Arrival at Cerrus
After an uncomfortable yet uneventful flight to the surface, you feel the ship start to decelerate and touch down with a horrifying screech of metal. The door slowly opens, and you see several armed men encircling the ship, although they aren't pointing their weapons... yet. A grey haired man in the center - presumably the leader - steps forward and raises his palm in greeting. "Ho there! I apologize for the inconvenience, but I can't say that we were expecting you."

Domonia immediately unbuckled and walks forward ahead of everyone making her sure her military outfit and hat with the inquisition symbol are in perfect view. "My name is Domonia Sadistivus of the inquisition. It is my understanding that there is a matter of interest for us on this planet. I assume you are part of the planetary government. What is your rank and title?"

Alyss unbuckles and follows Domonia out. "No one expects the Inquisition. Greetings. I am Alyss Vance and like my associate has already said, we're Inquisitorial representatives. We have business on your planet and would appreciate it if we had your full cooperation so we may conclude matters as quickly as possible." She steps up next to Domonia and offers her hand to the man to shake.

Arrival at Cerrus
Quintus barks an order to a pair of men, who salute and scurry off. Several minutes later, a small personnel carrier rolls up and Quintus beckons you inside. After some concerns that Uroch may or may not fit through the door, everyone manages to squeeze inside, with little room to spare. Nivellius mutters something about the state of the accommodations, although Quintus appeared to not hear him.

From one windowless transport to another, you've been unable so far to get a good look at the cityscape.

After roughly 15 minutes, you hear the squeal of the transport's brakes. The doors swing open, and you disembark at a massive set of stairs leading to the gubernatorial palace. While you have seen larger and more impressive buildings, the palace strikes an elegant figure, more an art piece than a fortification. Crafted from massive blocks of white stone, it contrasts the typical Imperial grey rockcrete style, though the massive Aquila banners hung from every spire reaffirm that this is indeed an Imperial building. There are several guards at the top of the stairs, blocking the entrance.

Quintus looks at the visible parts of the small armory that you have with you. "Ordinarily I would insist that anyone meeting with Lord Heimgarten disarm, but since I doubt I have the authority to make you do that, I'll settle for a polite request that you keep your weapons holstered while within the palace grounds."

Uroch, unsurprisingly, makes no indication that he heard or understood.

"Is he always like that?" Quintus asks with a raised eyebrow.

Nivellius sighs theatrically. "I have yet to hear him speak a word of Gothic, although I haven't heard him attempt any sort of speech. Probably for the better, I suppose, given the intellectual powers at his disposal. I assure you, we can keep our friend under control." Nivellius, to his credit, is attempting to look reassuring, but he just looks as smug as usual.

Arrival at Cerrus
"As you wish, follow me." Quintus leads you up the stairs, and waves the guards aside. The guards move with varying degrees of urgency, and throw lazy salutes as you walk past. As you walk through the entrance chamber, Quintus gives a disgusted sigh. "If things were normal around here, I wouldn't be forced to tolerate such sloppiness."

Ahead of you lies a pair of massive wooden doors, each with half of a wrought metal Aquila fastened upon them. A pair of guards stand in front of them, and in contrast to the pathetic display outside, they are better aware, armed, and armored. As Quintus approaches them, you hear a crisp snap as they stand at attention. Quintus orders them to open the doors, and they make haste to do so. The double doors smoothly swing wide open with a surprisingly low amount of effort, which you note as strange, as they are almost a meter thick.

As the doors open, you catch the sounds of several people arguing. Over the din, you hear a man's voice roar out "ENOUGH!"

The chatter dies down, and Quintus beckons you to follow him as he strides into the throne room. As you enter, you see several figures standing around a man seated on a throne of the same white stone as the palace. The man, presumably Governor Heimgarten, sees Quintus motioning with his hands, and stands up. "This discussion will continue later. For now, I want you all out of my sight." Murmurs of protest are cut short with a quick shout of "GO!"

As you walk down the fine carpet leading to the throne, six individuals file out opposite to you. They appear to be various advisers, notably from groups the Inquisitor mentioned as having split off. After they exit, the doors glide closed.

Now that he is no longer surrounded, you get a clear look at the Governor. Heimgarten is stocky, well built man, with a head of short black hair and a bushy beard, although it would appear that his hairline is starting to recede and several flecks of grey are dotting his beard. Interestingly, his nose appears to have been broken on at least one occasion over the years, and were he not clad in the robes of his station, he would not appear out of place working with his hands.

Heimgarten sits back down and looks over the group standing before him. "Quintus, did I not tell you that the Emperor himself heard our prayers? I asked for a way to smell out which of those damnable groups are truly loyal, and He sends me a pack of His hounds!"

"I'm pleased they saw fit to send a team, I was worried they'd decide the planet is too much trouble for them and just blast the whole damned thing." He tells you with a grimace. "Pass my gratitude along. I tried sending a few of my men to sort out this madness, first overtly and then covertly. The first teams to each group reported that they couldn't find anything wrong, and the second ones didn't report back at all. Now, at first I thought this was just the squabbling of petty tyrants, but this worries me."

He shakes his head and rubs his eyes. "I almost wish that if these groups have indeed turned on us, they'd hurry up and try to kill us man to man already. At least then they'd have the guts to face me as an enemy instead of disguised as a friend."

Arrival at Cerrus
"Like everything else about this blasted situation, it's unclear. It all came to a head about two weeks ago when two of the three sides left the city. My advisers were acting like children before that, although that proves nothing, they've always been contentious. As to the how, Pontifex Eurac and Master Burggraf apparently nearly came to blows." The governor chuckles. "I would have killed to see the bag of bones priest and that fat paper pusher fight."

"The PDF got involved when Burggraf tried to have the Ecclesiarchy detained. Instead of seizing them, they protected them on the way out of the city. They didn't get those orders from me, but if this was a coup, they would have already killed me. Every attempt I've made to get them back in the blasted city has failed, although they assure me that they're loyal to the Emperor, 'and all His faithful servants'. The local business heads and the borough leaders were concerned by all of this, so they up and took many of their people to the quarry near the ruins. Oddly enough, I think some of our local color joined them to protect them. Strange bedfellows, although unfortunate, because the more respectable criminals are who I'd usually send for something like after my men's straightforward approach failed."

"The city still has plenty of civilians in it, so my men are stretched thin, as you can see. For obvious reasons, I'm doing my best to appear neutral until I can tell who really is being a true servant of the Emperor. As such, I think the Administratum have hired some offworlder group as guards. Small outfit, think they were just stopping for supplies. Think they're under a Rogue Trader, but I don't have much intel on them."

"The only thing I have going for me at this point - and probably the reason they sent you instead of a firestorm - is that this doesn't appear to be a planetwide issue. My other cities report that while the respective orders have all contacted their peers, it would appear whatever they told them wasn't enough for the others to fight, and they report they're still loyal to me so long as I am loyal to the Emperor. I'm sure you see my problem; if I reject or support one of the groups, I may turn this schism from 'just a city' to 'planetary'."

"I understand. In fact it was because of your neutrality that made us come here first. I'd advise you continue to stay neutral until we determine which of these groups is true to the Emperor. Like you said best to contain the problem to one city. Rest assured Lord Governor that we will get to the bottom of this. Hopefully its nothing more than petty politics but one can never be sure with these kinds of accusations." She looks around at her comrades. "Well, anyone else have anything to ask the Governor before we get to work?"

Nivellius has been uncharacteristically quiet since entering the palace, and has been tapping away at a dataslate since you first addressed the Governor. Had it not been for the lack of augments, you would have mistaken him for Lhari. As if he noticed you thinking about him, Nivellius looks up and addresses the governor. "Lord Governor, if I may be so bold, do you happen to know what the Administratum was working on in the month prior to this, ah, situation?"

Heimgarten strokes his beard in contemplation. "To be blunt, no, I try to leave their day to day business alone. I can attempt to find out, but I'm uncertain how much they'll tell me directly, and asking the other cities' chapters for help will take time."

"You think perhaps they might tell a fellow Administratus?" Nivellius' typical smug aura palpably returns.

"Well yes, I suppose next you'll tell me that you happen to be one yourself?" The Governor sighs and gives Nivellius a bemused look. "I should have guessed."

Uncharacteristically during this entire this entire conversion Domonia has kept to herself with her head bowed with her hat covering her eyes as to avoid showing anyone them. Something about the governor felt off and she wasn't sure if his words could be trusted, so she did what she always does in these circumstances which molest her targets' minds for information.

After several failed attempts to break into to the governor's mind, a faint breeze blows past her and her allies, and everyone gets the feeling that somewhere in the galaxy something unfortunate just happened. There are no windows or open doors in the room.

Arrival at Cerrus
The tall man gives a thin smile. "Beg pardon for our rudeness, noble lords and ladies, we did not mean to intrude in your path. I am Johan Mellion, and this fine man of our most holy Ministorum beside me is Preacher Gustav." He gestures to the shorter man with a small flourish, and you can't quite tell if he's overly polite, or just making a mockery.

Gustav shakes his head. "As always, you give me too much fanfare. Perhaps if you showed as much devotion to the Emperor's Word as you do his people..." He sighs, and you swear you can see a twinkle in Mellion's eye. "We'll stop taking up your path and time, many apologies." '

"Quintus, always a pleasure. Almirah, you look lovely as ever."

"No trouble, just be sure to keep your head up. Alyss says in a level tone. Just in case we run into each other again, I'm Alyss Vance and these are my associates Lhari Gorgo, Cromwell, Domonia Sadistivus, Nivellius and Uroch. We will be spending some time in your city for the foreseable future, looking into this...conflict.." She gestures at each of them as she says their names.

The men offer polite greetings to each of you, although Mellion's gaze briefly lingers on Cromwell, and both are clearly curious about Uroch, but refrain from any questions they may have. With a final apology, they continue on their way.

Almirah leads you to your rooms, and tells you that should you need anything, she's reachable by the palace's intercom system. Conveniently, there is one in almost every sizeable room or hallway. With a slight nod of her head, she takes her leave.

"We made sure to disable the surveillance in your individual rooms, although the hall and rest of the palace are under strict surveillance. I'll stick around the palace until you head out, it wouldn't do to leave Lord Heimgarten alone with a bunch of heavily armed strangers." He winks. "As Almirah said, if you need anything while you're here, you should be able to reach me over the intercom."

You follow Quintus' directions an arrive at the armory. Four guards are stationed at the door, weapons slung in front of them. As they notice you, they snap up into salutes, and open the door. One of the guards approaches Alyss and gives her a slight bow. "Commander Quintus said to expect you, ma'am. I'm afraid that we don't have much to begin with at this location, and having everyone deployed at once isn't helping. Whatever you can find, feel free to take, just sign it out."

Arrival at Cerrus
As you enter the armory, you notice that most of the equipment racks and lockers lay empty. One would only need to add a layer of dust, and you might think that the room had been long abandoned. Fortunately, there are still assorted weaponry and armor lying about, although the majority are on what appear to be repair stations.

On the equipment racks and in the lockers:
  • 3 shock mauls
  • 7 shields, each bearing the arms of the governor's guards
  • 4 choke grenades
  • 20 laslocks that look like they haven't been touched since they were placed in their rack
  • 5 swords, none of them shiny
  • 3 flak vests, also bearing the arms of the governor's guards
  • 2 dented flak helms
  • 6 heavily scratched autoguns

On the repair stations:
  • A disassembled grenade launcher
  • A set of power armor, looking like it belongs to the most elite of the governor's guards. Unfortunately, it appears to be missing a power pack, rendering it useless.
  • A long las, periodically emitting multicolored sparks
  • A pair of scorched hand cannons, the grips were melted to a pair of flak gloves that you assume belonged to the previous user. The gloves were (thankfully) empty.
  • An intricately engraved power sword
  • A heavy stubber with a mangled barrel

In his eagerness to finally deal with machines instead of people, Lhari accidentally connects the compressor to the combustion switch, causing the launcher to explode in an impressive fireball. Shards of metal fly throughout the shop area, although you are all fortunate enough to avoid being hit with any parts large enough to injure. Unfortunately, several tools and machines were mangled in the process, making any other repairs you may wish to perform more of a challenge.

The guard that spoke to Alyss outside the door pokes his head in the room. "Everything alright in here, ma'am?"

Meanwhile, in Dominara's room...

After entering your room, it would appear to be a room for visiting dignitaries. While you have seen more luxurious lodging, it is by no means austere, with soft linens and artistically crafted furniture.  The Aquila is emblazoned on most of the furniture, but there is the occasional planetary sigil.

Once you have settled in for a bit, there is a knock on your door followed by a voice outside. "Ma'am, Lady Almirah sent me to bring you the wine that you requested."

After the girl leaves, Domonia grabs a glass off the table and puts her mouth around the edge to leave behind saliva residue as if she had drank it. She then grabs one of the bottles and pours herself one glass then immediately runs to the bathroom and pours it out into the sink. She then refills the glass to about half to give the impression that she has already been drinking and then lays back down casually on the couch before contemplating about the day so far.

For a backwater world such as this, these plebeians seems to have a bit more resistance than usual to my "charms". From what I can tell, it seems that morale is low and no one is telling the full truth about anything. The government is apparently being embargoed by the bourgeoisie which shows a sort of politicking, a game I enjoy playing myself, but so far little in the way of heretics has yet to be seen. Either way it's clear that no one can trusted which is why I'll let someone else have the first sip of wine, preferably that insufferable Nivellius. Emperor be damned! I hate backwater worlds such as these. If I wasn't currently on it I'd say just blast the damn world and be done with it.
