices in any way.

- Dresden Files ( modern fantasy with noir sensibilities and a kitchen-sink approach to mythology and cosmology ) Excuse for anything goes: because magic, though its kinda limited compared to some other settings.

- Exalted ( Lightly Eastern-flavored medieval fantasy blended with over the top anime-esque action ) Excuse for anything goes: PCs are literally beings made to break the rules of reality, given enough careful study, practice, focus, and energy.

- Overwatch ( near-future sci-fi pulp military ) Excuse for anything goes: This setting's got nanotech, plentiful energy, general/sentient AI, genetic editing, every kind of super-tech in the book.

Again, the setting does not in any way need to be one of the above, I'd be just as pleased to run something else ( as long as I'm familiar enough with the tropes to do a decent job). We'll work on getting to a concensus once we've got a good number of players & posts here to discuss.

Looking forward to seeing everyone else's ideas!!!

So, I had a question. How far endgame is 60 XP? As it seems like a lot for games like this.

Solid question. The most expensive abilities will probably be in the neighborhood of 30XP, and that's as an upgrade to the level below. Cortex Plus, being a generally classless system (just like this GM, haha), includes a budget for player-steered customization beyond the "required options".

XP is less a measure of progress (like D&D) and more a currency, spent to buy character upgrades. Rather than tell everyone to pick and choose X more abilities, Y more SFX, and so on, I'm taking the lazier route of giving you all a budget and a price list and telling you to go nuts, and taking a look at what you want before we go about iterating on rule of cool vs. balanced and setting appropriate.

....did I forget XP prices in the rules thread? I'll add a post. But they'll likely change depending on the setting we all come up with. Don't sweat it too much, for now.

So, for the setting ideas, I liked the idea of a modern age Exalted.

Hello, everyone!

My vote is for something completely unrelated to reality, or at least really far removed from it. I could do a modern-esque Exalted provided that it is not a. "canonical" Exalted, because I don't want to be tied down by canon, and b. it bears very little resemblance to the real world.

My thought: a world where a thousand years have passed since a cataclysmic conflict that left the world in ruins. Several groups in power still wield a lot of the secrets that enabled the conflict, but they keep them under wraps and strictly secret. Most of the world thinks that "normal" technology is all that's left and that the Powerful Ways are gone.

Until one of our number pulls the group together because they all have "powers...."

Thoughts?

So, Clarke's Third Law in full effect?

I'm not 100% on-board with that particular plot, but I can certainly draw plenty of elements from it. PCs tend to have powers beyond the norm anyhow, and lost/ancient technology giving certain groups an edge is a fairly common trope, certainly in Exalted and Numenera, though it does appear in many other settings.

I'm just hesitant to blurt out an overarching worldwide plot at this early stage, the metagame is a subtle and seductive force, and I'm as liable to it as the next GM.

I liked the idea of a Clarke's Third Lawish setting. Where our "magic" is actually hacking into the code of the universe using nanobots in our blood.

Whatever works. It's an idea :-)

Exactly--Numenera was also partially behind the idea. Open to variations and complete left turns off it, of course.

Ah, but the thing to keep in mind is that I will periodically be pushing ideas to nurture and grow plots with bigger and bigger ripple effects. You can manage as you like, but I will likely never stop suggesting :-)

Re: OOC: Game Discussion
Tapping into a "deeper physics" is a neat idea, means that whether characters use magic or tech to do whatever, they're just lenses over a purer understanding of the universe. whoa.

Oh, and I will love having more ideas thrown at me, Oldtimer. I don't know how quickly I'll get around to using them all, but they're definitely appreciated.

I'd like to keep the ideas flowing in terms of settings for the moment, let the players wanted ad come due for a bump before finalizing anything, so nobody's left out of the creative loop. :D

Overwatch! 😃

my son's been playing the Retribution event all day, lol. I'm all over any setting though I'm pretty stoked about just exploring the directions Cortex can go and the variations it can reach.

I've always been interested in the Numenera setting, but the system did not do it for me, so it'd be nice to see the world through a Cortex lens.
