Thank you GM!

Also I completed the Corwin saga and started the Merlin Saga.

So far, very interesting.

In reply to Jon (msg # 7):

Yes, the Amber prequels are interesting,  but probably not worth the read

Thanks!

So far not a fan of Merlin.

I do like Fiona so far. She is one of the stand outs in the Merlin saga.

I corrected it, I am NOT a fan of Merlin.

He has done nothing of value IMHO to warrant the lead of the series.
I am far more interested in Rinaldo.

So far Fiona has been my favorite character in the Merlin series.

I haven't made it to Merlin's Saga yet. My husband isn't a fan of Merlin's Saga at all.

I haven't met anyone who is a Merlin fan but plenty of Rinaldo, Jasra, Julia, Mandor, Fiona, Florimel just about everyone but Merlin in the Merlin saga.

My husband pretty much refuses to reread the Merlin saga. Says he read them as they came out and that's all he needed. He has reread them once, but that was because of a game he was rp in. The games he tends to play, or run, are Corwin saga timelines. In fact, in his current game, Oberon has only been out of Amber for a year.

I can see why he would do that.
I don't think I will be re-reading the Merlin Saga once I finish it.

And a bit credit to the GM here, I came into the game with 0 knowledge of Amber and he helped me fit into this world.
Then the Players around him also help keep me on course, it has been a very welcoming game.

I am always happy to find people who have not read the Amber novels but are willing to try a game. It is nice to introduce them to the world and elders etc.

It is a shame that we don't get to see more of each elder but the one good thing the Merlin saga does is it let's us see the Princesses more.

I'm with your husband, Janessa. Have reread scenes from the Merlin chronicles when I need the reference or to doublecheck context for a game I'm in that uses them as backstory where my character would maybe have that context, but whenever I've run my own Amber game I always throw out everything from said chronicles (except the existence of Rinaldo and soooometimes Mandor), 'cause I just don't like the tone.

If I'm being honest, I think Zelazny sucks at writing women... and he's not too great at being consistent. He does all right with Vialle and Fiona, but Llewella, Jasra, Julia, Dara, don't even get me started on Coral and Nayda but especially Coral... Who could've been cool, but yeesh.

I agree with Ballad, that Zelazny was terrible at writing women.
To me they didn't even get the depth of the other male characters did.
Here was a lot of great potential there and it was left unutilized.

I much prefer the GMs take so far on all of the Elders.  I love his Vialle!

I think it is the age that Zelazny wrote in.

This was mostly pulp with characters like Conan carrying naked or nearly naked women around. Two fisted male heroes with the female characters not given much depth. It was a sad message of those times but you find it in a lot of art as well.

I don't disagree that it was a work of the times.  It just makes is less fulfilling in the current age.
Since I am reading them now, I don't have the nostalgia around them of someone who read them even 10 years ago.

Do get me wrong, I am not hating on the books or the writer per se.  It just that there was so much potential, potential that HE seeded the Princesses' with and many of the female characters with that he just didn't make use of.

Which is different than a lot of the books of that time.

The Princesses get a wee bit more face time in the Merlin saga because they are not overshadowed by someone like Corwin. Alas Ballad is right about Coral and some others.

I liked Julia

I don't want to reveal more since your reading now but I am sure you will find favorite characters in it. It's not bad, but Merlin is not the best protagonist.

Indeed, to paraphrase another franchise, Merlin is definite not a great protagonist "like his father before him".

I do plan on reading Merlin's stories once I get done with Corwin's. Meanwhile, I just pick my husband's brain. Drives him nuts since he doesn't know if I'm needing the knowledge for the game he runs or one of the other Amber games I am in.

I find it entertaining! I play four Amber games on here, including this one, and two on Discord. Two of my other games have since gone dead. I've been the daughter of Delwin, Sand, Random, Caine, Bleys, Oberon, Fiona, and Finndo. I also have a character that is the son of Benedict and one that is the son of Mirelle. There have also been characters that were nieces to Oberon. In those games, Oberon had an older brother who was my character's father. So they were full on Chaos....

This is my first Amber Game :)

Perhaps someday I'll try and find another Amber game when I have time.

Personally,  i have trouble playing in more than one Amber game, because of how mentally intense and immersive they can be, unless my characters are incredibly different
