Salutations one and all. I'm playing Protean, the Nova. It is an elemental who is still trying to learn exactly how to wield its power with skill and grace. It does okay a good part of the time, but like a child learning how to walk, it stumbles a lot. Just when it stumbles it doesn't just fall down. I too look forward to playing with you all.

Oh, by the way, as an Outsider, I'm choosing the Cheerful demeanor, which means everyone has Influence over my character. I mean, you all know how to human, right? ;)

Humaning is one of the skills Protean has indeed picked up. It may not look the part most of the time, but it is socialized into human cultures pretty well. While we are discussing this stuff, I am likely to choose "Happy facade", so I will end up giving out influence to most people. I am likely to wait to specify who does and does not get it until we have everyone we are going to get, but I don't see much point in denying influence to people. It is a cool tool for interaction.

What is Rocket's favorite earth animal? Does she like earth animals? If she prefers the animals from her home, could she describe her favorite from home well enough for Protean to do a passable job copying its shape?

The influence mechanic does seem really cool! I've never played this system before, but my first impressions of it is that it's really neat. I kinda like the way it provides a framework for the story without bogging it down with a bunch of unnecessary numbers.

Rocket is conceptually based on the idea of Humans Are Space Orcs/Earth is Space Australia that I've seen floating around the internet. I imagine Rocket's people get television/movies/whatever much like the aliens in Futurama--entirely without context, and much lost in translation.

Consequently, an influential number of her people think the Jurassic Park franchise is a series of documentaries. Not everyone believes it. It's a bit like watching a Bigfoot found film. But it's enough that it adds to the reputation Humans have among her people. (Humans brought back apex predators? On purpose?) Earth is dangerous, and the reasons are as numerous as they are vague. Which is why being dared to go there is the equivalent of being dared to spend the night in a haunted house.

All of that is to say that Rocket's favorite animal is probably a raptor. Terrifying as all hell, but kinda badass.

I assume you wanted us to reply to the world info thread with the post containing the information on our characters, but it is locked. If I am wrong, and you wanted them here or something, I'm sorry. I just thought I would mention it so that I did the right thing when I was done with the questions.

Okay, don't take my lack of questions about Quarry as disinterest, I just don't have enough info on you to start asking questions. I am sure I will have them eventually as I try to work out relationships and what not. As to Rocket, you mention that part of the idea is based on the "humans are space orcs" idea and make mention of their history as pursuit predators. The fact that they walk down their prey and can survive broken bones. Does this mean her people are generally rather frail? If so, how does affect Rocket as a hero? Does she generally avoid getting hit? Does she have some way to handle it better than the normal person? Are our villains just not hitting that hard? Also, you indicated that she finds human slang interesting. Is this due to a lack of slang in her native language or that the content and nature of it is of interest? Basically, why does she enjoy it so much?

Sorry if the questions seem like pestering. I just figured it couldn't hurt to get to know each other better while we waited. Feel free to tell me that it is something best learned later or not at all.

Questions are good! If anything, it helps me get to know my own character better, too! Honestly, one of my favorite parts about writing is character building, and answering a series of questions is one of the best ways to do that ^_^

There may be some things that are best discovered as part of the roleplay, but I think I can answer most of those.

I mostly picked Toughness as a power because it was listed on the Outsider Playbook, but the more I read into the system and figure out how it works, the more I think about how I can flavor her abilities into a more cohesive concept. In this case, I think as a species, her people are a bit frailer than humans, and compensate for that with technology (it fits with her alien weaponry and rocket boots [hence the name]).

As for specific weaknesses, that's something that might come out as a result of one of her Moves, so I'll see if there's an in-game chance to elaborate.

So, there's something about her tech that protects her, like a force field or something. Truthfully, the person it most protects her from is herself XD She can be a bit of a dumbass and take unnecessary risks. Her tech is probably the reason she hasn't been permanently injured.

As for how it affects her as a hero...Rocket doesn't do anything out of a sense of heroism, especially. She does things because it's fun. She's a good person, generally speaking--she's not going to get her kicks by deliberately hurting people.

Now, if she's ever been seriously hurt, or whether others besides herself have been accidentally hurt because of her shenanigans...that's probably a character-building moment that may have some impact on Influence and potentially Labels, so I'll leave that for in-game.

Her interest in human slang is based on my own observation on how ridiculously colloquial the English language is, and how it has evolved so much over time. It's so infused with society and culture. I often wonder how that would look to someone with absolutely zero frame of reference.

Mostly, though, it's an excuse for me, as a player, to write a sass master, while hand-waving the language barrier ^_^

I'm curious about Protean as well. When was it created, and what forces were involved in its creation? Does it even know the answers to these questions? If it's been around for long enough, what kind of observations has it made of the human race and various cultures as they have evolved?

And, of course, if these conversations are better left in-character, then by all means, keep me in suspense ^_^

Its progenitors originally existed as a world in their own right. The fire elemental formed a "sun" within, the earth elemental formed a shell without. The air and water elementals took the middle forming an atmosphere and oceans. Think a dyson shell that had been allowed to grow out past the Oort cloud because its sun was powerful enough to sustain it. Within the shell, life developed and produced spiritual energy that was a tainted and mix version of their own energies. This energy just kept building up until some of the life learned how to purify it, stripping away the taint of the other elements until they were left with an energy like one of the elementals. They created magical effects while the corresponding elemental got to feed on the energy.

With this new power people developed and spread across their world and into its shell. They dug too deep and found the space on the other side. They spread across outer surface as well and then looked at the points of light beyond. The elementals were used to having their people and grew jealous that they might want to leave for other places. The same instincts that drove the people to explore their own world drove them to explore the world outside and the elementals couldn't stand to have them leave.

They tapped into the same ability that their people had hoping that they could increase their own power to grow the world large enough that they wouldn't have to leave. This would also serve to strip them of the magics that they had built their society on. They would have to find a new way to expand and leave if they were ever going to do it. The problem was that as they each purified the energy to get their portion of it, they left behind what was dross to them. The bits of spiritual energy that wasn't any of them. It was similarly useless to the people as they only saw value in the other four elements. The elementals could see that the were leaving bits behind, but didn't know how to make it what they needed. They experimented together until they finally made a horrible breakthrough.

The efforts had gestated a new elemental made up of that pure distilled essence and much as they had, it reached out to take its own power. The people were consumed along with that essential nature of the other elementals. The sun grew dim, the air grew thin, the land crumbled, waters dried up as the power of all of them was consumed in the creation of this new spirit. They no longer had the life they had endeavored to keep nor the power to keep out the portals that occasionally tried to make their way to them. In their final moments one of those portals transported them to earth and scattered them, ending the new spirit's gestation.

tl;dr:
It was created about 16 years ago and the forces involved in its creation were the spiritual energy from a world many millions of times the size of Earth and the power of four elementals that formed an independent star system. So, lots and lots of really powerful magics and spiritual energy were the forces involved in its creation.

Protean has grown up in the care of humans within a rather limited geographic area since arriving on earth. It understands that other cultures exist and has been taught a level of respect for them. At the end of the day though, it has been steeped in its host culture for its entire existence and hasn't really had a chance to see them evolve. Its parents may be ancient, but they view the universe through their personal lenses and haven't been on this world any longer than it has. They had more reason to travel, but they also have better things to do than try to educate Protean on cultures. They're kinda focusing on teaching it what are effectively the "how to walk" sort of lessons for a spirit.

Part of this is to keep the focuses of the stories well delineated. Rocket gets the limelight when it comes to not being being from around here and a spectator to their ways. Protean is very much like them by dint of being raised by them, but is dealing with issues of power. In the same way that Superman is technically as much an alien as the Martian Manhunter, but that is rarely a major factor for him. Instead it is about his role as a paragon and the like. Protean has to keep restraining its own power lest it hurt someone. It is still getting a feel for its powers, so until it stops walking into walls and tripping over its own feet it has to make sure that it is small enough that the environment survive the encounter. Until it is sure that it won't screw up it tries to keep itself small enough that the damage is manageable.

The other part of it is that I do not know enough about other cultures to do justice to something that has been exposed to them. I, as a player, can't really pull it off. It is far easier to just make it native to the culture I am used to and the physical dissimilarities and powers become the major thing driving a wedge in that regard.

tl;dr:
It is too young to know any other cultures or to have experienced their evolution.

Also, Hello, DonnyBrook. Welcome. I look forward to playing with you as well. I look forward to seeing what you bring to the table and hope that work goes well for you.

All right! Break time!

So, Donnybrook. I'm not 100% built just yet, RP-wise, but I'm figuring he's a kid who just figured there was danger in his neighborhood, and that gave him a sort-of right / duty / calling to do something about it. It didn't help that he'd been a fanboy of superheroes since he'd been rescued by one years ago.

I figure I'm going to go with the martial arts and acrobatics package. He's probably a real scrapper, and I've been sort-of considering him being a practitioner of either drunken-style kung fu (although he's certainly not old enough to drink!) or capoeira, or possibly both! A nice music-and-revelry fighting style, to highlight a bit of a never-say-die attitude.

I'm hoping for a good deal of social interaction with the group through the RP, and a lot of teen superhero fun! I'm also hoping I can flesh the character out some with the character generation process and the OOC chat!

Character creation will indeed help a lot with fleshing it out and the beacon is good for getting social interactions. There is a good chance that you will end up with high mundane and be the one whose shoulder is easiest to cry on. Not to mention that the outsider and reformed both tend to give a lot of really good social hooks to get that ball rolling as well. Nova's can end up in their own head a lot, but we also have conditions to clear. Comfort and support make that easier, so there is a good chance it ends up wanting to talk just to feel better or its conditions cause it to do things that lead to social situations. I think this cast is very likely to give the the chance to have them.

The drunken-style kung fu and capoeira are cool ideas. It will be interesting to see how you write those into your posts as they can be quite interesting to describe. I'm sure we can get you some alcohol if you really want it as a training aid, but you can do the movements without it. It does mean you are likely going to have to go toe-to-toe with the villains though. It should be interesting if nothing else. I am sure I will have questions over time and we'll have a great deal of fun together.

Protean, I adore pretty much everything about that origin. Fantastic in every sense of the word!

I have a feeling we are all going to get along famously. We overlap in drive and personality enough to create a bond, but not so much that we're stepping on each other's stories.

This is gonna be fun. I can't wait to start playing ^_^

Hello all. I'll be joining you as the Legacy.

My character will be the latest in a line of warriors to be trained in bushido and wield the magic spear and armor of Tadakatsu Honda. So very much a modern day samurai.

He'll be stiff, he'll be serious, and he'll be pretty bad at just chillin'. Which of course he'll have to learn :)

Indeed. Welcome. It will be great to have you. I look forward to seeing how you play off the others. Given my understanding of Rocket, she is definitely the one to teach you how to chill. The modern day samurai is a cool idea. It should be great to learn more about the history of your legacy and should offer an interesting contrast to some of the less serious people involved. It should make for some really interesting stuff.

Thank you both for the welcome.

And yeah, I started out just thinking that Legacy would be fun to play, then zeroed in on the powerset including Divine armor and weaponry. Obviously, the next step was to search for actual mythical weapons that might be fun, but without being too mainstream like excalibur or Mjölnir. I ended up finding Tonbokiri, one of the three legendary japanese spears (Which actually exists. It's a national treasure.) and fell in love with the awesome yet simple story behind it. basically, its name means "Dragonfly cutter", which it was named because it is said that it is so sharp, that when a dragonfly once landed on the blade it was instantly cut in two.
It being the spear of one of the most famed japanese samurai, who himself has some badass stuff attributed to him, the rest basically wrote itself.

So since then a loose "clan" has developed, where people worthy of wielding the armaments are trained in traditional bushido, both in the hope that one of them will be chosen by the spirit of Honda, and to support the one who is actually chosen.

They would basically be focused on upholding the ideals of bushido, honor in service and excellence in combat, which over time would have melded with the more modern heroic ideals of defending the weak and innocent while fending of the wicked.
