Group 1: Cragmaw Hideout

Goblin 1 swings his sword at Bramble, but the nimble halfling blocks it with her rapier. (miss)
21:20, Today: Psynister rolled 14,6 using d20+4,d6+2.  Goblin attack.

Goblin 2 tries his luck, but Bramble parries it with such ease that it may as well have never happened. (miss)
21:20, Today: Psynister rolled 5,4 using d20+4,d6+2.  Goblin attack.

Goblin 3 shoots at Bramble with is bow, but the arrow flies over her head and shatters against the stone pillar on the opposite side. (miss)
21:20, Today: Psynister rolled 12,7 using d20+4,d6+2.  Goblin attack.

Goblin 4 was killed by an Eldritch Blast from Talin. (dead)

Goblin 5 was killed by a crossbow bolt from Xander. (dead)

Goblin 6, seeing that reinforcements have arrived, rushes over to the eastern wall and pulls a lever. The pool of water on the north-west side of the bursts out of its wooden confines as a trap is triggered to release it. Xander, a wall of water comes rushing toward you. Xander, you need to make your choice of a Dexterity Saving Throw to try to avoid being swept away by the water. If you roll a 10 or higher, post your actions next round as though nothing happened )

The hobgoblin points with his large, spiked weapon, toward the group. "Kill that halfling! They dare to face Klarg? Weak! Stupid! Foolish! Klarg gonna crush your skulls and eat your heart!" (Dodge action)

A wolf comes walking out of the hobgoblin's cave, growling at Bramble. (Dodge action)

Talin, seeing that the threats to the rear have been handled by your new allies, moves back into the main cavern and shoots a blast of magical energy at the goblins there. His aim is off and the blast goes a bit high, slamming into the far wall with a spray of shattered rock. (miss)

Bramble retaliates against the goblins, shoving her rapier deep into the goblin's stomach. (5 damage) The goblin still stands, but was clearly wounded by that one.
21:33, Today: Bramble Burrfoot rolled 23,5 using d20+5,d8+3.  Attack w/ Rapier.

Teranthvar stabs at Goblin 1 with his own rapier, but it seems the little sucker learned his lesson from Bramble, and blocks this one. (miss)

Goblin 1 swings at Bramble again, but once more the angry halfling refuses to take a hit. (Miss)
11:03, Today: Psynister rolled 6,5 using d20+4,d6+2.  Goblin attack.

Goblin 2 tries to find an opening in the halfling's defenses while she's distracted by the others, but his attack is also parried as though it were nothing. (miss)
11:04, Today: Psynister rolled 13,5 using d20+4,d6+2.  Goblin attack.

Goblin 3 fires an arrow at Bramble, headed straight for her heart. Bramble swipes at the arrow with her rapier to knock it aside, but instead she cuts it in half and knocks the arrow slightly off target. Unfortunately for her, the feathered portion of the shaft splits off and sings a few inches into her neck. Bramble coughs, blood spilling from her lips, and she falls over bleeding to death. (Bramble is unconscious and dying)
11:04, Today: Psynister rolled 22,3 using d20+4,d6+2.  Goblin attack.

Goblin 6 fires an arrow at Bramble as well, but as the halfling had already fallen, the arrow flew over her unconscious form and landed in Talin's left shoulder instead. Talin takes 6 damage
11:08, Today: Psynister rolled 23,6 using d20+4,d6+2.  Goblin attack.

Klarg takes advantage of the new opening left behind by Bramble's fallen form to rush up and fill the gap. He takes the large spiked club and slams it brutally into Talin's chest, crushing the collar bone, and sending the tiefling into a collapsed heap on the ground. (Talin is unconscious and dying. Roll 1d20 with no bonuses, and post the result. On a natural 20 you regain 1 HP and are conscious again. Otherwise, just post the roll, no actions.)

The Wolf doesn't want to hold back with Klarg now up in the mix, but he's got nowhere to go for a living target, so he bites Bramble's arm and gives the halfling a vicious shake. (Bramble fails two death saves, still alive)

Xander manages to leap up onto the side of the cave, letting the water rush by beneath him until it was safe for him to move forward. He rushes in to assist as best he can, aiming for the first and largest target - Klarg. He levels his crossbow and sends a bolt sinking deeply into the hobgoblin's gut. (10 damage to Klarg)

Talin is dying. (Make a Death Saving Throw, as described above.)

Bramble is bleeding out, but still alive. For now. (Death Save 17)

Teranthvar continues, unsuccessfully, to assault the lead goblin. (Miss)

Melathos assaults the hobgoblin as well, sending a blast of fire that burns into the creature's left side of his face and neck. (7 damage to Klarg)
11:28, Today: Melathos rolled 24,7 using d20+5,d10.  Firebolt.

Klarg shouts in rage, clearly feeling the effects of the two attacks that just rocked his world.

Dakath lets loose an arrow, but it sticks hard and fast in a goblin's shield. (miss)

Xander sinks another crossbow bolt into Klarg's chest, causing the massive goblinoid to drop to one knee, supporting himself with his weapon. (6 damage to Klarg) His threat doesn't seem to have phased the goblins just yet, but Klarg is definitely looking shaken.

Talin still lies bleeding on the floor. (make another Death save. You need 3 successes before you get 3 fails)

Bramble coughs up some blood, but continues to hold onto life. (2 pass, 2 fail)

Teranthvar takes advantage of Klarg's injured state to remove himself from the danger, retreating to the top of the stairs. (move successful)

Melathos points a finger at the lead goblin and three bolts of magical force shoot out of his finger. The first slams into the lead goblin's head, killing it. The other two arrows carry on, piercing into the chest of the third goblin, crushing its ribs, and killing the goblin instantly. (Goblins 1 & 3 are dead)
14:28, Today: Psynister, on behalf of Melathos, rolled 5,4,3 using d4+1,d4+1,d4+1.  Magic Missile.

Dakath fires another arrow, and once again it finds no purchase in flesh as Klarg dropping to his knees from the previous blow caused him to no longer be standing where he was just a moment before when Dakath released. (the dice roller hates you, D)

Goblin 1 is dead.

Goblin 2 tries to move to assist Klarg, and goes after Dakath with his poorly crafted sword. The archer proves to be a bit too agile however, and dodges the stroke. (miss)
14:13, Today: Psynister rolled 13,6 using d20+4,d6+2.  Goblin attack.

Goblin 3 is dead.

Goblin 6 fires an arrow at Melathos and the arrow buries half of its length into Melathos's arm. (4 damage to Melathos)
14:13, Today: Psynister rolled 16,4 using d20+4,d6+2.  Goblin attack.

Klarg looks as if he wants to kill Xander, but instead he falls back into the larger cave to the south. (no longer visible)
14:14, Today: Psynister rolled 22,12 using d20+4,2d8+2.  Klarg Smash.

The Wolf rushes into melee now that there is an open slot to do so. It leaps at Dakath, clamping its jaws on the ranger's forearm and giving it a powerful shake. (6 damage to Dakath)
14:14, Today: Psynister rolled 16,6 using d20+4,2d4+2.  Wolf Bite.

Teranthvar tries to move slightly up, peeking out above the rock in the path to eye Klarg, unsure if he needs a line of sight to make his message cantrip work. He attempts to send a message to Klarg hoping to create some confusion in the battle. He whispers to him "Grol commands stop!"

Edit: I clearly missed that he ran into the larger cave, but I suppose worth a shot if the cantrip doesn't need to actually see the target.

Xander sinks yet another bolt into his target, this time choosing the wolf. (8 damage to wolf)

Talin lies in a pool of his own blood, and though it continues to flow it does seem to be less than before. (make another Death save)

Bramble draws in a quick breath, her eyes flashing halfway open...and then her final breath is released as she lies dead on the floor, eyes still open. (Bramble is dead)
15:34, Today: Psynister, on behalf of Bramble Burrfoot, rolled 5 using 1d20.  Death Save. Third failed save.

Teranthvar uses magic to attempt to send a message to Klarg. Unable to see him, he's unsure if the spell worked or not. He cast it, he knows that much, but no more.

Melathos sends another barrage of magical bolts flying through the air. The first slams into the wolf's ribs and the wolf lets out a soft wimper as it falls dead. (Wolf is dead) The other two bolts sail into the nearest goblin, clearly wounding the creature but not killing it.
15:39, Today: Psynister, on behalf of Melathos, rolled 4,2,3 using d4+1,d4+1,d4+1.  Magic Missile.

Dakath seeing that the wolf is now dead, strikes at the goblin nearest to him. The blow is blocked by the goblin's shield. (miss)

Goblin 2 throws down his sword and starts begging for mercy. (Surrenders)

Goblin 6 listens to Xander's command to kill Klarg...he looks at the situation around him for half a second before he goes running off to the southern cavern. (runs after Klarg)

Klarg is nowhere to be seen.

The Wolf died.

Combat is effectively over at this point. The area to the south, as you'll see when you get there, has a passage that leads down to the first room, and Klarg and Goblin 6 both use it to escape.

You have one goblin prisoner right now.

Talin, you still need to make that death save to see if you stabilize or continue bleeding out.

Xander successfully stabilizes Talin, stopping the tiefling's blood loss. He still lies unconscious on the ground, but the immediate threat to his life has passed. He commands the final goblin to go and get medicine.

The goblin looks uncertain for a moment before he slowly edges back to the large southern cave, toward the supplies Xander had directed him to.

Teranthvar drops down to the ground, feeling the injuries he sustained during the fight actually register in his brain now that the adrenaline is starting to wear off.

Melathos follows the goblin to see what was in the next room, and confirms that Klarg and the other goblin from before have both disappeared down the chute on the western wall.

The group settles down for a rest with an undiscovered room to the south, and another across a bridge to the west. Twenty minutes pass by and Dakath reports hearing the sound of tumbling rocks, small rocks, somewhere in the cave. The party becomes alert, watching and waiting, listening for signs of approaching enemies.

Nothing.

Time drags on as everyone waits for the worst with half of your party barely left standing. Seconds turn to minutes, and still they drag on with no sign of the source of the sound.

Nothing.

After an hour, Talin finally comes to, and everyone feels as refreshed as they can, given the circumstances.

Everyone who is injured can spend their one hit die to restore hit points. Your class determines your hit die, which for most of you is a d8, Dakath has a d10. You have one hit die per level of your character, which is currently 1, and you can spend available hit dice when you take a rest, rolling the die and adding your Constitution modifier. You heal for that amount.

Half of your total Hit dice are restored after taking a long rest (8 hours).

Dakkath leads the party into the southern cave.

Sacks and crates of looted provisions are piled up in the south end of this large cave. To the west, the floor slopes toward a narrow opening that descends into darkness. With no sign of the large goblinoid leader, Klarg, the group quickly decides that he most likely used that path for his own escape when he saw how quickly the goblins were destroyed. In the middle of the cavern, the coals of a large fire smolder.

As the party makes their way around and verifies that the cave is secure, they take a moment to investigate the supplies.

The piles of sacks and crates are mostly marked with the image of a blue lion. Hidden among the supplies is an unlocked treasure chest that likely belonged to Klarg. Dakkath moves over to the side and pries the lid open, angling the chest such that any trap within would likely strike the wall harmlessly, but the lid opens without incident.

Inside there is a large collection of silver and copper coins, two vials with a bright red liquid inside, and a small statuette of a frog made of jade stone with tiny golden orbs for its eyes. . Without taking the time to count all of the coins individually, the estimated value of the coins would be 15-20 gold pieces.

Xander will identify the two vials with bright red liquid. He does this by dipping the tip of his dagger into the vials and sampling a drop.

Dakath remains silent, confirming what he knew to be already true in the direction the goblinoid leader went.  He was sure that his trail would not be that hard to pick up.  Collecting the gold Dakath distributes it evenly among the group.

looks like we have a buyer then.  What do we do next? Do we track Klarg or continue on in the cave past the bridge? Sounds like there could be others held captive down there. Hard to get goods out in an unsecured cave too

I wonder if this is special in anyway.

Teranthvar hangs on to the figurine and awaits any objections.

I think it would be somewhat irresponsible leaving captives here to their fate, so who's leading us into the dark over there?

I think we should go over the bridge up here instead of doubling back to that nook we passed on our way in. Klarg had to have gone that way.

it maybe better to scout but I feel like we are short on time.  The more we delay the worst our chances of saving any captives. The greater Klargs lead on us. We gain nothing by resting, come friends, we need to move

Marching Order: Dakath, Teranthvar, Xander, Melathos, Talin

Having decided to cross the bridge of the upper section, the group pushes forward with their healthiest members in the lead, realizing that they had not a single melee-combatant left alive. Unless you count Teranthvar and his rapier.

Across the bridge lies a narrow pathyway that curves west and south, leading to a larger opening further down. The group moves slowly and cautiously, wary of other goblins that might be lying in wait. Instead, they see the corpse of Klarg lying on his back, with the shafts of three goblin arrows sticking out of his chest. The unexpected sight both increased caution and eased it, and Dakath finally moved forward when he saw a note next to the corpse.

As the group pushed on into the room you find that the large cave is divided in half by a 10-ft high escarpment. A steep natural staircase leads from the lower portion to the upper ledge and the air is hazy with smoke from a dying cooking fire, and pungent from the smell of poorly cured hides and unwashed goblins. Soiled bedroll are laid out around the fire but there are no signs of the goblins.

Dakath, Xander, and Melathos secure the area while the others go to examine Klarg and the note. The note looks like it was written by a child with arthritis, "Yeemik thanes yu for dedd Klarg. Yeemik is nu leeder. Is thanes, Yeemik leds yu all lif, an leds yu has humon."

As the note-readers question what human the goblin Yeemik was referring to, Dakath spots a human man lying wounded against the far wall of the upper section of the cave. He is bound, clearly beaten, and only barely conscious. Those of you who interacted with the dwarf who hired you, Gundren Rockseeker, recognize this man as Gundren's companion, Sildar. The one who was riding the other horse you found ambushed on the road.

Teranthvar follows closely behind Dakath taking in the environment and Klarg's corpse. He drops his guard a little bit until he notices the badly beaten man. He taps Dakath's shoulder to get his attention and points.

Perhaps that's the captive? I'll go see it he is still alive. I hate to dip into our spoils, but we might need one of those potions.

As he doesn't see any imminent danger, Teranthvar starts walking towards the captive, rapier drawn.

The man was clearly beaten and tortured while he was here, and only barely hanging on to life. Xander administered the potion and watched as wounds closed and bruises mostly faded away. The man appeared to be somewhere in his fiftieth year, and looks as though he a rather seasoned fighter, showing that he likely fell purely to being outnumbered rather than out-skilled.

"*cough* When Klarg came and commanded the goblins to fight, I felt hope followed by despair, knowing how many of them I'd seen. When they killed him and simply walked away, I had no idea what to think, but hoped it would lead to freedom. Thank you, friends. The goblins caught us on the road."

"They brought me here, but they were looking specifically for dwarves under orders from one they called the Black Spider, so Gundren was taken elsewhere. He and his borthers, Tharden and Nundro, have located the entrance to a place called Wave Echo Cave. Gundren had a map leading to the entrance, but the goblins took it and sent it to a place they called Cragmaw Castle. I don't know which castle they're talking about, but someone in Phandalin may know."

"This isn't the first time we've heard of people being ambushed along the road, which is why we hired you to move the goods. One of my associates, a man named Iarno Albrek, disappeared two months ago. I came hoping to investigate his disappearance. I must get to Phandalin to look into Iarno's disappearance, to see if I can find whether he was also captured by these goblins, or if something else is at foot. The goblins stripped me of everything I own, but if you can escort me to Phandalin, I will requisition gold from the Alliance once we reach town, as reward for your rescuing me."

Feeling the effects of the potion wearing away the majority of the damage he had taken, Sildar struggles but manages to get to his feet. "Well, you have my gratitude. That potion worked wonders, but it boggles the mind how it can make you feel so much better yet still terrible at the same time."

With Sildar rescued and the goblins cleared out of the cave, you've successfully completed the first dungeon. Congratulations on not getting yourselves killed! Well, most of you.

Now it's time to decide on your next steps. What do you want to do with the goods in the cave? What do you want to do with the oxen and cart full of supplies you were already escorting to Phandalin? What do you want to do about Gundren? Where to, dear players? Feel free to discuss IC or in OOC.
