Episode 01: Riders of the Black Temple.
OOC: When you make your first post, please state two important things: 1) Where you are from, look at the province of Miyama map and establish a population not far from hex 0427 to make it your home or headquarters or the seat of your power (if you are a noble). Every hex is 3 miles and that is about one hour of walking in 5e terms. The place you choose as your home should not be more than 4 hexes (half a day walking) away. 2) What are your business in the mura, what brings you here, you can imagine any hook you like as long as it is coherent with your social class and occupation. Once there, as it is a small place, you meet the rest of the party which all know each other. If two of you agree you could get together to the mura or you could meet on the road and then partying.

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Description of the mura.
(This is what you see when you enter the mura).

Most of the buildings are minka (peasant house), homes of the families of the community. While each is different in detail, the general construction of each minka is the same. The
roof is made of a thick layer of rice straw thatch. The walls are wood lattice or, in some cases, rough-hewn planks. The main area of the floor is bare earth with an open hearth in the center. Around this area are wooden-floored platforms. The minka serves as a home, a workshop, and occasionally a barn for the family’s livestock.
The place has no inn. The buildings shaded on the map are the godown (storehouses) of the wealthier peasants. Each has a stone foundation and plaster walls. Normal godown have only thatched roofs, but these have tiled roofs. These buildings are actually stouter and more fire-proof than the minka since they hold all the treasures of each family.

Episode 01: Riders of the Black Temple.
Wrapped in an odd bright-colored patch-work cloak, staff in hand, a wide-brim straw hat on its bobbing head, an odd figure makes his way slowly across the wooden bridge, right into the Tosa mura proper. Hand on hat to prevent it from falling off, it raises its head to look up at the sun, but with a yelp is immediately blinded by the piercing blaze, and has to stop and look down, cursing and swearing, while blinking his eyes to restore their sight. After a brief moment when it could apparently see again, it lifts a hand to shade its eyes, squinting into the distant rice fields.

Glancing perfunctorily at a few farmers, bent-over double and hard at work planting their rice fields, the figure sees what it is looking for when the nearest godown comes into view - merciful shade from the sun. It quickens its steps into a faster vaguely comical waddle and makes its way towards it. Approaching the building, the figure slows down and looks around for anyone who might belong to the establishment - it would be rather rude to take shelter in its shade without permission.

Seeing nobody nearby however, it catches sight of a mound of moss-covered earth in the shade, tip toes to it, drops its staff, then promptly plops itself down with a sigh of relief. Pulling its rather long spindly legs together into a cross-legged position to rest those tired limbs, the figure takes off his straw hat and begins fanning itself.

Shido had been plodding in the hot summer sun for the last several hours. The journey from Awa mura normally takes 3 hours, but for him, it took a good 4 hours with his odd waddle. The crowd had been less than enthusiastic in Awa. Despite putting on his best efforts at performing, apart from scattered half-hearted applause, Shido managed to collect little more than a small fistful of coins. The previous year's harvest had been bad, and the lord's taxes weigh heavily on those farmers.

Well...hopefully tonight will be better in Tosa mura.

Fishing out his waterskin, the lad takes a good long sip of the cool water, replaces the stopper, then flops down on his back onto the soft grass for a nap. In almost no time, the lad, mouth open and dripping saliva, was snoring away happily, dreaming of fantastic dreams of grand castles, beautiful princesses, and roaring applause for his performances...

Episode 01: Riders of the Black Temple.
Riding in from the small but comfortable inn she has been staying at of late in nearby Awa the time passes quickly and easily in the back of the coach that the innkeeper quite happily arranged for her day trip.  Headed to the open market of Tosa to see if it is any different than the other nearby small towns Yessera hopes to at least find the change of scenery interesting.

Passing by the outskirts of town the coach rolls right on by an otherwise uninteresting snoring man, its occupant still inside the cool shade of the light cloth covered compartment.

This area was not much different than her native Haso. It had been a long walk but an interesting one none the less. Shido was a strange person with his slow ways but she had enjoyed his company. Securing a couple pieces of plump fruit from a vendor she ran over and sat down next to him silently handing him a piece of fruit. Holding it there for a minute she looked around the area taking in the sites. She looked over at Shido and noticed he was sleeping, shrugging she put away the piece of fruit and let her new friend sleep.

Episode 01: Riders of the Black Temple.
Yamano no Ken was reluctant to come down from the mountain (hex 0429), but he made disturbing discoveries involving powerful shapeshifting Oni.  As he descended into the valley he struggled with who he could trust to tell, and how he would convince them of what he'd seen.  He had no proof other than what he personally witnessed.  Who would believe him? He's spent the last few years in seclusion in the mountains living the life of a hermit.  Of course there were the occasional Hengeyokai that he talked to and they were most entertained by his stories of spirits and demons; but few men would trust the trickster animal folk.

As Ken's mind attempted to puzzle things out, he kept his hands busy by splitting vines to create a thin cordage. Spying the small farming village in the distance he cut down a thin piece of bamboo with a single quick swipe of his straight sword. A fancy knot later and he had a fishing pole.

When he reached the bridge he sat on it's edge and dropped his line into the water. A thorn pierce grasshopper floated lazily on the water's surface.  This was the best vantage point to meet others entering the village.  Some of the Hengyokai he'd met in the hills and forests were supposed to meet him here.  He was curious as to what would drive them out of hiding and into the thick of human culture, but he didn't pry, perhaps that's one reason why they trusted him.  If he were lucky enough to catch a fish, all the better, he had used the last of his rations on the walk here.

There he sat, woven basket fully covering his head, with only his long black hair poking out from beneath.  Wooden geta hung precariously off his feet as he dangled his legs over the edge of the bridge.  He hummed a tune from his youth, the words which once spoke of placating the spirits were lost from his memory.

Episode 01: Riders of the Black Temple.
As you pass or rest in the mura, you see a peasant boy, about 15 years old, running into
the village. He does not say anything, but is obviously upset. He runs to the minka of
his father, tugs at the man’s sleeve and points excitedly across the fields. You are too far away to hear what is said. The father in turn runs to the myusho and repeats the scene. A look of distress comes across his face. He leaves hastily, runs to the center of the village and begins pounding the alarm block (a piece of wood he hammers with a large mallet). Heads pop out of windows and doors slide wide. Screaming and crying, the villagers rush into the
streets, whirling about in panic, finally clustering at the dusty base of the alarm mound. Many of their faces tear-streaked, they shout and scream at the myoshu.
Over their voices, the myoshu bellows, “Family! Riders are coming! They are bandits!”. These words only increase the utter panic of the villagers. A chorus of screams
erupts from the older women and several of the weaker-willed men fall to their knees, sobbing. The outer fringes of the crowd begin to run away. Some take shelter in their homes, others hastily prepare to leave the mura. Only a few run for their spears, determined to fight. The women claw at and cling to these, pleading with them not to die foolishly.

Episode 01: Riders of the Black Temple.
Rudely awakened by the clanging alarm, Shido gets up, rubs his eyes, and there beside him was Li Lei.

"Er...Hullo. How long have you...erm...nevermind...shall we go take a look what's happening?"

Ever ready for excitement and trouble (Shido is frequently unable to distinguish between the 2), the young lad jumps nimbly to his feet. Gathering up his staff and pack, he gives a goofy grin to the Hengeyokai, then proceeds to race her in the direction of the ruckus. As he draws nearer, the yell of the myoshu rings out, causing him to slow down somewhat in his mad sprint. Turning this way and that, Shido squints all around in the distance, trying to catch sight of the said bandits...

OOC - 22:10, Today: Shido Mitsunari rolled 22 using 1d20+3.  Perception check.
Looking out for bandits.

Episode 01: Riders of the Black Temple.
Very nearly at the town square anyways when the alarm is sounded Yessera directs the coach driver to bring her near the Myusho where she at last steps out into the square, her silk clothing obviously designed for travel and with a minimum of tails and frills, but still several orders of magnitude more valuable than anything anyone nearby wears, and perhaps some of the houses they live in.   Not bothering to mince words she steps right up to the older man as he stops shouting and speaks to him ina calm, even friendly, tone.

”I am Yessera Njwa, as I have happened upon this auspicious event I will assist you in coordinating your response to the Raiders, first collect the men who wish to fight to protect their homes, bring them to your largest meeting hall, or food storage building, and work together as a last line of defense, then send two fast runners to carry the alarm over the bridge and to the market, but be sure they do not engage the raiders or return to you, tell them to fade into the wilderness.”

Huan-Kin-Fei listened all the turmoil but he thought the problem was some kind of animal or another little trouble, but never expected a group of riders coming to the mura. After he totally realized what was happening, he run as fast as he could towards the mustered forces. He had no big prowess for combat as he wished, but there was something he had plenty and that was HONOR. He would not allow some bandits in higher numbers to decimate humble and helpless peasants. The first he did what asking the man: where are the bandits coming from?

Already on her way over to the bridge to inspect it Yessera pauses to assess the old soldier's gear, and how he presents himself, all in one quick glance.  She then adds him to the plan.

”If you can conceal yourself below the bridge on this side we can wait until the raiders cross it, then draw their attention away from the town by surprising them, there may be a few other more worldly folks visiting the town as well, if they rally to the alarm we may have a chance at turning this into anything but a slaughter.”

Let's leave these men stand here in the center of the mura as a bait, the rest of us let's go to the bridge and follow your plan. I saw two bridges when I entered the mura. Which one should we go?

Yamano no Ken watched as the boy ran by, then turned his head once more as an alarm went off.  He stood on the bridge's edge, fishing line still in the water.  He then turned towards the north wondering what danger lurked.

Closing the distance to Kin Yessera gestures for him to accompany her to the bridge across which the raiders are most likely to pass, and speaks to him quietly once they are away from the village folk.

”Best not to tell folks that are defending their homes that they are bait, particularly if they are.”
