Re: The Gentlemen's Club - OOC Thread
I was thinking about the weapons that this little trip across Mars to train and arm the locals, involves. Unless it is written in stone, Henry or Winchester rifles are not the way to go. Repeaters are fine when you have tons of ammo. But they are not so great when you are having to train raw recruits with target practice. The real rub for going another route with a different weapon is even a trained soldier that is green with waste ammo in the heat of a fire fight. if they can shoot a lot, they usually will.

If you want to keep the American angle as to fool the Belgians, I suggest the Trap Door Springfield rifle and or carbine. It is one shot weapon where you have to insert a cartridge after each shot, but it would be better to conserve ammo. Plus, the weapon can be fitted with a bayonet for when you get up and personal with an enemy. With a Henry or Winchester all you have is a club when you run out of ammo or get personal ,and once you use it for that, it is broken more as like.

 Just some food for thought.

Of course, if it doesn't matter the Martini Henry the standard British service  rifle is good weapon  as well.

Stark's been talking fondly of Snider-Enfield's, because they can be reloaded locally... But yes, rapid fire is very much a problem in an extended operation like this one.

Snider-Enfield would work; Hammersmith has probably trained on it. I just assumed the British wanted plausible deniability.

That's the nice thing about new rifles - thousands of the old buggers go on the market where some enterprising colonial could pick 'em right up.

For a good price too, I'd wager.

My character was Infantry, so he would feel more comfortable with a rifle that a bayonet could be attached

Re: The Gentlemen's Club - OOC Thread

If you really wanted to confuse the issue you could use Belgium produced long arms. They have a thriving industry based on copying others designs in the 19th century, such as Tranter, Webley etc... and you could probably pick up new long arms for not much more then the surplus weapons flooding the market.

Or you could take the age old route of stamping English produced weapons with Belgium proofs.

I like that! And ammo could be taken from the enemy dead and captured stores.

Re: The Gentlemen's Club - OOC Thread

Hmmm, it's why I was kicking around the Snider-Enfield idea - they're black powder breech loaders, so we can make ammunition locally, or at least reload expended cartridges. Belgium at this point is likely using Albini-Braendlin's for its colonial forces and M1870 Belgian Comblain's for its own troops - the Mauser Model 1889's literally hot off the presses at this point (although The Soldiers Companion says that they have breech loading rifles, so maybe they've gotten an advanced shipment).

11mm and 7.65mm and smokeless powder respectively though, so no local reloading - which is almost certainly deliberate because it means that the Belgians can control the supply of ammunition into the area and keep locals from tooling up.

You know, it might be the case that I think too much about this. ^_^

Right guys sorry about being about this weekend. Try and get stuff moving again.

Larkin Ridley has been affected by the hurricane and we wont see him for at least a couple of weeks, I'm not going to kick him out/replace him for now but we'll see how it goes.

---

You guys know a lot about guns! I would make a comment about typical Americans but I believe Arthur Russel is a Kiwi? If you guys want to make a big deal about what type you use that's cool with me but just know it's not exactly my area of expertise!

I was hoping that Arnold Putman would be the guy supplying you with the guns as he's the arms merchant but he's not posted in a while so I'm trying to contact him to see what's up.

Right I'm going to move this along tonight as I think we've done more than enough planning and listening to me spout exposition. But just a quick question do you guys want to bother with roleplaying the purchasing of armaments and booking of a ship etc or just skip all that stuff and get straight on the road?
