Re: The Halls of Castle Amber...

Ariadne:
Ariadne, perhaps eager to change the subject, looked at Julian inquisitively
"Someone mentioned that you were some kind of Warden in the forests around here?  What does that entail?"

"Amber, as such, is surrounded by sea to the east and north, but is almost entirely forest to the south and west, so if something's not swimming, flying, nor using magic, it practically has to come here through Arden, so I guard that. I have a number of very well-trained men-- and some women-- who do that under my command. Not as well-trained as myself, of course, but hardly anyone is."

Re: The Halls of Castle Amber...

Ariadne raised a subtly raised eyebrow at the last words Julian said. Such arrogance, or at least powerful self confidence, seemed par for the course for most of her new family.
"I'll admit that I'm more of a city girl, but I'd be interested in some training in that area, especially if i might be wandering all over Timbuktu in service of 'King and  Country'. "
She smiled
"My father took me camping a couple of times, perhaps still holding out hope that we'd make it back here one day,  so I'm not a total neophyte, but to be honest, i still kind of consider it 'roughing it in the Great Outdoors' when I'm at a hotel without Room Service "

She turned to nod and smile at Jon as he approached.

"Indeed, it sounds like woodlore training would be quite useful to you. But learning to spend a comfortable night in the forest is of lesser importance... what's vital is learning to recognize when something or someone is moving through it near oneself... and, almost as important, to be able move through it as silently as possible so that others do not realize the same about you... at least, not until you choose to let them do so."

Ariadne:

Julian nods. "Prince Jon..." Julian raises his left eyebrow slightly. "Jon, here, knows a thing or two about moving through forest." This, from Julian, is quite a compliment.

Jon nods "Thank you, Uncle.  I caught the tail end of that and he is correct. Second to that is being able to identify what is around you, plants, animals, etc. This way you know what you can eat or use as a weapon, what normal animals travel the area so that you better determine what is unusual." smiling "I had mentioned to Princess Ballad that I thinking about asking you about training with the Rangers and you, and maybe joining the Arden Rangers. At this point, I consider myself possessing the fundamentals at best."

Jon then moves as to present Jade "Uncle, in case you are not familiar, this is Princess Jade out of Remba." he says with pride.

"I know Prince Julian and have done some art for him. He is a good man." Jade beamed with a smile.

"Prince Jon, I hope we can all focus on our current threat before you join the rangers though. The Graymen are still out there and still a problem."

Julian smiles back, and for once it feels genuine, an unguarded moment of something like actual warmth, instead of I'm smiling because I'm the most amazing person in the room nor I'm smiling because I'm so clever, not I'm smiling because I just thought of the more droll little cutting remark I could say if I felt like it. No, just, What a pleasant young woman this little "Jade" lady is.

Then he goes back to thinking about how amazing he is, but it was a nice moment.

Ariadne grinned at Julian's words, though she nodded in agreement with them.
"I've got some experience with sneaking around.  Just ask my father about my curfew troubles back in school.  Most of my practice was in, well, urban environments, I suppose, but I'd be happy to learn what you have to teach.   It would help with the Grey Jackasses, certainly."

"That can be arranged," Julian smiles.

He seems sincere, but everything he says seems to have an unspoken nyah-hah-hahh! in back of it. Feels like training could be... rigorous.

Re: The Halls of Castle Amber...

Having had experience with trainers and instructors who thought they were God's Gift To The Artform, Ariadne recognized Julian's unspoken threat of "Many,Many, Pushups!!!!"
She still remembered the time that one niave Producer hired Steven Seagal, of all people, to try to teach Ariadne and her costars martial arts.
Ari was still, to this day, legally unable to speak of bow badly that day went for the cocky and arrogant celebrity.

Still, she had already literally fought for her life against a group of the grey scumbags, and it was pretty much guaranteed that she would again sooner rather than later.
So "Bootcamp From Hell" wasn't necessarily a bad idea

Vialle comes up to Jade (led by Random). "Jade? If the musicians will play... I thought perhaps I might sing...?"

The song is chosen, and the musicians start.

Vialle doesn't actually come in for the first few minutes, but when she does, oh wow. It's just wordless vocalizing that's hauntingly, dreamingly beautiful.

Re: The Halls of Castle Amber...

Ariadne srched a skeptical eyebrow at the queen's request.  Not that she doubted that the woman could sing.  It seemed like in Amber even the guys who shoveled horse manure from the cobblestone streets could sing better than half the musicians she'd met on Earth.
It was just a bit odd to have a queen deign to entertain people directly.  Again, perhaps it was wrong to compare similar concepts on each world, but she could barely imagine the British royalty singing at a party they were hosting, and even then the partygoers would just grit their teeth and pretend it was entertaining, because it would be rude to act naturally

Vialle started singing to what was, as always, exquisite music, and Ariadne frowned at first, realizing it wasn't in an understood language.  Or, at least,  understood by her.
She was working on grasping the local dialect,  and was doing very well learning the new skill, as she always had in the past (of course,  now she knew where she got THAT particular talent, didn't she?).  But this was different,  and soon she realized that the wordless singing was the point.

It was...magnificent.   Ariadne had to fight back tears at its beauty,  and actually felt weak in the knees.

Jade smiled with joy.

"Your a siren." Jade said with awe and happiness once the Queen was done singing. She began applauding wanting Vialle to know how wonderful she did and wanting to signal others to do so.

Jon is stunned by the power and beauty of the Queen's voice.  He instinctively reaches for Jade's hand and holds it as he is entranced by the music.  Once the song ends and Jade moves to clap, breaks the spell for Jon and he joins in clapping as well.

"That was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard, your Majesty."

She was full of pride to see that Vialle was a siren and why not she had her voice and could feel the rhythms of the sea.

The king is simply very proud, a little teary.

"...Thank you," Vialle says modestly (but not shyly). She knows she's good, and can take complements. She just isn't full of herself about it, either.

Even Julian is obviously very impressed.
