Rumors!!!

OOC:  If you want to play the characters, it is more likely that one of the "friendly" natives (elf, dwarf, or halfling) can share with the others. As a motivator (and to keep the dice rolling) when you pick the character that you want to share their rumor, have that character make a d20+Intelligence modifier, if they roll well enough, that character will be able to share a little of the legends of the valley.

Part I: The Hidden Valley and the Gatehouse
A Haan warrior stands on a low hill, peering into the ruins skeptically. "I don't like it," he says. "Too many hiding places."

"Buck up, Altan," says his dwarven companion. "You take care of anything that jumps at us, and I'll make sure we don't blunder into a weak floor."

Two elves accompany the pair; one of them puts away the spyglass he was peering through. "I agree with him, Kilak. The central path is likely to be a trap. But there are enough gaps, we should find a way through. Just watch out for anything with a bell; I've heard that ringing bells here can have... unexpected consequences."

The other elf finishes covering their small campfire with rocks. "This should keep for a day or two, should we come back this way," she says. "Skalanis packed our gear, so we're ready."

"Thanks, Taegen," the Haan says. He climbs onto his steed, the only horse among the group of four. "Let's go."

Part I: The Hidden Valley and the Gatehouse
Another quartet stood, listening.

"You make sense," said Starfletcher, shifting her staff from one hand to the other. A breeze ruffled her hair, exposing the pointed ears that revealed her as an Elf. "Have you heard of the tiny men who don't speak? I have heard that they are the secret masters of the dungeons of Stonehell."

Brevdev the Dwarf snorted. "Tiny men who don't speak are dungeon masters? Aye, mindful we should be of recalcitrant Halflings."

"Recalcitrant? So they don't do dairy?" asked Gan, adjusting her wolfskin cloak. "Sure, yes, but the Elf is likely correct. We don't need to be walking into an obvious trap."

"Unless that's what they want us to think," said Batsaikhan the Cheesemaker. "Make us think the less obvious route is the safer one, when that's where the traps lay."

"Are you going to overthink everything for the entirety of our journey, Bat?" asked Gen.

"Er...yes. Most likely," admitted the man.

Part I: The Hidden Valley and the Gatehouse
The elf looks at his companions, as if memorizing their faces. "This place was... not a good place to be. Dark tasks were carried out here. We should make haste; our purposes do not align with this site's intent, and the longer we take the worse it could be for us."

It's obvious that there's something he's not sharing, but his expression makes it clear that he'd rather keep it to himself.

Pusswagon the Elf starts to shake and cough as a breeze kicks up.  He is often sensitive to changes in the weather.

He hopes this dungeon is kept at a reasonable temperature.

{OOC: No difference between the two that you can tell.}

As you enter the northern wall breech you see the wall that extends from the gatehouse to the canyon walls has been breached here. A rock-strewn passage allows entry into the canyon without the need to transverse the central passage of the gatehouse. Riding horses through this would be difficult, is there anyone who does not dismount?

Also...first who can post, roll a 1d6!

Altan dismounts when he sees the decline. He takes the reins with one hand, keeping his spear ready with the other. All of his companions were already on foot, much to Kilak's grumbling the night before.

Part I: The Hidden Valley and the Gatehouse
{OOC: You are Haan Horse Warriors (well, at least the humans...) all of you have mounts!

The humans have steppe ponies - think small well trained warhorse. Others have either mules, riding horse, or riding dog. You can all leave your horses outside the Gatehouse entrance (with a convenient NPC Horseholder) or bring them into the valley and leave them before entering the dungeon - up to you.}

You pass carefully through the ancient collapsed section of wall without incident. At the far side the hidden valley spreads out before you.

Nestled between limestone walls that rise 200‘ into the air, the canyon is a natural defile averaging 150‘ in width and narrowing as it extends to the west. The floor of the canyon is grassy meadow, interrupted by upward jutting spurs of rock and small stands of trees. The
sound of falling water carries from the west and intermittent droplets of moisture are born upon the breeze, providing brief relief from the late afternoon sun overhead.

A number of cave mouths are visible on the walls of the canyon: some natural, some man-made.
Within the wall of the canyon are several ruined buildings, their tumbled stone walls and rotted timbers overgrown with weeds and covered with drifts of fallen leaves. Due to time and exposure to the elements, the original purpose of these buildings is impossible to
discern.  Near the northern wall of the canyon, one building has survived the passage of years better than the rest. Although fallen in places, the walls of this building still
rise up to support the cracked arches that hold this building‘s roof aloft.

Closer at hand, you notice that to the south of the breach you just passed through is an entrance to the (back side) of the Gate House. Iron doors once stood here and their
hinges are still visible in the doorways. It looks like the door was battered open and carried away some time ago. A dark entrance to the Gate House beckons...

Part I: The Hidden Valley and the Gatehouse
The dwarf Kilak hefts his masonry hammer. "That gatehouse could be a good hideout. Give us a place to rest if we need shelter. I say we claim it."

He approaches the darkened opening, relying on his ability to see in the dark. Taegen follows suit, staff at the ready, while Skalanis covers their approach with his bow. Altan shrugs and follows a moment later, squinting into the darkness.
