Episode Three - Baggage

The horde was coming again.

The remnants of the original detachment huddled in the meager defenses of the ranch buildings.  The place had been built to hold out against restless natives.  But not this restless.  And not this many.  They been chased all the way from the damned, black ruin.  Harassed and attacked across the wastes.

How had the Anouk’s disabled the comms?  Cut off.

Took refuge in the abandoned buildings of old Rourke ranch.  A place to defend.  A place to make a stand, the lieutenant had said.  A last stand, maybe.  But they had driven off the first assault.  A bloody, desperate carnage.  How could those damn aliens keep coming after being hit?  Bullets just bounced off the armor of those lizard-things they ride.  Thank God for the sykers and the Cy-SOGs.

Still lost too many…  Too many…  But the anouks had lost more and pulled away.  The beleaguered defenders had hoped it was for good.  But they knew it was a lie.  The natives were riled and angry.  It was no surprise when they heard the war cries of the native warriors and the shrieking roars of the chanouk lizards.  The raging cacophony was carried to the tired, hopeless defenders on the ceaseless winds of the alien world.

The defenders checked their mags.  Again.  Not enough.  They’d fight anyway.  Maybe they could do it…  Maybe…

One corner of the ranch wall disappeared in a violent explosion, scattering troopers and chunks of concrete around the yard.  Some of the sykers screamed and grabbed their bald heads in horror and pain…

They were coming.  It was coming.

Welcome to Banshee!

Or, for Dean, welcome back!

Dream logic is at play here.  Other than Dean, the rest of you were never here.  But somehow, you are and it makes sense.  Of course you were.  Kelly had always been a Colonial Ranger.  Fletcher's always been a CSA technical specialist, volunteered to join the Exfor for the greatest adventure.  Harry's always been a cyborg soldier sent to bolster the UN Forces.  Dean has always had this strange black tannis-stone medallion found in the dark, shadowy ruins of an ancient alien city...

Using Quick Encounter Rules.  All rolls are at -4 to represent the desperate situation.  Choose your skill, make your roll, write your post befitting the results.  Success is a level of Fatigue.  A Raise is unscathed.  Failure is a Wound.  Critical Failure is d4 Wounds.

Episode Three - Baggage

The world quickly started to turn upside down with that breach in the wall.  Anouk riders on a the huge lizard-like chanouks rampaged into the breach.  One of the beasts reared and laid into an infantryman with huge scything claws, tearing through the armored battlesuit like a candy wrapper.  The rider cocked a tannis-tipped spear and threw the primitive weapon at another trooper.  The stone-tip seemed to glow or hum or both...  It had no right to tear through modern, hi-tech polymer armor.

But it did.

The spear punched through the grunt and pinned him to a concrete wall...

More were coming, screaming out of the hazy dusklight...

Still your go!  Just trying to inspire!

Episode Three - Baggage

The radios had been down ever since they had engaged in a strategic repositioning from the old anouk ruin.  He'd heard plenty of the others blaming it on the "grapes", but Fletcher knew damn well how good, or bad, the atmosphere on Banshee could be when it came to boosting or playing havoc with radio waves.

Of course that hadn't mattered as much since the field pack comm had gotten holed clean from one side to the other.  Fletcher had been working on getting it up and running ever since they got to the ranch.  He'd managed to pull the bits that composed the inertial GPS out, and rig them to run independent of the rest, but that still left making it work with the handheld communicator that was usually only good for a mile or two at best.

When the BOOM! of the wall caving in had reverberated through ought the ramshackle compound, Fletcher knew he was out of time to do things properly.  He grabbed the big battery from the field unit along with the rest of his stuff and sprinted out the backdoor.

There was an old windpump back there that looked like it belonged somewhere in Kansas instead of a homestead on some alien rock, but it was big, it was metal, and it was located with a few buildings between it and the hole in the wall.  All of those seemed like good things to a desperate man like Fletcher.

Sliding to a stop he began stripping lengths of wire and winding it around the metal of the derrick shaped base.  He quickly wired those into the antenna on the handheld unit and held down the talk button.

"All stations, All stations!  This is Whisky, Alpha, Foxtrot four.  Does anybody read me?  Radio Check, Over!"

Fletcher waited a few moments.  Somewhere there was a very human scream as a man died but most of him ignored it at the moment.

"All stations, All stations!  This is Whisky!  Alpha!  Foxtrot!  Four!  Radio Check!  Over!"  He hollered.

With no reply Fletcher grabbed the big battery and began wiring it in to try and give the unit more juice to send up the improvised antenna.

Harry scowled. This day was just getting worse and worse. He could shoot the thing, but artillery hadn't done jack to them so far. The best chance the others had was if they got a little breathing room.

What the hell. It wasn't like they could kill him a second time. He pumped some Spook Juice on to the blade of his chainsaw-arm, revved it, and sparked it. Flame on, he hustled over to the trooper who'd just been impaled and tore the tannis-spear out of the wall. Internally, he winced as the dead trooper flopped down, but he kept the wince off his face. Instead, he put on the most fearsome grimace he could muster.

Then he charged, screaming his fool head off, at the chanouks and riders, waving his flaming arm and the bloody spear, daring them to come after him. A great big screaming, flaming, bloody distraction in a can, charging out of Hell's Heart at the natives.

Episode Three - Baggage

Ranger MacLeod checked her shotgun.  Empty.  Her web gear likewise empty.  Useless.  She dropped it there with a dead metallic thud, it was dead weight.  But she'd been lucky, the shotgun seemed to actually hurt those things.  A little.  Sometimes.

Before they'd gone Over There, there'd been a lot of ballyhoo and mockery of sending a CQB specialist into "Outer Space".  Now the Ranger wondered what those in charge had known that they hadn't told everyone else.

Her sidearm was long gone, she'd picked up some submachinegun three passageways ago.  It was on its last, mostly full, magazine, but that was only good for a burst or two.

The Ranger struggled for something to say, an order to bark, an inspirational saying, and she found nothing.  That's when the cyborg unit activated and went nuts.  It was here.  Crossing herself, the Ranger activated her laser cutter and flung herself not quite into the fray, rather staying in the cybernetic unit's six and opportunistically cutting down any target that attempted to get past its weapon systems or swarm the unit.

She was not nearly as impressive looking or as loud, but it was classic military tactics in small scale.  Infantry supports tanks in urban combat.  She was the infantry, the cyborg was the tank, and the urban was a colony in space.  It all made perfect sense.

Forgot. thanks Harry lol

Episode Three - Baggage

The rifle banged against his back as he ran.  His shoulder hurt something fierce, his opposite hand clamped over the wound as his legs pumped.  He'd been far the safety of his own lines, his unit scouting out the enemy.  Things had gone horribly wrong.  Radios were out and he'd been ordered to report back, to warn their main forces.  Dean had tried to make it back first...he had failed apparently.

Jumping over the sandbags and into the rough cover it provided, he looked around furiously to see who was where.  Scrambling over to a dead soldier, he quickly stripped the body of magazines for his rifle; he'd run out hours ago.  Some might view it as cold, heartless.  But this was FarAway.  Here, it wasn't cold or harsh.  It was just another day in hell.

Reloading, he threw himself back to the barricade.  Ignoring the pain, he shouldered the weapon and drew a bead on first target he spotted.  Back to work...

Episode Three - Baggage

The charge of the massive cyborg blunts the charge of the anouks through the breach.  The native warriors backpedal away for a moment. Save for the chanouk and its rider.  The chanouk rears and hisses, but the rider kept it steady.  Rider and beast, at least equal in size to the war machine, opted to pick on someone their own size.  Inspired, the rest of the warriors began to circle back in...

SSSSZZZZRRRRAP

The laser cutter tore through the first anouk with a terrible ease, leaving the warrior to fall into pieces as the Ranger moved on through.  More would meet similar terrible fates under the cruel effectiveness of the land clearing tool.  The Ranger and the cyborg were holding the line, giving the rest of the force a chance to pull back together...

Troopers began to step up, ducking into what cover was available or just standing tall in the open.  It didn't seem to matter anymore.  A thunderous chatter of unified fire began to ripple into the ranks of the natives.  Dean, from his new position, began to cut down targets of opportunity.  Careful.  Precise.  One.  Bang.  At.  Bang.  A.  Bang.  Time.

For a moment, it seemed like they might be able to pull this off...   A miracle, gritty, underdog defense that stems the tide against the overwhelming horde...  History books are full of them.

History books are also full of the ones that didn't go well.  The last stands.  The heroic martyrs.

Fletcher was still trying to wire in more power when the first strange blasts slammed into the windmill-turned-radio tower.  Sheared metal screamed as the tower began to twist and fall.  It ripped the wires from his hands and forced him to dive roughly away and cover.  A chunk of tower strut still fell across his legs despite the effort...

Then the sykers suddenly stopped screaming and stood again.  Suddenly gouts of fire and sykokinetic energy began to tear into the ranks of the ExFor troopers from the bald heads of their very own sykers.  Other troops began to suddenly switch sides, turning their guns on their fellow troops.  The anouks whooped and began to flood back in in the chaos.  The cyborg and the Ranger tried to hold it back...but too many...  No retreat...  Glowing spears of tannis and the claws of the huge chanouk lizards began to do their bloody work...

Dean knew his position was getting overwhelmed.  But he kept firing kept looking for targets.  His rifle swung on something new coming across the grassland beyond the wall.  A floating figure, surrounded by a pulsing field of energy.  It glided closer and closer.  An anouk....  but twisted...  emaciated and cadverous....  A skinny.  Dean knew what it was.  He knew it was over.  Its eyes burned with a black fire that began to swallow up everything around Dean.  Till all that was left was the eyes. The horrific, hateful, depthless eyes.

"GANKANAAR!"  The voice echoed through ever fiber of Dean's being.

Dean awoke suddenly, the voice still echoing through his mind.  The pain, the very real pain in his shoulder helped snap him into wakeful reality.  He was on his cot in the camper shelter the Lockesburgers had cobbled together onto the flatbed.

Fletcher was on the other cot and was also waking up...  And also in some pretty awful pain.  His legs hurt, like something hit him, really hard.  Or fell on him...  That windmill....  The radio...  The anouks attacking....  AnouksWhat the hell are anouks?

Harry had fallen asleep in the driver's seat.  He didn't always sleep...and it wasn't always his choice.  Up till now, if there were any dreams at all they were spun from the wicked imagination of his demon hitchhiker.  The AI had mostly taken care of that...  Till now...  Some kinda weird alien battle dream was definitely a new one...

Kelly had the sleeper cab to herself this time and woke up as suddenly as the others from the /weirdest/ dream....

The Black Dog was still parked in the parking lot-turned marketplace that Turk's convoy had set up in Near Dallas.  It had been a week or so since the battle.  After patching up the truck, and each other, the Lockesburg folk had gratefully set the crew up as best they could.  Adding a modified, patched up trailer camper to the flat bed to give more living space.  A few crates and pallets of farm goods suitable for trading or eating.

Hammer down, they drove the Dog down the broken highways and by ways from Lockesburg under Prudence's guidance.  They had caught up to the convoy on the last day of its stop in Near Dallas.  Tomorrow they were rolling out.  A chance for a good night's sleep in the relative safety of the convoy and the settlement....

No rest for the wicked...

WAKEY WAKEY!

Harry and Kelly - You guys are Fatigued one level.  Lack of restful sleep, distractions...horrible little flashbacks...  Hella headaches...  Harrowed are immune to fatigue from natural sources, but this ain't natural.

Dean and Fletcher - You guys wake up with a Wound.  Matching the dream.  BUT THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE.  Or is it?

You do all remember the dream in about as much detail as you might expect.

Kelly nearly banged her head on the roof of the sleeper after sitting up so violently.  Thankfully her lack of height saved her.

She felt like crap and didn't understand why for a moment.  Then it started to come back.  She reflexively looked over at the sword.  She slept with it, because of course she did.

Kelly shook her head, wiped her face with her hand.  Tried to make sense of it.  She began the process of sliding out of the cab, she needed some air.

"FUCK!," he sat up with a sudden jerking motion, hand slapping over his clearly bleeding shoulder.  That had sucked A LOT, both from a gunshot wound he couldn't have gotten (bloody evidence to the contrary) to just being back there and reliving that hell.  "Ok...ow.   What the hell was that?," he half said, half muttered.  "Also, gonna need a hand bandaging this..."

Episode Three - Baggage

Fletcher had been dead asleep.  Locked in a nightmare, but deep in sleep none the less.  Dean's scream startled him awake and his instinct sent him jumping off his cot onto his feet before his brain had time to register what had awoken him and what sort of threat it might be getting ready to react to.

A moment later the rest of reality caught up with him and he collapsed to the floor in a heap, both hands clutching his left leg which had mysteriously refused to support him a moment longer.

He gritted his teeth against the pain as his mind struggled to put together a logical picture of what exactly was causing this particular scenario.  Though that seemed to be taking longer than it normally would have.

While part of him fought mightily to make sense of reality, another part was content to just lie on the floor for a while longer while that problem was getting worked out, so that's what he did.

Episode Three - Baggage

Boot in progress...

Harry groaned as he came awake. He never particularly liked waking up...it meant he had slept. After he'd died, waking up was usually a bad sign -- it meant the demon inside him had gotten out to play, more often than not, and he'd be waking up in to some damn trouble or another. Once he'd been canned and the Chip was regulating his demon, that was less of a concern -- sleep was dark and empty, rather than filled with nightmares trying to break his will. It was only a minor improvement, and ever since he'd been woken back to himself after going on autopilot he'd done his best to avoid the need.

This time had been...strange. He'd dreamed, which was unusual in itself. And unlike the visions his demon sent him to try and break him, the images he recalled weren't quite personalized. And he ached. He was dead and canned -- his nerves just didn't respond the same way to sleeping funny anymore.

He looked around the cab at the others, who also seemed groggy and out of sorts. Kelly was heading out of the cab, and Dean was...bleeding?

"Shit." He muttered.

Kelly got to take in one breath before hearing someone curse from inside the camper.  Well, she couldn't exactly make the word out, but it was the cadence and volume and pitch that informed her.  Still groggy, she shambled over.

I assume the camper is built into the side of the trailer near the cab and we have one of those trailers with the smaller front door on one side.  I know they exist I've seen them!  It's either that or we'd have to navigate past any cargo in the back to enter the camper.

Hoisting herself up despite feeling like crap she banged (but not too hard) on the door.

"Hey, anyone alive in there?"

It was only half facetious...

Crowboy was on his way to the camper from his watch position at the tail with Prudence.  Looks like he heard the yelling too.  He looked none the worse for wear, other than being on the tail end of tired from night watch.

Upon seeing Kelly so groggy and out-of-doors, he immediately got concerned, " /You/ alright... Sir? Ma'am?  Ma'am-sir...". He still didn't know the best way to address her respectfully, but he tried.  No matter what she said.

Fletcher managed to pull himself together a bit when the banging on the door grabbed his attention away from dwelling on his own state for the moment.

He managed to pull himself to his feet and limp to the camper's door.  He didn't remember it being locked but his recollections weren't particularly trustworthy at the moment, so who knows.

Fletcher got it open and sagged against the doorway after doing so.  "Still 'live, for certain.  Not maybe by much though."  He informed Kelly, adding a pained grin at his little (poor) attempt at humor.

Kelly could not be fooled, well, okay she could be fooled but not by this.  She'd spent too many years in Thockmorton's medical tents handing her parents sutures and gauze and all kinds of exotic implements, and then too many more splinting broken slaves' limbs with pieces of trash and scraps just to watch them die of infection anyway.

"Ah crud.  Crowboy, circle around, I think Harry was in the cab.  Not much bothers him but make sure he's... uh... himself.  And check everyone else too let's make sure everyone's here for starters."

She then turned to Fletcher.  "As for you, drop trou, there's something horrible in your pants and I need to see it to know whether it needs ointment, stitches or amputation."

Kelly could be funny too.  She also was not very good at it.

Fletcher nodded at Kelly, and scrabbled the few steps back to take a seat on his cot as best he could while avoiding putting weight on his leg.

He considered just cutting his pantleg as he hadn't actually had the time to inspect whatever damage he seemed to have mysteriously incurred and the potential issue of trying to remove them without causing himself more duress loomed large in his mind as a potential priority.

A moment later the consideration of the work it would take to find another pair or stitch up the current set won out and he got started gingerly removing them as best he could so Kelly could do whatever she needed to do.

Harry arrived at the cab, and listened in on Dean's explanation. He nodded. "Faraway. So that was where that was." He scowled. "I don't know all that much about Faraway, to be honest. It was a big news item for a while when I was coming up -- something about a war with natives. But I didn't pay all that much attention to it when I was alive, and even less attention after I died. You're the resident expert here, Dean...what was all that? What's a 'skinny?'" He looked around the parking lot-marketplace. "Because I dreamed, too. About a war with purple aliens riding big beasts. And I don't dream. Not since they installed the Chip in me that keeps my demon friend hogtied. But just now, I dreamed. And it sounds like you did, too. Of the same thing." "Was havin' a nightmare, that's for sure.  Can't remember whole lot of it.  Was fightin' something maybe?"  He recalled.

"Either way I remember bein' in pain right before I woke up, or maybe as I was wakin' up?  Dreams are funny like that sometimes, whatever's happenin' 'round you sometimes gets all mixed in ta what you remember."

Looking over at Dean Fletcher added.  "I don't remember hearin' a gunshot though.  Just heard Dean shoutin'."

Episode Three - Baggage

"Yeah."  Kelly agreed with Harry but didn't really elaborate, she didn't feel the need to.  She was still processing it.  She'd been very, very young when the world ended and just barely remembered the World That Was, it was like a pleasant, golden dream she couldn't properly remember because she was so young.  That was before Thockmorton, before being loaded into trucks and taken from one hospital tent to another, before the horrible sight of the officer executing both of her parents...

She shook her head, no point in reliving that for the 1,847,651st time, it never changed.  The point was Kelly had lived a hard existence for the parts of her life she could actually remember.  And even that hadn't prepared her for the hell she relived in that vision, it was a different kind of hell outside her experience.

"I think we all got it... Crowboy, get something clean and clamp down on Dean's shoulder there.  Just put pressure on the wound, I'll get to it next.  You might as well learn."

Kelly's "medical" skills were mostly self taught despite her parentage, she'd been too young to really understand what it was they were doing in a lot of cases, but the hygiene, handling and basic practices had sort of leaked into her skill set.  Still, her approach to "medicine" was improvised and done without proper tools, supplies or facilities and her bedside manner would horrify any proper doctor.  But, as Kelly had experienced so many times, she was often all there was to be had.

It fit in well with her Templar training though.  The ability to heal miraculously was precious and should be used as the last resort, Connor had always stressed.  It wasn't until Kelly saw someone die in the tents outside Denver who probably could have been helped by the magic, who she couldn't help out of sheer exhaustion of said ability, that she understood that lesson properly.

However she was not optimistic here, she was not quite right herself and she was trying to help someone else.

lol so let's try mundane healing first, though I don't like the odds between the Fatigue penalty and the wound penalty (of the patient, not Kelly).

I have no idea how this affects our Supply either.

07:53, Today: Kelly MacLeod rolled 5,1 using d6-2,d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of (6+1)7,3.  Healing.

Fortunately, once she got it cleaned, it wasn't as bad as it looked initially.  There actually wasn't a lot to be done for something like this, but the good news was it would heal up pretty well on its own if Fletcher didn't aggravate it.  She debated, but ultimately opted for a small suture, asking Harry to provide his non-saw appendage for something for Fletcher to both brace himself on and grab very tightly as she sewed on him.

"All right switch off Crowboy.  Go refill that bowl with some of the boiled water while I look at what we're dealing with here and get rid of this stuff with Fletcher's blood in it.  Fletch, put on some pants.  Oh and favor the other leg for a while.  Give the stitches a couple of days, I'll cut it out when you're ready."

Kelly leaned over Dean's shoulder.

"Criminy.  That really does look like a bullet wound, but... it also kind of doesn't.  That's weird dude."

08:04, Today: Kelly MacLeod rolled 3,1 using d6-2,d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 5,3.  Healing AGAIN.

WHAMP WHAMP

Kelly took the time to clean it mostly to show Crowboy how.  "Don't poke the patient too much it hurts, but if they get too uppity you might have to apply the sedative."  She balled up her fist.  "But that just creates more work for you it's sort of self defeating.  Ugh that's a nasty one, that went in deep for a through and through.  Dammit Dean how'd you manage to get a wound like that?  Never mind.  All right there's not much you can do for something like this with your own hands."

She gave Crowboy a look like a strict nun, folded her hands over the wound, and prayed.

"You restored me to health and let me live. Surely it was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish. In your love you kept me from the pit of destruction; you have put all my sins behind your back.

It had a double meaning of course, well, a triple meaning because it was a dig at Crowboy too.

3 Power Points spent...

08:11, Today: Kelly MacLeod rolled 2,4 using d8-1,d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of 3,5.  Faith.

And there we go, magicallyed away.

"Amen."  And almost irreverently, she snapped at Crowboy again.  "Pop quiz, why do we lay on hands last and not first!?"

Episode Three - Baggage

"Skinny was the slang term form Anouks most of the soldiers used.  The natives on Faraway.  Each was an unbelievably powerful psyker."  He frowned.  "And there were a bunch of human working with them.  Some called them colonists gone rogue or native.  Some believed to be mind controlled by the aliens," he added with a shrug.  It was not a pleasant topic.  Hell the entire war wasn't something he discussed, like ever.  If it hadn't been for the impossible dream, he wouldn't have ever mentioned it.

He chuckled dryly at Kelly's assessment.  "Yes, being shot in a dream and waking with the wound being real qualifies as 'weird'," he said tightly as she tried the more mundane, and very uncomfortable, medicine.  Though he sighed a bit as the pain lessened with her 'prayers'.  He didn't get it but it was hard to argue with results.  "Thanks," he added with a grateful nod.

"So...guessing none of us have a clue what caused the messed up dreams that actually hurt?"  He sure as hell didn't.

"I have a couple theories." Harry says. "Though it's just wild speculation at this point. I think this might be syker-related. Someone else from Faraway, projecting images for some reason. Or maybe some of these Anouks got to Earth somehow, and are projecting images they remember." he leans on the doorway. "It only seemed to affect those of us who were asleep at the time. Crowboy here was on watch" he looks at Crowboy, "and you didn't mention any sort of weird waking hallucinations or anything. If you did, now would be the time to tell us about it." He taps on the door frame as he continues his thought. "Might be worth asking around Turk's crew to see if anyone o' them had the same dream. And speaking of which...Fletcher, do you think you could help me get in touch with The Driver again? Maybe this thing affected him, too."

Episode Three - Baggage

Once Kelly was done, Fletcher got to his feet and put a bit of tentative pressure on the wounded leg.  When it held a bit of his weight and didn't drop him to the floor in pain he gave the Templar an appreciative nod and then turned his attention towards getting re-dressed.

"You, uh, dream 'bout that often Dean?"  Fletcher asked, his tone making it clear he was inquiring more for information regarding the situation at hand then a want or need for Dean to spill his guts in any sort of verbose way.

To Harry he gave a nod.  "'Prolly have enough parts to get somethin' goin'."

Crowboy diligently followed Kelly's directions and did his best to be a helpful assistant.  Not a lot of experience in helping tend to wounds, rather than helping hand them out.  His eyes widened as he watched Kelly call on that miraculous healing that had pulled him back from death.  He then snapped quickly to some form of surprised attention at Kelly's question, "Uh...  Um... Cuz you don't shoot the fifty cal when a blade'll do?  Run outta ammo when you gotta shoot somethin' big?"  The former highwayman didn't sound sure, but mostly because he never sounded sure when speaking to Kelly.

When Harry cut in, he rounded his attention to the big cyborg, "No...  No dreams or anything.  Prudence either."

Crowboy looked back again to Kelly, "Should I go ask around?  Like he said?"

"Good enough."  Kelly responded, high praise from her.  He was learning though, she was a tiny bit proud.  But he couldn't be allowed to know that.

"Yeah that's a good idea go check with them.  Honestly if I had to blame anything right now it'd be the truck, but only because it's shown the ability to mess around with our heads and muck around in there.  But that's like blaming me after finding a corpse with its head cut off.  Yeah I might have the tools to do it, that doesn't mean I did it though."  She shrugged.

"Maybe it, for lack of a better word, 'saw' something?  I mean I don't think it actually sleeps, I think it more makes allowance for the fact that we sleep."

Crowboy gave Kelly a quick affirmative nod and, hand on his hilt, hopped off the trailer and set off to ask around the caravan.  In fact, there was quite a bit of movement stirring up around the trucks and vehicles of the convoy.  They were to set off this morning and preparations are already getting under way...

Dean took a moment, shutting his eyes and focusing for a moment.  He quickly got a flash of...something...  Rifle fire...  Screams...  War cries...  The snarl of chanouk...  Psychic residue from the dreams.  The stain of it was reaching out from....Dean...  Tendrils of it still tried to reach back out from him to the waking minds of the other Dogs.  Then he suddenly felt like something was looking back at him...something cold and hateful...

"Since I fell asleep with the rest of you," Harry says, "we can't be sure that's an effective measure against...whatever this thing is. I don't sleep like the rest of y'all do. When I shut down, I shut down. It's a process regulated by the Chip in me that keeps the demon inside locked tight -- time was, when I'd sleep before, the demon'd send me nightmares, probably to try and break me, keep me down while it used me as its meat puppet. The Chip they put in me when I was canned keeps it  out o' my brain. Mostly. But I still need to shut down once in a while for the demon to do the mojo it does that keeps me goin'. So normally when you see me out, and I'm all quiet and still, it's because my Chip shut off my brain and I'm literally dead to the world." He shook his head. "But I was dreamin' this time. Same as the rest of you. Which means that whatever this thing is, it could pull my mind into Dean's dream when by all rights I ought to be nothin' more than a lump of meat and metal. Maybe it didn't affect Crowboy and Pru because they were awake. Or maybe it's because the thing didn't want 'em for some reason."

He's quiet a moment, letting that sink in. "That's why we ought to see if anyone else in Turk's crew was affected. Because that'll give us more to go on, and let us know if this cold angry thing is just generally unpleasant or if it has a specific beef with us."

Episode Three - Baggage

The truck crews are finishing packing away the last of the gear.  The crew of the Reefer Man's Ice Box are providing breakfast for the scouts and crews.  Looks like pancakes cooked on an electric griddle.  Syrup too.  And butter.  Everyone is stopping by in turn to get their share.

The locals have mostly cleared back to their homes. All good things must end, even the convoy fair.  A few linger, not willing to admit that the convoy will be leaving again...and they getting left here.  Again.  Some of the survivors are negotiating, trying to join a crew.  Some might manage it.  Some of the crew, contracts up, might choose this place to stop roving.  Its the way of the convoy.

Over by Turk's Grand Bizarre, it looked like the Drivers are gathering up.  In the Convoy, the Driver is the owner, commander, bossman, baro, alpha and omega.  Doesn't necessarily mean they drive the truck.  Bud leaves that mostly to his son.  Reefer Man has Maytag for it.  Everyone still knows who's in charge.

Someone from the Black Dog should probably make a showing at the Driver Team Meeting....

Since the inertia seemed to be towards 'let's just leave and see if that solves this new problem' rather than 'let's go looking for something we might not be able to even find, let alone deal with', Fletcher got his stuff together and then headed for the cab of the Dog.

He planned on getting the last bits of the interface connector he'd been working on double checked and connected into the Dog's systems so Harry could plug in when he was ready to give it a test, since it was probably better they try and check that the driver was ok after the night's curious events before hitting the road.

Episode Three - Baggage

At The Driver Team Meeting:

Harry, feeling the most responsible to handle such things, made his clanking way across the lot to join the Drivers.  Generally, the crews and folk milling about with the last preparations had a happy, carefree attitude.  That fades a bit as the cyborg walks through.  Conversations faded away.  Work stopped.  All attention went to the monstrous war machine as he passed.  After he passed, work resumed and the conversations started again...with a new topic...

All four of the convoy Drivers stood separate from the rest at the front of the Grand Bizarre.  Seems like everyone just knows to give the group as much privacy as possible during Team Meetings.  The quartet's conversation stops like all the others as they take note of Harry's approach.

Turk moved aside to make sure there was a spot in the circle for the cyborg and gave him an acknowledgment, "Mornin', Harry."  He began to indicate the others in the circle, "Patience, you already met back at Texarcana."  The woman in the yellow duster folded her arms over her chest and eyed Harry with a stiff nod.  Turk continued round to a little old man chewing on a cigar, "This is Bud.  8-Ball is his."

The old man tilted back...and back to look up at Harry.  He adjusted his thick glasses to try as he tried for a good look.  He plucked the cigar from his lips and spoke with a gravelly, deadpan monotone, "And I thought getting old was tough...  You found one hell of a loophole, son."

Finally, Turk indicated the last Driver.  Its not often to see someone overweight these days.  Underweight is far more common.  Starving is another way of saying it.  This man doesn't look like he's had to worry about starvation or privation in a very long time, "This is Robert.  His is the Ice Box.  The reefer truck.  You'll likely hear some folks calling him the Reefer Man."

Robert cast a quick look up at the iron giant and managed a quick, friendly smile...but looked away again.  Obviously a little uncomfortable in Harry's presence.  In fairness, most folks are.

Back at the Dog

After Harry had stepped off to the Meeting, Fletcher made his way to the cab to work on the interface.  Prudence stayed with the Ma Deuce at the far end of the trailer.  She had stepped a little closer during the initial confusion of the morning, but had moved back to her spot again.  The .50 was a heck of a prize and, while they were technically under the protections of the convoy rules, sometimes folk were still tempted.

Which left Kelly and Dean at the teardrop recovering.  Rearranging.  Resetting.  Discussing could-be's and might-be's.  That's where Crowboy finds them as he comes back.  He's finishing off the last of a rolled up pancake as he tries to speak.  He coughs, nearly chokes, then chokes it down.  "Ma'a...*cough*.. Ma'am?  Sir?  Don't seem like no one had any troubles...  There ain't a lot of folks.  But no one's talkin' about anything weird."  He shrugged apologetically, then added, "There's food though by that cold truck.  It's real good."

Just past Crowboy's shoulder, Kelly and Dean could see a young man.  He stood out because he looked to be trying to psych himself up to talk to Crowboy or Kelly or Dean or all three.  Sometimes you can just tell when someone wants to talk to you.  Beside this man is a woman.  She was speaking quickly and quietly with her companion; maybe to encourage....maybe to warn off...

Harry was somewhat used to this, so he gave his best neighborly wave with his normal arm, making sure to keep his chainsaw arm down and nonthreatening. He wasn't entirely sure how much, if at all, that mitigated any concerns about him, but it wasn't as if he could do much about it anyway.

"Be more careful Crowboy."  Kelly told him calmly and with uncharacteristic gentleness.  "It's probably fine this time, but I've known more than one person who woke up in a cage beside me after accepting free food and drinks."

To the strangers she gave a cock-eyed look.  "Well now, I suppose you're off to as good of a start as any talking to me.  Not that I'm in charge of a damn thing on this rig, the only one who's really got a dedicated job is The Big Guy and he'll make the final decision.  But everyone else will make the final decision too, he won't even consider it unless everyone else is convinced first."

Well that and I'll have to lie to the demon machine inside his head so he doesn't just murder these two.  But she could do that discretely and they didn't know about that.  Kelly had a sense of loyalty and really didn't like spreading information about her companion's possible vulnerabilities, for her own sake if no one else's.

"I'll tell you up front this is a weird run, we're going for our own reasons and we ain't paying.  But, if you're just interested in a ride, it's not like we're charging either.  So let's start with who you are, what you do, and why you want to go there."

"Oh and try real hard to impress Dean-O over there.  He especially don't cotton to much bullshit, and he really don't like people that backstab him."  Kelly grimaced.  "I mean Jesus Dean, did you really have to do that thing to his toenails, it was just a few four-ten shells he stole from ya."

Rusty Harry:
"Well, that depends. I'm usually fine for most of the day, but my Chip shuts me down for a few hours every 24 hours or so. I don't get much of a say-so when that happens, so like as not I'll have to let my crew know to take over for me when I'm feelin' sleepy. Changeover shouldn't take much more than a couple minutes...we can pull off to the side and then catch up when the drivers switch." He says, then frowns. "I ain't sure that's the only problem, though. Did any of you folks have any sort of weird dreams last night? Or wake up with injuries you didn't have before?"

Turk's eyes narrowed at the seemingly out-of-nowhere question.  He looked to the other Drivers, who looked as equally suspiciously confused as Turk did.  Especially Patience, who seemed to have very little of her namesake for oddity.  Turk turned back to Harry, "Well...  I won't say I have had partikalarly pleasant dreams or comfortable nights sleepin' since them bombs fell.  But, last night didn't seem much different than another."  Again, Turk leveled such a suspicious look up at the big Cyborg, "Why?"

At The Black Dog

Dean simply watched the approaching Mateo with a deadpan look.  When Kelly tried to coax him into her testing game, the syker just folded his arms over his chest and remained stonily silent.  Which, I guess, is a sort of indicating a level of unimpressed-ness.

At The Black Dog

Mateo looked over to the silent, bald figure as Kelly indicated him....and finding no friendliness there, he returned his attention to Kelly.  At least she was speaking, so that seemed like a better avenue.  And the silent guy was...discomforting...

Mateo tried to puff himself up again, obviously trying to seem worth the effort, "I'm Mateo."  He cocked a thumb back over his shoulder to the girl behind him, "That's Syb."  He straightened his scavenged leather vest, tried to look proud, "We're good scouts...and watchers...  I can hunt and trap.  I'm good with my hands too, y'know?  I work hard.  Syb can cook really good.  Makes even crap taste like gold, y'know?  She works hard too. We can help however you need.  We're not askin' for a free ride, y'know?  We can work.  Help.  He paused, to think about how best to say it, "We just need to get West.  As close to old All-The-Car-Key as we can."

Syb spoke up quietly at that point, "Albuquerque."

Harry nodded. "That's why I asked about weird dreams, not bad ones. Because my crew and I had a doozy of a weird dream. One of our crew is a..." He hesitated a moment. Dean's abilities were his own business. So he modified what he'd been about to say. "...a veteran of the Faraway War. And last night, we all dreamed we were facing a last stand. Some of us even woke up to wounds that hadn't been there when we dropped off." He scowls. "And like I told them, when I sleep these days, I don't dream. Not since they installed me in this tin can." He thumped his chassis for emphasis. "When we were all awake, our veteran friend said he felt like somethin' was watchin' us. Something unfriendly." he sighed. "I'd been hoping that it was some local varmint...something to do with being near the Maelstrom of Old Dallas. If other folk had similar experiences, I figured that whatever weirdness was going on wasn't fixated on any folk in particular. But if none of you folk had any strangeness, that's sounding mighty unlikely. Whatever this thing is, it dislikes us in particular." He shakes his head. "So I ain't sure us coming with you on this run is a good idea. For all we know, this is just a local phenomenon, and we just happened to have the bad luck of having along someone who triggered it, and once we're clear of Dallas we're clear of whatever this thing is. But just in case it's in a following mood, I don't want to put the rest of you folk in danger. Especially during a hard run like this is shaping up to be." He looked at Turk. "Sorry, man. I don't mean to be a downer. It sounds like you could use our firepower on this run. But I have no clear idea what we're dealing with here. If you still want us along, knowing the risks, then we'll come. But if you don't like the odds, then give me an alternate route. We can rendezvous after we've shaken this thing."

The Drivers listen to Harry's explanation patiently.  At the end of it, they shared the quiet, meaningful looks that folk who have worked together for a very long time are capable of.  Patience spoke up first, "Is that it?  You all had some weird dreams and maybe woke up hurting?  You don't know what did it.  You don't know if its following you or just something around here.  Seems to me, you can't really make any good decision till you know something certain."  She lifted her hands as though to indicate the very world around us, "This world is full of weird shit.  Constantly.  Never ending.  I have been chased by worms the size of my damn truck.  I have seen sykers make folks dance and sing and burn inside out.  I have fought Doomers, the dead, gangers, shadows, robots, fish men...  Jesus...  Fucking dreams now..."  She trails off, shaking her head.

Turk chuckled a bit, looking up to Harry, "I think what Patience might be tryin' to say is, we deal with weird stuff all the time.  Every day is dangerous.  But we keep goin'."  He nodded off towards where the Black Dog was parked, "You're a dead man stuffed full of military hardware driving a truck that looks like it just rolled off the lot from Before and fell through time to now.  /You're/ weird shit.  Sometimes its nice to have some weirdness on your side.  We didn't take you and yours on out of kindness.  We fully expect you all to give anybody who tries to take us on absolute weird-ass hell.  You think you can handle that?"

Bud blew out a small cloud of smoke, deadpanning quietly to Reefer Man, "Besides, maybe we'll get lucky and get that Faraway dream too, eh?  Always wanted to see another planet...  This one has gotten old."

Reefer Man grinned a little back at Bud, then looked up at Harry again.  Everyone had to look to Harry, "Maybe we can help?  Like Patience and Turk said, we have seen some things.  We know some things."

Reefer Man, Robert, gave a quick nod to the suggestion of speaking to Dean and seemed even more interested at the notion that the Black Dog...had a mind of its own...  But, before the engineer could start in with follow up questions, he was cut off.

Turk cleared his throat to regain attention, "We'll have to get all the details on down the road.  Best to get these trucks movin' out before we lose too much of the mornin'.  Quicker we go, quicker we're through.  Got schedules."  Turk nodded to each Driver in turn as he laid out the order, "Patience rolls first and will take point for the first leg.  The Bizarre follows her.  Then the Icebox.  Bud, you're next."  Turk finally looked up to Harry, with a slight grin, "That puts you and your Dog behind the 8-Ball.  Tail-end Charlie.  Told we didn't agree to let you tag along out the kindness of our hearts.  You know as well as we do, some pack o' scraphogs or other madfucks decides to get frisky, they'll likely hit you first and try to peel you off."  He took a slow, showy, appraising look of the war machine that is Harry, "Which ought to teach them some kinda awful lesson.  I hope." Turk then pointed off to where the scout cars were gathered up having their own meeting, "Trouble's gonna have two outriders ahead of the convoy and we'll have two pacing behind the Dog.  Motorcycles are stowed up, so's the extras can help man the fighting positions on the trucks.  They'll cycle out with the scout drivers as we push on through the darktime.  Harry, you need any extra hands over there?"

The young hero then looked back to Kelly..then Dean...and Crowboy too, "How about you?  Why you headed West?  Heard you are new to Turk's convoy..."

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

In the Cab

It had taken Fletcher most of the past week or so to put together all his scrounged bits from Lockesburg's repairshop in what he hoped would do the job required.  All of his puttering with electronics had attracted the attention of a curious, hopeful tech spirit.  It used to buzz and hum along the airwaves of the the old cellular communications system.  It had recognized the bits that Fletcher was using...  Hoped for a home...

A bargain was easily struck...

The Junker had almost finished it last night, but was forced to sleep.  Stupid biology.  Even worse that the sleep had been so frustratingly interrupted...  But he had it now, everything was in place.  The cell spirit buzzed and hummed happily as it powered the junky addition to the pristine CB system of the Dog.

The dial was tuned...  Static...  Static...  Till it hit Channel 19.  Then the Junker CB-Rig really began to hum and glow faintly.

"...Nine...  Breaker-breaker 1-9...  Radio check.  Anyone...  Anyone got ears on?"

Episode Three - Baggage

Fletcher squinted just a bit as he turned the dial.  The cab was roomy, but if the radio he'd cobbled together wasn't happy, there wasn't much room to get out of the way if it really decided to try and get some revenge.

As the hum increased he leaned back until the squeal turned into an actual voice.

He couldn't help but grin as he picked up the mic and pressed the button.

"That's a big 10-4, you're comin' in loud and proud."  He replied.

I hope." Harry did some quick mental calculus. With him likely driving, and Kelly being more a close-quarters fighter, that left Dean, Fletcher, Crowboy, and Pru as shootists. Dean seemed good both ranged and when able to sneak in. Fletcher he wasn't sure about...most of Fletcher's devices seemed to be closer range affairs, and Harry hadn't seen him actually shooting a firearm during the whole Lordesburg thing. Crowboy was alright, but kind of excitable. Pru was likely the best shot out of all of them, but she couldn't be on duty 24 hours at a time for three days straight.

"I think so." He said at last. "Not a whole lot, but I think we need one gunhand and someone who might be able to take over the rig when I'm powered down. If you don't mind, I'll ask around at the market a bit, see if there's anyone who's looking for passage West and willing to barter their skills. If I can't find anyone suitable hanging around, we'll make do, but in my experience there's usually someone who needs to get somewhere hanging around when trucks pull in."

"Always,"  Turk agrees, "Choose careful as you can and keep a sharp eye on them.  It'd be a damn bold one to try and pull something on you.  Even so, they won't have much opportunity for too much mischief.  Your rig.  Your risk.  I'll have Trouble pick someone to send over.  We've got a couple tryin' to get hours on rigs that'd appreciate the chance."

The convoy chief looked back around to the other Drivers, "Now for the boring shit..."  What followed was a quick rundown of the check-in times and codes.  A quick sketch-out of the next ten hours or so of driving.  Discussions about possible quick stopover points, that sort of thing.  They should hit the first delivery stop at about that ten hour mark, if all goes well.  So don't hold your breath.

That stop is somewhere near the old city of Wichita Falls, now know as Wichita Fell.

After the discussion, the Drivers gave their pleasantries, except Patience who hated pleasantries, and began to head off for their rigs to start getting things finished up to roll.  Unless Harry had a mind to stop any of them, he was also free to head off.

"Glad we could get ya out'a the mud."  Fletcher replied, grinning at how well things seemed to be working.

For the moment.

"You can call me the Junkman."  He replied after a brief pause to figure out an appropriate reply.  He didn't know much about dead folks, but he figured if he tried to fit in with the Driver and what he was used to, it might make things easier.  Couldn't hurt at the very least he reasoned.

The CB crackled with static again, then the voice returned, "Copy that, Junkman.  Glad to know you...  Knew...  Helped before..."  The voice faded into static again, then slowly came back, "Looks like the convoy's startin' up...  We got the go ahead?  Where's Harry?"

As the Driver's voice called it across the radio, Fletcher could just start to hear the other rigs beginning to rattle and rumble through getting started.  None sounded great about it, but they would eventually get started up.

Fletcher could also see the great, clanking form of Harry striding back to the Dog through what little was left of the crowd....

Harry's clanking, whirring approach would be notable by almost anyone.  What was left of folk around the settlement found anything else to do and anywhere else to be.  Luckily most had places to be and things to do so they didn't have to just dart off fearfully with no direction...

The trucks were going through the startup procedures.  Stop and starts and trying again.  Nothing worked very well anymore...well...  The Black Dog was an exception.  A worrying, wondering exception.

Harry could see Kelly at the edge of the trailer talking something over with two scavenger folk.  Dean was leaning against the camper, watching silently.  Crowboy was lingering nearby, tying something down or shifting something around.  Y'know.  Useful.
Prudence was guarding the fifty and watching everywhere else.  Just in case.

At the cyborg's approach, the young man and the girl both cast a look his way.  The young man's eyes went big at the sight, "Damn!  I heard...  But...  Damn..."

The girl seemed....less surprised, but it was still hard to tell...

Episode Three - Baggage

"They wanna sign on Harry.  Told 'em no pay, but a free ride, and I reckon a fair cut if we do come across anything out there that would give anyone a cut of anything.  They seem all right with that.  They've told me good enough lies so far, really."  Kelly shrugged.  "Told 'em they were goin' nowhere unless everyone was all right.  Ah'm all right.  I ain't heard nothin' opposed from anyone."

Harry would know Kelly's little tactics pretty well by now.  Her opinion was actually a little more positive than that, but she was being standoffish and kind of a bitch, though not a whole-blown one, for, well, reasons.

She pointed her thumb at Syb.  "That one's smarter than th' other one."

And that was also a classic Kelly tactic.  The tests of character had already begun.

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Harry nods and looks the two over. "Right. Well, here's the deal. We're about to embark on a hard run at the edge of Coyote territory. That's three full days with minimal stops, only long enough to piss and switch around drivers. And we're at the bitch end of the line, because we're the most heavily armed. That means if there's any raiders that want to take a shot at the Convoy, they're going to try to get through us first. So with that all said, can either of you drive a rig? Or keep a decent shot while on the move?"

Harry wasn't saying this just to intimidate the pair. He made sure he was loud enough for the rest of the crew to hear him, as this seemed like a good enough time to let them in on the details of the run as any. He was curious to see how well the boy there would respond to Kelly's jab at his expense.

Mateo bristled a little at Kelly's report that he was "lying."  A little more at the dig that Syb was smarter than him.  The digging was starting to get to him, obviously.  But the threat of the cyborg and the fact that they really needed the ride...  So the young man choked it down and put his attention back to Harry and his summary of the drive to come...

The description didn't seem to phase Mateo, but he kinda looked young and dumb enough that he probably wouldn't let any dangerous description phase him.

Syb glanced up at Harry as he spoke.  Still hard to tell much with her mask, but she didn't seem bothered either.  More resigned if anything.

At the questions, Mateo straightened up, "I can shoot."  He failed to mention whether it was "on the move" or not.  Or whether Syb could.  And kept talking quick enough to try an cover for that, "Never drove a truck...  But, we got two sharp eyes each, eh?  Sounds like you could use more eyes on this run, right?  Seein' any assholes comin' up quicker, gotta be worth a ride..."

The gear shift in the cab drifted on its own, settling into neutral.  The clutch went down slower under an unseen weight.  Then the Dog growled to rumbling life in one swift go.  Smoke coughed from the stacks for a moment before the truck settled into an easy idle.

Lots of folks glanced over at the Dog's start up.  Been a while since anyone heard a machine start up so easy and clean.  There would be jealousy.....

With the Dog rumbling, Fletcher swung himself out the passenger door and shimmied down the running board before clamoring past the rear chassis and onto the trailer.  He figured one last check to make sure everything was tied down wouldn't hurt.

"Just 'bout ready ta roll out?"  He called cheerfully in Harry's direction before noticing the pair of strangers who seemed to be involved in some sort of discussion.

Seeing he was interrupting Fletcher went quiet so whatever was happening could finish.

The young, masked woman shrugged lightly, still looking up to Harry.  Her quiet voice was lost in the rumbling startup of the Dog, forcing her to have to repeat herself louder than she had spoken yet, "There's no reason you should.  We need your help.  You don't need mine."  She looked to Mateo, who did not seem to approve of her answer.  His look said C'mon /sell/ it!

She sighed.  She looked around the Dog's crew...then slowly back up to Harry, almost apologetically, "I... I saw a black dog...  It came from fire...  It carried the the dead...  it carried a sword....  It carried blood...  I followed the dog...  It took me home..."  Her brow creased in confusion as she said it all.  The look she gave Harry after almost seemed to beg him to explain what she had just said.

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

"Hmmm." Harry grunted. He looked around the crew, then look back. He grunted again. It was hard to know what to make of that. Sure, the rig was known as The Black Dog, and "came from fire" was a pretty accurate description on how they'd joined up. Harry and The Driver were dead, no bones about it, and Kelly had Connor tucked away somewhere. He wasn't sure what the "carried blood" bit was about, though Dean had been a soldier, Crowboy had been a bandit, and they'd all gotten a bit dusted up in Lordesburg. And they were all trying to get The Driver "home" to Bullhead City.

And of course, Harry was a sucker for folk who needed help. That, more than anything, was what convinced him.

"Well, you're not wrong. The Dog here certainly carries my dead ass around," he pats the rig, "and we've got at least one sword and plenty of blood between us all. I can't guarantee any of us will make it home, but that's certainly where we're headed. Climb aboard, keep your eyes peeled for trouble, and if you can think of a way to make yourself useful, then you're welcome to come with us as far as you want to go. Otherwise, we'll let you off at the next town and you can work out your plans from there. Sound good?"

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Syb seemed to relax a little listening to Harry.  She gives just a quick faint nod, "Thanks."  She then hitches her pack and moves to push Mateo to the flatbed...probably before he can say anything else.

Mateo seemed surprised and a little confused at Sub's recitation...and Harry's go along with it, "Wait... That's...  What?  We can go?"  By then, Syb had taken his shoulder and he let himself be urged onto the trailer, "I mean, yeah.  Great.  We'll be useful!  No worries..."  As they climbed up, Mateo tried whispering a questioning something, but Syb just shook her head.

The show seeming over, Dean pushed himself up and away from the camper.  He seemed to have little to say for or against the pair.  No welcomes or mean comments.  He just walked away down to the end of the trailer for a quick word with Prudence.

Crowboy had been looking around, back and forth between the others, watching over the negotiations.  His own joining up had been a bit different....  Different circumstances.  As Harry gave the go ahead, he glanced at Kelly to see how she seemed to feel about it.  Likely so he could take his cue from her...

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Kelly rolled her head a little to Crowboy, and made eye contact with him, and subtly pointed her thumb at Mateo.

It was time for Crowboy to get a proper learnin'.  No, he wouldn't know what to do, not exactly.  That was kind of the point.

Kelly on the other hand knew exactly what she was going to do.  Split them up, and do it using a most unfair form of bait.

"Well come on."  She told Syb.  "I have claimed the sleeper cab on behalf of the female race."

That was Kelly's weird idea of a joke.  But the next part wasn't, and she added it discretely.  "And it's the closest thing you'll get to privacy on this rig where we're all crammed in every corner.  I think it's just you me and Pru."

Hard and tough as Kelly was, and having spent quite a lot of time with no privacy, there were certain times she just didn't want anyone or anything (male) looking at her.  Really, the sleeper of the cab wasn't actually private, but it afforded an illusion of privacy and that was as good as it got on the Dog.  Having deprived of even that for a time, she knew its value, and how sweet it was.  She knew she was playing some seriously devious hardball here to learn what these two were really about.

Harry tilted his head at that, and thought about asking Since when?, but shrugged instead. Instead, he ambled over to the driver's seat, and made sure to fill Fletcher in on the run and the new teammates.

"We'll have to try figuring out what that dream was all about on the go, and hope that whatever it was we pissed off doesn't follow." he says after he gives Fletcher all the info. From his tone, he was far from confident that this wouldn't be a recurring problem, but the rest of the Convoy had been given fair warning and Turk had wanted them to come anyway, so it was what it was.

Moving onto better news he informed Harry, "Got that radio workin' and tuned in.  Should be able ta dial in the Driver just 'bout anytime now.  Assumin' it don't burn itself out.  Hard ta make gear that'll channel that sort of energy and actually hold up.  Whatever tricks they had 'fore everythin' blew up is 'prolly lost outside Denver and such."

For his part Fletcher took up the shotgun position in the truck.  He wanted to make sure his new radio setup was working, plus if anything somehow went wrong with the Dog that would be the best place to be, assuming such a thing was even possible.

The fact it was the place farthest from anything that might try to rush them from behind was just an added perk.

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Kelly climbed her narrow end in past the boys and assumed her position.  Well, temporary position.  Said narrow butt let her stick herself in weird spots in the cab sometimes.

She couldn't help but hum-murmur when she overheard the word Denver.  She didn't know a lot of pre-war songs, really, only the ones (human) Connor had known (and not even all of those) and the ones she could remember her father singing.

"I called up my friend LeRoy on the phone, I said, Kelly, I'm afraid to be alone, 'cause I got some weird ideas in my head, about things to do in Denver when you're dead..."

It helped this one was also very popular with the Templars, which kept it alive in her memory.

Adorably, Kelly had no idea her dad worked her name into all of these songs to entertain her and that those weren't the actual lyrics, having never heard the originals (or if she had, it was far, far beyond conscious memory). Even in examples like this one where the substitution made the song make no sense it didn't occur to her.  She'd always thought her parents named her Kelly because the name was in all these songs.  But it probably made her sound like an absolute egomaniac too.

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Crowboy caught Kelly's look and, to his credit, quickly caught on.  As Kelly swooped in and cut Syb away, the recovering bandit stepped quickly to Mateo's side.  Right in his face and started talking, with that sort of fast patter of someone who has no intention of letting you get a word in edgewise, "Hey! Congrats on gettin' on board.  They don't let just anybody on this rig.  Nope.  I had to fight to get on this rig...  Well...  There was fighting...  Then I was a prisoner, but we're all friends now."  He nudged the now bewildered looking Mateo towards the camper, "You can drop any gear in here.  You had somethin' to eat?  You missed the pancakes...  Those were great..."  He pulled open the camper door and all but shoved Mateo in, ignoring the newcomers protests, "Anyway..  Word of advice, really don't try to fuck with the rig or the crew.  Harry does /not/ take that shit lightly.  I know he seems nice, what with the chainsaw and all..."  In they went.

Syb went along with Kelly with far less protest or resistance than Mateo attempted unsuccessfully.  Especially after Kelly's claim that the sleeper cab was some kind of private sacred ground.  She climbed up into the cab and stumbled her way through, then back to the sleeper section.  She settled on the couch, pulling a stuffed shoulder bag around to put in front of her.  A little defensively.

Kelly's sing-song got a look.  Especially the things to do in Denver when you're dead part...  Everyone knew about Denver.  She shifted a bit further away from Kelly.  There was plenty of room after all.

Episode Three - Baggage

The CB is quiet for a moment...then an energetic hum winds up and the static on the channel fades in and out....

Then, a voice.  Familiar to Harry now.

"10-2...Harry... Thanks to Junkman.  Ready to...to hit the big road"

The GPS screen clicked on at showed a blue route line between Dallas and Bullhead.  Estimated travel time about 18 hours, straight though.  Of course, that route information is...well...pretty out of date.

"Two days...with stops....  Dang regulations...  Wish we...we could push through...  Sara's waiting...  Cell's not working...  can't tell her....late...  Think Junkman could...check?  Over."

Cell service just ain't what it used to be.  Roads either.  Trip is gonna be significantly longer than two days...

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Harry frowned. Yeah, that was about what he expected...The Driver didn't seem to have a good sense of just how much time had passed, and didn't seem to know that the whole world had gone south. Aside from not wanting to go East -- whatever made The Driver unwilling to go past the Mississippi had stuck.

"That's a negative, Black Dog." Harry said. "The problem ain't with our equipment -- it's the network that's down. And it's going to take a mite longer than 18 hours because...we need to route around all the construction that's taking place. Going to have to detour to avoid traffic snarls, too." It wasn't exactly a lie, but Harry still wasn't thrilled with with having to phrase it like that. They'd be lucky to get to Bullhead City in just over a month, and that was if everything went fairly smooth. Which it never did. Realistically, Harry expected that the optimistic outlook was closer to two months. "But I reckon that Sara knows you're still on your way. She's been waitin' this long already -- she'll understand the delay."

He wondered how true that was. Harry wasn't really expecting there to be anything left of Bullhead City, to be honest, and it was long odds that Sara had made it through Judgement Day, let alone the years since. But he'd committed to at least trying to reunite them, in whatever fashion he could manage.

The radio static'd out again for a few seconds.

"Look, I should probably focus on the road...  I'm 10-10."

A truck horn blared up ahead as Patience's truck started to pick and maneuver out of the parking lot back out onto the broken pavement.

"Copy that, buddy." Harry says. "Don't worry, we will get you home. Over and out." He sets the mic back down on the cradle, and watches as the trucks begin to pull into formation.

He catches Syb looking around out of the corner of his eye. "So I'm going to go out on a limb," he says casually, "and guess that you're some sort of sensitive. Well, you just met The Driver. When you said the Black Dog carried the dead, he's probably the one you were sensing. If you're going to be traveling with us for a while, you should probably know the particulars." He watches the trucks maneuver, and then, when clear, begins maneuvering himself, talking as he handles the wheel. "See, the reason this truck is in as good a shape as it is, is because it's haunted. We think The Driver is the spirit of, well, whoever was driving this rig when Judgement Day happened. As far as we can tell, his spirit fused with the tractor. As long as we keep him fueled and can provide spare parts, he keeps the rig in tip-top shape. In exchange, we've promised to try and get him 'home,' which is Bullhead City, Arizona." he spares a glance at Syb. "You said you 'followed the dog home' before. Where's home for you, exactly?"

Kelly was quiet, and, at the moment, extremely pleased with herself.  Kelly had run a con and played a hunch and son of a gun, she had hit pay-dirt.  It was the little things in life like feeling clever for the moment that motivated Kelly.

She was very curious to see the reaction.  Kelly herself knew less about magic and fused souls and machines than she did about red herrings.

"Well, I think the convoy runs through, or 'least 'round, Albuquerque."  Fletcher stated.

Between the Driver's goal, and the young woman's reluctance, Fletcher didn't know how feasible, worthwhile, or even possible, trying to track down a mysterious place might be.  Still, no reason not to try to be positive, so he then added, "So, should at least be able ta get ya close I'd guess."

Harry nodded at along with Fletcher, though he didn't say anything. That was likely to be all the girl was willing to give up, it seemed, so he turned his attention back to the road.

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Kelly did her best to keep an eye on their new passenger without keeping an eye on their new passenger.  Kelly didn't think she would try to physically harm anyone (yet), but she was running something here, and Kelly didn't want her to know she knew, and she wanted the others to know, but Kelley didn't want her to know they knew either, so it would have to wait until Kelly got a chance to work the grapevine.

She knew just the way to do it too.  "Fletch, next time we stop, I'll need you to drop trou so I can check the stitches real quick and make sure they aren't inflamed or infected.  It ought to be fine, but when you're using something besides a pre-War suture kit it's always a good idea, and it's a hell of a lot easier to deal with it sooner than later."

She wasn't lying, though the necessity of examining the stitches at that point in time wasn't great because if they did get infected he would know and the odds were very low in the first place.  But it sounded good.  Most of Kelly's sutures were made with hand carved or blacksmith forged needles, fish hooks, dental floss, catgut, or sometimes pre-War fishing filaments scavenged from the ruins of the old world, all treated with moonshine, iodine or whatever she could get her hands on that would act as a good enough disinfectant.

She couldn't help but recall one poor bastard in the pit who'd been left with a compound fracture of his left arm.  An especially merciful patron had responded to her plea for a bottle of whiskey, which was the only reason the man didn't die of infection.  Kelly had done what she could with a stick, a wrap of cloth, an old safety pin, and an old cotton scrap she'd pulled thread out of, but his arm was never right again and he'd blamed her for it.  Lesson in gratitude.

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

As Harry pulled into position, he flicked on the radio, and set the on-board MP3 player to random. By complete and totally random happenstance, this wound up being the first song that popped up:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2KkoTbJ9o4

"~I'm a clone
I know it and I'm fine
I'm one and more are on the way

I'm two, doctor
Three's on the line
He'll take incubation another day

I'm all alone, so are we all
We're all clones
All are one and one are all
All are one and one are all

We destroyed the government
We're destroying time
No more problems on the way

I'm through doctor
We don't need your kind
The other ones
Ugly ones
Stupid boys
Wrong ones

I'm all alone, so are we all
We're all clones
All are one and one are all
All are one and one are all

Six is having problems
Adjusting to his clone status
Have to put him on a shelf
(Please don't put me on the shelf)

All day long we hear him crying so loud
I just want to be myself
I just want to be myself
I just want to be myself
Be myself
Be myself

I'm all alone, so are we all

We destroyed the government
We're destroying time
No more problems on the way

I'm through doctor

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Turk's convoy rumbled north...

It was a long day.  A very long day, considering the poor sleep most of the Black Dog's crew managed the night before.  The kind of day that just seems to stretch on...seeming far longer than it should...  Feels like months...

The old highway north from Near Dallas is still in what passes for good condition in the Wasted West.  But the farther north they go, the worse it becomes.  They start to get forced through side roads.  Some no more than paths possibly cut long after the bombs fell.  It forces the convoy to slow to a crawl at times.  Turk keeps firm to his non-stop warning.  There are a few fast stop-overs for leg-stretching and other necessities.  But they are done quick.  Do what's needful then back on the road.  Stopping too long is apt to attract attention.

That rule does not seem to extend to the scouts.  The crew of the Dog might spot some of the scout vehicles pausing here and there.  Possibly observing something.  Sometimes, they seem to be dropping off duffle bags, totes, boxes, etc.  Picking up some empty ones.  Some that might actually have something in it too.  After the make their stops, the scouts speed back up and slip back into some pre-determined outrider position.

The Convoy chose Channel 8 to the "Sesame Street" for this leg.  The chat radio.  And the truckers and scouts kept up a rolling banter most of the time.  Continuing longstanding, friendly arguments and conversations.  Some sang.  Some even sang well.  One of the best was, surprisingly, Bud on the 8-Ball.  The old guy still had some pipes.  They never talked about anything specific about where they were going to or coming from.  Likely in case of prying ears.  Any lurkers who picked up this channel would likely be entertained more than enlightened as to the Convoy's secrets.  It had a community feel to it.  A collective whistling in the dark as the rolled through the wastelands.

As travelling in the wastes goes, not a bad time.  Boring really.  Which is kind of a blessing in these times.

Welcome to the Road!
The Convoy is on this leg for a good 10 hours or so.

You are all Fatigued (-1) from the Nightmare.  That Fatigue level is cleared for Kelly and Fletcher 4 hours of restful sleep.  There are opportunities for that on this leg.  Any takers?

Harry's Fatigue level is cleared by an extra hour of Downtime when he choses to shut down for a bit.  Of course, without a backup driver yet, that might be a trick.  If Harry asks at one of the stops, a backup driver will be called out.

There's a lot of empty travel time here, so how does your character make use of it?  Any goals to accomplish?  If nothing specific, use Interlude!  If you work in the suggestion to your post, draw a Chip!

Fletcher - Three of Hearts! - Practice a skill OR Relate a tale of Fletcher's greatest love (lost, found, present, or waiting)

Harry - Two of Clubs! - Brood or be angry about something OR Relate a tale of misfortune from Harry's past

Kelly - Jack of Spades! - Spend time "alone" in quiet contemplation OR Relate a tale of victory or personal triumph

KELLY IS UP FIRST! GOOOOOOOOO!  Followed by Fletcher, then Harry.

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Outside of playing weird games with people, stitching cadavers, creeping Crowboy in line, or hitting things with a sharp stick, Kelly tended to not have a lot to do in motion.  Well, officially her job was to be there to tell Harry's chips and bits to simmer down, but Harry was usually fine when he was left alone.

Whatever had happened had left her not feeling too spry.  She'd have to check this stitches she gave Fletcher, but that would wait.  She dozed.

Hedge, The Maze, Some Time Ago:
A huge woman, the tallest and broadest Kelly had ever seen, had to duck to enter the pit.  Well, there was the pit, and there was the pit.  This place, a combination of gambling den, brothel, pub, and hostel was called the pit, but there was also the pit which was the place where Kelly lived and fought.

The center of the pit was a good 30 feet across.  Around that was a ring, 10 feet wide, a ring of cages, split down the middle, so those were about 5 feet wide.  Kelly lived in one.  Above her was the seating.

She could see a lot from her spot sometimes.  A few regulars would come by to sometimes to torment her, or a few who had won some bets would sometimes give her a little something.  It wasn't so much kindness in most cases, they just wanted her to keep winning, and clean bandages, tape, clean rags, antiseptic, a partial bottle of spirits or some extra nosh all helped with that.  She always hid whatever little she had in the straw, she wouldn't get anything if they saw she already had something.  She even took their cigarettes and chaw, though Kelly didn't smoke or dip and never would, but they were fantastic for trading with the other captives.

She knew this big, big woman was trouble.  After she and her entourage went to the bar and talked to the man she know knew as Boss, and then Boss asked for Hikida.

Kelly wondered who'd beat who in a fight.  Hikida was old but she was nasty, she could knock Kelly or any of the other captives on their ass (it helped she used a taser originally intended for livestock).  But damn, that was a big bitch.

And soon the three of them came over.

"This is it."  Hikida introduced Kelly.  Hikida was a good teacher, but she was careful to never get genuinely attached to Kelly or any of the other slaves.

"This is a little girl."  The big woman complained.  "I can't fight this.  Fuck, look at her, she's still busted up from her last fight."

Hikida corrected.  "No that's from two days ago.  We've fed her some drunks who paid a lot to take a swing since then."

"Wait."  The big woman stopped.  "You make them fight every night?"

Boss interjected like the big woman was some kind of idiot.  "Well, yeah, we don't make any money if they don't fight.  The people want to see the fights."

The giantess shot right back.  "What a fucking two bit outfit.  You're not going to to get good fights this way.  Shit.  She's thin as a rail and half starved."

The three wandered off, arguing.

Over the course of the next two days Kelly would learn the very tall woman's name was Awesome Tara.  It wasn't a very good stage name, but it got the point across.  Apparently she was something like Kelly, but on a much bigger scale, a rare female in the cage fighting scene.  The difference was, Awesome Tara was free and did this because she wanted to.

Awesome Tara had been called here to fight, and they wanted her to fight Kelly as her opener.  The truth was, the novelty that was Kelly, though it still brought in jingle, wasn't what it used to be and the slavers wanted to get one last big payday out of her and put someone else in her cage.  They figured Awesome Tara ripping the guts out of the unlikely girl scrapper was a good way to do that, and set up interest for Awesome Tara's series.

The trouble was, Awesome Tara was a bit of an odd duck.  She didn't care that Kelly was a slave or that Kelly was abused or had to live in a cage.  She was convinced, and not wrongly so, that Kelly would never, ever beat her in the condition she was in.

After two days, Kelly's cage was opened on the outside edge.  Normally, they only opened the pit side.  The outside had only ever been opened when they wanted to move her to another partition.

Two of the toughs who kept order the place grabbed her, took her to one of the cheap rooms they rented by the hour.  It had been cleared out, and a shackle had been installed on a support beam.  They attached that to her ankle.  Really, a very minimal restraint.  There was actually a cot in here.  It was almost a decent place for a human being.

Shortly Hikida joined her.

"Don't get used to this, it's only for the next three days.  We reached a compromise with Awesome Tara."

For the first time since that Black Hat had cracked a rifle over her head, Kelly was fed well and allowed to sleep normally.  They even took her outside for a bit each day, because they figured Awesome Tara was going to kill her.

They brought her portions of roasted animal carcasses.  That was the normal food there, for the high paying customers anyway.  They roasted them in an open pit, so the slaves could see it and smell it and never have any.  Kelley gnawed down to the bone, to her captors' amusement.  One made a joke if she could get that hunk of meat down to a clean white bone like that, he knew another bone she could- and that's when Hikida punched him in the gut.

The three days flew by.

This was the biggest crowd there ever had been in the Pit.  Awesome Tara fought with a massive axe, and she insisted her opponent have the same.  Kelly's wasn't as big naturally, but she was better off with one closer to her size anyway.

Kelly studied her opponent carefully.  When they rang the bell (it was an old school bell someone had scavenged that they just hit with a hammer), she didn't move.  Awesome Tara looked at Kelly quizzically, then seemed to shrug, and moved in fast.  For as big as she was, Awesome Tara could move.

But she didn't move fast enough this time.  Kelly stepped out of the way, began evasive maneuvers.  Awesome Tara kept coming, not bothered by this, she'd seen the tactic before.  Awesome Tara had plenty of stamina, she wasn't one of those brutes that needed to win fast, she was one of those brutes would could win any old time.  Cheers turned to boos and hisses as this prolonged.

That's when Kelly finally struck.  Unlike Awesome Tara, she knew her battlefield.  The floor of the pit was all scavenged planks, and one of then was really creaky and rotten.  Kelly normally kept off of it, but tonight, she attacked... the floor, with the axe they'd given her.

The blow split the board, and normally not much would have happened, but it was rotten all the way through.  Awesome Tara's massive leg went in.  Not all the way through, her massive leg was far too big for that, but it knocked her completely off balance.

Kelly came in hard.  The crowd erupted.  Though Kelly wasn't striking decisive blows, she was tearing pieces out of her opponent all the same.  But Awesome Tara lived up to her name.  She managed to orient her axe to catch Kelly's, but what Awesome Tara didn't anticipate, and neither did Kelly, was the maneuver, intended to catch Kelly's axe pinned to the floor on the haft just behind the head, wound up cutting another board that was suspect, and the two of them tumbled into a wet, sandy pit.

The axes gone by the wayside (it would take far too much time to retrieve either one of them), the two fell on each other unarmed.  Kelly was no pushover, but damn, Awesome Tara hit like a truck.  They were quickly even on abuse taken.

Kelly saw to her chagrin Awesome Tara was laughing.  She was delighted.  The pipsqueak was really trying!  But that loss of focus cost Kelly.  An absolutely massive fist whalloped her, and just as quickly the other caught her neck and she was pinned against the side of the hole.

"That was pretty good little girl.  Shit, I hate to do this to you.  You ain't even crying or begging or nothin', you're still trying to figure out a way to kill me."

Kelly gasped.  "I think... I may have it."

Awesome Tara laughed.  "Well let's see it then!"

And saw it Awesome Tara did.  A sharped pork rib suddenly skewered the big hand holding Kelly's neck.  Another, in Kelly's other hand, went into the side of Awesome Tara's neck, momentarily exposed she reacted to the pain.

Kelly headbutted her opponent twice, caught her doubled over, grabbed her shoulder pads and began to kick her in the stomach.  Three of those brought the giantess down into the sand in the hole, and Kelly proceeded to stomp on the big woman's head as hard and ruthless as she could.

Awesome Tara grabbed one of the broken planks, swung it in a might arc, and coldcocked Kelly right in the temple with it.  Everything went black.

When Kelly woke up, she was back in the usual cage.  Unusually, she was actually bandaged properly.  She just lay there for a while, trying to figure out what happened.

Eventually, Hikida showed up.

"You were out for a while.  You had a concussion.  But you nearly tore a blood vessel in Awesome Tara's neck with your little stunt, so she had to cancel the remaining fights.  Boss was going to throw you into the water, but then he saw the crowd reaction."

Kelly was shocked.  "Boss got me a sawbones?"  That was so out of character for him.

"Oh hell no.  Awesome Tara did, paid Boss enough gate to leave you out of the pit for a couple of weeks.  So you have about another eight days of the easy life.  Boss thought it would build anticipation anyway."

Later, upon exploring her cell, trying to find if anything she'd stashed was still hidden in the straw, she found a message carved in one of the boards in rough, shallow letters.  Since it was all on the same plank, only a single word could be carved on each line.

Good
fite
litle
girl

Kelly's stay in Hedge wouldn't get any better until another fateful day, but she noticed from then on she got a single pork rib every other day in her slop bucket.

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Long drive was long, and Harry wasn't terribly focused today. He kept his attention on the road, not on the chatter over the radio, while also keeping half an eye on their new passenger up front. But mostly, he worried.

He dearly wanted to believe that the entity in Dallas had been just a passing thing, but he couldn't actually make himself believe it. He was concerned. Turk and the convoy were good people, and Harry didn't want to bring trouble to them. Sure, they'd all been nice and supportive about it to his face, but he worried that might not hold up if things actually started going pear-shaped. Harry was a big, meaty cyborg. Not much concerned him when it came down to a straight fight, even if the fight turned sour. He was already dead and walking around in a coffin -- the worst had already happened.

Stuff that played with his mind, though...that unsettled him. He'd lost himself twice. Once when he'd all but been swallowed by the demon in his guts, and once when he'd let himself mostly turn into a machine. And even with him now back firmly in the driver's seat of his brain, he knew he worried people. When his programming kicked in, it made him seem erratic. Sure, there was always a reason for it, but it wasn't like people could always see that. That put a wall between him and most folks, who thought he might go on a rampage or something on a hair trigger, despite his programming being mostly geared towards keeping him from rampages.

But he coped with that. He had a place of balance, where he could function most of the time without worry.

Some new entity trying to play with his brain messed with that. And he had no idea how to fight it. He wasn't any good with stuff he couldn't touch. So thoughts and worries gnawed at him as he drove, and he asked Fletcher to take the wheel for a bit when Turk called for one of their brief stops. He normally wasn't keen to shut down...bad associations. But right now, he craved a little vacation in the silent dark.

((OOC: So, a Drive roll with a -1 penalty for Fatigue, +2 for Harry's datalink, nets me a +1 on my Drive.

10:35, Today: Rusty Harry rolled 8,9 using d8+1,d6+1, rerolling max with rolls of 7,(6+2)8.  Driving.

I will gratefully let Fletcher take the wheel to clear the Fatigue when I shut down for a bit.))

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Normally Fletcher spent his downtime tinkering with one thing or another.  There was always the general maintenance and upkeep on his everyday equipment that needed doing, and when that was done, some idea or another for something to be worked on to see if he could make it function.

Today though was a bit of a different day.  After the night before he'd be the first to admit he was feeling a bit tuckered out.  So once the Dog was rolling and the first few miles had passed, he closed his eyes and took a nap.

Eventually the convoy came to a stop and Fletcher woke up, stretched his legs, and found Kelly so she could check his stietches.

Once he got the doc's OK, he then took a turn behind the wheel so Harry could catch a little sleep, or whatever exactly he did that was near enough equivalent for that to be as good a name for it as any.

Fletcher wasn't as proficient as Harry was behind the wheel, even with two hands, but he could keep it on the road and at the speeds they were travelling and with the Dog being what it was, he didn't have the time of it he knew some of the other convoy members were having.

So he kept it on what passed for the straight and narrow now and kept the radio tuned to 19 so he could read the mail as he drove.

He wasn't a ratchet jawed channel hog but eventually he did contribute a little something as people were swapping stories of a certain nature.

"Old timer back home used ta say, heart wants, what the heart wants, 'n that's 'bout as close ta love as anythin' else in this world.

"So while we got a bit a straight road, lemmee tell you 'bout Millie.  You don't often think you'll run in ta your first love doin' somethin' as mundane as scavin' 'bout, but some folks still keepin' the faith say everythin' happens for a reason 'n while I ain't a believer, let's just say I maybe hedge my bets a little by not botherin' ta argue with 'em.

Poor Millie was all alone.  Abandoned.  Survivin', but things weren't great, even s'far as that bar been lowered accordin' ta what I've been told.

So Millie comes home with me, 'n I'm in a state.  Can't think of much else, bein' young 'n such, so I steal every moment I can 'n we hole up in an old shed whenever I can get 'way with it.  'Course I do my best, but I'm eager 'n fumblin' 'n all thumbs 'bout a whole lot of what needed doin'.  Can't really say how old Millie was then, but I do my best, 'n 'ventually I maybe start gettin' right more 'n I get wrong.

Wasn't easy though.  Plenty a cursin', bit a blood, tears even if I'm bein' honest, but in the end I ain't 'shamed ta admit she taught a young boy a whole lot, 'n I wouldn't be where I am today without that experience.  Eventually I learned right 'n boy she'd hum so sweet ta let me know I was doin' good.  It was a magical time while it lasted.

'Course 'bout two years later she let the smoke out 'n burned up so bad the casement even turned ta slag on account of a pretty rough solar array I'd wired in, but I ain't had a better arc welder since."

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Banshee Dreams - Harry, Kelly, Dean, Prudence, Syb

Sergeant Pru Travers and another grunt were setting one of the last surviving MULWWVs, or Mule, vehicles up in the center of the ranch yard.  Giving the M2 machine gun mounted in the back a clear field of fire wherever the breach happened.  And it would happen...

A young medic was doing everything she could (which wasn't much) for the wounded that had managed to make it into the momentary safety of this fortified ranch.  Despite uniform regulations, she had a bright red scarf wrapped around her neck and the tails whipped around violently in the perpetual wind.

That syker sniper, Mitchel was it?, had managed to get himself up on the barn roof.  He used the scope on his rifle to scan beyond the wall.  The barrel of his rifle paused, aimed at the northwest corner of the yard.  He braced into a firing position and yelled, "HERE THEY COME!"

WELCOME BACK TO BANSHEE!

Harry and Kelly - Smarts check to lead off.  Succeed and you realize this is a dream...and you've been here before...  Which would allow you to react/think as your normal HoE selves.

Fletcher - You are Not Appearing In This Dream Sequence.  You can feel free to join in as any random grunt or EXFOR tech, a syker, etc.  You can play Pru if you like.  You can kick back and enjoy reading the show.  Whatever it is, Fletcher's Banshee Avatar is /NOT HERE/.

If you do choose Pru, her stats are listed in the I'm a Survivor Thread.  Feel free to roll Smarts (No Wild Die, she's an Extra now)

Harry looked around. Yup. This was what he'd been afraid of...

But hey, at least he had an answer now. Whatever this thing was that was sending this, it was still following after them.

Let's see...no breach yet. And what was that about a ruin? Harry tried to think back, using the moments of quiet they had left to try and figure out what his dream-self knew that his waking self didn't, even as he braced himself for the breaking of the barricade.

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

One of the other sykers with the group paused as they were rushing to positions.  She eyed Kelly in that cold, distant way only sykers could, "Again and again, till we're dead.  We took what we shouldn't..... "  Another syker grabbed the first, "Shut the fuck up and get in position, Nillson!"  They moved off...

Harry tried to think...back?  Accessing memories he doesn't have of a life he's never lived.  And somehow it works...  He "remembers."  Flashes of his unit, Cy-SOG 3rd, being assigned to protect a syker detachment for a top secret mission.  Something about miners finding something.  An underground city....sleeping...waiting.  The memory point of view kept getting mixed up.  Sometimes he was seeing the mobilization as one of the Cy-SOG....other times the point of view was one of the sykers.  He caught a glimpse of the syker's unit insignia, Black Lightning.  It was all very disorienting, flipping back and forth....

The northwest corner of the ranch wall disappeared in a sudden, violent explosion.  Troopers and concrete scattered across the yard.  Nillson screamed and grabbed her head.  Other sykers joined the agonized chorus.

They were coming.

It Was Coming.

Of course Connor was there, hanging at the Ranger....no, Templar's hip.  The Ranger duster faded away, leaving a tattered tabard with a red Maltese cross...

Tick....tick....  Your go, Harry! After this, you we go to the Quick Encounter round.

Episode Three - Baggage

The half-memories swirled around him and he tried to latch on to details. The explosion didn't help, but suddenly he heard a shouting.

"Yo!" He shouted above the din. "Black Dog! Represent!"

He kept an eye out for the thrower with the spear that could pierce metal, drawing his shotgun (yay, it was there!) and keeping it at the ready. Maybe he could interrupt it this time...

Episode Three - Baggage

The world quickly started to turn upside down with that breach in the wall.  Those big, purple-skinned alien riders on the huge lizard-horse-monsters rampaged into the breach.  One of the beasts reared and laid into an infantryman with huge scything claws, tearing through the armored battlesuit like a candy wrapper.  The rider drew back a stone-tipped spear.  And the stone began to glow....

More were coming, screaming out of the hazy dusklight.

Sgt. Travers cut loose with the .50 cal.  The big machine gun chattered and spit heavy lead death into the breach.  One of the massive lizard monsters reared up, almost like it was trained to take the hit.  These rounds did not bounce off, punching through the beast's black stone breastplate.  The barrage forced the howling aliens to spread and scatter.  But they didn't stop...  wouldn't stop.

It was coming.

Choose your Skill!  Make your roll!  The situation is still a very desperate, last stand situation so I will leave it at -4.  But, your Fatigue penalty is canceled by your Realization of Self Bonus.  So that's cool...right?

I do need a clear goal or intention to how you engage in the encounter.  Survive?
Change it?  Rescue?  Escape?  Something else?

Success - Fatigue, Raise - Unscathed, Fail - Wound /and/ Fatigue, Crit Fail - d4 Wounds /and/ Fatigue

Kelly took her sword, and sat in the lotus position.  Or as close as she could get anyway.  Sword in hand, she pulled out her rosary.

"Speak the truth to each other, and render true and sound judgment in your courts; do not plot evil against each other, and do not swear falsely."

This whole situation was a lie, a brutal lie worthy of Satan himself.  Kelly prayed for truth.

Right. Maybe you will be useful for something, you stupid chip. Harry thought to himself as he braced for the fight. He had a data link, and they'd just finished making a spirit radio. If he could record what he'd learned here, they might have more to go on when it all passed...

...but it was not to be, as while he was distracted trying to come up with his message, he was jerked back to reality by a glowing stone-tipped spear, which cut straight through his armor and pinned him to the wall...

((OOC: Alright, so here goes the Smarts check.

Does my Datalink help mitigate any of the penalty? If so, then that reduces the penalty to -2 instead of the full -4, but I'm going to roll at -4 right now just in case the answer is no. I'm probably going to have to burn chips on this anyhow...

15:57, Today: Rusty Harry rolled -3,-3 using d8-4,d6-4, rerolling max with rolls of 1,1.  Smarts.

Well, that was painful. Harry grunted, though, and kept focused on his task, encoding a short message to imprint on his chip.

Banshee. Sykers on secret mission. Someone found something in underground city & took it, causing anger. Syker unit had black lightning patch. Whatever has latched on to us wants to punish us for sins of others or compel us to find & return whatever "it" is, probably.

((OOC Alrighty, so it looks like I can do some chipping, so I'ma definitely chipping.

17:05, Today: Rusty Harry rolled -2,-1 using d8-4,d6-4, rerolling max with rolls of 2,3.  white chip. Much better than last time, but still not enough, even if I get the bonus from my Datalink. So I'll toss a Blue Chip at it.

17:06, Today: Rusty Harry rolled 4 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4.  Blue Chip.

That becomes a Total of 3.

Marshal, do I get the bonus from my Datalink? Because that makes that a success. Otherwise, I'll have to toss a red chip at it, too.))

Episode Three - Baggage

The storm of lead from the big .50 blunts the charge of the anouks through the breach.  The native warriors backpedal away for a moment. Another chanouk and rider, charge past the hail of fire to the side.  The beast's claws dig into the side of the ranch house as it climbs around.  The rider howled and hurled a glowing discus of black stone, edges razor sharp.  It whirled in and slashed low across Sgt. Travers back.  She bent back and growled in pain, "Supercaligoddamnmotherfuckshitdamn..."

Harry had backed away from the main charge, trying to access his own internal computer systems.  The AI, as usual, was not making it easy.  But he was managing to stay out of the worst of it...

Kelly...sat down...  In the midst of the vicious, howling chaos of the fight, she sat down.  She closed her eyes.  She prayed.  Somehow, the whole battle just seemed to flow around her.  Like a rock in a stream.  Unmoved.

The medic did her best to keep helping the wounded into the shelter of the barn.  A huge anouk warrior had made it through the barrage and found easy targets.  The medic spun around, her red scarf snapping in the wind, and set herself to defend the doorway with her bare hands if need be.  The alien warrior ducked to the side of her punch and smashed the back of his fist into her side.  The medic was lifted off her feet, only to crash into the dirt.  The blackstone spear glowed as he stepped in amongst the wounded...

Glowing spears of tannis and the claws of the huge chanouk lizards began to do their bloody work...

Dean's rifle swung on something new coming across the grassland beyond the wall.

Harry saw the horrid alien thing fly up to the rooftop position Dean had been sniping from.  He watched as the thing lifted Dean with a wave of a withered hand, pulling the syker closer.  Closer.  Harry watched Dean's eyes go black...

"GANKANAAR!"

Harry had requested Fletcher take over for a leg in the second half of the day so he could try to get some Downtime(tm).  While the big cyborg was shutdown, fatigue seemed to get to Syb as well.  It was a long and boring day of driving.  Everything seemed to be going okay.  Even Kelly, eventually, nodded off for a bit...

But it doesn't last very long.  Even though they had drifted off at different times, the three suddenly woke back up.  It was a jarring snapping back to reality wort of waking up.  Escaping a nightmare.

Syb suddenly cried out in surprised pain and fear.  Her breathing hissed as she sucked air back in and her hand went to her side.

Annnnnd, we're back!  Kelly and Harry are now at Fatigue Level 2 (-2).

Fletcher, make a quick Drive roll as Syb comes back to screaming wakefulness all of a sudden.  It had been such a nice, quiet drive....

Episode Three - Baggage

Fletcher had been staring ahead looking for debris and potholes even the Dog couldn't handle, with one ear listening to the banter on the radio.

When the new girl woke screaming, Fletcher jerked the wheel.  "Holy hell!"  He exclaimed as he caught himself and brought the rig back in line.  Luckily even a machine like the Dog didn't have snap steering at the speeds they were going so Fletcher's mostly adequate skills were enough.

He slowed down anyway before sparing a look towards the girl to see what the matter was with her.

Fletcher rolled 3,4.  Drive.

Harry, meanwhile, let out a long groan. He felt even worse than ever, and that was not good.

He'd been right, so at least they had some clarity. He struggled to remember the dream, even as it began to fade...and saw the message he'd written for himself.

Okay. That worked. They now had something to go on.

"I need to talk with Dean." he said after reviewing the message. "He's the only one of us that might help unravel this, unless we run across any other Sykers." He scowls. "I was right. The damn thing from Dallas has latched on to us."

He frowns. "And we need to check on Crowboy, Pru, and the new kid. Mateo, I think his name was? Because they got missed last time, but might not've this time."

"Well, shit.  Figured we'd have that sort'a luck."  Fletcher cursed.

He got on the radio and let the convoy know they would be stopping for 30 seconds.  Fletcher reasoned it would be easier than having Harry fall off the truck, since the Dog wasn't equipped with the extra structure to let people shimmy between the cab and the trailer with any real ease.

Turk radioed back, "Copy that, Black Dog.  We'll back 'em down and let you catch back up.  Can't leave that back door swinging for long.  You need longer? There's a decent stopover coming up in fifteen.  We'll 10-100.  Over."

While the radio chattered and Fletcher tried to gear the truck down to a quick stop, Syb quickly acquiesced to Kelly's orders.  Her rough poncho is pulled aside and she tries to lift her shirt, but quickly finds that far too painful.  She doesn't resist Kelly doing whatever was needful to check out the damage though, "What...  what... was that?  Where?"  A lot of questions.  A lot of pain.  Kelly was able to quickly assess some major blunt force trauma; probably nothing broken, probably a lot bruised and battered.  As its all internal, its mostly guesswork and experienced instinct.

Fletcher was able to bring the big Dog to a halt soon after; though the truck just did not seem to want to stop.  Temperamental.  As soon as Harry stepped down, he could see Crowboy and Mateo rushing up the flatbed towards the camper.  From which could be heard a string of colorful, literary, wide-ranging exclamations of pain and unhappiness with whatever the fuck just happened.  Sounded like Pru.

Once he stepped down, he looked at Crowboy and Mateo. "What's the situation from your end? Dean? Pru?"

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

The crew of the Dog quickly went to work under Harry and Kelly's direction.  The whole procedure does take a few minutes.  Its longer than originally considered, but things happen.  Terrible, horrible, nightmarish things happen all the time really.  A small delay surely wouldn't be that bad....  Surely...

Mateo was easily wrangled into helping get Syb down from the cab on the makeshift stretcher.  Its not easy and did not sound particularly comfortable for Syb.  There was no way out of there in which she could stay flat and avoiding bending her damaged midsection.

Kelly found Crowboy in the camper doing his best to help push some raggy cloths against Pru's bleeding back.  It was a long deep slice across.  Like a sword cut or something very like that.  Which all feels unlikely as she had been asleep and there were no ninjas around in the tiny camper shell.

Dean lay on the other bunk.  He was...not awake...  But maybe not asleep.  His whole body seemed tensed up.  Almost shaking.  His skin sheened with sweat.  His eyes are shut tight.  He is muttering and groaning.  The only word that can be picked out as a word is, "no..."  That he is whispering a lot.

Here are my assumptions, based on what was said:
-Everyone but Fletcher is on the trailer.
-Fletcher is still driving and now in the cab alone.
-Dean, Syb, and Pru are in the camper.  Most likely with Kelly and Crowboy tending.
-Harry and Mateo are on the trailer but outside the camper.  Its damn crowded in there at this point.

All that sound about right?

KELLY!  Healing checks for Prudence and Syb.  -2 for Fatigue.  Extra's don't technically have wound levels for other penalties and she has Crowboy to assist anyhow.  Not much she can see needing tending on Dean, make a Notice (-2 for Fatigue) though.

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

One of the nice things about Harry's link with the Dog was that he could use it to talk on the radio, too. "Fletcher," he said as they got Syb situated. "We're ready to roll on now. Hope we can make up the time to get to the Convoy's stop point before they get too antsy...keep your eyes peeled for problems, though. New Kid and I'll keep watch back here in case of unfriendlies. Keep me posted about whatever you see or hear on the horn."

Harry clutched the edge of the trailer. He could still feel the phantom puncture of the spear, and he was even more tired than ever. That was not good. He looked over at Mataeo as they got rolling.

"Alright, so I promised you an explanation. Here's what we know. Last night, as we were laying over in Dallas, most of us here had a weird dream. You know about Faraway? That alien system they discovered before The Last War? Well, some weird psychic thing scooped us up while we slept and dropped us into someone's memory of a last stand. When we woke up, some of use were pretty hurt...wounds we took while asleep popped up on us. I'd hoped whatever it was that had happened was just some weird fuckery from the Dallas Maelstrom, but apparently not. It got me, Kelly, Fletcher, and Dean last time 'round, but not Crowboy or Pru. It got Pru this time, though, and not Fletcher. And it looks like it got Syb, too." he sighs. "I'm sorry, kid. I didn't know she'd be in danger ridin' with us. Whatever this thing it, it's got a hate on for Dean, likely because he'd fought in the war on Faraway. Now, this is just a theory, but I don't think it can get at you or Crowboy. The rest of us...well, we're all a little special. I'm a demon-powered dead man in a can. Dean can do stuff with his brain. Fletcher can talk to tech spirits. Kelly's got the touch of God with her. I don't know what Pru's deal is. And Syb's some sort of sensitive, looks like. Oh, and the Black Dog is haunted. I'm going to need to try and get in touch with The Driver and see if he's seen this thing, being a ghost and all." He sighs. "So, do you have any questions that need answering?"

Well, let's try to do something for Pru since that's a nasty cut:

Kelly was not able to do much beyond getting the three "casualties" in safe enough position to travel.  And hopefully not keep bleeding all over the camper.  Point being, they were as safe as Kelly could make them to travel on to at least the next stopover.

Meanwhile, Mateo listened to Harry's "explanation" of the state of affairs on the truck.  His eyes got a little wide as he tried to take it all in.  "Well... okay,"  Mateo began, brow creasing as he tried to put some thought to all that he'd been told, "So... There may be some kinda psychic thing that got you in Dallas...  It goes after, like, special types, but not always..."  He stopped for a moment and looked at the truck, then shrugged, "Yeah, the truck being haunted makes sense, though."  He looked back at the camper again, obviously wanting to be there instead of here talking about confusing shit with a dead man.

"Well...  I dunno, man...  I don't know anything about this stuff.  All I know is, Crow and I traded out with Pru and that Dean guy at the last stopover.  So they could take the camper and grab z's, y'know?.  We were sitting with the big gun and watchin' back for a long while.  Then Pru was screamin' and the truck was stoppin'.  Now Syb's hurt and it don't sound like you know much about stoppin' whatever the fuck this is."

Episode Three - Baggage

Having done what could be done to get the three victims, the Black Dog, under Fletcher's direction, rolled on again.  The scout that had fallen back to assist/watch over moved out as well.  The Dog had little trouble catching back up to the convoy.  What with being in supernaturally perfect shape, it handled these old broken down roads better than than the patched together rigs.

The stopover turned out to be an old weigh station.  Not having much for anyone to need in the aftermath, the station was mostly left alone and forgotten.  It was probably closed on The Day anyway.  The scouts have set up picket posts to watch over the approaches while the convoy takes care of what's needful.

The Dog rolled in to join the rest of the parked trucks.  The other drivers and crews looked up from whatever quick tasks they were trying to accomplish, a mix of curiosity... and worry...

No doubt his urgency did little to assuage whatever worries the rest of the convoy was forming.

Episode Three - Baggage

Kelly had went through a hard day of being useless while people around her were dying.  If there was anyone encamped here, she had to trudge out and see if there was anyone else, either a hedge-doctor like her, or someone with some actual medical know-how who could do anything.

Episode Three - Baggage

"Kelly!"  Fletcher called as the templar crossed his path going in the opposite direction.

"You wanna fill me in on stuff 'fore you stagger off wherever yer goin?"  He asked.

She looked rather worse for wear now.  Either whatever she'd been doing on the trailer with the injured girl had wore her down or it had been that way for a while and Fletcher just hadn't noticed, which wasn't too far afield in terms of possibility.

"Ugh.  Where to begin.  Another one of those dreams.  Honestly, I think if anyone understands it at this point... it's Harry.  We got wounded, and I feel like trash, I haven't been able to do anything for anyone.  I'm going to see if anyone else around here has anything to offer in terms of supply or expertise."  Kelly answered, wanting to rush off, but also not wanting to rush off.

Episode Three - Baggage

Fletcher nodded then held up a finger in a 'one moment' gesture.

He dug about in his pockets and came up with a spanner, and stuck one of the glowing discs he usually attached to people's weapons on it though it seemed to be glowing more purple than blue.  With practiced efficiency he produced some bare copper wire and wrapped it around the wrench, entangling a few capacitors as he went.

Holding up the spanner he gently placed the open end of the wrench against her temple just so, making contact with the two points of metal at the one end.  There was a click followed by a high pitched whine of a rather short duration before Kelly felt an energizing jolt flow through her.

Fletcher peered at the woman cautiously for a moment, then gave the wrench a little flip and stuck it in his pocket, obviously pleased that whatever terrible thing might have gone wrong just now, did not.

"Feel any better?"  He asked.

Spending 1 Gadgeteer use to create a 5PP device with the Succor power.

Fletcher rolled 4,2 using 1d8,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,2.  Success, 5 components spent.

Using Device on Kelly.  Fletcher rolled 7,2 using 1d8,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 7,2.

Episode Three - Baggage

Mateo's conversation with Harry was....light.  He had a lot of things to worry about, not just Syb.  The road noise on the trailer was loud.  And, frankly, at the end of the day, Harry was a huge, scary undead machine-man.  I mean really scary, even if you got to know him...  He's just.  A lot.

Mateo did brave a few questions probably.  Is Kelly a doctor?  Is she a /good/ doctor?  I mean, like really good?  She's gonna help Syb, right?  Where'd you get this truck, anyhow?

The truck parked and growled to quietude.  When Kelly had exited the camper and hopped down, Mateo rushed over to the camper to try and peek in.  Crowboy gave him a quick attempt at reassurance.  Syb weakly waved to him.  Prudence muttered, "Marcus Aurelius can suck an egg!  I rejected it and still fucking hurts..."

Spying Mateo, Kelly put him to work.  "Hey, you.  Help me canvas the area, see if anyone camped nearby has any medical supplies or expertise.  I don't think we're past this crap and I need any advantage I can get."

She kept it simple and direct.

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Harry answers Mateo thusly:

quote:
Is Kelly a doctor?

"She's got medical training, and she gets on right with the Lord." He considers Mataeo, who grew up post-Judgement Day. His standards for what he'd call a Doctor were probably lower than what Harry thought of, even after all these years. Harry left it there.

quote:
Is she a /good/ doctor?  I mean, like really good? She's gonna help Syb, right?

Harry shrugs. "She will do absolutely everything she can to help." He says, without confirming or denying anything. In Harry's opinion, Kelly was about as good a doctor as most people could rightly expect, under the circumstances, but again his standards were verrrrry outdated.

quote:
Where'd you get this truck, anyhow?

"Same way you get most things, these days. We found it, at an old truck stop in Arkansas. I think whoever was driving the Dog before we claimed it got kilt by the spook juice monster thing we fought at the place where we found it; we were just lucky enough to escape with our lives."

Harry followed Mataeo, though he didn't try to enter the cabin. Instead, he kept a weary eye out on the area, trying his best to keep watch.

Fletcher grinned and nodded to Kelly, then kept moving towards the trailer as she tried to rope in the new guy to help her in her search.

Meanwhile Fletcher tried to see how bad off the rest of the folks who'd been asleep were.  He didn't know that he could help, but Kelly suggested he might, so he at least felt he should take a look at things.

Fletcher's look inside the trailer would show him Syb and Prudence laid out.  Syb seems quiet and still, unsurprisingly.  Prudence is quite a bit more vulgar and talkative in her tired, pained discomfort.  She's laid out on her stomach, with her back covered in bandaging strips, already reddening.

Dean is another matter.  He doesn't look hurt, but tense... Almost shivering.  His head twitching side to side.  Muttering.  His eyes flicking back and forth beneath his eyelids.  A man asleep without rest.

Notice for Fletcher.  And Harry.

Fletcher stared at the injured trio for a long moment.

He'd been full of optimism a few moments ago but it seemed as soon as the reality of the situation hit him he realized he didn't much have any idea how he could lend a hand.

Turning to look at Harry he wondered if the borg had any idea.  Maybe he'd gotten a crash course in what might amount to first aid, even if it was just intended to help him kill folks better.

Suddenly remembering something, Fletcher pulled the wrench based machine he'd cobbled together from his pocket.

"I uh, tossed this here thing together for Kelly.  Gave her a bit of a jolt to try 'n shake the dust off that was weighin' her down.  Seemed ta do the trick.  Dunno how yer feelin', but the battery has a bit more juice in it if you think it'd help you or someone else."  He suggested.

Harry felt faintly ridiculous at being gently touched in the head with a wrench, and was sure it looked incredibly odd to anyone looking at them. But damn if he didn't feel worlds better.

"Hot damn, I needed that. Thank you." He says as the fog from his head clears. He uses his free hand to rub his brow. "We could try that on Dean, if there's any juice left." He looks back over. "I'm worried. Does he seem to have lost weight to you? Because there was this...thing in the dream. I think he called it a 'Skinny.' And both times this happened, it went right for him."

Fletcher looked pleased the device seemed to work.

Looking over at Dean, Fletcher nodded.

"Should be a few more charges left.  I dunno if he's lookin' thinner.  Dunno much 'bout that dream stuff neither.  If we was closer ta back home I could get some answers maybe, but I think we're stuck unless we figure things out."

Fletcher walked over to Dean's side and gave him a closer look as he rubbed a thumb over the wrench based device in his hand.

"It'd be good ta try 'n figure what's the common factor 'bout who gets stuck in that dream.  I slept this mornin' while you were drivin' for a bit 'n was fine.  Dunno if anyone else was asleep at that point, so maybe it's a numbers thing?  Have ta have a certain amount of folks sleepin' at the same time or somethin'."

Fletcher charged up the device and then decided to follow Harry's suggestion and see if it would help.

Fletcher rolled 4,20.  Device

If it was going to do anything, that should do it.

Episode Three - Baggage

It doesn't take long for Kelly to find some likely help.  In fact, it was heading her way.  That always makes things easier.  The potential help took the form of Turk, along with "Reefer Man."  The quick ask about medical attention got the "Reefer Man" to give a shout back to his rig.

"MAYTAG!  911!"

Turk explained, while indicating they should continue on to the Black Dog, "He's one of our medics.  Used to drive ambulances.  Walk and talk?  What happened?"  Turk started to head off to the Dog with that natural leader way that indicated this conversation was moving.  Reefer Man waited for Maytag to get his go-bag and the pair followed after.

The rest of the convoy crews continued to take care of things and not try to find reasons to swing close...catch a bit of information...  Or at least not be too obvious about it.

The fact he was growling at Dean was about the only thing that kept his work boots where they were and not beating a real fast rhythm for the door.

So, quietly the mechanic waited to see what Dean was about to do.  He'd heard a lot of rumors about Sykers, which meant he had no idea what Dean was capable of if he decided he really was not liking Harry at the moment.

Rusty Harry:
"That's right. You don't." Harry says firmly. He kicked up the electronic growl of his voice box, too. "The Skinny grabbed you. Did something to you. And yet, here you are. If I'm not answering your questions, there's a damn good reason for it. So sit your ass back down, Sargent, while we try to suss out just what it is that's going on."

Dean's eyes widened at the tone.  He even flinched back a bit.  Then training seemed to kick it.  Emotions locked down.  Expression blanked.  The former Psychic Legionnaire settled calmly back onto the bed and turned his eyes front.  Looking at the other wall of the camper.  Or at least in that direction.

Pru flinched back as well, even if she wasn't the target of it.  Something about a mass of dead flesh and metal taking a commanding tone tends to put folk in check.  She muttered, "Shit...  wrong Harry..."

Syb did everything she could to be uninteresting, small, and unnoticed in her spot on the floor between the cots.  This camper suddenly felt very...very small...

Kelly MacLeod:
"Oh I savvy, I'm not that clueless about medicine.  But we might not have a choice, I don't think we can keep doing this.  It's like..."  Kelly looked for something to compare it to, and came up with the obvious.  "It's like pit fighting every day.  It doesn't matter how good you are, if you do it every day injuries compound sooner than later."

She pondered this aloud.  "Maybe if everyone but me took one..."

Turk looked like he wanted to ask about the mention of pit fighting, but had been out in the wastes long enough to know you didn't ask.  Folk wanted to talk, they talked.  He stayed focused on the issue at hand, "Why not you?  Seems like you need to be just as sharp?"

Turk, Kelly, Reefer...Robert, and Maytag were close enough to the Dog now for words.  So Turk used some, with volume enough to get attention, "Hey Harry!  Your crew here says you got injured,  Brought help."

That was a rare thing for Kelly, she normally didn't use fancy pre-War words like erstwhile.  Generally didn't know many of them.

Re: Episode Three - Baggage

Harry nods as Dean retakes his seat, feeling rather shitty for having to go the "angry dead man" route. He sighs with relief when he hears Turk calling out. "Back here, Turk!" he shouts. "Door's not locked!"

He keeps his gaze on Dean as he moves to allow folk to get past him. "Sounds like the Cavalry's here. Let them give you a look over. Once you've been treated, we can discuss all the weird shit that's been going on, and I'll tell you what I know about the situation. Sound good?"

He suspected that whatever was happening with Dean, this wasn't part of his original tour of duty on Banshee. His hypothesis was that whatever had happened that day had happened to the Syker who'd been grabbed by the Skinny. Maybe it had planted some sort of psychic parasite in them. Then the poor bastard had gotten back to Earth, died around Dallas, and their ghost had been hanging around looking for something to latch on to before finding...Dean? The Dog? A group of people with enough mojo to sustain it? He still wanted to contact The Driver and see if he'd detected anything weird, it just had never seemed like an opportune moment to do so.

Dean stays very still and very quiet.  Just sitting.  Staring.  Waiting patiently, as ordered.

With Harry having cleared the way, Maytag squeezed into the little camper.  He looks over the three and settled on starting with Prudence.  The problem there seems obvious and she's the furthest from creepy Dean.

Reefer Man climbed up to the little camper.  He made a few more adjustments to what looked to be mostly an old, military grade Geiger counter crossed with a cracked old smartphone, and possibly a microwave.  He first waved the sensor at himself.  It crackled and beeped.  He made a made a few taps on the touchscreen.  Waved at himself again. Crackle-beep. Satisfied, Reefer began waving the sensor probe at each of the Black Dog's crew.  Crackle-beeeeep-beeeeeep.  Tap-tap.

Episode Three - Baggage

Robert made a few more adjustments before answering Fletcher.  He absently rattled off an odd range of frequencies and modulations, adding by way of explanation, "The Targ Range.  Or so I was told..."  There was a pattern developing in the junker's scanning.  Scan Dean....scan a Dog...back to Dean...  Repeat.  Move on.  Always back to Dean between.

Dean remained creepily motionless throughout, just staring at the far wall.

Robert continued to explain, "We had a syker travel with us once.  Teagan.  Said she served with the Brain Dogs.  Syker experimenters or something.  I asked a lot of questions.  Anyway..."  Crackle-beeeeep.  Adjust, "Sorry.  Anyway, after what Harry told us this morning, I started thinking back to some of what she showed me...  Tracing syker frequencies and such.  Traces get left behind.  And it looks like..."  Adjustment.  Recheck.  "It looks like you folks have all the trace prints of syker influence...  Since you got a Syker around and all, made sense I guess.  But, what's weird is..."  He scanned Dean again, "There's more than one trace signature.  One of 'em is really weird too."  He paused, then looked sheepishly at Fletcher as he admitted, "I mean...  Weirder...  This stuff is all weird, frankly, and I'm not gonna say I really /understand/ it.  But it's that weird one that you all have gotten whammied by."  He nods at Dean, "Except him.  He reads with both."

"Figure it's a ghost in the machine then?"  Fletcher suggested.  Wasn't so far fetched an idea given the tractor sitting not too far away from them.

Episode Three - Baggage

"He ain't talkin' because I put the fear of God into him just before you guys arrived." Harry says. "The way he was talkin' earlier, it sounded like he didn't really know where he was -- seems to think he's still on Banshee and we're part of his outfit." He shakes his head. "Or maybe not his original outfit, but the outfit we keep seeing in this dream." Seemed like everyone was here, so he figured it was time to tell them what he'd gathered. "There was a Syker unit in the dream, wore a black lightning patch. The dream we keep having is of a last stand. This regiment the Sykers with the black patch we're part of took 'something' -- I still ain't clear on what -- from an underground Anouk city, which apparently riled up the whole mess of 'em to chase us down and kill us. It starts looking like the tide might, might turn for a few moments...then this badass Anouk Syker called a 'skinny' shows up, and any remaining resistance crumbles. The last thing I saw before I woke up this time was the Skinny pull Dean closer with its powers, then his eyes go black, and then there's this word...it sounds like someone gargling rocks." He tries to remember the word. "I think it went something like 'GANKANAAR', or leastways that's the best I can pronounce it. I think I heard it the other time, too, only I was already dead in the dream, so I wasn't perceiving much."

He looked over at Dean. "You get all that, soldier? You're Earthside, long way from Banshee."

Kelly leaned in and offered up her thought.

"I thought we might stop it by refusing to believe in the scenario.  It's easy for me, I have no concept of any of it so it's not real to me.  Too young."  She chuckled.  She didn't feel young.  "That's why I thought drugging everyone but me might be the play, I could just refuse to go along with the scenario and break it.  I tried it last time, but unless everyone is of the same will I don't think it will work, and I don't think Dean can resist it, through not fault of his own.  It's too real to him, because he has the opposite situation.  For him it's more than real."

When Harry said the word again, a few things happened.

Dean's face went rigid.  His eyes widened....and darkened at the edges.  Like a black...something...was trying to reach across.  His brow twitched, trying to knit in fierce concentration.

Robert's eyes went a little wide as well while he watched.  Though probably for different reasons.  He glanced at his gizmo, made a quick adjustment, and aimed the sensor again at Dean, "Wow...  The other signal...  Levels spiked all over the place when you said it...whatever that word is..."

The blackness began to pull back from Dean's eyes and he spoke, voice tight, "Name...  Its a....name.  Its name."

Kelly didn't know what to tell Dean, but something did come to mind.

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.  A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted.  A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to gain, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

"Your time of war has passed Dean, save for the metaphorical war we all fight now.  For good or for ill you are exactly where you are supposed to be, here and now.  But what is happening is someone, something, is compelling you to be otherwise.  The question is, do we follow it, or defy it?"

Episode Three - Baggage

Dean kept pushing down whatever the thing in his head was, battling it back down into a corner of his mind.  Being a syker, he actually has training in this kind of thing and is likely paying attention to the conversation.  His opinions on the plans, he keeps to himself.

Robert, though, was much more open with his opinion.  In fact, he was looked like he was getting a little excited about the problem.  Some people just like puzzles, "Dive back in?  Maybe we could use the...uh...Psycho-Disruptor we were discussing.  Weaken it at the right time, maybe?  Distract it?"

Turk had kept his tongue up to now, but he was starting to get a little antsy.  He pulled up a sleeve to reveal a wristful of watches.  Whatever he saw there didn't help.  He raised a hand, "Alright.  Alright.  Obviously this here is a concern and important.  I'm all for helpin'.  But, unless you can pull all this off in the next two minutes we gotta call time-out.  We've already sat still longer'n I'm comfortable...."

As if on cue, the walkie hanging on Turk's belt squawked, "All Drivers...  Smoke on the Water.  I repeat.  SMOKE ON THE WATER."

Turk grimaced, "Well...  Shit."  He grabbed up the walkie and clicked back, "Ten-Four, Trouble.  OPTIMUS PRIME.  TEN-SIXTY SEVEN.  OPTIMUS PRIME."  Turk looked up to Harry, "All roll out.  Sorry.  Best to get your Sunday Best on.  Large calibers always looked good on ya."

Episode Three - Baggage

All the idle crews begin running for their rigs as the word goes out.  Engines rumble to life.  Smoke belches into the air.  The Black Dog itself, seeming to take notice of the goings on of the convoy, growled to life without being asked.  More specifically, without any driver at the wheel....

Reefer Man clambered awkwardly down and began heading for his rig, "I'll...  I'll find my notes on the syker-tech!  When I can!"

Maytag calmly kept working on his bandaging of Prudence's back.  He just said calmly and quietly, "Almost done."  Obviously someone who knows better than to rush an important job.  No matter what was going on.

Prudence chose not to quip or quote for once, simply gritting her teeth and allowing the work to get finished.  Quietly frustrated that there seemed to be some action afoot which she could do very little about.

Dean stepped out with the others.  He might not know precisely what was going on, but he looked like he had a sense that there were allies and enemies.  Defend the allies, kill the enemy.  Training runs deep.

Turk had been shouting more into the radio conversation, then turned back to the Dogs, "Scouts spotted dust clouds and smoke heading our way.  This areas lousy with the bastards.  No details yet.  We fight on the move.  Make 'em chase us and waste fuel, risk their rides.  Sitting still lets them bunch up."  He points the radio at Harry, "Keep that back door shut.  They shall not pass.  You need back up, call out."

Around this point, Crowboy and Mateo come jogging back up to the rig amidst all the confusion.  Each has a bag with the trades they managed to gather up.  Crowboy, being given responsibility veers off to head for the cab and the lever gun.  The bag will get stowed there.

Mateo hops up on the trailer, stows the bag in the camper and speaks just briefly with Syb.  He then turns back around as though ready to do whatever was needed...

If the enemy were coming up from behind he might be able to be more of a help to those at the back fighting them off.

So resigned he looked for a good place on the flatbed to situate himself where he might have some cover, or at least a handhold if things got bumpy and swervy.
