"That's right, Ur'ik-sha.  When this fellow came to Ludmila with a story of his blood being drawn for Aztlaner blood rituals and his memory wiped, obviously she was skeptical.  There are a lot of the usual racist anti-Aztlaner tropes in there, right?  But when she found two or three more sources saying the same thing, she came to me with it."

George looks pained.

"No.  Even with the other testimonies, I didn't want to believe it.  It all seemed too crazy - but at the same time, I think I was afraid to believe it.  I didn't want it to be true.  And I was afraid for her, too.  I thought that if I said no, she wouldn't pursue it any further.  Unfortunately she kept going anyway and it got her killed."

Ur'ik-sha jumps in once more, seemingly buying George a moment to clear his throat and hold in tears.

"For those of you who don't know, Ludmila Jimenez was a journalist recently found dead in her apartment, in what Lone Star ruled a suicide.  Many, however, have doubts.   We covered some of them on our show this past Thursday evening."

"It was her murder - and I am now confident it was a murder - that prompted me to investigate further myself."

George adjusts his tie and sits up a little straighter before proceeding.

"I've brought with me proof that Aztechnology is harvesting the blood and essence of low-wage workers they are aggressively hiring through a subsidiary for the purpose of blood magic."  He states this all with the matter-of-factness of a person aware he has no flair for drama, and not trying to fake it.

For her part, Ms. MacDonald does an excellent job feigning surprise at what is clearly a planned and rehearsed revelation.

"Surely for such an extraordinary claim you must have extraordinary proof!"

"Indeed I must... I also have compelling evidence that some of the workers hired by this firm were later murdered and disposed of by the same firm, presumably as their memories started to come back, just as my sources' had.  There is a very good chance all of my sources are now dead."

A moment of uncomfortable dead air follows this statement.

"Rented.  Five minutes of time with the prototype can hardly be considered an investment.  Spent my life savings on that, too."

He reaches down beside his chair and produces a bundle, still wrapped in a bright blue scarf, and sets it on the table between them.

"What you will all see in the simsense recording I'm making available through the Daily News Download's Matrix nodes and their various mirrors, as well as my own, is a glimpse of what it is like to view the astral plane."

"I warn anyone who is excited by that prospect, this will not be pleasant.  Seek out the experimental results that Sim-Soul Research Partners have already published if that's what you're seeking."

He unwraps the obsidian chunk in the middle of the table and you can almost hear the curious murmurs of hundreds of thousands of viewers.

"No, what I am about to show you is proof of blood magic in action and it is not for the faint of heart."

A poor, low-resolution recording of Astral Sight translated and rendered as trideo follows - what you'd expect from translating simsense to video, especially something experimental.

You see video and hear audio from George's perspective.  George confirms the recording is working, then unwraps the bundle.  His vision shifts, and you are staring the tormented greater blood spirit in the face.

In the simsense recording later, you can feel the weight of a very bulky simsense rig on his head, and of the bundle on his lap.  Furthermore, you can feel the very new and unique sensation of tuning in to the astral, and the deep wrongness of the blood spirit.

Even through the poor quality, and without the full mood-enhanced chip experience, you can actually feel the mixed menace and sadness of the blood spirit writhing and crying out inside its black, glassy prison.

"Deeply unsettling."  Ur'ik-Sha once again plays the part of the ignorant questioner.

"Well Ms. MacDonald,"

you get the distinct impression the length of the pause is an embellishment of the recording studio,

"I hired Shadowrunners."

A series of still images appear on the screen, showing the Azzie facility, the truck, the crates, etc.  You should recognize them, because you took them.

You note approvingly that none of them, even from inside the truck, show your faces, and even other minor details that might identify you - clothing labels, shoes, a hand in one case, have been blurred.

The two continue to speak over this montage.

"Yes.  You'll see from the photos the team..." He pauses awkwardly, "My team... that the object I have brought with me was far from the only one.  Sadly the runners did not have the benefit of an experimental manatech Sim-Soul recorder, but I have been told there were dozens if not hundreds of blood spirits in that truck and those crates."

"Correct."  George seems comfortable with the academic interlude.

"Blood spirits by nature do not have a stable existence - their Essence degrades continually with time.  In order to sustain themselves they attack and drain other living beings, usuallly at the behest of their summoner.

"That is one of the most troubling aspects of this case.  By binding the spirit in these... obsidian stones, the summoner responsible has somehow developed a technique to keep them stable."

George huffs out a mirthless chuckle.

"I... honestly have no idea."

He thinks for a silent moment.

"The obsidian, unlike the spirits themselves, or the blood sacrifices that predicate them... can be transported, and stockpiled.  That would imply... scale."

Ur'ik-sha looks genuinely startled now.  Either she's a better actor than you thought, or this part of the interview is beyond the scope of the script.

"One shudders to think what this is really about, yes."  His dry tone actually ends up working for him, here.  For a moment he almost sounds wry and witty, instead of erudite and nervous.

"Fortunately, I am told one of the Shadowrunners with magical ability laid all the blood spirits to rest.  All of them in that truck, anyway.

"And that's just what I plan to do with this one.  The team who recovered it was not under my instructions to do so - I didn't know what was happening, I just asked them to find out, and provide proof. But if I had known, that is what I would have wanted.

"Sadly it will mean laying to rest the last material proof of the tale I've told you today.  At least without advanced, expensive thaumaturgic forensics.

"But, speaking of the truck, as you all already know, it is currently at the bottom of the Puget Sound, just off of pier 39."  He pauses meaningfully, "Where anyone who might wish to prove it can find it."

"I'd love to tell you I'm taking some kind of righteous stand, Ms. MacDonald."  George takes off his glasses, polishes a lens on his shirt.

"I'd love to say, if anything happens to me, it will just vindicate everything I have said. But I don't intend to stick around to take that risk.  I sincerely hope someone will take it from here and hold the feet of those responsible to the fire, but... I know when my part is done."
