The way I see the campaign PCs will start as a band of independent fighters, will have an opportunity to join an independent settlement, and later will have to decide whether to join one of the factions or try to remain independent.

Location, background and factions involved depend on the time period but it seem War between barons is the favourite

Rather than reduce the wealth of any one archetype over another would it not be better to just redefine what wealth means?

Rich folks in the badlands have a home that does not leak in the rain, and some ready supply of food.  Nobody has cars, gold, internet, or any of the typical wealth things.

That's more or less what I had in mind.

Basically PCs at the most can afford to buy a weekly supply of food for few people or pay for 1 night in a fancy doll house, afford to repair their weapons or by some generic cheap ones.

They don't own businesses or land or vehicles.  They can't support a warband.

PCs are vagabonds, ronin...

Does this work for you?

I can go either way.  But if you want to start taking stuff away from what look like fairly carefully balanced archetypes you probably want to give them something back.  Even if it is just a +1 to a skill for each wealth level lost.

Morgan is right though, just scale wealth to the setting. Highway Ronin, Thief and Driver come with cars. Bandlands cars, but cars. Wealth can be measured in favors owed to the character, stashes of supplies - stuff that makes sense in the Badlands. Contacts are tied to skills, but Wealth could allow Contacts outside of the archetype's skills. A Sword Master who knows a doctor, boatsman or whatever.

I don't think anyone starts with real estate. Attuning to Feng Shui sites is how they acquire experience and bases. Reskinning it as strategic buildings, objective points and favorable terrain seems an easy way to map it to the Badlands setting.

A badlands car is called a horse.  What they use trucks and cars for is a better analog to a tank.

My bad Red, fixed now.

As for the rest... I don't want to give you wrong idea.

I can give you a doctor contact or favor owned by an innkeeper... but you won't get a chance to use either in the adventure I have mapped where finding such contacts and getting such favors is likely to be the very focus, giving it to you from the start is just bypassing the actual fun.

I do not believe I can allow cars.  The car Sunny and Bajie drive they took from Abbots, trucks belong to barons, bikes... you see my point.  If at some point of the adventure you feel bold enough to say claim a Truck from Chau's convoy - I have no problem with it.

Honestly I do not recall a horse in a possession of anyone but the Barons' men in the show.  And as Marryanne says to Lydia - "when I think of the horses, I think of them pulling the plow".  Horses are useful tools in the Badlands, more of a Tractor or Combine Harvester than "cars".  Even barons do not field cavalry units.

I can give you one horse to share between all the PCs to start with. :D

Whether it will unbalance the archetypes remains to be seen, frankly so far I don't see any PC for whom Wealth Level is a major feature and while I am gimping it I am doing so equally for all PCs so I do not foresee a problem.

Good afternoon people. Despite my name there is no evidence linking me to my father the infamous Fu Manchu. Who doesn't exist of course: he's just a myth.

I'm looking forwards to playing with you all!

Please note there is more then one game map.  2 for now and I expect I will need a map of the village as well.  So don't forget to "select another map to view".  And as I am sure you've already guessed red dot on the second map is the village of Donbrook.

Now I've read the game (I thought it was a Feng Shui game but it's based on a TV series) I obviously aren't linked to Fu Manchu. Wrong genre: sorry

I've seen the first series some time ago, but in the country I'm in I can't see it again, and can't see any later series. So I'm going to be a little slow with catching up with world details

I think there are fragments and summaries on youtube that might help you.

The Brief is this is USA about 500 years in the future, there were wars that wiped out civilization as we know it.  Guns don't exist and instead people dedicated themselves to martial arts.  The area in the former South USA is now Badlands controlled by neo-feudalism complete with Barons.  Barons are now at War.  Think Sengoku or War of Three Kingdoms but in post-apocalyptic America and without much of the eastern mysticism (replaced instead by Gift which gives super human abilities and cult of Azra - a mythical ancient city)

So I'm having a huge issue settling on an archetype.  Do you fellows have a redeemed pirate yet?

Morgan is neither a pirate, nor redeemed, don't worry about me even if you did somehow double up on my archetype it wouldn't be a problem.

Ok, I've narrowed it down to 4 archetypes.  My character was inspired by Jet from Avatar the Last Airbender series.  I have been wanting to play a Sword Master for a while, and this seems like the best setting to do so.  That's how I'm leaning.

I have to admit to being confused. This is a normal state for me I am sad to say

So I don't know the answers to the following questions. In all the following Feng Shui allows it if we select the appropriate options, so here I am asking if the game world allows it:
  • Can we learn to leap and bound? This is a biggie...
  • Can we regenerate
  • Can we have our hair under our mental control like an extra limb (because that's just cool! and seriously Wuxia)
  • Can we have cyberware. Wings, Robot Arms, big guns that are part of our bodies.
  • Can we have invisibility (metamaterials/rubenium polymner/chameleon suits)
  • Can we have nanotech stuff that changes what we look like?
  • Can we have guns powered by our life energy or nanites instead of bullets

Next.. I don't get the problem with Gifted. If we can leap and bound then aren't we gifted? If we can't leap and bound then as players let's just say 'hell no... we want to be able to leap and bound'. Because that's the essence of a world like Badlands. If we all (or mostly) have some nanotech then aren't we all gifted a little?

No idea what leap and bound is, and a text search of the book came up with nothing.

Some degree of enhanced healing seems to be possible but not what I would call regeneration.

The tech stuff is bound to the setting, not the system mechanics.  Chances are you can have a ranged that does not use bullets or run out of ammo but it isn't a gun, or use nanites.  Try a spike on a long silk rope that you throw around but it never runs out.

The things you can do are probably ok, but how you do them needs to fit the setting.

The Gifted are a crazy rare story element not really appropriate for a starting story.

Leaping and bounding means that we can leap and bound better than the normal person. I didn't realise it was idiomatically local until I looked up a definition to link to

i.e. we can jump 20'. Or similar. It's the defining feature of Wuxia ('flying people')
