Avalon

The realm of Avalon takes the form of a great continent-island, about the size of Shadow Earth's Australia. The island is temperate, with vast stretches of forests where it is said that the fae folk live. Few have seen the fae folk, but all know of their presence. There are sacred groves and valleys it is not wise to trespass in, for example. And on nights of the full moon great processions of fae are said to ride in the deep places.

Most people on Avalon reside in the realm of the same name, which occupies the center of the landmass. The realm of Avalon is medieval in nature, with a lifestyle and level of technology that would seem right at home in Shadow's Earth High Middle Ages. It is very much an idealized take on the Age of Chivalry. Tenant farmers tend the land and grow the food. They are overseen by various lesser nobility from their estates, which are protected by nobles known as knights. These knights and nobles in turn answer to the authority of the Emperor Corwin and his wife, the Empress Lorraine. The realm of Avalon is vast, and to properly govern it, the Imperial Couple has appointed various regional governors who oversee chunks of the realm in the name of the Royal Family.

The two most notable names among the noble families are the DuLacs and the Pendragons, whose families have served the Crown the longest. There are others, of course, famous names in their own right. The noble families command knights in their service, but their command, and their titles, can be revoked or altered at the Emperor or Empress's command.

The largest city of Avalon is the city of Camelot, which lies in the shadow of the great plateau that contains Castle Camelot. Camelot City is considered the height of sophistication and elegance in the realm. The higher a district is along the cliff's slopes, the more prestigious the neighborhood is. Even the most prestigious neighborhoods however, end several hundred feet below the gates of the fortress-citadel for security reasons.
