Camelot City

The great city of lights! Camelot City is the bastion of refinement and high society in the realm of Avalon. Set into and at the base of the great plateau that rises from the center of Avalon the continent, this city is the place all the nobility aspires to live in. But like any city, it depends greatly on the work of the ordinary people who make it up.

From the top of the massif descends a waterfall. This waterfall is fed by internal reservoirs within the plateau, that rise up to form the moat of Castle Camelot and to provide water for it. Spilling from the moat, the waterfall descends to the bottom of the massif, where it forms a lake and a river that runs through the heart of Camelot City. The city itself extends about five miles from the base of the massif and is divided into districts.

A traveler approaching by land or sailing up the river first comes to Sentinel's Point. This is the great walled gates that stand astride the river and the road next to it, guarded at all hours of day and night. Ships coming up and down the river can pass through once they've been inspected and cleared, while foot and horse traffic answers to the land-based guards. Once past Sentinel's Point, the traveler finds themselves in the Riverside district. This is a great mercantile area, chock full of cheap shops, warehouses, cheap brothels, and the other trappings of a place near the docks where merchants get out and begin transferring goods. It's also the place where people leaving Camelot load supplies for land or river journeys south, so there's a lot of activity.

Off to the east, hidden by hills, lies the Blacksmoke district. Blacksmoke is a district where the more unpleasant things of the city can be hidden from the view of travelers. Smelters. Forges. Tanners. Other businesses that raise a stink or are otherwise "uncouth" are hidden behind the barrier of high hills that obscure the smoke and stench from the businesses here. A small tributary of the Sentinel River flows through Blacksmoke, washing away the detritus of the district. There is a walled gate between Riverside and Blacksmoke, but the guards are less strict and demanding then the gate guards at Sentinel's Point.

Past Riverside and up a hilly path one enters Camelot proper. During the day the Byzantine District is a sedate, maze-like place where the well-to-do of the city gather in homes, cafes, and eateries to gossip and be seen. At night though, the entire district is ablaze with the multi-colored lights that brighten the whole city. Parties and grand processions are frequent events in Byzantine, drawing onlookers from higher up the hills and even the Castle itself.

The Slopeside District is an offshoot of the Blacksmoke district. Lying at the base of the hills that make up Byzantine, Slopeside is where a great many of the city's residential poor reside. Many of them have jobs in Blacksmoke or Riverside, and make the commute daily to and from work.

The Judges District lies beyond Byzantine. It is the district where the administration of the city is overseen. The local mayor lives and works here. The district is home to barristers, judges, administrators, and all the people who oversee the details that allows Camelot to be the great city of light. People who are wealthy, but not exceedingly so, sometimes live here. Most people find it terribly dull.

The Royal Hills District lies beyond the Judges District, at the base of the great cliff itself. This is the domain of the cities' elite. Those in the greatest favor with the Imperial Family reside here, amidst clusters of shops and boutiques that cater exclusively to their tastes and that of the Imperials up the cliff. A switchback road cuts through the cliff face, leading up to the castle. The more important you are or the more specialized your craft, the higher up the cliff you dwell. The great parades of Byzantine often wind their way here, lighting up the base of the cliff itself. The Royal Hills District ends a few hundred feet below the castle itself. The road continues but for security reasons the last few hundred feet are the domain of the castle soldiers.
