Re: OOC thread. #2
We often stereotypically think of psychopaths as raging, scheming destroyers or killers, as so often depicted in movies.
But, as I understand (and I'm no psych major, though I play one here) the crux of it is being amoral and unable - I mean like completely - to empathize with others.
They aren't quite unfeeling - they still feel things such as anger, resentment, envy and jealousy. That's why some of them are dangerous.
Anyway, a severe emotional cutoff doesn't = stability, whatever it's cause. It's a detachment or mask for other underlying issues. So, it is entirely possible for someone like that to 'go insane.' Which probably means something has overwhelmed them, or punched through their defenses, to trigger what lays beneath.
Someone like that needs professional help, of some kind. Psychopaths and similar are often intelligent, talented, or even gifted people, in some way. Like anyone, they deserve a chance to be helped, not labeled or reviled. But, you do have to be careful in dealings with them.
