The Faerie Circle

The Faerie Circle: The circle of Shadows near to Avalon. Magic works in these shadows, to greater or lesser degree. The Shadows of the Faerie Circle are: Tilaine, Sansi, Azalea, Bilar, Cilaxia, Cyrene, Chiaroscuro, Nylen, and Onyx.

Tilaine: Corwin describes this Shadow as "Kids, this is where I met your mother. Beautiful forests and beaches. Nasty problem with upstart sorcerers though. We left things a little unsettled here so if you plan on visiting, know that you'll be stepping into a bit of a hornet's nest."

This is the only shadow connected to Avalon at game start.

Tilaine is largely unexplored. The western continent, at least, that which is known, is much like the Pacific Northwest of Shadow Earth's North America. Corwin and Lorraine know only of the coastal regions and the area that made up the former empire of Lorraine's great enemy Apox, which at most stretched a few hundred miles inland. Beyond Apox's forest citadel there are mountains but what is beyond the mountains is unknown. It is known to Avalon's intelligence service that some of Apox's former slaves have created new tribes and occupied what was once his empire, but there is much political division and upheaval in these lands and nothing is certain. Technology-wise, this Shadow is at the end of its' Bronze Age and just beginning to transition to iron.

Sansi: Corwin describes this Shadow as "Fair, with golden fields and a people burnished by the sun. From what I saw on the move, they had pyramids that wouldn't be out of place in some Incan or Mayan city back on my old Earth. But I didn't have time to explore."

Azalea: Corwin describes this Shadow as "Damnedest thing. The whole place reminded me of Tir-na-Nog'th, right down to the strange visions and omens. Only, the moon never sets there, and near as I can tell there's no sun. People, places, events, they all come and go like mist. And I had the hardest time trying to figure out who were the real people, and what were the illusions. Is there even a difference?"

Bilar: Corwin describes this Shadow as "It reminded me of Europe in the time of Queen Victoria. If Europe had been at war with China and the Chinese had zeppelins of steel and steam, and crossbows that worked off clockworks. I think Merlin would call it all "very steampunk". Had to make a few changes to Avalon's rules after I visited."

Cylene: Corwin describes this Shadow as "I came up to the ankle of a giant there. When I was riding my horse. And it turned out, that giant was a year-old toddler of his people. Everything's bigger in Cylene. And I do mean everything. On the upside, I found those giant birds we use to get to and from Nolava here."

Cilaxia: Corwin describes this Shadow as "I'm keeping my eye on this one. It's not that I got ambushed by swamp-dwellers or that their poison darts killed my horse. The thing I'm worried about is the magic-using animal people who looked like they were building forces for some kind of total war. I don't need that sort of headache close to home."

Chiaroscuro: Corwin describes this Shadow as "You ever been to Las Vegas, kid? Picture a city of all-hours vice of all kinds, only take away the neon and electricity and do everything in shades of black and white. I didn't stay long, but I got a real Film Noir vibe from the place is what I'm saying. I half-expected to run into mobsters with tommy guns."

Nylen: Corwin describes this Shadow as "They're pretty primitive. I almost died laughing when one of the natives came at me with an honest-to-Unicorn stone axe! I don't think these people have settled into cities yet. Though I did notice some creatures that would be right at home in my old home's tales of the Fair Folk demanding tribute from the locals. Might want to keep an eye on this one."

Onyx: Corwin describes this Shadow as "Beautiful mountains, sweeping plains. If it weren't for the fact that most of the rivers I saw were lava, I'd highly recommend it. I saw some creatures in the distance, about the size of a man, made of black glass. Or maybe wearing black glass armor of some kind? Hard to tell. They didn't notice me and I didn't feel like borrowing trouble."
