To the lands beyond the Rhine

The Argentos’s discuss it for a while, as the show closes with the last few acts, and eventually opt for the night departure.

“Alayna should be up front, I think,” Hylensia said, looking over the line of wagons being assembled.

Phileas looked in the direction of the “stunt rider” girl.  “Like we came into town, be just as showy going out?”  Alayna had the role of lead rider entering the town, primarily because she was “showy”.   She made a good first impression.

“She’s a half elf,” Hylensia said

“Of course!  Some of that Elven eyesight!” Phileas replied.

“That, and we are going into Elven territory.  I mean, they are Schwarzwald Elves but they are Elves, of course.”

“Though there’s no telling what that means, Hylensia,” Phileas said.

The popular rule of thumb for Elves in Europa is to classify them by color- somehow, the colors they are most associated with in their dress and art also seems to work to define their personalities.  The Ardennes Elves are Green, the Savoy Elves White, the Veluwe Elves are Gray, and the Schwarzwald Elves… well they seem comfortable with camouflage patterns.  They have a small culture, reclusive, and for thousands of years isolated by neighbors of various types with whom they never had good relations.  When the neighbors became Orcs, what relations they did have became vicious, and the Schwarzwald Elves have now held their ground after more than a century of warfare with Orcs.

“Not an open and friendly kingdom of Elves, exactly why they need us,” Phileas said.  He called out to Alayna:  “Alayna, you have something of the Elven Sight, do you not?  If we travel at night, would you be comfortable in the front?  I would be there as well, and Og.  Most certainly Og.”

Tahra speaks up. I'll take the rear. Klimmin can flit behind as a sentinel.

"If we're travelling at night", said Nwofia, "I have to confess that I am more than a little useless as a sentinel.  I have to rely on my ears I'm afraid because otherwise, I'm stuk in impenetrable darkness."

Alayna blushed, nodding. "Aye, I have some of the sight, not all but I can see better, I've been told," she replied, walking over. "It would be an honor to assist in this way."

She looked positively giddy to be trusted to do this for the troupe.

"We're not traveling in complete darkness, are we?" Lindon asked.  "We're going to have our lanterns aren't we?"

He really hoped the horses could see better in the dark than he did.

Og casts a few dancing lights that hover a few feet around his head, lighting up the area around him well enough that he is confident to lead the way.

“If anyone else can benefit from a torch I can summon a few more.” He offers to the group, happy that his magic is finally of use.

Raising a hand shyly, Alayna spoke again. "I am not able to see fully in the dark, like my half blood side, but... I can see better in the near dark than most. And I see things that other full bloods might not. So I... I can ride ahead a bit, and you can have your like. And I can see other things. Maybe."

She bit her lip, wondering if she was being too forward.

“No. Absolutely no. It may see you before you see it. Whatever it is. At least they will see us all together and be afraid, but if it sees you all alone ... well, I’m not saying I would not be afraid of you, Alayna, but maybe it is not as wise as I am.”
