Ok, questions for the GM about stats and advancement:

What are the bonuses for a 17 or an 18 in a stat?

Do looks cap out at 11, or do they continue beyond that to something like:
12 women start following you
16 men immediately hate you, women start throwing undergarments to get your attention
18 even Ballad can’t resist you!

At 19, it's not even about sexual attraction anymore.   People are just naturally euphoric in your presence

Has anyone noticed somethings just come naturally to their character, a bit of their character coming to life while playing them ?

I will start us out:

Jade seems to love adopting things she just learned, in her speech and conversations.
She loves her mother. (Could have gone either way)
Her fully embracing being a Princess.
Parasol replacing rapier as her weapon of preference.


There are more the character just came alive in this game.

Hmmmmm! I'm not sure my answer is exactly what you were asking for, Jade, but I do think that y'all, GM and players, have provided a place to play that makes Ballad fairly easy to play.

Like, I do feel like she's a part of the world we're playing in, and I think as game-play goes on I just get a stronger sense of her as a character. But that's really just thanks to y'all for responding as if she's a real part of the world, etc. It's easy to have a character come to life when there's good chemistry with the group at large, if that makes sense.

And sure, there are things I 'discover' as I play her, but I can't think of anything specific right now (alas). *g*

For me, I think, it has helped me figure our Jon's background more, where he came from and how he feels about somethings.

Jon is definitely more of a solider than I thought originally.
Jon is very happy to have this family, so he is trying to embrace it.
I think Jon is much more relaxed in Amber than ever at home.

Lance, making himself feel  out of place and awkward around everyone!!  Lol, crap!  It’s me at 18!!

I was wondering Lance, about that.
It seemed to come out of nowhere but it also felt very real.

I'm definitely connecting with Ariadne on a personal level, though she's evolving in different ways than I had imagined at first.
I'm definitely connecting with the "real person smirking at the weird Magic Kingdom" aspect of her character, and the part of her that's "arrogant big shot who is physically struck with how small.sue really is " is certainly blossoming

Ok, so how do HP work when we hit that level up mark?  If we go to a point where we would say, add a +1 bonus to our CON, does it affect retro HP as well?

Also, how Jon is evolving, to answer Jade.
He is coming to terms with his legacy and birthright.  Something that he didn't believe in.
He definitely see similarities to his home, but finds it refreshing to have some many people who are honest and direct w/o hidden agendas.
Having a big family is nice.  Too different degrees, he can relate to each of them and enjoys those connections.

I thought of that as well. LOL

Obvs I am not the GM but I imagine that if, say, Joe the Cousin got another +1 in HP and his HP at the time was a healthy 18 out of 18, Joe's new HP would be 19 out of 19. But if Joe was sporting a still-wounded 16/18, and you bought another HP pool thingy so it was 19, you'd still be 16/19 until you healed. You'd just get to heal to 19. That's what makes sense to me! Though the GM may have a different take.

As I am close to gaining a level thanks to the GM's XP.
I have a question for people. I plan on raising Charisma or Intelligence as she has been doing a fair amount of socializing, singing and interacting. Also she has been doing research a lot as well, and nerdy book stuff.

What way do you think I should go, when I gain the level.

Charisma works, as you're definitely coming out of your shell

I dunno if this is helpful, Jade, but I like playing the game of 'what should I get'! Here are arguments for them all!

Strength or Agility - because she learned from/is determined to learn from training w/ Jon and Ariadne and has had a fair bit of suddenly thrown-into-the-pool-of-physical-drama what with the gray men and practicing

Willpower - no opinion! Does one roll willpower for magic? Jade does seem to have found new goals to follow, new strength of purpose perhaps

Intelligence - something Jade seems to use actively a lot, with there being quite a bit to learn in this suddenly new life. Gets a work out!

Charisma - this seems more passive, but a fair bit of socializing

Constitution - this seems passive too, but occasion to heal from some wounds!

edited to add Perception (which I, uh, perceptively noticed I forgot):

Perception - no strong opinion! Dunno if Jade's used or not used it. Paranoia now that one knows assassins are one's tail could be justification to heighten it? But no opinion! Seems passive. Unless it's used for scanning to see if things are magic, in which case, bit of flex going on there

(I have no strong feelings about what I'ma do with Ballad's stats when she levels up. Maybe more to Intelligence, 'coz I think she's had some spectacular successful rolls / possible failures with that stat. Maybe Perception, because assassins. Maybe something else! Opinions are welcome!)

I think intelligence fits for Ballad, she hasn't shied away from research, and she actively tries to learn about her cousins. Also for those conversations she has had about the Grey men.

Perception as you said could be useful, though we all haven't been using that too much. Ariadne has used perception and been amazing when she did.

Oh about your question, yes Willpower is the stat for magic.

I can see more dex for Ari.

And :nodsnods: I think learning about the cousins doesn't fall under intelligence so much - that's just friendliness/Ballad being a people-person/extrovert. But she does seem to come across a lot of information somehow/always be on the darned hunt for it.

Perception is also what one uses to shadow walk!

Your our premier shadow walker so maybe Perception would be good.

I had Jade more perceptive then intelligent. Fiona is the brainy one and I didn't want to be a Fiona clone. Strong will though, that Jade does have.

Her being a clutz with training (And she really was) fit concept too. She will get better but I think not just yet.

What is used for combat ? Dex and Strength ?

Lance - Toss up between when Jade had that private talk with him about Ballad and his reaction when she changed to look like his mom. He went straight to talking about how was he going to deal with people who could look different.

Jon - I think when they first met was the most memorable. Noticing they had the same colors and making a connection.

Florimel - Is it Romance you seek ?  (I loved that line)

Fiona - I loved the talk with her and just the emotional reuniting ! Was very into that scene.

Odile - I just love whenever she is in a scene. Odile's sweet nature makes her stand out.

Ariadne:

Ari’s dubious skepticism in the face of New Information about Amber is a delight to read. There’ve been some really good lines. Maybe I'll hunt for them later. There was one about Disneyland-like wonder and trying to hide it. There've been a lot! And I think Ari’s response to Heightened Emotional State where she was sobbing over her heirloom ax was a darned memorable moment, too.

Jade:

Let’s see let’s see. Obvs, checking the ax for magic and blowing up that scene: memorable. But I’ve also really appreciated: Jade telling Lance off post-carriage ride and post-letter misdelivery — some great roleplay to read! Sounds from her telling of it that the end of her quarrel with the grey men was pretty memorable—her stumbling out of an alley, helped by the citizenry. :) Also the meat loaf song -- I mean, dang, you rhymed and everything.

Jon:

Premium memorable Jon-moment for me was when he innocently offered Ballad 'second in command,' for when everybody goes out to the field. That whole ride was pretty good. But I'd also thrown on here: his attempts to cheer up Lance in the hallway post-ax, specifically his description of Lance, very memorable. Also his sort of creative problem-solving when it came to making practice weapons, a nice bit of IC potential for leadership there.

Lance:

Oh boy, so many! He definitely makes a splash. But I'll say the top two 'holy heck, memorable' Lance moments so far have been ax-emotional-state induced confession of love and when he threw the bar down on the door of Bloody Mary's in an angrydrunk rage. Honorable mention to his general wonder as he explored Amber City for the first time and for some of his broody thoughts about Jon, which are always entertaining to read.

Him throwing that bar down WAS an amazing moment ! Cheers Lance.

Shoutouts to GM-moments and/or NPCs:

The dessert in the scene where Vialle-Lance-Ballad had dinner. I want that dessert. The side effect of Jade not-quite-fully-succeeding on that check-ax-for-magic roll. The cool stuff you came up with for a dream. Angsley also sounds awesome. The Colonel's surprising appearance!

Random: I think our current scene is excellent. The Young Lady stuff is particularly fine. But I also liked his answer to ‘third keenest desire’ and his description of Julian as a boy was really great. …Is Random my favourite NPC? Geez. He might be!

Vialle: Vialle’s description of Rinaldo was so good. The kind way she answered questions and dealt with the idea of the play also sticks in my mind.

Julian: In general, a memorable Julian! I really liked his entrance ... and also the lil' undercurrents when he and Ballad parted! And the pun!!! But also Random’s description of him as a boy, so good. :grin: All around, memorable.

Trent: Generally delights me. I like what a quiet non-adventure hobbit-y type he seems. But this line in particular: "I know nothing of the former identity of the skull, and I have no desire to know, thank you, m'lady."

And since I dinged a couple of NPC-descriptions-of-other-characters here, I'm going to shoutout Ariadne's description of Gérard. I loved it.

As a group: Pretty much every time all 5 of us are together.

Well, if we are talking MLP:FIM, then I think the second Movie introduced the Sea Ponies, which have the ability to live on land and the sea.
It was a plot point for one of the students at Twilight Sparkles Friendship School.

But beyond that clarification, I agree with both the Pony types and the marks.
Jade A Star - Intelligence, and a ability to use magic.

Very nice! The temptation to draw characters as MLP is strong. :P Ballad would love that mark, although I think at present it’s pretty aspirational. :grin:

That said, I kinda envision shield and crown swapped for Lance and Jon. What I’ve seen of Jon so far strikes me as far more about guardianship and protection (maybe ‘stewardship’) than leadership and Lance’s current theme seems to be Coming Into His Own Power/Rising To His Own Nobility. My alternate mark suggestions:

Lance — a heart with wings
Jon — a shield with two hearts
Jade — a faceted jewel w/ three musical notes; possibly a seashell w/ musical notes
Ariadne — maybe an axe with a crown over it? I'm hesitant. Maybe crossed lightning bolts w/ a wheel?
Ballad — maybe dice?

That artwork would be fun to see.

Jade - Triton Bard

Ariadne:  half elf fighter

I don't actually play D&D / never really have so I'm not totally sure. Suggestions welcome? Maybe a multiclass bard and rogue? Is that a thing? Maybe an elf? They're shiny, right? No strong feelings!

Bards tend to be rougey too.
Ballad is flashy but also approachable and seems to be able to blend with others.
Half-elves are the best at that and Bard fits just need to chose rouge skills and you would be all set !

Recommendation for Ballad - Rogue / Swashbuckler with a multi-class into bard for the Bardic inspiration (D&D 5E)

Jon - Human Ranger

Oh I had forgot about swash bucklers !  Yes that would fit Ballad well.


I knew Jon would be Ranger.

A guess that Lance might be a Human Paladin.

I'll agree with Ranger for Jon and Paladin for Lance.


Fighter feels a bit generic but nothing else seems to fit

Barbarian ?

Ariadne if you look at D&D 5E there are some nice builds, Like Battle Mater.

Also in D&D 4th Edition, there was the Warden Class, which would work nicely for how I picture Ari.

Battle Masters were a favorite of mine for a while.
A great support, rallying fighter.

Barbarians dont need armor in D&D well oiled muscles can bounce arrows, swords and cannon balls. Wait no cannon balls.

Cannon Balls, that depends on the setting and time.

Barbarians prefer light and medium leather / hide armors.
So that does fit :)

Me too, another doctor told her something completely wrong and that needs to be resolved. They told her she didn't need to take her regular medicine anymore. Her regular medicine had nothing to do with the surgery.

  Meanwhile back at home, I'm struggling with trying to smoke a brisket.  Never used a smoker before, and never cooked a huge brisket either (corned beef doesn't count!).  Smoker seems to be hanging at only about 150 degrees.  Thinking it should be 200 anyway, right?

Smoking is usually 150 - 250.  I checked and a couple places say ideal brisket temp is 195.

11 hours of smoking and the brisket came out nice, especially for a first attempt!
Hope all is well with everyone!  Starting my first 10-hr shift out of 11 in a row!  Woo!!  Based on that, most of Lance’s posts will be between 7pm-10am, then sleeping through the daytime hours!

Glad the brisket was good!  When you see this, good luck and stay safe!

Got a text (trump call) from my sister telling me that our cousin died on Saturday with AIDS, drug, and alcohol problems.  As the (actually)adopted black sheep of the family, never would have been told by anyone else.  Then she tells me that one of my uncles and one of my aunts (who BOTH made my life a living hell by Monday morning quarterbacking me during the years I cared for my father with dementia) now are both dementia patients themselves.  Oh, and my sister just celebrated 4 years sober in AA, which she never told me about until last night!!

Ha!

This after weeks of work turmoil and getting screwed over there six ways from Sunday!!

Watch, next my wife will tell me to go water some flowers!

A player in a game o' mine gave me that rulebook for the holidays, actually. :chuckle: I've heard of it before but haven't really poked into it. The important question is will there be NPCs with glittery beards?

I agree, Jade and Ari are a study in opposites on many layers of their character.

It throws Jon on off because he doesn't want to accidentally offend Ari.
So it is fun, trying to explain his mindset, that is more subconscious / automatic thing vs. an intentional one.
Thus it makes for some odd posts.  But I like it :)  RP!!!

Dex I would think but an argument for Str could be made.

Thrown weapons are one of those weird things that use both

Throwing seems like precision to me, which would be dex. I think.

The rules as currently written suggest that it would use Dex.

Buuuut the badger has a jewelled collar, and is the pet of a Very Important Lord of Amber, and the symbol of their House. Jon is challenged to a duel.

Some ideas:

You knock over a rack of weapons
You hit our Carriage
Even though Ariadne and Jade moved away you hit one of us (Jade would volunteer) I bet it would make Jon feel bad.
The weapon hits a random commoner.
Two people are carrying a large beautiful painting and the ax goes through it.

Also, you throw the axe onto your own foot. You hit your own face with the axe when you draw your arm back for the throw. You accidentally throw it directly above you, it hits your head as it comes back down, you are briefly knocked out.

You're focusing so hard on throwing it you don't let go of the handle and overbalance yourself, faceplanting in the dirt...

Never let Ballad pick your failures she is really good at it.

I still say Ariadne should get a Bat Utility Belt to wear on her Pattern Walk
