Deep Dive Rules Questions

This thread will be for answering Rules Questions for this game.  Sometimes we have conflicting rules, like the one I'm going to get into in my next post.  This thread is for these things to be hashed out.  I'll update this first post with the msg# for the questions if this grows beyond a few msgs or questions...

Deep Dive Rules Questions

When do I roll versus Unconsciousness for hitting or going below 0 HP?

This is a thorny one, but has a Kromm clarification.

As per Basic pg 419:
"In addition to the above effects, make a HT roll at the start of your next turn, at -1 per full multiple of HP below zero."

This is the rule I've always gone by... however... according to Kromm Basic 380 offers an incongruity:

The Kromm quote:
http://forums.sjgames.com/show...912&postcount=77

Kromm:
Per p. B380, "If you have zero or fewer HP left . . . You must roll vs. HT each turn to avoid falling unconscious." The current turn isn't excepted. You're supposed to roll on being taken to 0 HP or below. Injury effects are meant to be immediate – you don't wait a beat and then notice that your arm is off or your brains are scrambled.

The offending passage is on p. B419:
"In addition to the above effects, make a HT roll at the start of your next turn, at -1 per full multiple of HP below zero."
which would be clearer as:
"In addition to the above effects, make an immediate HT roll, at -1 per full multiple of HP below zero."
The later text:
Success means you can act normally, but must roll again every turn to continue functioning.
would then be better as:
Success means you can act normally, but must roll again at the start of every turn to continue functioning.

My argument:  This has never been FAQed, Kromm is off his nut on the happy herb.

Counter argument:  Kromm is the Line Editor of GURPS.

Deep Dive Rules Questions

As an aside, This matters for two reasons:

More HT rolls to stay conscious is more chances to become unconscious.
Whether or not you get to defend from other attacks on this turn.

As a related question, if you roll when you're first hit, and you're hit 5 times for 1 damage each, do you roll consciousness for each of those? (my gut feeling is no).

Only if you have only 1 HP.  Otherwise you roll when you hit a milestone; 0 HP, -1xHP, -2xHp, etc.

I think the only milestone that matters for unconsciousness is 0HP. Everything else is a death check, not a consciousness check.

Sorry, right.  You're only rolling Consciousness if you remain active.  Do Nothing mitigates the every turn rolls.

Lack of sleep here is causing me to conflate some things.

Regardless, we're (Nicole and I) awaiting you're ruling:  Do we go with pg 419 and only roll at teh start of the next turn, or go with Kromm's clarification and Demchug needs to roll now and then again at the start of the next turn?

Re: Deep Dive Rules Questions

I'm going to say immediately. Its the latter of the two statements, and it lines up with injury better.

Before this comes up, I'm clearing this as I've run into disagreements in the past:

Ranged Rapid Strike and Flurry of Blows.  By my reading they combine...

By my reading they do as well. I would not allow it in a non-arena game, but we are playing Rules As Written.
