Totally with you on that.  Was schooled in Chaosium RuneQuest, so am a little bewildered by the differences that the two forms have.  Still it is RuneQuest with Battle Magic, Rune Magic and leg hits that have people hopping to a different beat so often:)

I love that expression 'schooled' :D
Red Box here, plus some RQ and Traveller and Rolemaster, too.
Hardly any Glorantha though:(. The RQ setting I played in had been mostly alternative Europe. And even then not much, my group could not cope with the deadliness of the system.
I only really jumped in with Mongoose. Different age, though, so not much use for current Glorantha-Lore.

As is, I am somewhat overwhelmed by the power level of the characters ^^

Hello!

I played in a much older version, probably 1st or 2nd edition. Random character generation is always fascinating to me when done right. Really liking the family tree stuff, even though it's super-easy to wind up an orphan (then again, the early editions were quite deadly...).

Please bear with me during this horrendous character creation process. I actually like it a lot, but it takes time to do with players who do not have access to the rules.

Hope you'll be patient until we can get the game started. I'm really glad to have you here!

Hmm, I think I have a misunderstanding there.
Actually my own background only mentions that I fought at Battle at Pennel Ford and saw the crowning of the Prince of Sartar.

So actually I will roll for my family's history, too, unless you'd rather I don't, since my family is the clan's chieftain ?

Amazing tool, btw

Re: OOC discussions

I will try to finish up tonight.

I am an experienced role player but new to glorantha and the runequest system. I have finished history and attribute rolls and am now trying to piece together who I am.

With my rolls, I almost feel sorcery or spirit magic focus makes the most sense. Just need to read those sections as magic is always the tricky part of a system when learning it.

Re: OOC discussions

I wonder if there would be interest in being not only kin, i.e. Ernaldori, but actual relatives.

I have just created the Brandgor Bloodline and naturally there are some Ernaldori which have married into the Bloodline.

I have not delved in their families.
They might be related to your families, though.
The lower the number #, the closer you would be related to Harmast

#3, Henkinor, male, 1582-1608, married to Kallania (daughter of Dunorl, son of Brandgar), i.e. Husband of Harmast’s Aunt
#4, Kornarl, male, born 1600, married to Jarart (daughter of Henkinor), i.e. Husband to Harmast’s Cousin
#5, Yorid, female, born 1576, alive, married to Eoast (son of Dangmet, son of Brandgar), i.e. Wife of Harmast’s Uncle (2nd Grade)
#5, Ernalgand, female, born 1578, married to Tarolg (son of Dangmet, son of Brandgar), i.e. Wife of Harmast’s Uncle (2nd Grade)
#6, Yrgia, female, born 1593, alive, married to Vadnalth (son of Dangast, son of Estavos, son of Brandgar), i.e. Wife of Harmast’s Cousin (2nd Grade)
#6, Farast, male, born 1590, married to Enothynina (daughter of Eoast, son of Dangmet, son of Brandgar), i.e. Husband to Harmast’s Cousin (2nd Grade)
#6, Ivarkalga, female, born 1598), married to Eorobtar (son of Eoast, son of Dangmet, son of Brandgar), i.e. Wife of Harmast’s Cousin (2nd Grade)
#6, Ed, female, born 1597, married to Mindrin (son of Tarolg, son of Dangmet, son of Brandgar), i.e. Wife of Harmast’s Cousin (2nd Grade)
#6, Harva, female, born 1600, married to Tenarl (son of Tarolg, son of Dangmet, son of Brandgar), i.e. Wife of Harmast’s Cousin (2nd Grade)

Thoughts and other matters not apparent to the other characters should be posted as private lines to the GM.

Just for clarification.
That is essentially most, if not all, of what entails building the personality and thus communicate attitudes.

So physical signs should be posted openly, e.g. Harmast's eyes widened at the boisterous claim of the Greydog pick-picket
However, reason/explanations, e.g. Surely the thief did not really think that they would believe him. That was an insult to their intelligence, should be posted in PLs only ?
Okay, that will take some getting accustomed to :D

Re: OOC discussions

I'm definately open for discussion on this. Maybe the posts would be too boring from a literary perspective.

My reasoning is that it actually helps roleplaying if a character's "inner life" has to be roleplayed rather than simply described. As it says in the Game Info: "...letting action reveal the character’s personality, not introspection."

But it's also important to have fun, and if many of you (players in this game) think it's a bad posting policy I can change it.

Re: OOC discussions

In reply to GM (msg # 51):

Well, perhaps a more detailed example is able to explain my typical posting style and thus elaborate on my earlier comment
I just copy-paste a post from two days ago in a WFRP2 game. I have edited to strike the passages that would be PLs in your game.

Wolfgang looked a bit restless.
"Well, yes, smith then scholar or vice versa. Whatever it takes to identify the owner of this sword."
He could not quite follow why a smith's expertise would make it easier to fingerpoint the device, still, he was pretty certain it would be a lot easier to find a weaponsmith than to find a scholar, so that made perfect sense to him.

Wolfgang suddenly realized that he had come to appreciate the resourcefulness of his companions. And that had settled into a certain expectation. They were too few to learn all they had to, so they had to take it step by step.

The Wolfling had thought the matter settled but then the wizard reacted to their noble companion's earlier reservations.

Wolfgang listened, tried to follow, then blew his cheeks and let out the air in irritation.
The wizard was blathering.
Or, he had to admit as he remembered their late and extensive stay in Altdorf, at least by northern standards. He had had to get accustomed to the many inconsequentual  words and phrases of Reiklanders whose main purpose seemed to only be to hear their own voices. In other words: blathering.

The Ulrican lost the wizard. Would she go or not? Would she help or not? It looked like she would rather follow her obsession with that weird southern festival
.
"Don't mention the room, it's a small affair. You need not feel any kind of obligation towards us. If you'd rather, you know, check out that festival then do that. It's what you came here for anyway."
Wolfgang shrugged.
Once again, he was thrown off track by his assumption that any righteous person would do his or her very best to end the threat of a chaos artefact. Frau Minhelm seemed not to care, though, and merely seemed to consider the matter a leisurely endeavour to while away her free time.
"Well, I will not venture forth into an unknown city at night."
"There's a lot to do, so we better rise at first light. I intend to anyway."

He finished his food and drink and would then turn in for the night. Wolfgang left the common room.
Now let me add the OOC comment of the wizard of the character Wolfgang was talking to:
You know, I am really liking this dynamic. The best part is that Milly is from Ostland and this verbose pretense is something she picked up i Altdorf, to put on airs of sophistication and be as fashionable as the other 'cool' folks of Altdorf. Plus she is embarrassed if not downright ashamed of her native accent, which is associated with poorness and being the lowest kind of uncultured pleb. A fact she is painfully aware of, making her try to mask her accent without much success.
My "concern" (it actually is not a concern, just an observation) is less the literacy aspects (most obviously much shorter readable posts), but that actually a lot of personality would have been lost (or rather: be limited to the GM's knowledge). In fact, if not for that OOC post I would have been a bit irritated. "I" as in "the player" as opposed to "the character". Well, to understand that you'd need to know the whole exchange, but kindly just take my word for it that it would have been the classical misunderstanding which naturally comes with forum-based roleplaying.

I am not opposed to this approach, mind, I'm just saying that I need to adapt and write a lot more in spoken words, I guess, which probably can become a bit awkward sometimes, hopefully not offensive.
In fact I cannot even assess if it is "bad posting policy" or not since I never had that approach.

Ok, I actually have no experience of the policy I suggested, and it doesn't seem like a common one. I'll change it so the policy is more in line with what is mainstream on rpol. I don't want it to become something players have to think about adjusting to.

Well, maybe we should have waited for the other players' opinions ^^
Maybe it's just me :D

As for 'mindreading' (for lack of a better word).
Yeah, that's what Insight skill is all about, right ? Now, Harmast seems to be fairly good at that kind of thing as the authors obviously sent some percentiles that way. Naturally it would ne nice to see that it actually has some benefit in game, i.e. the nuances of the non-skilled vs the skilled. No idea how to do that, except for specific situations where an actual implications of a certsain attitude is essential.
Well, whatever.
I repeat: I have no isssues with adapting. I cannot claim that I will succeed all the time ^^

I'm waiting for two characters to be finished, but I think I'll start the game as soon as I find the time. If those two characters aren't ready at game start they'll join the party as soon as they are able to.

Please fix your character sheets so that they're comprehensible.

One thing to consider is making a list of the events that have contributed to your reputation.

Re: OOC discussions

Not sure what GM listed for you but in the book p. 88:

quote:
Harmast was initiated into the cult of Issaries, and tried to avoid the growing conflict in Dragon Pass, preferring talk and negotiation to warfare. However, following the Great Winter, Harmast fought a duel with a thane from the Grey Dog clan and killed him; the thane’s kin have sworn vengeance upon Harmast. Harmast fought at the Battle of Pennel Ford, alongside his kinfolk, Vasana and Yanioth. He witnessed the Dragonrise and fought for Starbrow during the Liberation of Sartar, acclaiming her as Prince.

So we are kin!  Let me know if you want to work out some background.

I was under the impression that reputation is a lot dependent on what your grandparent and parent did. And less in what one did oneself.

Re: OOC discussions

My guess, too.
In the attempt to retro engineer the character I believe he has Noble occupation and that alone suffices to get the Reputation he has, i.e. 15%.
So I'd say, both events he actually did take part in, Battle at Pennel Fort, Liberation of Sartar and witness Starbrow becoming Prince really were the 'survived' incidents.
So, yeah, nothing too outstanding. With the low CHA that is fine.
Clearly he would be somewhat awed by his two kin who contributed more noticeably and valiantly.
I think Orlanthi base their leaders on accomplishment, i.e. being the chief's son is just that and in no way positions me as a future chief or anything.

Re: OOC discussions

So hopefully we will have eight characters ready shortly:

Brastan - Odayla hunter
Breganya - Chalana Arroy healer
Harmast - Issaries trader
Mansur, Daka Fal assistant shaman
Meowmast Slink - Yinkin hunter
Tannis - Orlanth warrior
Vasana - Orlanth (Vinga) warrior
Yanioth - Ernalda assistant priestess

You are all from the Ernaldoring clan of the Colymar tribe even if some of you have been away for shorter or longer periods.

At game start you will be making a stop in Apple Lane on your way to Jonstown to see what's going on at the front. Is the Lunar garrison still there? Not on anyone's orders, but out of curiosity.

Your clan chieftain, Baranthos, father of Harmast, tasked you with escorting a delivery of gifts to Verinos the Old in Runegate, chieftain of the Taraling clan.

For various reasons none of you are in any particular hurry to return home.

Just to be perfectly clear: you have all been on the road together for a week or so. You are not total strangers. You are all in the inn sittning as a group at the same table.

Some of you have known each other for a long time, some of you shorter. You are all from the Ernaldori clan (at least originally) and know each other’s names, cults, and occupations (if any).

So please add basic info to your character descriptions for reference.

Or maybe we should have a PC presentation thread?

Rune Lord is just a step within a cult, just below Rune Priest.  It doesn't really have anything to do with skills in a particular field.  I don't think there are Rune Priests of Hunting.  :)  Anyway, seems like that was more bluster/bragging than a statement of fact.  Perhaps Meowmast disagrees though!

We need to decide if we are going to help first . . . either at the stated terms, after negotiating the terms, for free, or not at all.  Vasana would prefer that discussion occur in private.  If we decide to help, then we can determine how to do so.  Whether that be attempting negotiation, going out and finding the tusk riders, laying a trap, etc.

In reply to Harmast (msg # 95):

Correct, although Vasana may or may not know about Issaries's holy days.

In two days it is Windsday and Vasana will be doing religious stuff all day and Jaranse may be as well, up to him.  If there is not an appropriate place to do her rituals around Apple Lane, she will need to travel somewhere else (she expected to be near Jonstown by then).  Then she would need to travel back on Fireday.  So it should not affect Vasana's participation in the battle itself, assuming it is actually on Wildsday.

As an aside, Defense Day is the actual Vinga High Holy Day but the day varies from year to year as it is based on the coming of a storm.  The GM decreed that for simplicity it would be on Reaping day when the Orlanth menfolk do their harvest ritual.

Mewmast climbs the tower and checks for line of sight and has midnight drag sticks to the various spots for good shots. Climbing to the roof of the Uleria temple also again scouting out good choke points to target again having midnight mark them with a stick. The east road into apple lane put in a two-tier tripwire one high to clothesline them and about 30 feet ahead a foot high to trip the tuskers. If they see and avoid the first hoping the second will catch them.
The west entrance to apple lane by area 15 put a double tripwire with the two tries on the southeast entrance. At location 3 just at the end of the forest should put in a pit and have some javaliners  on the clift edge on the north side ready to pop up and throw Javalins from height advantage.

After getting down will set up targets at the best shot points and have Meowmast and Other archers practice firing on the spots go get the range down.

My understanding was that those who set out only try to find the camp to get a notion of the foes we have to face. However, the 'battle' will be held at the hamlet (unless the scouting provides a better solution to the task).
So, imho, unless you excel at stealth and tracking you may want to reamin behind and await the reports of the scouts. That's what I do, anyway ^^

FYI:  I am awaiting answers to three questions in Post #32.

Given where the tusk riders' camp is and which way they went to Saraskos's farm, which road are they likely to use to get to Apple Lane (Meowmast, Janeera, Brastan, or Brightflower can probably answer this)?

Did Harmast, Yanioth, and Breganya learn anything from the villagers?

Did Vasana and Tannis learn anything about the terrain and buildings?

Brightflower:
Brightflower listened carefully to the plans and suggestions.

"So, tomorrow is Reaping Day, and on Windsday we will gather all the villagers in the inn to learn the details of your plan."

With that she returned to the inn.

((OOC: Unless someone wants to add something, I will move on to the next day now.))

Today is Clayday, tomorrow is Windsday, which is Reaping Day/Defense Day, the following day is Fireday, the day after is Wilday when the tusk riders are supposed to show up.

As noted, Vasana will not be available tomorrow and the others should probably be practicing or preparing defenses (Yanioth can summon an Earth Elemental to make pits, others can round up oil or water, or fill bits with spikes, etc.).  We can present the plan to the villagers in two days as Brightflower suggested, but that is Fireday, not Windsday.

I hope you are enjoying the game. I am, even though I feel like we're still in a sort of introductory phase. Some of you aren't posting very often, but I still hope you will activate. Please let me know in a PM if there's anything on your mind regarding this game.

The day of the Tusk rider attack is approaching. It seems likely there will be combat when they attack (or at a later date - Dragon Pass is a fairly violent place after all). I would like to remind you all of the dangers your characters will be exposed to. Please make sure you use all your magical abilities to boost and protect you.

Take a look at your available spells and use them. Ask me and your fellow players for advice.

Earth Season, Illusion Week, Clay Day
That's Day 45, so in 5 days is a Minor Holy Day for Ernalda (RQG p. 293)
Issaries has a Seasonal Holy Day tomorrow (Day 41)

RQG p.315:
Rune points can be replenished up to the total the adventurer has with their deity by participating in worship of the deity at a temple, sanctified area, or other holy place to the deity on a holy day and succeeding with a Worship skill roll and an expenditure of at least 2 magic points.

Minor Holy Days:
With a successful Worship roll on a minor holy day, initiates get 1D6 Rune points restored. With a failure, no Rune points are restored.

I am assuming that the Temple to all the Deities is considered a Shrine (± 0%) for all cults, but that's probably something we may want to have confirmed by GM.
Minor Holy Day (+10%).
You should easily get back your Rune Points since your Worship (Ernalda) is probably high already.

Meowmast Slink:
Meowmast casts warding 3 directly in front of the tin Inn gate.
Well, the question here is: who or what is considered an enemy ^^
Also, I'll remind you that you...
RQG p.258:
This defensive spell protects the target it is cast upon against any other incoming spell, including those such as Detection, Protection, and even Healing spells.

Re: OOC discussions

ok, I will try to be more clear about where we are.

When I last posted an update everyone was "done" with their rounds, except Vasana's Bison who got a butt attack as well.

At the moment I'm waiting for everyone's orders, but will make "a round" later today or tomorrow whether or not everyone's posted. So the status is "New Round".

If people post more orders than they are allowed, I will tick them off as they come into play unless later orders contradict them.

And yes, Meowmast has posted two rounds worth of orders. Maybe because I posted a Bison update that really should have been in my round report. It's not a problem.

Re: OOC discussions

As far as I'm concerned I can see three ways this can go now.

Some or all of you return to Clearwine to report about the situation in Apple Lane and for Vasana to become thane.
You go to Jonstown to participate in, or observe, the attack on the Lunar forces there.
You do something I did not anticipate ;)

If you go to Clearwine first you might still make it to the attack on Jonstown.
If you go to Jonstown you can go to Clearwine to report after the attack.

Not going to Clearwine to report at all would of course cause problems. It would be very anti-social.

@Harmast, I believe that the Lunars are occupying Jonstown, it's the last town that they control in Sartar. It's not a case of which clans are in there, more a case of which ones will be turning up to lay siege to it if I understand correctly.

If we get there "early" I don't think we'd not accomplish much as the town can't be besieged until there are sufficient forces to blockade it anyway.

Errmmm.
That's what I meant.
Which forces are about to besiege Jonstown and throw out the Lunars.
Or maybe, and that was my question to the chief, which non-Lunar forces are already there.
I doubt they can orchestrate all the different clans all getting there at the exact same date.
Unless I'm seriously misjudging the numbers of men and women involved in such an endeavour.

One thing that I'd appreciate is if your character descriptions make reference to any trait, characteristic, passion, rune, or skill that is at 80% (meaning 16 for characteristics) or higher.

Especially Runes would be nice to know, I guess, as the runes are supposed to influence one's personality.

Apple Lane and Dragonpass work :D

Re: OOC discussions

Hey Mr GM - a house rule we were discussing on the Facebook Runequest group was too give a +10 bonus to the rune affinity for a week to those who attend the worship service of a deity in one of that deity's runes, even if they were lay members. This encourages people to act like the god, acts a lot like augment enhancements from HQG, and gives people a reason to attend worship services even if they're just lay members. Getting +10% to Earth after attending an Ernalda service can help with farming, for example. It also strengthens the connection for Initiats and Rune Masters even if they are full up on Rune Points, making their magic easier. What do you think? Of course, people would still need to kick in the 3 clacks and 2 MPs.

Re: OOC discussions

At this time I'd like to quote from the rulebook p 8-9:

quote:
Passage of Time
Time can pass quickly. In RuneQuest, the assumption is that one season passes each time the adventurers have an adventure. In little more than a month of playing every week, a game year has passed. After a real year, the adventurers may be a decade older. A long campaign may span a generation or more.

Adventurers typically have social obligations beyond adventuring. They are members of cults and clans, with seasonal holy days and other events. They may have farms to manage, warriors to command, or even tribes to lead. A seasonal time scale permits acknowledgement (and even roleplaying) of these other obligations, without getting bogged down in daily details.

So the game is built around the idea that when you're "done" with a situation, your characters return to their homes and normal lives.

I hate to stop you from doing something you want to do, but if there is such a thing - something you'd really like to do - I'd like to discuss it now. Otherwise I think it's time for the Dead Calm to return home.

As per the rules (p. 418):

The Worship skill allows a cult member to participate in a Worship ritual to the deity specified. If the Worship ritual is held in a temple, holy place, or sanctified ground on a holy day of the god, the presiding officials (High Priest, Rune Priest, God-talker, etc.) receive a POW gain roll if they succeed with their Worship skill.

A Worship ritual held on the High Holy Day of the cult or during the Sacred Time, allows all participants that make a successful Worship skill roll to make a POW gain roll.

Orlanth priests who aren't at a temple traditionally wander using an ox-drawn cart that carries a votive image of the god, wandering as the winds do, bring Orlanth's blessings to far flung steads.

Re: OOC discussions

I would presume that an area made holy with the Sanctify spell would count as a Site (Page 338), so a group like hours would have to stop and worship if we were traveling, taking a day off. Sites don't give a bonus to the Worship skill, so Worship On The Run would give only 1D3 rune points on any old day (Holy Site, Page 315) or 1D6 points on a Minor Holy Day (Windsday for Orlanth, Clayday for Ernalda). Associated cults would probably be treated as non-holy day  worship. 1D3 points isnt a lot, and it always costs a Rune point to cast Sanctify. If you roll a 1 all you can do is try again and having wasted a day without getting anything. And, it's temporary, no spiritual defenses, no bonuses to the worship roll, no special cult spells, nothing. Literally, all it's good for is getting back Rune points.

I asked the devs for clarification in the FB RQG group.

For replenishing rune points, a Sanctified area is no worse than a major temple.

The rules for replenishing are very clear (p. 315). Nobody replenishes anything if it's not a holy day or sacred time. Associated cults only replenishes on high or seasonal holy days.

Also note that you must make a succesful Worship-roll and sacrifice at least 2 magic points to replenish.

Re: OOC discussions

Several things have been addressed in the OCC while I was drowning in work that I would like to chime in on, too.

Experience Checks
Please explain the “pick four occupational or cult skills to get an experience check” again.
When do we pick and when do we roll ?
This obviously (p.416) only applies if the adventuring took less than half a season.
Since we set out on 37th Earth and the season has 56 days I take it this does apply.
Naturally, the respective skill must have the box for experience check in the first place, e.g. you cannot take Spirit Lore.
Also, have there been any skills we may check from the battle or aftermath ?
Since you are not allowed to pick those skills either.
E.g. I already had a check for Broadsword, so I cannot take Broadsword skill for those four picks.

POW gain rolls
Let me get this straight.
We only get a POW gain roll if it’s the High Holy Day of the respective chosen cult or Sacred Time, right ? That High cannot be stressed enough ! Further, there must be a holy site. Well, unless one is already a presiding official… which I seriously doubt. Then again, we already have a thane among us, so… I guess everything is possible.

Rune Points Recovery
Naturally we are not all Orlanth worshippers. Or more specifically: only few of us have dedicated their respective Rune Points to Orlanth.
As per the info given in the “Player Characters” thread, none have ^^
So no recovery of Rune Points in an Orlanth ceremony for any of us, unless we have one has a specific Rune Point dedicated to Orlanth, e.g. if Harmast were to have the Flight from the associated cult of Orlanth Adventurous.
So no benefit – rules-wise – but I’ll gladly join any Orlanth ceremony for role-play reasons.

Can I assume someone has healed my wound (1 HP on right arm), via magic or first aid, since the battle or should I check up natural recovery ?
p.56:
the healing rate determines how many hit points are recovered in each hit location at the end of each week through natural healing.
The question here is whetehr travelling is a strenuous activity or not. If it is then I not natural healing has occured. Otherwise I should be backto health on 54th Earth

You pick and roll "in between adventures" once a season. You don't have to be afraid of missing out if you forget something, I will ask you to do it when it's time.

quote:

Yes. As you've not returned home yet I don't know if it will apply.

quote:

That's correct.

quote:
Also, have there been any skills we may check from the battle or aftermath ?

I made a mistake after the defence of Apple Lane and let you roll before the end of the season. It's no big deal, but normally you only roll skill checks once per season. If you rolled for a skill after Apple Lane you will not get a second roll next end of season.

I keep a record of skill checks for all characters.

You can only roll for a skill once per season, so no use in picking a skill you already have a check in.

Now I have to go and work a little, will continue with the other questions in a little while.

Correct. Game mechanics wise it would be rather problematic - in my opinion - with POW going up like a rocket.

I believe that you'd get the associate rate for Rune points on the high holy day of Storm/Wind/Mobility, and of course at Sacred Time, but no other times. I'll check.

That sounds reasonable to me, but of course, the GM's thinking prevails.

Being that Ulina is all about that Storm Tribe unity, she'll happily participate in Ernalda, Lightbringer and Humakt worshippers, even if no power gain rolls or magic is involved. She feels that the Heortling gods should be supported whenever possible. She'll definitely have votive statues (of the non-rune point granting variety) of Ernalda, Vinga, Issaries and the other Lightbringers, Humakt and even Uleria in her wagon.

I think Ulina may even develop a craft skill so she can make these things herself!

I think Rune Point recovery is solely dependent on the Cult and not on the Rune itself.
It would indeed be iontrigueing to get back Rune Points in any associate Movement/Harmony Cult.

Show up, pay your clacks and you're in. In my games I houserule on a successful Worship roll you get a +10% on one of that god's runes for a week (thus, an incentive to go to worship ceremonies for Lay people), but that's me, and not how the GM does it here.

I'd urge getting Disrupt or Demoralize ASAP. I plan on lots of little zaps next adventure.

Also, you're entitled (in this game, from my understanding) to two Power gain rolls every year - at your cult's high holy day, and at Sacred Time.

I don't think Initiates can teach Spirit Magic, but at Clearwine I don't think it would be that big of a deal to find a priest or shaman who could teach it. Rune Lords can even teach Spirit Magic now in RQG.

Hi everybody! I just finished my character sheet, yaaaaay. ^)^

I hope we can be friends and stab bad guys together. Erina is an initiate of Vinga. She's very close to qualifying as a Wind Lord. SO CLOSE AAAAAAAAH (she needs 1% more Jump). Her hair is naturally very bright red; it practically glows, and she's quite the looker. Subtlety is not her strong suit.

We might even have enough people proficient with shields to make a phalanx. That'd be awesome! I was originally hoping there was an official Elmal cult writeup somewhere, because spears and fire magic are both cool, so both together is double cool. But there isn't, so I settled for Vinga.

Anyway! I originally intended for Erina to be Harmast's younger sister and Vasana's buddy/squire who looks up to her (except not literally because Vasana is short), but I'm not sure if that will mesh. I made Erina 18 years old for that purpose, so she went through her adulthood initiation a few years earlier than usual.

Here's my background table. If you guys would look over it to see if Harmast and Vasana think those connections make sense, or if anybody else thinks there could be a good connection, I'd be grateful.

In reply to Erina (msg # 334):

I own the GenCon 50 Gods of Glorantha preview. It says to use Yelmalio, as printed. So, the Orlanthi do have the shield phalanx.

I'd do up some associated magic though from the Thunder Brothers (Orlanth) and from Redalda the Horse Loving Daughter (basically, Ernalda with ponies.) I'd drop stuff like Kuschile Horse Archery.

And Ohai, I'm on track to be a Storm Voice. That means I am also technically Vinga, Vinga Thunderous! Certainly we can come up with some weather myths for Vinga.

--

Player Suggestions for Elmal Associated Magic:

Elmal does not have access to Sunspear in any way. However, as Elmal was never defeated by Zorak Zoran, Elmal cultists can use spells like Fireblade and Firearrow.

Orlanth Adventurous: Lightning - Before leaving on the Lightbringers Quest, Orlanth commanded Yavor Lightning to serve as Elmal's thane. Elmal cultists may use their Fire rune when using this Rune Magic.

Orlanth Rex: Command Worshippers - Before he left on the Lightbringer's quest, Elmal was elected to the role of Chieftain with Orlanth's approval. Orlanth Gifted his best Thane with his torc of authority. A legally elected Elmal chieftain can sacrifice for this spell and uses it under the same restrictions as an Orlanth chieftain would. Elmal chieftains use their Truth rune for this magic.

Humakt: Oath - As a pledge of friendship and warrior honor between the two gods of honor and battle of the Storm Tribe, Humakt lends Elmal this spell

Bless Crops: Ernalda (Esrola) - Ernalda gives this spell to the husband-protector who defended her daughter Esrola during the cold of the Greater Darkness while she slept in the Earth.

Heal Body: Another gift from Ernalda, this by way of Elmal's wife, Redalda the Horse Loving Daughter. Redalda could take the shape of a steed and supported Elmal in the defense of the Storm Tribe. Elmal cultists can use their fire rune for this spell, but only with humans and horses. It has no power to heal creatures of Darkness (such as Tuskers and Uz.)

Thanks! It's kind of disappointing that you're supposed to use Yelmalio, though. Half the fun of Elmal was the fire magic, and Yelmalions are expressly forbidden from using fire magic.

You edited your post before I made mine. Good info! Very nice. Much firearrow. Many javelin.

What do you mean you're on track for Storm Voice? Like you qualify for Storm Voice already, or you're really close?

My profession is Priest and I'm pretty close for skills, but I need that almighty POW. I need to sacrifice for two more points of magic and then get my POW to 18. Gonna be zapping people with disruption a lot if we get into combat.

Yeah, the POW requirement is a beast! It's theoretically possible to qualify for Rune Lord right out the gate, but Rune Priest is more or less out of reach for starting characters.

Is there any way I can help you advance? Or anybody, for that matter? (Give me really hard jumps to make please. I only need 1%! One percent! Maybe I should just make that my seasonal research...)

Re: OOC discussions

The rulebook states multiple times that POW gain rolls are made at the same time as experience rolls and are made each season. Successful Battle and Worship rolls also allow for POW gain rolls each season, though the Worship POW gain checks only apply to presiding officials at Worship ceremonies in temples, holy places, etc on holy days of any kind. I believe the intention is for POW to accumulate quickly so that PCs can gain Rune Priest/Lord status and new Rune spells and points at a rapid pace so that they can become mythic heroes before they're 800 years old. That, of course, fits Glorantha as typically presented, which is a land of mythic heroes, and if anyone is going to be a mythic hero, shouldn't that someone be a PC?

Normally, initiates get a free and extra POW gain roll by participating in holy day and Sacred Time ceremonies, in addition to seasonal POW gain checks based on skill, spell use, and training.

Anyway, did you house rule POW gain rolls to be less frequent in general, i.e., did you remove POW experience checks from the game? It's fine if you did. I just want clarification on this.

It would change the dynamics of the setting quite a bit, making PCs much weaker over time, high-tier monsters basically invincible, and God-Talker/Rune Priest the end all, be all of character status. With only 2 POW gain rolls per year, getting that +20% is crucial to character advancement.

Re: OOC discussions

The rulebook doesn't specify that the ritual leader must be a Rune Priest, Rune Lord, or whatever. It does seem to imply that, though, since all of the examples are Rune levels of some kind.

The Worship ritual has to occur in a holy place such as a temple for it to count, as well. I think holy day rituals can restore Rune Points anywhere; I'm not sure about that. But they definitely don't give the ritual leader a POW XP check unless they're in a holy place.

Of course. I think the "all the time"-feeling is even easier to get in this play-by-forum format, and even easier when we've just had a long summer break. I'll keep that in mind. In a face-to-face game I think the Two Sisters-defence wouldn't have amounted to even a single game session.

I love Pendragon.  I inherited a game someone else was GMing and then disappeared.  Things were going pretty well but we ended up with only two characters (there were four originally including me).  So I recruited 5-6 others but over 6 months they all dropped with little to no warning.  Kinda killed the game as I created a bunch of plots and such for all of these players and then ended up with my original two players off in Ireland for no really good reason relating to their characters.  So I started up an Amber game with 13 players and almost 3000 posts in the last month.  :)

Based on The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny.  A five book series, that was followed by a second five-book series.  The basics of the setting is that there is a place called Amber that is the architype of the multiverse and everything else is just reflections or 'shadows' of Amber.  The game itself is diceless and relies primarily on story-telling.

In reply to Erina (msg # 415):

Runequest 2 had a play by yourself adventure called Scorpion Hall. It can also be played with a gm and one player. I would convert the monsters into RQG and we can go as fast as we like. Basically we could do several posts in a day. Since we would not have to wait for everyone to react.

Hi :) Hope you're all doing well.

I have to say I'm a bit tempted to revive this game. But I'm afraid I'll end up finding I didn't really have the time for it.

Maybe with a smaller cast and slower pace.

Otherwise, I'll NPC some characters for awhile. One of the worst things with keeping the game going was the amount of time I had to spend generating characters that then went afk.
