I hadn't really thought of where Nwofia was from either, nor why she's in the area, but she knows she's never going home again.  It's not like one can simply travel deep into sub-Saharan Africa in the 6th century AD.  The name Nwofia is and Igbo name (cause I nicked it from Chinua Achebe) but I don't think she's from QUITE that far.
