Re: OOC thread
My D&D group will only rescue maidens fair if they intend to pimp them.  They would be so grateful we rescued them that they would willingly do anything for us.  So pimping them wouldn't be evil.  However, if they maybe know something then they will get tortured.  And that is evil.  We keep having to ask one player what his alignment is.  My Bard had to take Detect Thoughts just so there would be an alternative to torture.

Torture only works if your DM is lazy.

Always have a way to get your information that removes intent from the interpretation.

Re: OOC thread
I think back to the greatest torture method of all. Put them in a chair. Set a cake on the table. Start to eat the cake. When they ask for cake, tell them 'Cake is for talkers'.

Re: OOC thread
But the cake is a lie.  Knowing these players when the prisoner talks, they would just wolf down the cake and leave nothing for the prisoner.  This one guy says he is Lawful Neutral.  But often he acts Evil like with that torture.  And he breaks the law by selling illegal drugs.  I think he's really Neutral Evil, and he gets away with it by writing "Lawful Neutral" on his character sheet.

Re: OOC thread
I once had a group of players convinced I was playing an abnormally violent but still generally good Paladin by telling them he followed a Norse pantheon.  Not until several months later when the game ended did the DM tell them I had been a Black Guard with a ring of non detection all along.

In reply to Nyxi Nackle (msg # 970):

Well the way I think of it is that a neutral character doesn't care either way and doesn't go out of his way if it doesn't assist his aims. That isn't Evil. An Evil character knows it will hurt and secretly (or not so secretly) derives pleasure from that fact alone.

Evil will eat the cake because he knows you want it. Neutral will eat the cake because he's hungry or just wants it. It's different priorities...

I feel like some people interpret neutral that way, and some people interpret it as "as long as the crazy crap is counterbalanced by pretending to be good, or doing things that have good results, then it breaks even."

Re: OOC thread
Also keep in mind that the three kinds of neutral on that axis are the most bound by their law and chaos element, so they should interpret the meaning and needs of neutrality very diffrently.  That still ignores the more complex question of active vs passive TN entirely.

@Westen Lucien's thread is still public. Also Piiraeuvax needs to see what his investigation turned up.

Re: OOC thread
Considering how a couple of really big fires were caused this year by falling power lines... turning off the power on windy days is the only precaution you can take.  What else can they do?  They can't make it rain so that all the brush greens up again.  Luckily, it's nearing the rainy season so there's not long to wait.

They could seed the clouds like China does trying to make it rain!

But yeah, I saw that report and I was like man that sucks. You could install Solar so you're not effected when they do that. There are some good no or low cost solar options out there now.

Re: OOC thread
All very expensive solutions.  Cloud Seeding is expensive and doesn't always succeed.  Burying the power lines is expensive so the power company doesn't want to do that.  Buying solar panels is very expensive since the Federal Government stopped giving subsidies and then smacked a tariff on imported solar panels.

I tell you, the government wastes too much money on things it doesn't need, and then when something comes up that it does need, the money's not there.  And the biggest waste is the military.  The U.S. Air Force has all these planes and all these pilots.  Are any of them trained to do water or fire-retardant foam drops?  No.  The state Air National Guard is.  Are any of these Army or Marine Corp soldiers trained to fight fires?  No.  National Guard troops are.  If the National Guard can be trained to provide fire protection, I saw the federal government can train their soldiers to do the same.

In reply to Vanel Giltlock (msg # 988):

wow, I hadn't realized. I'm really sorry. I'll deal with that now. If it ever takes more than a couple days, make sure you tell me, cause I'm managing something like 10-20 different groups right now, and it's easy to lose track.

On a seperate note everyone, sorry for being afk for the last few days, I've had a lightning round of job interviews, and spent most of my time in town.
