This Thread is to post whatever you want, … With a few guidelines

 1. Keep it clean, no vulgar posting and follow all the Rules for this site.

 2. This would be the thread to post if you plan to be away for a longer period than 24hrs post a time frame for us to expect you back.

 3. It’s O.K. to ask questions or make comments about other games, but not on an active game presently being played on this site.

 4. Don't post rolls, or questions related to the current adventure that should be posted in OOC or IC threads.

Hello

Just what to let you know we can start chat and work on character ideas and well as game ideas.

The game is D&D 3.5 any Core(players) and and Wizards of the Coast printed material is just about 99% approved.

Also you can use the Core Kingdoms or Kalamar books.

Greetings. I'm from Arizona so I switch between MST and PST as we don't adjust for the time savings. I've been playing DnD since 88 or so.... The Kalamar setting is awesome.

I will bump threads to list them in an order that makes sense for me to manage.

Also I will edit threads as I good so some will be incomplete and then I will go back. I do this to keep a place holder and so I don't forget when'i come up with ideas and as I develop the game.

Now if your read through my RTJ info you may have seem a comment that this is somewhat a free-form.

I just posted the Mechanics for when you are allowed to post freely.

You basically can do what you please post some good story-line material use fair DCs which is the bases of your posting freely.

Keep in mind Combat is never free form unless you are beating on a child or someone not capable to defend themselves.

When in doubt just ask.

The next thing I will post is how we do combat so the posting is smooth and fair.

any question and or concerns now is the time to ask :)

By the way I welcome any and all input for the City of Basir.

I could use ideas on districts and their break downs as well as special places of interest.

They will need my approval and i will do some mods to fit the game but your all welcome to build the city as you might image it.

So today I will add one/two that are just about done. or maybe missing none important favor text.

I could use a Co GM that checks charater sheets. anyone interest please PM me

Begining Monday 24 hr rule goes full effect anyone not ready to start will have to wait to be added.

Once the first set of charaters meet and set out on adventure, all others will have to waiti until GM can storyline them in. Sometimes this takes days or weeks based on posting and flow.

Enjoy everyone!

Last quick note as of now that's it for player edits.

We have 5 players as of now. Just need to wait for sheets to be finished no "bigger". This actually works just fine it will give time for the current IC players to RP a little and set the adventure in order. Adding players is easily so let keep going. Also with my storyboard set up they can just read that thread and be completely caught up, if the adventure moves to fast.

I feel its really going good the momentum is excellent. TY

Catweazle:
Hey DM

I am wondering if you have any aversion to me using the standardised character sheet for 3.5e from Rpol? I have included a blank sheet below.

This sheet has literally ALL required information in it, without the excessive use of tabulation that the HTML sheet does.

I understand I won't be able to access my character sheet after the game starts, but the HTML sheet is very unfamiliar to me and is quite messy with all of the formatting required to include tables.

I am bascially ready to insert my character into a sheet, if you could get back to me at your earliest convenience about using the sheet below, I will draw it up.

If I must use the HTML sheet, I may struggle to complete it on time to begin with the rest of the group.

So I think I actually did answer this some time ago

For the character sheet I use the HTML and if you don't know how to use it I can fill in the info if you supply it.

If you want to use this sheet yopu sent its ok, BUT not in the Character Sheet section. You can do so maybe in a PM or other. Even in descriptions if you want.

You can even host on an other website if you like.

If you still want me to delete you please let me know.

I would recommend reading every post even by another player. and replies.
Right know I have this one game and very few players. BUT as we all know Real Life tends to get in the way of RPing so if some asks a question that I may have already answered or even maybe answered indirectly - I may over look it.

I'm not trying to be rude. But lots of personalities and people do things differently so its hard to communicate feelings and words in short "text" style replies.

As you all may have notice I'm pretty detailed and I try to cover as many aspects of the Online Same as I came. Play by Post is not as easy as it sounds.

Thanks

It's probably best not to completely ignore enquiries, DM. Players wait patiently for responses that they're not to know will never come, including my penultimate enquiry: "DM, just checking, have you inadvertently overlooked my latest enquiry?"

Have I missed the cutoff for starting with the rest of the group?

Hey thanks for the reply :)

NO, you can still join up. The cut off was just to get in at the tavern intro. Which is still on the way.

I tend to post deadline so we can move the RPing along. You can enter the game when your ready. Even when they are traveling. You can meet up on a ship or on the road.

I do have an off site website that some player like to use. I actually like this site, but have not used it in years so I too would have to learn it again.

let me know I will fill in the sheet as you create the character.

He is safe in Basir and its capital. But some people may not like him around - especially in Tokis.
He is Kalamaran Noble by rank and birth. He may or may not be a citizen ? being a citizen means service in the imperial army which is not yet directly involved with the war efforts.

Not sure if you every saw the TV show Rome. Which they fight each other and in massive war and then politically call it something else after it's all done.

Right now Pekal is call is a conflict of independence
And Tokis is calling them traitors to the empire.
The Emperor has not taken a firm position so to leave his interference open
BUT he has orderd all trade too and from Pekal as illegal
"if they wish Independence then lets allow them to support themselves without interference for a time"

I will work out the detail and maybe some of the above could change.

Bottom line your safe for now :)

I check on this and pretty much on the money :)

below is the link to my site with current an up to date info.

https://sites.google.com/site/...rincipality-of-pekal

I have noticed some sites with added info. I am going by the books and Pekal is rule by a monarch not a senate. and so is Tokis (ruling King).

Both are part of the kalamar empire on paper. Pekal has declared Independence and Tokis has been given the task of getting them back in the fold.

There is 10 years of info to add How it started and were it is now). I will do my best and finish Pekal first then cross reference with Basir and finally finish with Tokis. That should give all player all the info for these areas and make sense of it all.

All right, yes, this is what I wanted to know, the Pekal-Tokis war was clear, but not so much Kalamar and the Emperor's point of view.

That helps, thanks! And I assume encountering Tokis citizen in Basir wouldn't be too infrequent as well, so perhaps Esparam should still be on his guard even if Basir is not hostile...

I guess he wouldn't be considered a citizen from a Kalamaran perspective (only from a Pekalese one). He may have served the Pekalese government, but that's a discussion to have in PMs so as to not spoil fellow players :D

Hi everyone

some i will add a house rules for crits soon

a natural 20 is always a hit regardless of the DC.
a natural 20 is an auto crit.

every weapon hits and crits on a natural 20.

if you crit with a 18-20 and you bonues etc make a crit then noral to confirm is needed.

i will work on the wording and post in guild for player soon

Re: Chit Chat

OK, so I finished the edits and I think I got the wording right.

So basically a natural 20s hits, does x2 automatic no confirm needed.
And spells to not apply to this rule.
The rest of crit for combat is the same.

There is also a crit for skills etc etc, and a 20 always is a success :)

Re: Chit Chat

Ok, so if I recall right, 20 is an automatic success on every roll except for skills. The house-rule is that skills also benefit from that, correct? Conversely, is a 1 always a fail even if it overcomes the skill DC?

As for weapons, let's say an ax (20/x3). If I roll a natural 20, I am guaranteed a x2 crit, and if I confirm the crit with a second attack roll, then it's "upgraded" to a x3 (and otherwise still a x2 and not a normal attack). Is that correct?

Re: Chit Chat

In reply to Narrator (msg # 76):

On my end it looks like Catweazle logged in today?

From my experience, it might be beneficial to explain that players have some degree of narrative freedom. I used to play with a GM that took all "narrative power" and the story was exclusively told by him, not the players. Now I play with another GM that is much more about collaborative narration, where players have a say in the story (eg: "you're going to a new country. What kind of country is it, what have your characters heard about it?" and he fleshes the story out from our answers). The transition was fairly weird for me, to now be involved in the narrative process.

All that to say that, I don't know if you have already told them, but perhaps explicitly saying "don't wait for me as the GM to introduce you into the game, post your own introduction yourselves and I'll play along with it" may be necessary for some players. Maybe that's one of the reasons why we haven't heard yet from them?

@Sombre: We need a system to keep track of prepared spells. I like your system but I'm not nerdy enough to replicate it. Can we do something on the character sheets? Maybe there is another way besides the character sheet? Suggestions...

Btw, I ALWAYS have to correct your name because autocorrect keeps changing it to 'Sombrero!'

I don't really know what to do with spells either. But really that's the case for everything that sees frequent changes, like inventory as well.

SpellForge is easy enough if you want to invest a few minutes getting to know the Excel file (but then you need to take care of hosting it somewhere).

Another solution is what we did back on BMT, which was a dedicated thread where we would keep track of small inventory changes and spells.

À dedicated Pm thread to GM(s) for each character could work too.

And maybe that external website Caladin spoke about earlier has something that could help?

Haha yeah I figure it can be annoying!
Just spell it the American way, I don't mind :p
It comes from my very first nickname on NWN which was in French, anyway

In reply to Caladin (msg # 96):

Nah, I'm not in Japan anymore, I finished my exchange year abroad since then. I went back for a few months for an internship before graduating, but now I've been back in France with a job for a couple of years.
But mostly, I actually lived there rather than spent holidays there, so my stories are quite different and maybe not as interesting as what a tourist can tell. I was a broke student who had to study :p (plus the yen soared when I went so it made things all the more expensive)

Going to Japan may not be too expensive if you plan it well! Just avoid touristy seasons: Spring (or at least, not during cherry blossom season), Summer (touristy and too hot).
I think you should be able to get something affordable in Fall (plus, you get to see the Japanese maples at this time of the year), or in Winter (outside of Christmas and NYE).
Also maybe don't go to Tokyo as it's super expensive, and try to go elsewhere: Fukuoka, Sapporo, Osaka are great cities as well for instance. Plus, if you want a real feel of Japan, you need to get out of Tokyo (it's definitely a place to check out, but that's not where you'll really discover Japan).

Re: Chit Chat

In reply to Narrator (msg # 122):

So I went back to the very first campaign we played since it's still up.
It more or less goes like this:

  1. You post at the beginning of each round the list of characters and foes, with their init and damage taken/status in effect.
  2. Players post in OOC their actions, not necessarily in the initiative order, and they post an empty post in IC in the init order. (If GMs can post as a separate character while still allowing its player to edit it, this may make it even faster if GM and co-GMs can pre-post for players.)
  3. When players have the result of their rolls confirmed by the GM, they can edit their placeholder post in IC with flavour text.

This makes it possible for players to write their own flavour text for the round without having to wait for the previous player. The latter will then be able to add their own flavour text later, the whole party already knowing whether it's a hit or miss, etc. from OOC and thus being able to continue the fight.

Late flavour text of course has to be consistent with posts that come after it, there can't be any retro-editing (eg. Thelonius can't cut the goblin's arm if Tarrano, who plays chronologically after him but has written flavour text before him, has shot an arrow in the same arm).

General tips would also be:
  • Players could allow GM and co-GMs to roll for them when a roll is asked (eg: Listen, Spot, Search, and so on)
  • Players should be proactive and roll what they deem adequate without asking for GM to tell them what to roll, based on the action they wish to do. eg: proactively rolling a Climb check to patrol around the camp fire in the mountain. Better to roll an unnecessary check than to slow the game down by not rolling it and having the party waiting for you.

Re: Chit Chat

There's a few variations on a theme, but one alternative:

1) Initiative is only rolled to see who beats the monsters. After that, it's us-them-us-them-us-them.

2) People state their actions in their post and roll appropriate rolls. They probably don't know if they hit or not (unless it's really obvious).

3) At the end of the round (the 'round' being when it's the monsters' turn), the DM posts the results of all the actions by players, as well as 'his bit', the monsters' turn.

That's basically it, and there are many additions and caveats that can get added to that without making it a long, drawn-out process. But it is quick.

Additions can include abandoning initiative after the first round (where the quick ones have already used their advantage), and all actions and turns are executed in the order in which players post. That is HEAPS easier on all involved, but some people get quite anal about initiative, despite the fact that it's a pretty pointless statistic beyond round 1.

Also, posting AC's, HP, one or both, to allow players to know when they've hit, but a higher proportion of DM's don't like that. For some reason, they prefer to punish those players who don't cheat by looking at the Monster Manual ;), and choose to keep AC's etc secret :)

Posting in OOC to be placed in IC after DM's have adjudicated just won't work in PBP format. Well, it WILL work, but it will be so slow that combat will be tedious and a chore, rather than exciting and free-flowing.

There are just some allowances you have to make because of the already-slow format of pbp. Having placeholders in IC, waiting for DM's to tell you whether you've hit, etc, is just extra waiting around that isn't necessary.

To cover some scenarios, most DM's who use the above method (pretty much all of them in one guise or another) will allow players to ask if something is dead before making a choice about their own turn, but it does require the DM to be looking in regularly else it slows things down.

Also, when things are running smoothly, if a character's attack is null because the skeleton he was attacking was killed by a previous poster, then the DM can just switch the attack to the nearest other skeleton, etc etc etc.

Many options and variations on a theme, but it saves an enormous amount of time and helps combat to retain some of the fun that it harbours in tabletop gaming.

This is pretty much how it's been done in most 3.5e games I've been in on Rpol.

Re: Chit Chat

I see.

quote:
1) Initiative is only rolled to see who beats the monsters. After that, it's us-them-us-them-us-them.

I play IRL in another setting where the initiative is team-based, and it's true that it could make things smoother to use a team initiative rather than individual initiative. And then actions are done in the order of the posts.

quote:

3) At the end of the round (the 'round' being when it's the monsters' turn), the DM posts the results of all the actions by players, as well as 'his bit', the monsters' turn.

One drawback I see with what you describe is that it puts a lot of narrative power on the GM at the expense of the players' creativity. I personally prefer to know the results of my character's action so that I can write and embellish flavour text, rather than just post the action and let the GM describe what happens. This may make things slower, but for me, it would make things much, much more enjoyable. I like to be able to describe a certain fighting style for instance, which adds to the character's substance.

quote:

Regarding AC and HP, I admit as a player, I prefer not to know (and merely guess). I prefer being told IC that the monster is gravely injured than to know it has 12hp left. This is about being surprised and keeping the suspense alive for me, as I play for the story and unexpected development more than just to roll dice. And thus I prefer those stats to be secret, so they don't spoil the story for me (eg realising this monster has a higher than usual stat because it's elite or important to the story, buffed by an invisible spellcaster or whatnot).

But clearly, for PbP it is not ideal, and if I had to choose between the suspense of the roll's result and the narrative creativity that comes with being able to instantly know the result, then I think I'd choose knowing HP/AC. Although as a wizard, saves may remain an issue.

I'm looking forward to see what the others think about how we should proceed with combat.

I would like to tackle this one line at a time.

I think one Initiative Roll per combat sequence.

A combat sequence is when initiative is needed. And ends when no more Combat Actions are taken.

I like this better then group initiative because it allows a player or creature to hold an action and gives an equal chance.

For example if a group of goblins win and they all team up against one player he could be out before the fight even begins. Same of course goes for the creature. But if we all roll and go in order of an 'Initiative List' it allows a player to move over and heal, or stand in the way of an opponent to protect etc etc.
I just find old school D&D style 'us-them-us-them-us-them' to be less fair all around.

I will say that if any two groups meet I would take out wizard first, If undead the cleric, If terrain was an issue the range fighter, etc etc. just like any player would.

Give this some thought. Please post what you would like Group Initiative or Individual Initiative

I will say we do not roll every round once a pecking order its given we follow that order unless an action is on hold which moves that person next on list or something effects the order. There are advantages to this. We can also say that every 5 rounds calls for a new initiative roll or some other house rule.

I'm just not a fan of Group Individual.

This one I think is actually easy. I post the DC/TN and or AC etc etc for each creature. So a player makes his rolls and posts. You know right away if you succeeded or not (not needed to wait for DM). No need to hide it in most cases. If the DC/TN and or AC needs to be secret then we will have to play it as it goes.

I'm also worry about players over stepping or assuming actions out of turn. The first player says he chops of the hand of the target because he rolled a 20 and max damage, Yes it's a great hit and Yes maybe the creature is dead (which is fine to say the hand was removed). But what if the creature was alive, you now just said he has no hand ?? can he still attack - realistic NO - and he would take negatives for the loss of a hand etc etc. This is the point we need to set an understanding before we get to combat.

I want players to have full control over THEIR characters and actions but the descriptions need to be done so it's fair all around. I can list Hit Points so if a player did enough damage he/she can post without worries.

Again in some cases the Hit Points will be secret and we will need to adjust accordingly.

I don't see this as an issue I only keep key info, spell lists, and these type of things secret to keep the challenge up. The info on a goblin, or any other adventure encounter can be open knowledge The stuff that should be secret are thing that have a counter effect if failed, like a trap. Or the lead villains.

  • 1 - I would prefer individual Init at least to start and then go by posting order once things are started. One GM I was in would after everyone roll Init create starter posts in the Init Order for people to edit in their actions. Another Has everyone go in order the first round and then it's just posting order.

quote:
As an example, PC1 15 Init, PC2 12 Init, PC3 5 Init. NPC1 18 Init, NPC2 7 Init.

1st round - NPC1 Goes, then PC1, then PC2, NPC2, PC3
2nd Round - NPC1 Goes PC1 or PC2 goes based upon when they post, then NPC2, Then PC3.

  • 2) I would just post the Monsters AC and DC's. Leave the descriptive text to the players where they can say they feinted this way, then reversed the blade to strike. the DM would then determine what his wounds look like.

I like and agree, almost what I was looking for.
Just a few mechanics to think about. Holding an action so a player can react.
And
Time waiting if we go with posting in order (Players have to agree they can be skipped if they don't post within 24hr) We have to be strict not like we have been with the ICs so far in intros.

What about a Combat Thread ?? and then we move the info over with a finial post ??

Re: Chit Chat

1) Doing it with individual inits and running a combat with them takes far, FAR too long. It's not just the players who need to post one at a time, it's the DM, which means in a group of 6 hobgoblins we will have to wait up to 6 times per round for the DM to log back into the game and post his actions for an individual monster. That's just not going to work. With six players and six interjections by the DM a round will take more than a week, and in fact can take up to 12 days without NPCing anyone 'to prevent it dragging on'. Way too long for combat.

2) Combat threads aren't useful. It's just another screen one has to toggle between to see what has gone on. If everyone, players and DMs alike post their rolls AND ACTIONS below their IC post in orange (stock standard on this site), then other players can determine for themselves what has transpired without having to rely on the prose above from each participant. Most people misrepresent their rolls and actions when they try to describe them, or don't include everything. Including rolls and actions in orange down below allows others to know exactly what has happened.

3) Tarrano's idea still breaks up inits into too many individual waiting periods. If you tack a 24-hour rule onto each of those brackets, each round will still take a week to get through. That's up to three months for one combat. Good luck with that.

I'm just offering my insights from long experience of seeing how not to do it. It's up to the DMs as to how they want to run combat. But if you don't make allowances for the pbp format, the game will get heavily bogged down in combat, and no amount of flowery repartee describing one's swordstroke will make up for having had to wait nearly two weeks since your last one :)

I'll agree with Cat on the combat thread, especially for those that use mobile having to swap between threads can get tedious.

Personally I have never had a combat take that long with the 24Hour rule plus the init example I posted. At most combat has taken like 3 days but yes these have been low level combats so higher level ones could take longer.

For as long as I've been gaming, DM's usually only have like 1-3 different iniative's to go on, Monster Group A, Leader 1, Leader 2, etc... So a group of hobgoblin's would all go at the same time for simplicity sake.

Re: Chit Chat

Catweazle:
1) Doing it with individual inits and running a combat with them takes far, FAR too long. It's not just the players who need to post one at a time, it's the DM, which means in a group of 6 hobgoblins we will have to wait up to 6 times per round for the DM to log back into the game and post his actions for an individual monster. That's just not going to work. With six players and six interjections by the DM a round will take more than a week, and in fact can take up to 12 days without NPCing anyone 'to prevent it dragging on'. Way too long for combat.

With DM not an issue. First I log in daily and sometimes post 4+ times a day. Yes some days better then others. YES weekends will be slower then weekdays, but I can commit that if I am not traveling I will stay active on weekends for combat.

Eldon Trush is the only NPC, others are players.
So the party currently comprises 1 npc and 4 players as Caladin said, and will be 1+5 when Catweazle will have joined the group in IC (so far, in his corner of the tavern and hasn't interacted with the now loud group in the middle).

Please if anyone wants to continue this do so here in this thread.

Thank you Esparam

Yes, actually you and I meet through Gars some *8 years ago online through Zeta Boards, I think it was called Nights of the Templar rpg group. I came to this site after playing with you guys and that adventure came to an end.

General Gars and I have played since way back when and on and off for about 25 years.

Since its come up - I will say I have been playing since 6th grade. (lol , I still remember hiding the books from my teacher and rolling die under my flip top desk)
GOD THOSE WERE JUST GREAT TIMES!
And I started D&D with the Black and Blue Book. That dates back before the red box set. Which by the way I still have the original red book that also pre-dates the red box.

Online I have been playing and DMing for about 12 years (I think, its a blur). Starting back after Never Winter Nights (again not sleeping much back then it a bigger blur). As far as free-form, Yes my Game of Thrones rpg is super heavy RPing with little rolling and fantastic writing by everyone. I managed 18 players on average on those games. By the way thank you for reading my material.

I actually had many games here. They went inactive and RPOL delete all trace of them :(

Deadlands D20
L5R (two games)
Star Blazers (anime)
And several other Kingdom of Kalamar games hosted here.
I did not delete them RPOL removed them for being inactive.

If your interested in knowing more, I have some stuff I have done over the years my screen names are

Caladin
Lord Caladin
kok.caladin
Lord Caladin's Court

If you google these I should come up. The avatar 'Caladin' comes up by others a few times but a lot of that stuff is my game creations over the years.

With regards to D&D I stopped at D&D 3.5e. I am not interested in playing 4th or 5th and since I have every book, pdf and countless modules for D&D to D&D 3.5e I don't feel the need to buy any more.

About our game and its direction, my style of play & DMing, ..... I have to say the Esparam hit it square on the chin. For me rules are for how to handle issues as they arise. And I'm not trying to be confrontational but these are RPGs 'Roleplaying' being the key word, And even the site is Rpol again 'Roleplaying'. Now, I thought I understood what you were looking for and yes you did say what you wanted. If we miss-understood each other it happens and no hard feeling on my part I will exit out the character and good luck with your gaming.

In fact I recommend username REZ - if I remember correctly from years ago he plays many games and they are straight D&D 3.5e from the rules books and maybe more inline with what you have noted in your last post.

For the record I am not throwing you out, just trying to get pass this. Before you reply just think about if so far you like what you see. If not let me know and I will RP you character out.

So let go over what we agree on for IC COMBAT so far.

1. OOC will be posted in IC as "Soiler" text.
2. DM will post initiative and rounds with the order and notes at the start of every round.
Also DM will post as needed and when special actions are taken. If it can effect the initiative order it get noted and posted.
3. Players will have info needed so they can roll and post freely as combat progresses.
DCs, HPs, weapon and adjustments. etc etc

I know there is more please correct, and or add to what you feel is needed so it can play right and work as you and I except. Lets keep working on this so when done we can post and make our combat format official.

My two cents:
- OOC in spoiler should be only rolls and mechanics (such as giving AC etc.),whereas discussion (such as when I noted Esparam was not critted, or requests for more information like "how far am I from the archers?") belong to the separate OOC thread in my opinion.
- I personally prefer only one spoiler tag,ie all IC written at once and then all OOC written in a single spoiler tag, as opposed to having IC cut off by spoiler tags (eg: the post about goblins attacking Tarrano and Esparam)
- I agree it could help and be more practical to use Tarrano's idea for combat

I would hope that we are all grown up enough that AC and HPs isn't an issue of sharing with each other. I find it helps with expedience for both the players and DM. A DM doesn't have to go look up each players AC every time as it will be in the thread. And the players (specifically healers) can see that a player's hps are getting low readily. We could do % if people prefer but numbers are just easier and more direct.

I do like to keep some info private if I feel there is a possibility of surprising and unexpected roleplay for other players. Hence why my spell list is private for instance.

I don't think HP and AC fall into that category. Anyone can look at Esparam and see how wounded he is, or how armoured or how deftly he dodges blows (or not). And likewise, Esparam can determine who he should cast Protections on at a glance.

I seem to find that everyone has different idea of whats RP heavy or light means. I try to keep a good mix. Right now its RP heavy because the group and adventure is still forming up. And the encounters have been interaction with NPC and players.

Once we get into the game I tend to have one action sequence per chapter of the game. a Charpter is 1 to 3 IC threads. Keeping in mind that combat itself can be one IC. And player can talk their way out of fights - into fights and sometimes yu may have ot run away from a fight.

Now its time to rmail those that have not logged on in more then 24 hrs. And I'm not counting the weekend so by tomorrow if I don't have any post from some players I may NPC them for a bit or if those players don't come back to post I could play them out of the adventure.

At the moment every player has a chance to post. They can interact with the dock master, now the captain or their character might want to do something at this point. If there is nothing of interest even post a thought in IC of what they are thinking like they are not interested. :)

Also a player can pick their intro at this point like already be on the deck as a passenger or on the docks looking to get on the ship.

Re: Chit Chat

As something that may give us additional ideas on how to run our combats. I still think it should be everyone before monsters go in what ever order, monsters go, everyone after monsters go in what ever they post in.

LonePaladin:
Here's another way that might work, if you have the right players: make all the mechanical bits visible on the surface.

When a fight breaks out, go ahead and roll initiative for everyone. Unless someone has an ability that is used during an initiative roll (and to my knowledge, there aren't any in 5E), or some way to alter their roll, there's no reason to have to wait on all the players to roll their own.

Consider grouping enemies together; if there are four goblins and a bugbear, you might want to just make one roll for the goblins and have them act as a group.

Post everyone's status in a table, using the Easy Table. (You can find how to make them in the Help page.) Keep it simple, just list every combatant in order with their AC and hit points (and maybe saves) and a section for any status effects. This way everyone can see who is in what shape. Don't bother hiding monster hit points, that just slows things down.

Whenever a player posts their action, they should be able to tell success or failure immediately because you've posted all the enemies' defenses. Let the players roll everything they need to write their actions up, including enemy saving throws. Have them post the results, and copy-paste the table at the end with the effects added in.

If they do it this way, and post frequently enough that everyone can post in their initiative order, then each player knows the current state of the fight when their turn comes up, and you don't have to worry about conflicting actions or people left hanging because they don't know if they hit or not.

So I have no problem with LonePaladin recommendations.

I thinking grouping is fine. I do separate groups based on weapon types and conditions.
Showing all the stats is also ok, as long as player use the description rolls properly. I will not accept some making a roll and its low and they say it was a skill check to hind a bad roll.

I will say that there should be some order to avoid players going to far ahead in the action so I would stick to my round base set up so not to get confused in the middle of a fight.

Yeah it was just an idea on what additional ideas for us to try. I agree there should be some order but I really think if you have it set like this saying PC's 1,2 rolled higher Init's then Monsters 1,2, but PC's 3,4 rolled lower then Monsters 1,2, but still higher than say Monster 3.

So you would have in what ever order the players post in but still following the groupings based upon init rolls.

PC 1, PC 2
then
Monster 1,2
PC 3, PC 4,
Monster 3

Yes thats the way I like doing it.

I think It allows for more action and better roll playing.

I mean if you take out the leader in round one I don't see  the rest sticking around for the rest of the fight but a commitment it given by making the rolls, and it would be kind of cheating to say after the rolls they run. Or if the rolls where good stick around for some pot shoots.

See what I'm getting at.

Sharing info is easy, but I don't want to explain by the rules why the goblin has a 22 a/c, ALSO this gives away stuff like "he must have a magic ring or something. Which now every greedy player goes for the dead body searching it until they find what gave that goblin a 22 a/c

I understand that and in at a table that is much easier to "Hide" then in PbP and continue with the pace to keep things fun & interesting. The nature of PbP is why providing the basic stats is reasonable to make it so players know if they hit or if their spells work or don't work and can write it in their description of actions. And I do agree, the rolls need to be labeled properly in the actual roller so that you know what and why they are doing something.

IE: Attack Goblin A, or Spell at Goblin B/C due to AoE, etc.

Personally, since I know you like to provide players with challenging fights, I don't expect monsters to be simply taken from the Manual with no modification. So a 22AC goblin wouldn't necessarily make me tick. It could be it has higher than average AC, or a masterwork armour (that gets destroyed during the fight?), or it uses Combat Expertise, or whatever.

I suppose story and challenge are above rules for me, and I don't mind bending the rules to benefit the story.

As for labeling rolls, I believe so far everybody has done so, so this shouldn't be an issue.
However, I wonder if I can roll saves for monsters if I have the stats? Say Esparam casts a Colour Spray, should I wait for you to roll, or can I roll the saves? (then again, I might need to wait for you anyway to know who I (can) hit with my spells)

I really think we are all on the same page. There will be a fight sooner or later. I dont see an issue so far. I think as long as everyone logs in and posts timely a fight show go smooth. We we can get a round in every 1 to 2 days that and the average fight is about 5 round we should be ok.

That not to say some fights will be 1 round and others epic.

I'm still getting the feel of playing this character. At first I was going to play an entitled and arrogant warrior but I'm liking a more diplomatic way of playing him so far. Barring his youthful brashness of course.

Hello

So a quick update

I had to drop one player today :(. And one player showed interest in that same type of character so I moved it over and will reach out to him so he can take over that PC. If not I will run him as an NPC, I like his design.

A second player I sent a message last week request to come back. If I don't get a reply in next 24 hrs I will drop that player also.

I will do exps over the next 24hrs and we can update sheets - and move on to the next part of this adventure.

Hello

So my Babylon 5 D20 game has taken a very good start.
We have about 8 players.
And IC started in that game.

I have been trying to get my GoT game back in the right direction and it's been slower then I expected. The good news we have interest, and many of those that were in the game before - come back.
It's been a challenge but I really want that game to come back since I spent so much time designing the setting for it.

This game, I also spent days week, months on end - collecting and combining the settings of Eberron, Kalamar and Rokugan (L5R) as one world. And I really look forward to GMing it for everyone.

So just know It will happen and I will pick up from our last adventure.

Keep the chat moving and character/game discussion going because that develops more interest and really helps everyone stay motivated with an online games.

I live in mid-town NYC. And things here are crazy, BUT also very quite.
My position is on the Essential List of workers.
I am a building engineer, and responsible to make sure these massive hi-raises stay working.

A/C, water, heat etc etc..... so I will have some free time. Thankfully I am not sick nor exposed yet so I am working. And I hope everyone will be safe and stay happy in these interesting times.

Happy Easter!
All is well.
I’m still working on my Basic Red Box game.
Seems light rule light works better online.
