Party at Sonnet's
Sonnet's studio is on the tenth floor of a once-nice building in Capitol Hill, a few blocks away from the Elven District. The soft full-spectrum lights make a sudden change in mood coming in from the harsh but dim hallway. The interior is sparsely furnished, but the walls are are hung with dozens of things--art from the surrounding neighborhood, mostly: paintings in a broad assortment of styles, cloth hangings, carvings, masks. A collection of flutes is lovingly displayed on a cheap-but-sturdy wall shelf across from the little stove.

Sonnet purses his lips doubtfully at the metal folding table he's pulled into the middle of the room, then pushes it a few feet further from the cherry wood cabinet before arranging the chairs around it. (He was lucky to be able to borrow three reasonably comfortable armchairs on such short notice, but it would have been nice to score slightly lighter ones.) He pushes his own leather chair from its place in the corner. Upside of shitty floors--can't frag them up shoving things around. He turns to the cabinet and considers his liquor collection. He isn't sure if anyone will want taengele, but he pulls out the bottle he brought back from his last Tairngire run just in case, setting it next to a Powers gold label he is sure Red will appreciate. The glasses that look so attractive sitting on the cabinet next to the unicorn start to look absurdly fancy on the table, which probably has some potential as a metaphor, but it's not as if anyone will mind. He flurries about setting out the snacks he bought, makes sure there's water ready to start in the electric kettle, dithers for a few minutes on what music to put on before deciding not to start any just yet, and flops across the arms of one of the chairs, nibbling a bit of cheese and waiting for his friends to arrive.

In reply to Sonnet (msg # 2):

Red comes by looking around at Sonnet's place and the effort he made to get enough seating for everyone  … note to self, next time team party at my place, she thinks but just gives Sonnet a big hug and moves over to the kitchen strip with the real cream and coffee (Atzlan's, well not finest but pretty nice) she splurged on to start making proper Irish coffee for anyone who wants one.

"I hope Pax makes it okay,  I get the sense she doesn't travel around the city so much on her own,  should I have gone and picked her up?" she asks Sonnet

"Hmmm. Possibly." Sonnet is still draped across the chair, though visibly brightened by Red's entrance.
"It's hard to tell what's safe or not, with that one. I feel like some kind of... protective big brother, or some drek. But I mean she's gotten this far somehow. Don't wanna be condescending either, li-ha?"
A few seconds later, his brow furrows. "Dare we cling to the hope she hasn't told seventeen random strangers exactly what she's coming here to celebrate?"

In reply to Sonnet (msg # 4):

"It isn't the random strangers I'm worried about,  they will just want to beat her up and take her credsticks.  For that I'm guessing the big earth spirit she called on before would be helpful.   I'm more worried about the very nice gentleman she meets who wants nothing more than to talk to her about her spirit friends and about how she has been helping all these new spirits lately.  The one in the fancy corp cut suit with the jaguar print scarf"

"like you said, she made it this far, the spirits watch out for fools and drunkards they say" As Red says this she adds a healthy slug of the Powers to her coffee, tops it with the cream, and sits in one of Sonnet's borrowed chairs to take an appreciative sip.  "Cheers bud" she raises the mug in Sonnet's direction

"Is that actual cream? From inside a cow? You are a beautiful, radiant soul." Sonnet gets up and starts fixing himself an Irish coffee, with perhaps a slightly lower percentage of coffee than Red had opted for. "Slainte," he toasts cheekily.

"So. Guess we've got a proper little team now, huh?"

Pax glanced around the building's entrance tentatively, crossing the threshold only to linger awkwardly in the foyer. It was very nice in here! But also, there were a lot of walls. All smooth and straight. And she felt rather out of place in her piecemeal attire, brushing tangled hair out of her face and tromping hesitantly towards the stairs. Were there really people in all these apartments? Somehow, she had imagined Sonnet living at the center of something. Like a seed in a peach, surrounded by admirers. This was rather more linear, and she was afraid someone might come along and ask her to leave.

Pax wasn't really sure if she was allowed to explain that she was visiting Sonnet. First off, there was the whole name business. Beyond which, well maybe Sonnet didn't want people to know he had friends. Well, honestly, there were all sorts of things to worry about here, and Pax did her best to tromp stealthily down the hallways, having to drop a flight after taking a wrong turn, before pausing at the aforementioned threshold.

Unless she was wrong. Maybe she remembered it wrong? She probably should have asked Pariya for help, since she'd never been to this part of town, but then the bird spirit would want to come to the party as well and Pax was concerned her friends wouldn't know how to properly host a spirit. Pariya was kind, but it would hurt the spirit's feelings if everyone ignored them, intentional or not. Also, then Pariya might eat all the food, and that could be hard to explain. It wasn't as if Pax had a limitless budget to resupply Sonnet's kitchen. Somehow she didn't think the elf was living off of protein cubes and whole-sale crackers.

After zoning out for an unfortunately lengthy period of time, Pax blinked and reached out to knock at the door. At first her fist just grazed the wood, but she recalibrated and knocked more firmly, straightening. "Hello? This is... me! I hope this is you..." Humming, Pax tilted her head and juggled the bag in her arms, covertly eyeing the neighbors doors and trying not to think about their occupants. The less trouble you imagined the less trouble you got into, after all. She wasn't really sure if that was something her Mom had told her or one of Inzhu's phrases, but it sounded pretty good all the same.

At the faint sound of Pax's voice in the hall, Sonnet smiles at Red. "How's that for timing?"

He strides quickly over, opens the door, and stoops to gather Pax into a hug, bag and all. "Welcome, welcome! Thanks for coming. Please, make yourself at home. Red certainly does. Tear into the food." He gently takes the bag from her arms and sets in on the table.

"Something to drink? I can put the kettle on, if you don't want to leap straight for the hard stuff."

He makes himself pause, give her a chance to get her bearings or whatever she needs to do and respond. He knows far too little of her, the strange shape of her past, the other world she half-walks in. She's here so he can delight her, not overwhelm or confuse or trip over something he didn't see, so... watch and wait.

He takes another sip from his coffee, warm and rich and sweet, and smiles gently, eyes bright with fondness.

Oni made his way nervously to Sonnet's, holding a bag with several gifts for the party. As comfortable as he was starting to feel with this team, he also knew he had burned Sonnet and Red before. Hoping what he carried would mend fences, he awkwardly made his way into the building and up to Sonnet's apartment. With trepidation, he knocked. "If I can face down the Azzies with them, I can have a good evening with them" he reminded himself.

The knock draws Sonnet's attention away from Pax's reverie. He opens the door.

"Ah, good, good, the gang's all here. Please, come in. What're you drinking?" He gestures at the bottles on display. "Taéngéle? Whiskey? Beer?"

"I would like to start with this" he says, grabbing a bottle of what seems to be old, possibly homemade saké. "I was saving this for a special occasion and this felt special." You can make out an impression of a smile under his face-wrap. "Oh, and this!" as he rummages around again producing a small bundle of almost cartoonishly bright red cheese. "Sakura chizu. Real cheese."

Sonnet's smile widens. "Thank you!" He turns back to the liquor cabinet and produces a couple of appropriate glasses for the sake. "I may join you in that after I finish this little treat. Meanwhile I am definitely trying that cheese." He gestures at the cheese plate on the table. "This is real too, if you wanna give it a go."

His gaze returns to Oni and lingers for a few seconds of silence. "So. Job went pretty well, li-ha? Got the beginnings of a decent team, I'd say."

"I can't fight you there. We're definitely making our mark." He pours a drink for Sonnet, asking with nods to Red and Pax if they'd like to imbibe.

Mister Root stands at the door, holding a large tray covered over with alumi-synth wrap.  Something smells incredible.

"Ah, Sonnet.  A pleasure to join your team, in your home.  Most kind of you to extend me the invitation.  May I come in?"

"I brought a bit of a treat, to share, as well.  They call them 'Manabolts' - popular party dish in the Tir just now, apparently.  You steam the endives with rosewater to achieve the right floral aroma, then stuff the endives with minced venison and herbs, coated in melted Gruyere.  There's an Aztlaner-fusion variant called a Firebolt that is really quite excellent - they stuff a giant jalapeno instead.  I'm even more fond of those, to tell the truth - but I wasn't sure if spicy food was to your taste."

Root passes off the tray of "bolts" to you and thoughtfully contemplates your array of booze.  He looks almost surprised when his eyes alight on a particular bottle.

"Well now, I didn't expect such a comprehensive collection of taéngéle."  He taps the top of the elegantly-blown bottle.  Lots of high-end foodfab operations within the Tir like to package their premium drek in hand-made stuff - they mostly use low-wage dwarf and ork migrants for the extravagant labor required.

"This one happens to be my very favorite drink.  Would you mind?"
