GM, 11 posts Wed 18 Jul 2018 at 22:28 | OOC ChatThe game will use the default pantheon, ie, the Forgotten Realms pantheon. However, since religion doesn't necessarily equal deitiesn, you're free to create a religion if you wish. Having said that, as the info thread indicates, I plan to make the gods more than window dressing in this world so if you also wish to create a god for your religion, you may, but that particular god would probably not go beyond said window dressing. That's not to say the deity couldn't, mind you. I just want to up front with you that it's unlikely.
Of course, if the party wants to spend the entirety of its time in damp cellars or kobold caves none of this matters since Lethander and Myrkul, for example, probably aren't concerned with such things.

GM, 12 posts Thu 19 Jul 2018 at 00:04 | OOC ChatIt's not. I'm just using the pantheon. The setting itself is just something I made up to give myself, and the players, a clean slate with which to work.
To those of you who have submitted RTJs, I know I said I'd get to you this morning or afternoon but, frankly, I'm overwhelmed by the sheer number of you. Rather than send dozens of copies of this message individually I'm saving myself some time and writing this here. I hope you're seeing this. I will respond to you this evening.
Also, I've decided to skip running another non-D&D game so, again, due to the sheer number of you, I've been inspired to run two groups here. These groups will consist of 5 players each but that still leaves a lot of people out. For that I am sorry but running 6+ groups is just not in the cards for me.
The groups will have a common room at an inn where they can share their glorious stories but otherwise, for my own sanity, the groups won't intermingle on adventures swapping players back and forth.
Again, tonight, one way or the other, you will get a response from me with a go no-go. Thanks for your patience.

DM, do you have any preferences for the use of bio lines? And do we get trinkets? If so, should we choose, roll or will you hand them out?

Good questions. I'd prefer to see AC, HP current/max, HD current/max and passive perception in the bio lines. Players should roll for trinkets.
I'll update the appropriate threads with that info.

I think it may be fun to have a friendly competition between groups. Perhaps I'll keep a tally on kills, gold earned, etc. Matters of group pride I suppose. Thoughts?

Are we limited in Alignment? And are you planning to let that be big part of play or just a mechanical detail?

Agreed. Just friendly rivalry. I wouldn't want it to turn to something negative though like running up numbers just to get the "high score." Maybe it's not such a good idea...
I'd rather not impose alignment restrictions but at the same time I'd prefer there not be evil characters. The reason for this is because it's exceedingly rare that they're played in a way that makes sense within the context of the party and the game as a whole. Now, it can definitely be done, which is why I'm not imposing a restriction, but if a character's alignment starts causing a disruption of the game I'll have to address it.

For me competition between groups would only be interesting if we are doing the same adventures and compare approaches to scenarios afterwards. Otherwise some way to measure reputation within the Inn/Town might be a go. I don't mind with or without.

If not, can tweak the background a bit to include some travel.

Everything outside of the Hinterlands can be considered a blank canvas. You're free to come up with whatever you want out there within reason. By within reason I simply mean that it generally conforms to something one could expect to find in a D&D setting and fits within the prime material plane. The Hinterlands is not plopped in the middle of plane of water, for example. However, if you want to say that there's a fiefdom named Agoso a week's ride to the south of the Hinterlands that's perfectly fine.
Now, when it comes to matters of what's inside the Hinterlands, I would prefer you leave that up to me. However, if you need to say there's a tiny, nondescript hamlet off in some general direction I'm fine with that. Just be as vague as possible with it and that's fine. Besides, you're not there right now so who's to say it's still there? DUN DUN DUUUUUUUN!
Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view) Maybe if you'd write once in a while you'd know your mother's entire village was obliterated by an ancient red dragon! But no! You're off "adventuring" with those weird friends of yours. Did that one girl have horns? I don't like the look of her.

Do you have a planned starting fir the game time thought out? When do you expect us to have our characters finalized?

Yes, the pocket change given as part of backgrounds can be used to purchase things prior to the start. I'm not sure what you mean by "those prizes" though.
Yes, you can make up your own bonds, flaws, etc. I consider the lists in the book(s) to be simple lists for use with quick rolling characters or when someone just can't think of something. Your character is not limited by the background you select.
If you mean do I have a starting date selected, I'd prefer to start Monday if possible. It's not a firm date though in the sense that if people need more time to ready sheets and what not then we can start Tuesday or Wednesday.

The prices mentioned in PHB for items. In some games where there are remote areas, things are more expensive in those areas. Would that apply to Hinterlands?

GM, 24 posts Fri 20 Jul 2018 at 21:43 | Re: OOC ChatOh, prices. Yes, for now that's fine. Prices of more exotic things will go up considering the remote location but basics, and anything you can afford with the few gold pieces you'd be starting with, is book price.

Looks like character sheets are ready for everyone save for one person who advised me it wouldn't be ready until early next week. A Monday start it is!
