[1.06] The Catacombs of Wrath

Faeli crept through the catacombs as well. She stood for a moment in front of the statue twisting her face into a crosseyed mockery of the angry twisted face of the lady with the book. With some of her nervous energy expended she proceeds down the corridor following the others as silently as she is able.

Talla agrees on what path to take (C), but before that she says Tsuto. "Is this your girlfriend?" the fighter takes her sword with both hands and with a swift movement beheads the statute.
She smiles at the man again. "Now we can move."

OOC: what do I need to roll to break the statute? :)

[1.06] The Catacombs of Wrath

A stone statue has a Hardness of 7 (I.e. DR 7) and then beyond that 28 HP with a BT of 14. In theory you would need to do about 21 pts of damage in a single strike to cut the head off but it's a cool moment. Grab a hero point while you're at it.

Talitha's sword hits right on the mark and a crack splits the head from the rest of it. The stone tumbles down before the face shatters on the floor with a loud crack that echoes down the hallway. Overall the head is still mostly intact but even if remounted the face would never be the same.

That being said, the statue did not look anything like the winged woman from his journals.

Walking down the corridor the tunnel widens here into what appears to have once been a small shrine, for to the northeast, steps lead up to a platform of gray stone. Sitting atop the platform is an ancient altar, little more than a jagged block of black marble with a shallow concavity on top of it. This basin is filled with what appears to be filthy water. There is a closed set of double doors to the southeast.

Razyll mutters a prayer and invokes the power of  the Detect Magic cantrip as the group moves along the hall.

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)

Detect Magic (Cantrip)
Traditions: Arcane, Divine, Occult, Primal
Cast: Two Actions somatic, verbal
Area: 30-foot emanation
You send out a pulse that registers the presence of magic. You receive no information beyond the presence or absence of magic. You can choose to ignore magic you're fully aware of, such as the magic items and ongoing spells of you and your allies.

You detect illusion magic only if that magic's effect has a lower level than the level of your detect magic spell. However, items that have an illusion aura but aren't deceptive in appearance (such as an invisibility potion) typically are detected normally.

Razyll narrowed his eyes.

"Not to be concerned but I do sense magic in the area." Razyll said as he looked around. He looked at the small shrine, it could be that but he definitely didn't want to experiment with what foul magic might be contained within a place such as this.

Or maybe the basin of filthy water...

Mysteries of another time Razyll thought to himself as he focused his attention on the closed set of double doors.

Tristen stopped inside the room. As Razyll moved to examine the double doors, he stopped next to Faeli. "Um Faeli did you say that you could mend my shield?" Tristen's eyes moved back and forth from the shrine to the double doors.

Talitha stays vigilant while Razyll checks the altar. "Find whatever you are looking for quick. I'll check the door in case anyone wants to pay us a visit here."
She is looking at both the closed doors and the way they came in.

Following his friends into the small room, Kakddock starts to check for any tracks he saw earlier.

"Hold Friends, I see similar tracks.  I would like to investigate further before we walk over the tracks."

He again motions for his companions to stay where they are while he investigates.  You see him walk from the door up to the altar, and stop for a moment. He looks from the door they entered through, to the altar and then from the altar to the room to the southeast.  He walks towards that southeast room and looks around the room again.

He stands straighter and addresses the group.

"It appears that the tracks from the previous area are also in this room.  Goblin, monster and humanoid.  However, none of these tracks go directly to the southeast room.  They all go from the way we entered, to the altar and then to the southeast room.  That makes me think that there may be something of importance with this altar."

Kaddock starts to walk over to the altar as his companions take in what he has found.

Kaddock approaches the alter but other than the bubbling foul liquid there doesn't appear to be anything notable about it. At least no signs of hidden switches or buttons or anything.

In reply to Tristen d'Cordain (msg # 27):

"Oh! yeah! I have that spell.' Faeli grabs plops down her backpack and pulls out her spellbook. She flips through a few pages.

"No, no...nope." Faeli smirks and then points at a section on a page. "Right here! Here it is!" She looks down and considers.

"I mean, I do not have the details worked out at the moment...but, I can burn your shield for you, would that help? Like they do in a forge could you fix it then?"

"I can trade shields with one of you, my shield hasn't seen much use yet so perhaps it could serve one of you well. The only question is, which one?"

Razyll looked back and forth between the shields to attempt to see which was more damaged and closer to being destroyed.

Razyll looked over the damage of Tristen's shield.

"I'd prefer if the damage was to the monsters than to your own bodies. However that key goal is accomplished."

Razyll nodded to Talitha and fell in line behind the fighter, ready for her to open the door.

As he observes the bubbling foul liquid, something triggers in the back of his mind.  He takes his backpack off his shoulders, and sets it on the ground.  He then takes out a torch and flint and steel.  He settles his pack back on his back, stuffs the flint and steel into his belt pouch, grabs his bow in his main hand the the torch in his off hand.

He dunks the flamable part of the torch into the liquid for a few seconds and takes it out and looks at the liquid.

OOC: Kaddock is looking to see if any kind of reaction happens.  He's also thinking of lighting it with another existing torch, but hasn't done that yet.

Kaddock puts his torch into the foul liquid. It bubbles and hisses violent and his torch is extinguished just as if it had been put in water but the smell is horrendous, like burning flesh and sulfur.

Opening the door reveals a huge room that looks like nothing more than an immense underground cathedral. Stone doors stand to either side of the main entrance, but beyond this, the walls are carved with strange, spiky runes. In the center of the room is a large pool, with a ring of polished human skulls balanced on stone spikes arranged in a circle around the deeper midsection. At the far end of the room, a pair of stone stairways leads up to a pulpit on which sits a second pool, this one triangular and filled with churning, bubbling water that looks almost like translucent lava. Yet while wisps of what look like heat and steam rise from the strange orange liquid, the room itself is deathly cold.

Kaddock peeks through his companions into the room without stepping in.  He stows his extinguished torch on his belt and readies his bow.

This room looks like something an evil god or worshipper would build, he thinks trying to recall if he's heard of anything like this before.

OOC: rolling Occultism to see if he remembers or has heard of a place like this before.

15:04, Today: Kaddock Ingir rolled 7 using 1d20+5 with rolls of 2.  Occultism check.

... probably not :) LOL

"Let's have a quick look and if noone is here we can choose the doors again and never come back."
The fighter will go around the room looking for other exits.
