OOC: World-Building Articles

Here's what I have so far for Baylee's system of origin. We can collab it into something for our setting. In response to a question from Control, the system was split by the two empires via proxy. One power backed the Inner Colonies with weapons and trade while the other did the same for the Scylla Colonies. I've put no thought into these ancient empires nor what replaced them after they broke apart. In this system, without the cold war style stalemate, the two powers fell to open war.

Please, consider this community property for this game, not mine. Suggest and add away where I have not put any details. Debate me one where I did. World building is best done didactically.

Sun   [I]   {p1}   {P2}  |\|XGAB|\|   [L]   |\|{S}|\|SAB|\|[M]|\|

[x] Uninhabitable planet colonized for mining.
{x} Inhabited planet, whether natural or terraformed.
|\| Asteroid Belts

The system is called Deux "dee-uhks" Prime and it lies on the outer edges of the neutral zone that existed between the "two major powers" that splintered into disparate petty kingdoms and empires. The system was split between the two empires for a long time with the Inner Colonies representing one and the Scylla Colonies representing the other. For the tenure of the two galactic empires, the two political entities of the system fought over control of the gas giant Legeant to mine it for gases and its moons and rings for ores but existed mostly in a stalemate thanks to the presence of the cold war between the superpowers. After their fall, war broke out. The only other "political entity" worth not in the system is the neutral region of the Xingxing Guojia Asteroid Belt (ihks-gaab" to locals) which is occupied by pirates, mercenary companies, and the Pai Huai clans.

The two major cultures I have envisioned are the Inner Colonies and the Scylla Colonies. each is centered on a single planet, but encompasses dozens of colonies throughout the system. Many citizens of these political powers are born, grow up, and die on these colonies.

Paix is a mishmash of French and Chinese cultures, for reference. The language would be a French-Chinese creole. French grammar with many, many Chinese loan words. Mandarin Chinese by the way. Not because it makes more sense, i am actually borrowing a lot more from southern Chinese kingdoms, but because I know a bit of Mandarin. The people tend to be short, thin, with jaundiced skin tones and mixed features. Green eyes are very common and valued. Yes, it actually looks sickly to the rest of humanity. The major religion of Paix is The Celestial Bureaucracy which is a Confucian/Buddhist/Shinto hybrid. There are thousands of gods; each tiny aspect of culture in Paix has a god just for that and nothing else. The religion emphasizes occupying and excelling in your designated place. Nepotism and rigid social castes are the norms here. The merit of your subordinates reflects well upon you, the superior. Each planet and colony has a governor and the council of governors rule in a nominal oligarchy. Political infighting is constant and vicious.

Scylla is loosely based on the Austronesian peoples: Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia in particular but with Pacific islander influence as well. The language is loosely based in Filipino because, again, that is what I know. Rigid individualism is the norm here. But that also means no one questions when tyrants take power and wield it ruthlessly. That is the price of freedom. If you don't like it, overthrow it or leave. Thus, movement between colonies is common in these colonies unlike the Inner Colonies. The religion here is monotheistic and roughly Catholic. Society tends to structure around family units rather than larger communal structures. A unit you can pick up and move if needed. People tend to be short, darker complected, with Asiatic features.

The Pai Huai are an abhuman race. Cuklturally and genetically isolated for centuries in space, they have drifted drastically in appearance and culture from the Protegerans they may be related to. "Mixing" between humans and Pai Huai happens frequently; it rarely results in viable offspring. PH are tall, thin, and have elongated limbs and features from living in low G environs. They tend to be extremely uncomfortable on planets due to this and will develop severe health issues if they stay too long. They speak a language based on Mandarin and can be recognized as distantly related to Paixois. They live in clans where the women collectively own the clan's ship(s) while men own the tools of their trade. The two aspects of their culture work in harmony to lead the clans who live in retrofitted/Gypsy-style cargo ships that are vibrantly colored and easily identified and PH "Caravans."

Sun - large, yellow, benign

I - Infern is a small, rocky planet with a sulfurous atmosphere. Paixois mining operations based in orbital colonies exist to mine the planet for gases, mine the sun for plasma, and generate power from the sun. Mostly unmanned.

P1 - Paix "Pah-iks" lies in the goldilocks zone of Deux Prime. A large owrld with a single continent, the surface is given over to large agrarian works. A band of cities exist at the equator for laborers and common folk to inhabit. Little more than slums. Most people migrate to work each day on the vast, communal farms and ranches via light rail systems. Anyone with wealth migrates off planet to the moon which is one vast city. Still plenty of slums here for those who serve the wealthy. It is hotly debated among Paixois "Paks-wah" which group of second class citizens are worse off.

P2 - Proteger "Pro-teh-ger" lies further out in the GZ and is slightly cooler for it. It had several continents and island chains that are typically densely forested. It is controlled by the Paixois government but was once independent centuries ago. There are many artifacts of an ancient culture here, but the Paixois use the planet for lumber industries and specialty textiles. There are two moons and the government exists on the second within bubble cities from which the governor and his allies "rule" the world. Based openly on favoritism and nepotism, politics in the Inner Colonies is complex and ever shifting. The work populace of Proteger takes two forms. Criminals who live in prison complexes at the poles who work in the lumber industries and craftsmen who live in communities near the equator working on small farms to produce luxury goods and textiles. The first moon is rocky and barren but also holds ancient artifacts. The local Protegerans tend to live in isolated communities and are growing rarer under Paixois pogroms.

XGAB - Xingxing Guojia Asteroid Belt "ihks-gab" is not an entity as much a collective of the free. The Pai Huai claim they once lived on Proteger but it was so long ago and the Paixois have edited history such that no one is sure whether to believe that or not. Now, they live in mobile clans in space. Each clan's women own the clan's ship; the men each own the tools of their trade. Each clan is basically an extended family. The eldest woman and man work together to steer the family. They are often a couple but not always. Mostly they mine the asteroids and salvage wrecked ships then sell or trade with whomever wants to. The asteroid belt is densely populated with various things (asteroids, space hulks, wrecks, satellites, etc.). No asteroid is large enough or stable enough to be even considered a dwarf planet. THough it is their home and t=no one knows it better than the Pai Huai, they do share it with mercenary bands and some hardy independent miner types.

L - Legeant is an enormous gas giant. It has several dozen moons and several rings of ice and rocks. Though it is uninhabitable, several of the moons host mining colonies and the planet's gases themselves are harvested via orbital operations. It is the source of Deux Prime's worth outside the system as several rare elements are found in its atmosphere. For a long time, the planet was shared by the Inner Colonies and Scylla Colonies. Now, the Inner Colonies hold just a few mining stations and have no access to the orbital gas harvesting plants. It is a common target for pirates and the governors of each mine often hire mercenaries to supplement governmental troops. The two powers still fight over it though the actual war is over.

SAB - The Scylla Asteroid Belt is named after the habitable dwarf planet orbiting within it. Made of mostly ice, the asteroids here are not worth much. It is loosely populated with such asteroids though and navigating them is relatively easy.

S - Scylla is a dwarf planet (1/3 the size of Paix) that was terraformed to be habitable. The people live in underground colonies and depend on planetary scaled machines for life. These machines depends on gases and fuel mined from Scylla's sister planet. A few agricultural caves exist and Scyllan alcohols are famous, but most of the wealth of the Sylla Colonies comes from off-world. Scyllans are a rough, taciturn people. The government is quite strict, but people understand it is necessary to live this far from the sun.

M - Malamig is Scylla's sister planet. A big sister, Malamig is twice the size of Scylla but not terraformed. Instead, working here requires special suits for warmth, pressure, and oxygen. The planet is mined extensively. Miners work for a share of profits and are strong, fierce, and independent. Yet, the mine bosses are totalitarian dicks. An equilibrium exists between the two. Most Scyllans work the mines here or on Legeant for the majority of their adult life and only return to Scylla after injury or retirement.

That's the gist of it. Have at it.

Re: OOC: World-Building Articles

So I know you were soliciting comments on this writeup, and I have many, but I'll just drop three here.

How can the people of Scylla be rugged individualists if they live on a terraformed world in underground cities? Doesn't a relatively harsh environment like that demand an authoritarian government just to keep the lights on and the air inside and under pressure? And where would these individualists flee to if they disagree with their neighbors? Are there other tunnels with light and air and food that are standing empty? I'm sure it's clear in your mind, but just needs a bit more explanation.

My first thought reading about the Pai Huai was, "Since this has some Chinese influence, I think this group must be the analogs for the Shantou people (or Swatow as some spell it), where because they have ships, they are going to be the smugglers, the money launderers, and have links to all the organized crime groups on the various planets. Not sure how that would work out with them being low-gravity people, though, so that may not have been what you were going for at all, but that is how I read it.

My overall impression is that Paix planets are horrible. The bad guys there won, and from your description have eradicated any elements in society that might change the status quo. Even if not territorially aggressive, as written I see them as an evil empire continuously engaged in kleptocracy and protecting the regime. Where are the groups that might challenge them? Is there any middle class? Didn't sound like it. Any independent media? I am betting not. Educational institutions? Where will the Revolution come from? (If it comes at all.) And what is there around this polity for our newly escaped group to do?

Well, you asked for pushback, and I hope this was the right kind and amount. I think part of the reason you didn't get more comments (other than people being busy with character and starship creation) is that you already have a comprehensive vision for what this star system is. It obviously exists fully formed in your mind already. And that's a great thing, and I love it!

Re: OOC: World-Building Articles

Oh, yay! Feedback is so good! I get that a lot when i world Build, that it seems all fully formed in my head. That has lead a lot of people to hesitating to input as they don't want to disturb things. In truth, the way I build tends to just look that way but it's far from the truth. I start in broad strokes: an outline. Then as I explore the ideas in the broad strokes, the small things fill themselves in naturally. occasionally, you have to go back to the broad strokes and alter to make things work, but that's the fun.

So, the broad strokes here were three sources of political power, I wanted none of them to be good or bad, and I wanted to keep in mind that I am operating at a solar system scale not -planetary. However, that present the issue of not over-simplifying things too much. There's so much more room for movement and forces and resources in a system.

So your comment that the Paix seem like evil overlords makes me want to say, "that seems like liberal western bias." I based the government system there on Confucianism. Check out the religion I gave them. Hundreds and thousands of years being told that everyone is born into the system where they were meant to be. Well, it leads to the kind of control the CPP has in China, eh? Still, you're right, there'd be dissent. I just didn't locate it yet. Maybe Triad like syndicates operate on Paix. What you call kleptocracy wouldn't seem that way to Paix; it's their due in the Celestial Bureaucracy. But some would disagree. Also, such nepotism and kleptocracy leads to smaller scale kleptocrats running their own fiefdoms different ways. Perhaps the prison system of Proteger has some interesting factions? Of course, there would also be external pressures from free-wheeling folks in the XGAB and the individualistic Scyllans. As for independent media... oh, probably. Based in the XGAb and broadcasting into Paix space? Access to intergalactic media? There's a good chance that the Paix government tries to regulate that a la the CPP again, but seems even less likely to work at this scale.

Ther Pai Huai are a gypsie, belter analog. I am not familiar with the reference that you made. They tend to have ships and operate outside Paix and Scyllan society/cultural norms as well as their space. Thus, they fill the vaccuum of smugglers and go-betweens rather naturally. But your right, they avoid planet-side activity due to their zero-g genetics. The chance that there is a Pai Huai "mafia" is probably pretty good, or more like the pirate Lords in the Caribbean movies? Haha. Interesting ideas.

The Scyllans don't exist on one planet. But yeah, there might be some tunnels that exist empty. The terraforming of Scylla was not done by humans. Not sure I made that clear. Or, if it was done by humans, it was done before the Scyllans took over. Spitballing a lot of that. But, the basis for Scyllans was libertarian/Free Market ideas. The drawback to libertarian ideas is that it opens things up to dictators rather easily. It also tends to see those dictators overthrown only to be replaced by new ones. I am thinking of the ancient Greek city states here. If every one is free to do as they want, some will seek to take control and succeed. Others will resist. It's a melange. So Scylla probably exists as a confederation of a constantly shifting patchwork of various types of leaders. Viewed as a market, that means the strong or effective will rise to the top over time. But the individualism streak means nothing stays at the top for long. But, to your comment, they control half the system with a dozen plus colonies and two dwarf planets. There is a lot of room to move if you are not being controlled by authoritarian dictators. That assumes families maintain the ability to move. If not, I guess conflict arises, doesn't it?

That's my process. Start with a base, think through objections, then keeping in mind the cultural and societal and historical color in place think how that people would respond. Not how my kind of people, but the kind of people I am trying to imagine. Tricky, eh?

Feel free to add anything you want where I haven't added things. Gm can too, of course, as I cede all this to their world. Others can jump in if they wish. Again, trying to avoid good/evil, but think along the lines of the cultures I am imagining from within them. One a confucian style autocracy/theocracy and the other a melange of liberatian/free-market anarchists. Both have their merits and demerits. Then the rather stereotypical free people caught in between which, I suppose, speaks to my own biases.

Re: OOC: World-Building Articles

SO, this thread was originally introduced to discuss an initial offering by Baylee's character.  But really, it's open to discuss all sorts of stuff.

Please note, that I stand by the rule that nothing is canon until it appears in the narrative (so, in the in-character threads)..

TECHNOLOGY

"Autonomous Entities" (AE)
a generic term because no assumption is made about biological/technological, nor sentience or sapience.  This could apply to anything that's normally capable of mobility under it's own power.  So, a human, an android, a cat, a drone.

Cortical Stack
the tech used to upload/download your personality.

It maps your brain, molecule by molecule, synapse by synapse.   It doesn't store your memories, as I understand it.  But it captures an exact state of your brain at the time of backup.

The peripheral component of a system that allows for the backup, upload and download of a person's non-physical characteristics--ego, memory, etc. About the size of a two silver-dollars, it was implanted and recorded your ego, backed it up to the stasis system.
When you were "quick-loaded" It was a progressive writing, sort of like how a jpeg image can be written from start to end or progressively written from multiple concurrent starting points.

Breakthroughs in this field are reputed to allow for downloading your personality to a different body, to a different species (ie, moving a meat-mind to a robot-body) and "far-casting", sending a stream of data across thousands of light-years rather than travelling physically yourself.  You'd be farcast into a temporary body, do your business and that data would be farcast back to be integrated with your primary personality.

Every stack configuration is unique. It is possible, Amin supposes, that copies could have been sent off-station. But we'd had to have been very very special cases.

In this setting, the technology is in it's infancy as the biological to technology bridging is unstable.  current-day fiction of the setting would have all sorts of stories about "ego-editing" and "brain-hacking".  But this level of technology is not in common (nor uncommon) use.

Cryogenic sleep a proprietary process developed for Zenda-Meier.
"When you undergo the the process of cryogenic storage, the cortical stacks are implanted at a key point in your central nervous system."  When you are brought out of cryo-sleep, the cortical stack remaps the brain to that state.

Without the backup, you'd all be raving lunatics by now.   Initial studies showed that ten standard cycles without the backup was enough to drive people irretrievably mad.  Some of you had been under for nearly 2000 rots (5.5 cycles)

If there's a Z-M branch office on K-Zino, we should be able to find out if our stack imprints were backed-up off-station.

Galactic Notation
sort of like a GPS, but on a galactic scale

Gravity Drugs ("Gs+, Gs-")
Drug-therapies for heavier-G folks to stave off (or at least delay) Zero-G degradation. Similar drugs exist for Low-G folks to adapt to higher-G environments.

He3 - Helium-3
usually harvested from gas-giants, when fused with Dueterium, it is a key component for clean reaction drives and a key catalyst used in the massive jump-gates to create jump-points between the stars.

Holographic display chips. Also Data-storage. Interface can be command-relays. start blank at the factory.

Skill-sets
Both robots and cyborgs (with the appropriate configurations) have some sort of modular infrastructure that might allow the "swapping-out" of skill-sets and knowledge-sets.  Functionally, this might be modeled as as pre-configured skill profile and maybe one or two specialized stunts.  There would need to be some limitations--like the time necessary to reboot, so that swapping out isn't something done too lightly or too often...

Seed
the rice-grain sized implant that identifies you.

Sgalas (Standard Galactic Speech -> S.Gala.Speech -> Sgalas)
the lingua franca of this universe

Stellar Beacons (Galactic Internet Information thingies)
Aren't politically-controlled, so don't relay information.

When popping into system, the beacons don't relay that fact. The ships handshake with them, using a universal handshake protocol (or possibly a private proprietary protocol which is part of the price of connecting to the galactic net...)

One could change transponder signatures and there's a chance nobody would notice. But it's not a guarantee.

Information updates provided : Best bet to avoid stellar issues like, radiation zones or debris fields left over from recent battles or strange time-slipping stations. There might be protocols in place to identify ships in distress...  The updates are transmitted and received to all vessels that enter the system, regardless of political ideology or affiliation.

The Stellar Beacons may act as a communications relay as well, but that's a more active role. There is a security protocol in place against misinformation and hacking via handshake... like, suddenly getting your vessel blacklisted from using stellar beacons again.

The identification of ships and station involved in the blockade could be a product of the Orishi's databanks, ship-configuration identification and other factors.

The asteroid of K-Zino

-Situated in the XGAB (Xingxing Guojia Asteroid Belt "ihks-gab")
-Most asteroids are shared by Pai Huai, mercenary bands, and some hardy independent miner types.
--The Pai Huai live in mobile clans in space, mine the asteroids and salvage wrecked ships then sell or trade
---Rumors are there is a Pai Huai "mafia", or more like an association of Crime Lords

asterography
- a colony of a little under 1500 people, [or +/- 2000 people. Depends on the drunk-ness of the GM - the Grand deMograph ;)]
- almost entirely underground
- structures are functional but in good condition.  Simple fare with a focus on sturdiness and reinforced superstructures.  There hasn't been a major asteroid collision in decades, but anything that could shake the buildings this far under the surface had to be prepared for.
- five enormous hollowed-out areas,
-- two serve as harvest areas, sub-sected into various levels of hydroponics.
-- three bubbles assigned for business/commercial, habitat, and operations.
--- part of "operations" is a ship workshop, rented by the hour, expensive. Ships go by for maintenance, one after the other - it's always busy.
--- the hostel is always busy, always noisy.
--- 2 bars : Lita's (quiet, locals); Lightning's (rowdy, filled with Scyllan, Paixois, Paihuai, out-systemers).

security
- provided by the KZ Authority.
- pretty laid-back approach.
- The ship's identity is logged and noted by the watch-command of the KZA
- The ship is sent on autodrive into "motionless orbit" (with the asteroid as reference frame).
- ship-to-roid transport is done via temporary mooring or shuttle
- a small series of questions about the reasons for entry, duration of the stay and budget
- Visitors are photographed and logged to their incoming vessel.
- at no point does anyone request to scan our seed (the implanted identity chip from Zenda-Meier).
- visitors are directed to a hostel

criminality

A Den For Never-Do-Wells
-getting the Seed removed could be done pretty easily here.
-ghosts : walk the caverns. dead rebels who sacrificied "more than their lives"
ghost-hunters : consider the ghost did not sacrifice enough

economy
-because everything is produced or mined or traded, there is No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.
- Basic living expenses for atmosphere, food, water, and personal waste & recycling are billed every seven days or upon departure, and tracked via an issued or implanted credit chip.
- an intranet, where everything is posted: gigs, jobs, items for-sale, services for purchase or rent, adverts.
- a casino
People Can Multiply Their Wealth Or Lose It All.

history
- Back then was a rebel holdout against the Scylla. It took a lot of blood to achieve neutral ground. Ensuing peace brokered K-Zino it's neutral status. Many people died to make it happen.
- Lita ("not a person"?) rallied the belters, held out against vast numbers. Died twenty cycles ago. Her hostel was the first habitable structure. Used to run Māo duì lóng tournaments back in the day.

Scylla: Ever-Changing Quilt of Warlords

Exogenesis Station (IA info)
founded by Mervyn-Dahl to research personality mapping away from population centers to allow the use of L4 Sapient-AIs.  Exogenesis researcher, Doctor Gil Raith was the first being of Deux recorded to have had his personality mapped and uploaded to exostorage.

Mervyn-Dahl divested itself of Exogenesis as part of a corporate restructuring and ownership transferred to Nanodynamics.  Nanodynamics came into conflict with Exogenesis staff when it was discovered that several Artificial Intelligence entities on Exogenesis had developed higher levels of sapience than permitted by Paxois and Scylla law and that Exogenesis staff had illegally copied their personalities to said sapient-AIs.

After a short but brutal armed conflict, Exogenesis declared itself a sovereign state and currently exists outside of Nanodynamics control.  This appears to be the reason for the blockade.
There are a couple of agricultural sites within the blockade, but Exogenesis is pretty much dead-center of the blockade area.
It probably wouldn't be too off the mark to assume that the agricultural colonies have some sort of relationship with Exogenesis, itself.

Exogenesis' presence in Ihks-gab probably also means that there is a stronger Paihuai presence, there too.  But opinions and allegiances aren't clear.

Exogenesis is governed by Zhang Kai Shou, a L5-Sapient AI.  While Exogenesis claims that no other L5s exist, they have refused an audit to verify this claim.

The fact that it is governed by an artificial intelligence says nothing about what kind of shell the AI is housed in--or even if it's using a mobile shell.  Remote scans indicate that three of the five laboratory areas on Exogenesis Station do not currently have atmosphere.  Exogenesis station remains a leading research laboratory involved in the study of  intelligence augmentation, Mind-mapping and bio/mechanical interfaces.  The profit-stream from Mindmapped entertainment patents guarantees that it can remain a force in play for some time.

a stopping point actually. Once sufficient number of cold-sleep prisoners had accumulated, they'd batch them off to Viziers Penal Colony.  No point sending only two or three people when you can send a full-batch of twenty or forty--and bill the originating government for the time-in-transit. Meta-game wise, it allows things to have changed and people to react to your reappearance.

Station commander was Captain Avaren Royce. Amin was the equivalent of a watch commander

Amin assumes that the attack that led to it's destruction was a result of someone trying to effect the release of some prisoner or another. The Ptolomen had limited defensive capabilities and the attackers, apparently, overwhelmed them. The attackers were well-armed and knew where to focus their fire. Certainly there was nothing else on the station worth it's willful destruction. Perhaps someone was trying to free one of the escapees group. But there were over six hundred prisoners in cryo-sleep.
Presumably, most of the sixty-one personnel survived.

Zenda-Meier will send a crisis response team to try to locate and secure the station's data cores. That will be able to tell them what happened and perhaps even why the Ptolomen was attacked. ... In the wake of the destruction of the station, the prisonners will be considered lost.

If we should return to our old lives, Zenda-Meier might be seen as being liable for failure to uphold their end of your incarceration contract. That will draw attention from our local system authorities and Zenda-Meier itself.

Vizier Colony
Corporate-owned colony where the convicted were headed--once Ptolomen got the requisite number of transferees to ship there in a full cargo.
Viziers is where you go to be forgotten "but not killed"--so they can honestly say "we didn't execute her.  She died of natural causes".
Some of us were to serve a predefined term on Vizier.  Some of you were probably going to die there.

Sargathan Amin'ship. She should be out of drydock in less than a twenty rots.

Zenda-Meier
ZM has, as one of it's multiple ventures, prisoner internment. Private prisons. The penal colony is a small one at that. But it has been a profitable business that has allowed it to create positive relations with new species, new peoples (!)
  • ZM didn't arrest, try, or convict us. They simply stored our physicality for transfer to Vizier
  • implanted identity chips ("Seed") on the inmates
  • Contrary to popular conviction, Zenda-Meier is not in the business of torture. We weren't to be executed unless we became an immediate threat to Zenda-Meier staff or assets. As sleepers, we were never a threat - just cargo.
  • They won't be incarcerating their own people on their own prison venture.
  • The penal control market has allowed Zenda-Meier to gain penetration to markets traditionally closed / unexpected. To the point where they've developed a rapid-contact division for new acquisitions.
  • If they don't have a branch office, then opening negotiations to establish a branch (New Ventures Protocol) would allow for (money) for any officer in good standing to facilitate the establishment of relations with new species, new systems

Māo duì lóng "Cats versus Dragons". combat collectible card game based on Mrrshan Dragara. Teaches critical thinking.  Some variation comes and goes every generation or so.
Needs a console, and three-dimensional creatures fighting. Are the creatures stored in chips?
If you won, you could integrate something from your opponent's creature. So, they evolve. From cats to dragons?
