Prologue: Perils of the Deep Blue
It was supposed to be a simple, easy voyage to the island of Manann in the far West. A isle of myth and legend, variously claimed to be home to a god, spirit, Fair Folk noble or other fantastic individual that would bestow riches, power or immortality to those who sought him out and proved worthy. The legend itself was of little interest, but rumors that a mighty sorcerer had gone in search of the island to confront the creature that lived therein had drawn Kogane to seek it out.

Nothing in Creation is ever simple.

The Ruler of the Waves rocked as waves crashed against its hull, the ship creaking like a wailing invalid under the stresses put upon it by the sudden, unnatural storm. Sailors scurried to and fro in the slick, dangerously-wavering deck, their facial features ranging from calm focus to outright terror; only one person showed excitement, alternating between shouting orders to the sailors and defiance at the storm, intermittently breaking into half-crazed laughter as she negotiated the wheel: the captain.

Barely tall enough to look over the wheel, with a stocky frame, a mop of brightly orange hair and dimples when she smiled, Britannia did not look the part of a veteran sailor, let alone the vessel's captain. At a first, uninformed glance, she looked more like someone's good-natured niece; a misunderstanding the shrewd captain was quick to capitalize on when made by her enemies. She was, after all, a very successful courier, trader, smuggler and, when the situation called for it, pirate.

"How's this for an adventure, wolf-girl?"

She had to shout to be heard over the din of the storm, and even so her voice did not carry much farther than the few feet separating Britannia and Kogane. The sea had turned so abruptly from calm to storm that it had caught everyone by surprise, the Exalt passenger included, and Kogane had not had the time to even think about going below-decks.

"Welcome to the West!"

The captain broke out into laughter again, the storm seeming to respond to her enthusiasm.

Prologue: Perils of the Deep Blue
The crew moved about like ants on a disturbed hill. Kogane, not wanting to impose further than she already was, had elected to stand at the point of the ship that seemed least travelled; directly next to the captain, hunched down next to the wheel.

Kogane's wolfen ears, until recently covered by a hat, lay to either side from the top of her head, flattened down by rain and wind, tips dripping onto the deck. Her face was a mask of either stoic concentration or abject misery, eyes closed and mouth pitched downwards in an exaggerated smile, giving the Exalt an appearance not entirely dissimilar from an old greyhound hunched at its master's heel, stubbornly warding off the storm with its own grit and irritation. Kogane suspected (though she would sooner die than voice the thought) that she had a smell very much akin to a wet dog's, only dampened by the sea and rain ablating scent in general.

At the captain's call, one of her ears flicks upright, sending a watery crescent flicking through the air. She turns her head to look over her shoulder at the small woman, one golden eye creaking open. "T'be honest, s'about what I was expecting. Not as many sea monsters as I was promised, but I s'pose you can't win 'em all." She unbends her knees, rising up to stand next to the captain. "So, is there anything I can help with? Feel a little guilty, sitting about like an ornery lapdog. Hoist the rigging or... somesuch." Kogane lifts a hand as she speaks, flicking her fingers as if twisting a doorknob. The vague motion does not lend an enormous well of confidence to the idea that she knows what rigging even is.

Or hoisting, for that matter.

Prologue: Perils of the Deep Blue
"Don't worry," the captain waved Kogane's concern away, grinning. "My boys know their stuff. You're a passenger, and besides any friend of Rocky-chan is a friend of mine. Besides," her grin widened, "we have faced much worse than this."

As if in response to the captain's boast, thunder rumbles in the distance, and lightning strikes, momentarily blinding everyone. When the spots clear from Kogane's vision, she can see a huge shape rising from the sea, in the distance, through the curtain of water.

The captain lost her grin, also looking at the ominous shadow with her brows furrowed.

"Well, that's new."

Prologue: Perils of the Deep Blue
Kogane presses her ears down against her head to shield them from the thunder. As her vision clears, and she notices the distant, looming shape, she leans over towards Britannia. "I'd like to take back my sea monster requ..."

The wolf-girl tapers off, apparently distracted by something. One of her ears flicks, and she straightens up, ears swivelling atop her head as her whole body turns towards some sound only she seems able to hear.

The captain, standing nearest to her, would be most likely to feel it; a tension, like static, as if the rain were falling more slowly for the briefest instant.

For Kogane, that instant stretches out far longer. Her internal essence runs up her body, focusing into her ears, her focus originating at her feet and then spreading outwards, a lopsided dome spreading away from her like a ripple cast up by the stone of something half-heard and her own fey-touched instinct.

As soon as the instant ends, so too does that tension. Kogane turns to look at the captain. Her golden eyes carry a calm quite uncharacteristic of her from Britannia's interactions with the jovial wolf. Her voice is similarly precise; "There's someone in the water."

Britannia looks sharply towards Kogane at the words, her eyes narrowing.

"Someone fell over? Where?"

Prologue: Perils of the Deep Blue
"Don't think they came from the ship." Kogane raises an arm, pointing over the point side of the ship. "About a hundred yards that way." Nothing can be made out against the dark ocean waves, yet Kogane seems confident in her assertion. "They seem to be resting on something, and I think they're breathing. The rain is throwing me off a bit."

Prologue: Perils of the Deep Blue
Britannia glances back at the shape; as much as it is possible to tell through the storm and given its massive size, it doesn't seem to have moved. She looked back in the direction Kogane pointed, and seems to come to a decision; nodding to herself, she turns the wheel around, and starts shouting orders for the sailors -- who, in their haste and focus, have largely missed the looming shadow in the distance.

"This could be an elaborate trap from one of the Fair Folk, you know. I don't know why one of them noble types would bother with us, but then again I'm not sure anyone knows what one of them thinks anyway."

She sighs, glancing again at the looming shape.

"Either way, not like there's anything we can do at this point. Might as well check this drowner of yours, and help them if they're human."

She glances at Kogane's ears.

"Or, well, help them if they're not Fair Folk."

She frowns.

"Help them if they need it. Yes, let's go with that."

Prologue: Perils of the Deep Blue
Kogane nods, giving the captain a smile. She paces down to middeck, resting her hands on the railing as the ship pivots towards her heading. She follows along the edge as it turns, until she is stood at the head of the Ruler, eyes gazing across the waves. As lightning flashes, she uses its momentary illumination to try and mark irregularities on the ocean's surface, seeking visual confirmation of what she heard.
