I just assumed people would like to continue to advance to within a good range of attack (short to immediate) the next round, so carried on with that.  If you wanted to do something else, please do let me know.

Acia and Fen, you can give me two rounds' worth of actions once you get a chance to post!

Everyone needed an extra turn of action to move closer, so I basically did an extra round where people just moved.  The nasty beastie was occupied by its prey for that round, so now, this round, you are all close enough to act.

If you wanted to use your second round to do something other than move, just say so.  :)

GM:
Cube's grip is relentless and painful, and the creature reacts very violently, lashing out at everyone with its remaining tentacles.  Instead of contacting them, rocks from the disrupted ground begin to float around it, along with one silvery, glowing chunk of what looks like numenera of some sort.  It screams as it flings out the projectiles with invisible force.

OOC: Speed check DT 6 to avoid 6 points of damage.

The chunk of numenera it tries to push into Cube, leaking a violently orange light.

Is this Speed check for Cube or for everyone?  O_o

*points to rules and game terms thread*

quote:
Damage

When a character takes damage, unless stated otherwise, the damage is subtracted from the Might pool first.  If that is at 0, then damage is subtracted from the Speed pool, and then finally from the Intellect pool.  Armor counts damage reduction against physical attacks (melee, ranged, esoteries that cause physical damage, etc.)

A character has 4 levels of health:
  • Hale – normal, all three stat pools at 1 or higher, with no harmful conditions.  If a hale PC takes enough damage to reduce one of his stat Pools to 0, he becomes Impaired.
  • Impaired – Effort costs 1 extra point.  Ignores minor and major effects results on rolls.
  • Debilitated – Cannot take actions other than to move (probably crawl) no more than an immediate distance.  If a debilitated character’s Speed pool is 0, he can’t move.
  • Dead – is dead.

So you become impaired if your Might Pool goes to 0.

1 Pool at 0 = Impaired
2 Pools at 0 = Debilitated
3 Pools at 0 = Dead

This being Numenera, going Dead doesn't necessarily mean dying.  I mean, it's Numenera.  There might be artifacts to revive you, locations that could heal you, clone tanks, dimension copies, or maybe you survive after being in a coma, but you have some kind of strange side effect.  We'll cross that dimension barrier (and possibly back again) if we get there.  :)

OOC Discussion

Hey folks,

I'm Simon from Scotland, and I'll be (attempting to play) Q'nur, a Confident Delve that Exists partially out of Phase.

I'm a complete newbie to Numenera (and to the Cypher system) so I apologise now for all my upcoming questions and the continual retconning of my posts every time I get something wrong about the game world. :)

My character should be up and available for you to have a look at, so I'd appreciate it if you could run an eye over it in case I have missed anything.

My description and background will undoubtedly develop once I understand the setting and the character slightly better.

Simon

Thanks Eris's player :)

So I guess (merely from looking at the map) that would possibly make Shallmas (a town?) or Fasten as good places for Q'nur to come from? I was thinking the capital city, but that feels too cosmopolitan.

Player thoughts?

Some more (possibly newbie) questions:

Are we actually humans or human-like evolutions?
Are we all 'traditional' human looking?
Can we have atypical skin colours?
Can we have different numbers of arms / eyes / fingers / toes / tentacles
Do we have to be made of flesh and bone?

Re: OOC Discussion

This is the Ninth World, and all things are possible.

Most people are "human", but that varies a lot more than it does nowadays.  Having wildly atypical skin colors would not be overly unusual, nor having a differing numbers of fingers or toes.  If you get too much beyond human body configuration (i.e. tentacles) you would be considered a mutant, which carries a stigma in some places.  Mutant is actually a descriptor you can take, which can come with interesting powers, possible drawbacks, and some rather colorful and different changes to their forms.  If you'd like to be a mutant, let me know.

If you're not made of flesh and bone (for the most part), you might be a mutant, AI, plantform, or something of the sort, all of which carry various descriptors.  Now some people might have parts of their body replaced by another substance (metal, crystal, hard light, etc.) due to some unusual numenera, but that would not be inherent.

Did you have something specific in mind?  :)

Re: OOC Discussion

Eris, there is a small problem with your character's position and intended actions.  Eleisai, Cube, and Eris all went into the corridor.  Erin stayed behind.  A host of lizards started to march towards you three.  Eleisai Far-Stepped back, Eris ran back and Cube went forward.  Eleisai and Eris and Erin are now in the chamber they started in, the triangular opening they had gone through now caged in by lizards.

The rosy glow is coming from the end of the corridor Eris retreated from.  Cube is currently the only party member in the corridor who could go towards the rosy glow, and it is currently involved in lizard extermination.

Is there another action Eris would like to take?

Welcome aboard to the new folks!  :)

Since we haven't heard from Cube, I've been assuming that I am still stuck in the other room, and am only monitoring the interactions with the new folks by looking through Cube.

Therefore, I haven't been contributing much to the conversation thus far.

Should I continue to assume this state of affairs?  Or are we assuming that Cube has/is/will be moving aside at some point, so that Eleisai can give some nice welcome hugs?  :)

Cube's player does check in once in a while, it seems, although they post less frequently.  Maybe GM could make some minor moves to control him for the ease of conversation?  This could even be posted as Cube the character with a notation of * GM controlled.

Not sure how Cube's player would feel about that, though.

I live in Chile. I'm somewhat hopeful, this revolt was necessary and long overdue. The violence I abhor, but understand: these are people who have been delicately told for decades that they will never be anything. This time, a few govt. ministers outright mocked the poor. The level of inequality here is appalling.

I hope things improve, I hope this government finally relents and turns a bit more human. But many people in power are completely happy with the status-quo.

Re: OOC Discussion

Cube and Eleisai came down from the surface, where the tentacle beast attacked.  Went through a rent in the wall.  Found the pod room where they met Attilisk and met the Brethren (and Delfino).  Briefly encountered the tentacle beast again, and it fled.  Tracked it.  Found a big spiral ramp that led down.  Ramp has no railings and is lit on the inside by large floating insects.  Partway down the ramp was a makeshift barrier and a swarm of little insects.  Prior to the barrier is the room with the spiky ball and the "control room" you are in now.

While exploring the ramp and barrier, there was some kind of displacement incident.  Several party members disappeared and more appeared, including Paraton.  (The barrier and insect swarm vanished, though the large "light" insects remain.)  The group carried on to the bottom of the ramp, where there is a doorway to the room with the crystal cluster where you fought sathosh, and found Nu-Mar and Porgot.

In the crystal room is the crawlway to the weightless room that matches the glimmer vision from earlier, and also the image shown in the "control room" now.

Just FYI, there is another exit from the spiky ball room.  There's the control room which is off to the side, but there is a yet unexplored door (currently shut) across from the entrance from the ramp.

Elesai also recalls that where she first came into the complex (up above) there were three entrances once they'd gone through the initial hatch.  She and her companions at the time went through a triangular entrance that had been punched forcefully through the wall.  There were two more, a small round one 10 feet off the floor (similar to the one that goes into the egg room) and a more regular square entrance flanked by pipes.  When you'd last left it, a silvery mist had been making the area quite cold.

Things have calmed somewhat, the president's approval is sliding ever downwards, congresspeople took a month of holidays. There is a picture of Chile in the dictionary next to the definition of SNAFU. It's possible that things will heat up again in March, after the holidays. I'm currently working towards the efforts for a new constitution. I feel hopeful.

We three are, fortunately, just very bored from having been quarantined for more than two months. But yes, things in the country are looking very, very grim. It's very cold right now, hospitals are at capacity, unemployment is high... We're taking good care not to need a doctor for anything.
Personally, we've done all the quarantine stuff: baking bread, cooking lots of stuff, learning to play the guitar, learning to draw, buying a hummingbird feeder, inventing lots of games with my daughter, playing No Thank You, Evil! with her, bonding with her over the D&D Monster Manual (she's decreed all the monsters are, in her case, good, and made friends with the beholder)...

How are you all doing?

Haven't made friends with a beholder yet, but trying to stay safe.  My state, Wisconsin, had all our safety orders tossed by the state supreme court (idiots) so we have very minimal social protections.  Most businesses and county governments are taking it seriously, but people from neighboring states are coming here to vacation and party.  Today was the highest new case numbers yet and the death toll is accelerating also.  Hospitals in Minneapolis (next door in Minnesota) are sending patients north because they are at capacity (before the riots).

My family is safe, but overall, things will get worse before they get better.

Re: OOC Discussion

I'm in Iowa, and while things have not been as bad as they could be, our state government didn't shut things fast enough and opened things far too soon. Plus we're ground zero for some of the meatpacking plant outbreaks, so that is weighing on my mind.

I've mostly been working through the pandemic, barring three weeks on furlough, because my plant had government contracts.  It's basically impossible to do proper social distancing in many parts of the job. And it's getting very hot and humid here, so wearing a mask on the factory floor is courting heat stroke. I do wear it everywhere else I go, but really can't at work.

Husband's been off for over two months, and has been mowing through all our streaming services like they're going out of style.

Welcome back!

We found a (crashed? derelict? pandimensional?) craft in the subterranean complex.  The little floaty balls seem to help track the crew (now us).  The propulsion systems seem to be offline due to a phasing crystalline structure protruding through the hull into one of the cylinders.  We're trying to figure out how to (re)move the crystal to fix the craft.

Re: OOC Discussion

I now in a position do to an update on what happened in my neck of the woods.  Search for "Iowa derecho" if you want to see exactly what happened, but what basically was going on was that on Monday, August 10th a massive windstorm hit my area around 1:30pm (I was asleep due to my nocturnal schedule, but I woke up in a hurry).  It was a derecho, a straight-line windstorm with winds up to 100mph, though it was about 80mph in my area.  Is sounded like a freight train and looked like a hurricane, with branches and bits of roofing flying by our front windows.  We lost power shortly after the storm and didn't get it back until last evening on Friday the 15th.  We didn't get Internet back until Saturday the 16th, and spent most of Sunday and Monday replacing the food we'd lost from our fridge and ice chest and doing chores we couldn't do with the power out.  We were very lucky in that we (or my parents in the same area) didn't have any house damage and very minimal tree damage. Some folks weren't so lucky. There were trees across roads, trees on houses, and some cities had very massive property damage to a huge amount of homes and businesses (one city to the west of us has people camping in their front yards as they have no place else to stay). There are still roads shut with trees and light poles across them, and we've lost an immense amount of trees everywhere.  Every day for a week the air is alive with the sounds of generators, chainsaws, and woodchippers.  It's going to take weeks to get the branches and trees cleared that fell down during the storm, more to remove the trees that are damaged but still upright, and every third house is sporting a tarp to cover lost shingles, roof damage, or worse. We're one of the lucky ones and I am very grateful right now.

I will hopefully be able to update the game tonight or tomorrow.

Going right where you want to!  There looks to be three locations "immediate distance", one "close orbit", and five "extended distance".  The first three at least seem to be on-planet, targeting deep in the Beyond, far into the sea off the coast, or an extreme distance due south.  "Close Orbit" seems to be the Moon.  "Extended Distance" has a green indicator with high life-form readings, a flattened disk with moderate light, a darkened star with large life readings, a blue trailing indicator with a great deal of water indicated, and a pinpoint with an image of large structures.

*Eyes wide* Um ...

I'm thinking that if Attilisk is doing this, he'll probably choose the Moon.  Far enough away that something from Earth *likely can't hurt them (because he can't understand the distances on a non-Earth scale anyway) and anything else just seems so far from what he knows that it's maybe not the first step he would take.  Also, he doesn't understand that there's no air in space (or on the Moon).  Because that's just probably not common knowledge at this point in human culture.

Sound fair, compatriots?

Re: OOC Discussion

No matter where we go, there will probably be folks nearby who will want to take the ship for themselves.

I think that we are less likely to encounter other forces who will immediately attack us near the Moon.  Earth locations may well have more spiky towers and crystal lances, and other worlds may well have civilizations with inhabitants who are far more proficient with their technology than we are with ours...  :o

Of course, the Moon may well have spiky towers, crystal lances, and other civilizations... but what to do?  The only way to know is to take a peek.

So yeah, the Moon sounds like a plan to me... :)

Going to be on vacation through the 9th of November, should able to resume on the 10th. Possibly could post before then, but no promises!

Judging as an observer, it looks more like you handed it the tongs to the buffet of your mind.  And then it ate.  A lot.

If you'd like to stay connected with a mental link, you can, but it will keep draining Intellect points from you, albeit 1 per every 30 minutes.

Re: OOC Discussion

Hey everyone,

I'm sure you noticed me slowing down my posting in the last few months and weeks. While I am enjoying DMing the game, I have had a flareup (or downturn, I suppose) of my depression due to work factors, home factors, and general world issue factors, which makes it hard for me to work up the wherewithal to post appropriately, or sometimes at all.  Which then can snowball into feeling bad because I haven't posted, but then being too depressed to post, which means I feel bad I haven't posted...

You get the drift.  ;)

I am seeking appropriate professional help to get better/make things more manageable (this isn't my first rodeo). I am going to take a short DMing break whist I get through the first stage of treatment, so I hope to resume posting in just over two weeks.

Everyone remember to take care of yourselves!

Re: OOC Discussion

No worries at all.  Real Life Takes Precedence.

This game is for recreation and fun, not for creating stress as an item weighing on the to-do list.

Take whatever time you need, and don't worry about posting again until it would be fun for you to do so.

Feel free to update us on how you are doing OOC, whether or not you are ready to post IC.

Remembering you in prayer...

Paraton, how you doing down there?  I hope you've been able to stay safe!  (the rest of you, too, but there were more intense concerns with their condition last time I heard)

Re: OOC Discussion

Thank you for asking. Things have been mostly fine here. The vaccination program here in Chile is a success so far, and I got my two shots already, so on that note it's been very good. Contagions have not abated, though, so I'm still mindful of not really getting out and meeting people. Fortunately I work from home. As for my state... It's better. Depression is not over yet, but it's better.

I hope you all are doing well.
