[OOC] New Gamebook Purchases

As an early Hanukkah present I bought two Old School Essentials: Advanced Fantasy PDFs. One is Genre Rules, which re-introduces some AD&D concepts in a way that doesn't unbalance the B/X system we're currently using. The other is Druid & Illusionist Spells. The second book is pretty straight forward.

I'm not going to dump this whole ruleset on you now. No drow triple-class characters here.

There are some classes that we improvised here that can be "updated". You'll find these abilities make you more powerful, so I've already updated your sheets if needed:

  • Barbarian (Amalrik) - Looks pretty much as we envisioned it, you might have a couple more skills and some abilities at higher levels we didn't have to worry about yet.
  • Bard (Harald) - It defines the bard singing abilities better. One place it differs is it lets the bard learn Druid spells starting at 2nd level. But I'll houserule that there are different Colleges of Bards, some study Arcane, some Druidic, and the Cantors learn Clerical hymns, so you can decide when you level up.
  • Gnome (Pock) - I used a preview of the rules to make your character so I think you're already set.
  • Knight (Einhard) - This is their take on the Cavalier class. You've already done a great job of playing the spirit of a Knight. Interesting tweak: as 2nd level you're technically still a squire even though your spouse is already a Baron. Next level the other nobles will start taking you a bit more seriously and you can have your own coat of arms instead of an escutcheon around your spouse's arms.
  • Paladin - Not really Einhard's path, but it was Starshell's.

Other Races/Classes from the Genre book:

  • Acrobat
  • Assassin (and Bounty Hunter, saw that as a non-evil variant in a Dragon Magazine once)
  • Druid
  • Half-Elf (I'm reticent to use this one given how rare Elves are supposed to be)
  • Half-Orc
  • Illusionist
  • Ranger (though the Scout class is a bit more versatile combat wise without the Druid spells)
