[Act II, Scene XI] The Kobold Kaverns

After equipping the unexpected guests with the weapons and knowledge to clear the mine of the basilisks once and for all, the mysterious creature of Law slithers back into its radiant cavern and returns to its peaceful contemplation.

The party continues spiraling downward, following the rails of that deadly machine that murdered your companions.

They find another staging area. Judging from the shattered rocks on the tracks, the kobolds must have had the machine's furnace running as a fireplace, and were taken off guard when the switched rail sent the machine and the entire tribe barreling upwards towards their doom.

There are chunks of statuary scattered about everywhere; of animals, humanoids, and probably gnomes. There's one statue still intact, however. The kobolds seem to have put it to good use, as its covered with snake skins, crab-spider shells, and rat pelts being left to dry.

After doing the unsavory work of removing the litter, the party realizes that this statue is that of a human. The lack of armor, the sole dagger at the belt, the slung backpack almost certainly laden with a spellbook within; add to that the open mouthed frozen pose of horror on his face, all sure signs that is an adventurer who stumbled up onto the wrong end of a basilisk.

Brother Brodd:
Brodd follows the Entity's directions on how to do the antidote and gives it to the adventurer as instructed.

Brother Brodd takes one of the two bottles of oil of depetrification, and takes a rag and begins coating the statue with the blue and glittery compound, just like when he was assigned to clean devotional statues back at the Solar Temple.

Soon there's a crackling sound, and in a puff of years and dust and grime the statue jerks into life, fabric and skin taking natural hues as frozen thoughts play out.

"LOOK AWAY! LOOK AWAY!"

He turns to run, only to find himself surrounded by an entirely different set of companions. Confusion sets in on his face.

"Wait...who the blazes are you people?!"

The fact that they were now moving, putting one foot in front of another, seemed to lift the spirits of the surly old cleric a notch or two. He grumbled less at Chomper and his attitude toward the others, while certainly not warm by any means, was at least more tolerable than it had been while little progress was being made. As a devout of the Wandering God, walking was an act of worship if, in the doing, the steps lead to further exploration and discovery.

"I guess the worm-lady wasn't lying." His response to the near miraculous de-stoning of the mage.

"We're hoping to avoid your fate spell-slinger." Regdoc said to the bewildered bewitcher.

"Brother Brodd, did you get an extra crystal for this lad?"

Chomper sniffed at some of the discarded rat hides, finding one to his liking he began tearing at it.

It took a moment for him to compose himself and stand back up. "What day is it? What year is it?"

"The manticore is outside, back that way." Einhard pointed from the direction they came. "The entrance has collapsed, so forward is the only option. These shards can be used like mirrors to reflect the basilisk gaze back. The weapons given to us will work against the gargoyles. And apparently the mechanism to open the exit ahead of us is submersed under water... hence the water breathing potion." The knight shrugged. "If we survive all that, then I suppose we have a shot at rescuing my niece. The choice is yours if you wish to see some real adventure or die of starvation in this god forsaken mine."

Manticores, basilisks, gargoyles and no doubt a feisty clutch of lava-hens at some point. No, this is by no means going to be easy..."

Dwarghar stares in awe as the statue turns flesh. Amazed he listens to the story. Then they begin to discuss the manticore and going forward and he almost thinks about his rotten situation and the futility of being here.

I know what you’re thinking Rocky, it can’t get any worse right? Just wait, I think that every so often.

Then he decides to look around. Hmmm if this was where they were living, maybe they left something useful.

He searches the area half hoping to come across some Dwarven mail.

The cleric breathed heavily, wheezing a bit. He rubbed at several places where the falling rocks had caused deep bruises. "Are you sure that... Entity, didn't have a shield? Did you even ask?" Dwarghar looks around. He makes his way to the side of where they can attack and looks for a way to get back at the enemy.

So are the Kobolds visible? - are the rocks coming from holes or containers in the ceiling or what? They must have a finite attack range or number depending on how they are deployed.

Dwarghar peers up the steep slope of the mineshaft's spiraling trails and switchbacks, but the torches the humans carry prevent your darkvision from finding the source of the threats above.

Safe to say Dwarghar was as surprised to see the kobolds as they were to see him. The thump of the chest landing on the rocky floor distracts the kobolds from the rude lutist just in time to evade the trapper's charge.

Aside from a kobold corpse tumbling to the elf's feet, no further threat comes.

Higher up, the three look around awkwardly and find no one else to fight, and no further switchbacks.

At the other end of the party, Chomper sniffs at a petrified rat's nose. He pauses, then stares down the trail, then back at the rat. He starts to whimper and lays down, covering his eyes with his paws.

[Act II, Scene XI] The Kobold Kaverns

In reply to DM (msg # 113):

Manaku kneels over the corpse. Dead as the goblin kobold is, its open unmoving eyes distress him and he gently traces his hand over its face closing its eyes.

Then he checks its pockets.

He looks at Alientra and Harald. "We will not survive divided here. I'll join with the guys in the vanguard if I can.  Do as you wish, yet I recommend you do the same." Not waiting their replies the red-eyed elf dashes forward quietly, bow in hand and an arrow in the string, hoping to find and reunite with the group of Einhard, Brodd, Regdoc & Creston.

Kobold. The cobalt blue scales, the doglike face, vestigial tail and small jutting horns mark it as such. Goblins in this region (like Yagi) are more of a brick red in color and more humanoid overall.

Dwarghar stands leaving his hammer on the ground and holds his hands open to Leohart. Take it easy my friend. There is a way out, there is. We will get there as a group. The others are just ahead, there. We have enough to find our way through. You have survived.

He looks serious. Sometimes surviving is difficult.

Behind a broken minecart you find a drainpipe with an iron grating placed in front of it, about 4 feet in diameter.

"New friends," Leohart said, turning to Dwarghar and Amalrik but unable to remember if they had been introduced to him by name or not, "your friends need to know about this concealed drain pipe. It is surely the way the kobolds navigate these mines, and may present us a less dangerous way around the basilisks."

Dwarghar hefts a large load of silver into the Barbarian’s (Amalrik) hands. If they keep paying like this, I’ll take every Kobold! He looks at the pipe Ha! Yes yes my friend, great idea, how much of this silver do you want to carry?

Dwarghar divides up the silver between himself and Amalrik and Leohart, then calls down.

Leohart, let me know if you want a third, or none or 20 lbs or whatever.

He then looks into the tunnel.

Where does this go?

Once the party is reunited, they examine the tunnel. It's the perfect size for a gnome or halfling, and Chomper. A dwarf would have to keep their head low and a human would have to crawl.

Trying to squeeze a horse and a mule through would be ridiculous.

Leohart had taken a single silver piece. He turned it over nervously between his fingers while blinking at Einhard. "It is unlikely a sewage pipe in a mine," he countered. "It is more likely used for ventilation, meaning we'll have more fresh air there than anywhere else in the tunnels. It will be dangerous, for certain, but would mean less instant death than tunnels full of basilisks."

It seems to slope downward. No light and the air is...not fresh.

The kobold slain on the ledge was carry a large wrench, one assumes for use as a club. The other kobold was thrown down the embankment and who knows where his weapon fell?

Did you divide up the silver with the other two in your squad, or are you trying to drag the chest back down the switchback?

We discussed the silver IC earlier Amalrik is carrying half, Dwarghar has the other half minus the one piece the wizard chose to carry.

Dwarghar takes the wrench before making his way to the others. There might be a nut or a gear to turn before we’re out.
