"We must pursue, Walkers", stated Eris even as Erin notched another arrow, "We cannot leave the .... noodle-armed beast. Not with the settlement above"

They turned to Attlisk, "You and the Brethren are welcome to accompany us"

Attilisk nods wearily.  "I speak only for myself.  I'd be content to crack its skull if need be, but if we can find a way to simply send it back where it came from, I'd prefer that path."  He winces as he stands and puts some pressure on the spot that the pipe had impacted him.  "I don't want that thing any more mad at me than it already is."

"Just a bit, if it's no trouble.  I'll live, either way."  He moves closer to Eleisai.  "What means of attack have you found effective so far?  Perhaps a simple strike with my staff would be best, as my aim seems less than perfect today."

He pats his bag.  "If we have a few minutes to prepare, and the brethren can tell us just when that thing arrived, we may be able to glean a clue as to how it got here, and so how to send it back."

Re: [In-Character Threat] Deciphering Tomorrow

Seeker relaxes slightly when the tentacle-beast retreats, but does not release the glow of his hands.  "It arrived a cycle ago!  Delfino said that to you," he says, slowly going to the doorway and peeking around the corner cautiously.  "It's not in sight now, though I think it is drawn to us, understandably."  Delfino nods, and you're fairly certain that jiggle the six small Cubes give is some sort of nod as well.  They stack themselves up until they are nearly as Cube, and glide around the floor in two towers of three each, seemingly examining the other pods.

Attilisk sees that the pod they came from was damaged beyond repair, and can salvage that one if he wishes.

Eris, Erin, Q'nur, and Eleisai, you can spy something else that was knocked free when the tentacle beast attacked - the room has some panels marked with glowing symbols and small wisps of smoke in strangely confined patterns, one of which is up on the wall where the fitting was knocked out, the other atop the doorway where Delfino was looking into the hallway.

Re: [In-Character Threat] Deciphering Tomorrow

"Seeker, I need to narrow the time down a bit to be more useful, I think.  The cypher I have has a very limited amount of time it can view.  I would be glad of your help in targeting the period to be displayed.  We have but ten minutes of the past that may be revealed to us."  He held out the device for inspection, to the extent Seeker or Delfino wanted to assist.

Mentally, he planned ahead for the salvaging operation, preferring to settle the beast issue before settling down to dismantle the broken pod.

Re: [In-Character Threat] Deciphering Tomorrow

When the concept of "minutes" is mentioned, Delfino, Seeker, and possibly the mini-cubes (though they might be just jiggling nearby) spend some time questioning Attilisk about these units of time.  When the concept of seconds, minutes, hours, days, years, and decades is established, the Brethren can give Attilisk a better idea of what they mean.

"The creature we saw emerged eighteen hours ago" Delfino says with confidence.  "Our cycle is eighteen of your hours."

Attilisk can take about fifteen minutes to salvage the damaged pod.

Attilisk dials the viewing cypher to about 1 minute before the creature appears and activates it.  He tries to hold the device in such a way that as many people as possible can see the events of the phasing-beasts arrival.

Re: [In-Character Threat] Deciphering Tomorrow

When Attilisk employs the viewing cypher, a twelve-sided window, lined with silvery blue light, stretched into the air to reveal the past 18 hours ago.  The pod room looks entirely intact in the window, a faint, silvery dust falling from the ceiling constantly.  Then an ocher ripple of light stretched across the doorway to the room, spreading open like a sickening smile.  From inside it, the tentacle-beast emerged, the area behind it looking like a churning malestrom of dirt, energy, and glowing particles.   The tentacle beast heaves itself out, and the room abruptly stops glowing, the silver dust ceasing.  One of the tentacles brushes a pod, likely the one that was damaged when Q'nur first came in here.  After a long moment, the pod splits, and a second tentacle beast emerges.  The pod seals up behind it, and the first tentacle-beast shrieks in what sounds like rage.  The second echoes it, howling even louder.  Then both move, seemingly chasing each other in a frenzied fury out of your line of sight!

Not particularly well suited to this kind of investigation work the Cube focus on the smaller coppies consuming them one by one as the others do stuff.  Quiet but not fully silent the process is slow and methodical.

Re: [In-Character Threat] Deciphering Tomorrow

Cube finds the smaller copies nimbler than it, but after a few moments of chasing them through the maze of pods, is able to integrate each back into itself.  There are a few fragments of speech that come through before each is consumed, but no more than a few words.

Seeker and Delfino look rather sad as Cube consumes the mini-Cubes.

"Are you attempting to integrate enough pre-Form formula to initiate a full doubling?" Delfino asks.

Seeker wrenches his gaze away from Cube to examine the picture that had formed of the past.  "Perhaps the tentacle-beast initially came here because of a weakness in this area? But the creation of a secondary Form seems to have startled it. Perhaps the attacks have been because one is chasing the other?"

The older woman hands glow gently as she lays them near his wounds.

"The attacks of friend Cube have been quite effective.  Arrows and Nano bolts have also been useful, as was that explosion..."

"Perhaps if we could better understand the nature of these Forms, we could better understand the cause of the attacks.  That creature is highly intelligent, enraged, and hungry.  It is also multi-dimensional.  Would the Form of that creature share those traits?"

Her eyes move to the exposed panels.

"Please, do you know what the symbols on these panels signify?"

"It would... to a point.  We share a Form, once it is made available.  When new genetic material is sampled, bits of outer tissues, inner fluids, etc, the Form is then made available to the Brethren.  The best way to test a new Form is to duplicate it as exactly as possible.  The Brethren have long been inactive, or so I estimate, and so it took a while to regain full function of the Form once it was taken.  If the originator of the Form was inherently hostile, the Brethren would have been as well.  But if then the Brethren wanted to engage in non-hostile relations, after a period of adjustment, the originator of the Form might have found that... unsettling?" Seeker says, his voice rising at the last.

Her eyes move to the exposed panels.

"Please, do you know what the symbols on these panels signify?"

"Hmm," Delfino looks at them, curious.  "Less familiar to me.  Something something... door?  Something up something power... meter?  Extrude something quiche plumb-bob something tailfeather?"  He suddenly looks embarrassed.  "Um... likely some translation errors on that last one.  The symbols are only a little like some I've seen before."

Cube:

Seeker's eyebrows raise and he looks at the others.  "Form-folder Cube has a valuable insight: if the hostile original Form was unique and saw another of its kind, that might have caused the extreme agitation that caused it to surface to your place above, and attack this room again, because it is trying to find the Brethren and eliminate it."

Attilisk does a double-take as he realizes that wobbly box can speak.  His eyes widen and it takes a moment for him to shake the look of disbelief off his face.  Eventually, he returns his attention to more pressing matters.

"Is there a way to track the monster brethren?  If we find it, could you convince it to change forms so as not to enrage the large original monster?" Attilisk says to no one in particular as he approaches the unknown script, trying to see if it is at all familiar.

Erin and Eris exchange a glance, both nodding simultaneously, before they each go to examine the ciphered cyphered Delfino had attempted to translate. It is Eris who speaks, confirming their own belief in the theory put forward, "Perhaps it is territorial... or simply belligerent in nature. Regardless, it is engaged about this place, and perhaps the Brethren"

"Perhaps it can be tracked or lured away before it comes back to do lasting harm?  Once Formed, we only retain certain base knowledge, but the pod where it came from may retain some semblance of the original Form," Delfino says, turning to Attilisk.  "Perhaps the parts you have might serve in that way?"

Attilisk finds the symbols rather familiar from tomes he has read in the past, and he finds some insight there.  As he examines the remains of the pod, he finds the section that the tentacle beast had initially touched, then converts some of the parts of the pod that detected new input to extending its range, added a segment of the glowing wire that seemed to serve as a power source, fed the pod fragment in, and there!  It begins to hum slightly off-key.  As Attilisk turns, the hum changes tone until it becomes very discordant when turned away from the hallway, and very pure when pointed towards the hallway.

The older woman considers thoughtfully.

"Hopefully it will not come to that.  I know that it is intelligent.  Who knows what cause it may have for the actions it has taken?"

"I do not relish taking life, if it can be avoided.  For it is written, 'Thou dost not murder.'  The Sovereign One has commanded, and I must obey."

Attilisk holds the "detector" in his left hand, quarterstaff ready in his right.  He advances slowly, constantly checking for obstacles or threats.
