Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

The trip up to Krayhold was uneventful. The adventurers escorted Sven and his wife Gerta with their pack animals through the mountain pass without incident. They are an older couple and since they have become too old for raiding they have turned into merchants; their animals mostly loaded down with raw ore and metal ingots, valuable trade goods in the metal poor north. Their clan raids out of Krayhold during the winter and will escort them upriver to Isfjall. Upon safe arrival to Krayhold they thank you and introduce you to a cousin who has room for you to stay while you're in town.

After a few days of resting, getting all their loot sold off, and equipment upgraded the adventurers are ready to catch a boat upriver when middle-aged woman frantically approaches them, "You're the heroes who saved Sven and Gerta? Please I need your help!"

Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

Brandaelfr has spent the week recovering and praying over his halberd. This has allowed him to recover much of what was lost from his half-demon side when he first grabbed the weapon.

After the woman gives her plea for help, Brandaelfr replies, "What do you need help with?"

Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

Drakul spent the week familiarizing himself with the town in more ways than one. In addition to swapping his blades for some vastly superior ones, he got his armor enchanted, and upgraded his tools. He also observed the people to figure out who the toughest bully was in the village, or at least who was viewed as the big tough guy, bully or not. After figuring out where he stayed for the night, he snuck in and filled the man’s boots with horse feces.

When the woman approached, he was suspicious, but it did sound like there would be adventure to be had.

"Helping is what we do," he said. "What seems to be the trouble?"

Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

"A week ago there were several earthquakes, they damaged the docks and caused landslides up on Kraken's Bluff." she begins, "My son Rory was combing the beaches when he found a new cave that had been uncovered by the quake. He brought back a sword blade and a few gold coins that he had found. He was sure he has found an old smuggler stash."

"He went back with two friends the day you all arrived, but he still hasn't returned! Please, please go look for my son! He's all I have left!" she pleads, "I don't have anything to pay you, but I have no one else to turn to!"

You have time to do the usual research and information gathering before a quest if you like and you can describe whatever you've been up to during the trek up to Krayhold and while you were in town.

Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

Brandaelfr's tails twitches back and forth during the story. It seems a lot more dexterous than just a few days before. He replies, "May we see the sword and coin? They might give a clue as to what could be within the cave. Let me consult with my friends here, and we will let you know what we decide is our best course of action."

He pulls the others aside and says, "There could be any number of reasons why a cave exploration could have gone wrong. For all we know, the cave could be unstable and they just got trapped in a cave-in. We should probably bring a shovel just in case. The other thing I can think of is that there may be some curse attached to the loot the boy found. Anyone have any other ideas, or object to at least looking at the cave?"

"Though her son is probably dead, and she offers no reward, I believe this may be an opportunity to score whatever treasure he was hoping to find. I say we go for it. I’m not sure about how to figure out what we’re up against, though. I did manage to acquire some tools to help with traps, since that is likely the case. It won’t help with curses, unfortunately."

Brandaelfr says, "After a week in a cave, I think that is likely the case as well. We need to go in prepared for anything. Your tools will likely be incredibly useful. I think I can lift a curse if it has an evil origin. It will take me a few hours to make the attempt though."

Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

Dagrak spent his week mainly shopping. He had money to spend and things to buy. First up was armor. He had survived relatively unscathed in the well fight. Compared to some of the others that is, that snake had still left a pretty big mark. He found a suit of mail that was tailored for a dwarf, and had it enchanted. Next he found the local temple of Thor. It really wasn't a temple, more like the Hut of Thor, but there were priests that could pray over and bless his hammer. He had found a smith to do a few modifications to it and his shield. But the priests could fill it with holy energy and add more engravings to it. He could feel Thor's blessing on it as he walked away, after of course leaving a sizable chunk of his earnings as a tithe. It was not wise to be greedy when it came to one's faith.

Dagrak listened to the woman's pleas, his ears perking up at the sound of treasure. "There, there, Lassie, et will all be ok. We will go and find tha treas- your son, Ah mean. Don't you worry."

Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

The town was busier than she expected, the hustle and bustle of people walking to and fro, conducting their day to day business. She wasn’t used to this, she couldn’t stand the noise, it made her miss the peace of her home but she knew she couldn’t turn back now. She was able to get some supplies toward the evenings when the crowds died down and spent the mornings in her room, reminiscing and mapping out their previous adventure. Her map wasn’t spectacular but it was done well and fetched her some coin for her work.
Upon meeting up with her new set of adventuring companions, she hangs toward the back while the woman and Brandaelfr converse. The thought of little pay didn’t dissuade her any as long as she could get away from this town and try out her new bow, she’d be happy.

Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

"We sold the blade to the smith and used up the gold to buy clothes and food. My husband was on the fishing boat that went down last winter and it's been very tough for us." the woman says, "Oh thank you! Any of the children in town should be able to show you where they went, Rory is like a big brother to them, they follow him everywhere. He took two friends with him too, but I just know he's alive."

While they gather up their provisions and prepare to head out the next morning the delvers all ask around town and in the tavern about the area nearby.

Drakul learns about the Morag the Sea Reaver, a famous pirate who was slain by the Imperial Navy a hundred years ago, the legend says her crew buried her with her treasure and that it's never been found!

Brandaelfr learns that the coastal hills around the Kraken's Bluff used to be home to evil cultists who would sacrifice people to their dark god of the sea. It is even said they interbred with sea monsters producing hybrid offspring that still dwell in the depths.

Mog hears a fisherman swear he saw a beautiful mermaid off the coast a few years ago.

Dagrak is about to get some information about the area from someone at the bar when he misreads a social cue and confused the young man for a woman and hit on him. The man slugs him hard in the nose, but the bartender breaks it up before it gets more serious than that.

"A pirate treasure sounds like it could easily be both trapped and cursed. It looks like we may both get to use our craft, Drakul." Brandaelfr says. "As far as undead go, Dagrak, the only thing we will be doing to them is making sure they are permanently at rest. Then we can take any treasure they have left behind after they can no longer act in this world."

He pauses for a second, presumably to envision killing another undead. He continues, "I ran into a group of old sailors in one of the taverns. They did not seem inclined to talk to an outsider, but after I bought them all some beer I could not get them to shut up. They kept going on about how this area used to have a lot of evil cultists that would sacrifice people to some dark god of the sea. They said these cultists even had some relations with sea monsters, resulting in hybrid abominations that may still be around today. We should add freaky humanoid sea monsters to the list of things we might encounter, although I'm not sure I believed them."

Apparently satisfied that the group is here to help the children pocket their copper and jog off along the beach, "Mr. Rory can't die, he's a big adventurer like you guys! This way!"

They lead the adventurers to the cliff face of Kraken's Bluff, there are many smaller caves and crevices, but eventually they show a cave exposed by falls boulders and cracked rocks. "He went in there with Ulfgar and Tomkin!"

Their job done the children laugh and skip off back to town to spend their copper. The cave is deep and quickly descends into darkness, with night vision or torchlight the delvers see scrawled: “The Red-Eyed Dragon rules the waves!”
Accompanying the graffiti is a crude drawing of a horned skull with bat wings. At the end of the cave the passage forks to the right and left.

The crab is extremely agile dodging all of Drakul's strikes and the first two of Mog's. The barbarian's third strike was right on target though and it bit deep into the creature's shell. After that the rest of the delvers were able to kill the creature in short order.

Other than the dead giant crab the only other thing of note is a pile of bones and things in the corner of the room. The cavern narrows to a narrow passage at the other side of the room, if you look down the passage you can see it leads to another fork.

It is clear from the bits of skin, meat, and sinew hanging from parts of the scattered bones these people were eaten recently. Turning the pile with the shovel Brandaelfr can see a lot of bones, it's difficult to tell how many bodies there were. Drakul can tell that the only thing extraordinary about the crab was its size; there is a lot of meat to be harvested.

A successful Search or Scrounging roll can confirm the death count and find any valuables that Brandaelfr might have missed.

Through careful sorting Fergurth confirms that there are two dead humans as well as many fish. Tattered remains of fisherman's clothing like they saw around town are mixed with a tinderbox, the rusty head of a trident, a rubbery tentacle, a broken shortsword, and a pouch with 4 gold pieces. She can see signs that one person fled the crab room but the signs become unclear as to which way they went afterwards.

Re: Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

The adventurers continue forward, taking the right once again. The room they enter has rough hewn stone walls and wooden furniture. There is a work bench covered in tools, with some scattered on the floor as well. There is a bottle broken on the floor with liquid still spreading in a pool, as well Above the bench are wall racks for weapons and shields, though it is clear from the dusty outlines that some have been recently liberated.

Then the delvers see a trio of beings standing across the chamber from them. They are holding the weapons missing from the rack in their multiple arms, no tentacles, in fact they are standing on tentacles too! Each octopus man is holding a shield, two swords and a spear, one has put on a tri-cornered hat while another is wearing a golden necklace. The two groups have only a second to observe each other before each Octopus man throws their spear at the delvers.

Drakul, Fergurth, & Brandaelfr dodge or take 8, 7, & 8 impaling damage respectively.

Critical success on defense; you must ready your weapon before you can use it again.
Defend or become grappled.

Dagrak charges towards the fray.

Brandaelfr parries so well it throws the deep sea delver off, then follows up with a tricky attack.

Successful in their defense the delvers press their attack on the abominations of the deep. The center octopus man parries a strike from Mog before taking a savage slash from Drakul's knife, yet somehow it miraculously dodges the second blow causing it to turn in the thief's hand. It then attempts to shoot a blast of ink at Drakul and grapple him; the ink misses but the tentacles are on target. The left octopus man can't get it's shield up in time and takes an arrow to the brain, as it is falling dead Brandaelfr relieves it of one tentacle.

Brandaelfr couldn't get into reach of the center one by my math, so you couldn't quite end it this round.

Drakul determines the door is safe and unlocks it, the group walks into the room and Dagrak sets a warning spell on the doorway. The cavern they see if furnished with a large table with two benches on either side and a large empty throne like chair. In one corner hangs a cauldron in a fireplace, but there is no fire lit; in the other corner there are a few chests. The walls are adorned with faded flags of all different types, likely trophies taken from captured ships.

At first glance it appears that there are ten people sitting at the table, clad in barbaric silks, breeches, and hats. They are making merry, playing cards, eating, and drinking, but after a few seconds of observation the delvers realize their movements are almost mechanical and they aren't speaking or making any sound. As the light from Brandaelfr's weapon illuminates the room a little better they can see that the plates are empty of food, the cups contain no drink, and the reason they aren't speaking is that they are all skeletons!

The holy warrior's plan works flawlessly. The undead are cowed against the wall and dispatched without incident. The delvers not stand in the empty mess hall, their feet crunching on pieces of the crew they violently laid to rest. The skeletal crew members each had a medium shield and a melee weapon, which are scattered on the ground wherever they fell.

As the delvers get a better look about the room they see the table is solid teak and inlaid with mother of pearl in the image of a three-eyed octopus monster. Scattered across it are candlestick holders covered in melted wax, gold gilded plates, and silver pewter goblets. The throne-like chair is shaped like a seashell on the back and and inlaid with more mother of pearl with it's legs are carved into seahorses. There are two closed chests in one corner and a cooking pot with dust and ash in the other. Finally there are two doors on either end of the room.

Mog quietly just goes about his work of gathering any valuables that are easy to see and piling them in a pile along the wall next to the table. Testing how heavy the table and throne themselves are to see if they too can be dragged out of the cave and trying to guess if they would even fit through the narrow parts of the cave they had already come through.

Re: Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

The chests are opened without incident, inside there are a few blankets, silk shirts, changes of clothing, personal effects, and bags of gold and silver coins. No one finds any edible food and unfortunately the drink has long since been wasted on the empty bones of the skeletons. The skeleton's weapons and shields still seem to be in good working order so Mog piles them by the wall with the plates, goblets, and the items from the chests. The barbarian further determines that the table is beyond his ability to carry by himself as he struggles to lift one end, however he is able to lift the throne with ease. The only other noteworthy thing the delvers find is a carving in the left door that reads,

Re: Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

Inside the chest Drakul finds a woman's nightclothes, a gold and copper drinking goblet, a telescope, a bottle of century old mountain dwarf whiskey, a cracked hand mirror with a silver frame, and a sketched map of the caverns.

The journal is ink-blotted, blood-stained, and partially rotted away, however that last several entries are still legible.  The entries are scrawled in a messy awkward handwriting.

Captain’s Log: Argh, such a day! Took a merchant ship filled with silver and spices, but barely escaped the King’s ships. My quartermaster Bloody Jack counsels we lay low and strike for the coast instead. He says local fishers worship a sea god with foul rites to bless their catch, bowing before an idol with black pearls for eyes. Loot!

Captain’s Log: A villager we questioned gave up the hidden entrance to their temple: a great warren of caves, with not just cultists but fish-folk! We waded into them with bloody slaughter, and seized their priest and sacrificed him before his own idol! Maybe this “Tentacle Beard” will bless us too! Found an underground anchorage, big enough for a long ship! With this hidden fortress, the King’s navy shan’t find us!

Captain’s Log: Argh, such a day! Took another merchant ship, lost nary a crewer. I slew their captain myself. Mayhap Tentacle Beard’s favor is on us after all! Good plunder, a great bejeweled chair shaped like a shell, magic, and a pile of gold I split amongst the men. We diced for the magic items, and Peg-Leg Niles got the best. Bloody Jack grumbled when he didn’t get the glowing sword he wanted. We saved a few captives to bleed for the sea god.

Captain’s Log: Such a day! A man on watch saw a mermaid and dived overboard. Never found him, though Bloody Jack cursed me for wasting two days searching. I said if he didn’t shut his trap, I’ll make Niles my quartermaster instead.

Captain’s Log: Back from another great reaving! Seized a ship full of wine, and the crew is drunk as skunks! Niles and Jack quarreling over loot as usual; I broke it up. Another layover at Tentacle Beard’s temple to fix the sails. Fought off more fish-folk. There’s a nest of them somewhere below.

Captain’s Log: Bloody Jack back from a spying mission at the capital, to earn my favor again. He says he has a plan to steal the King’s treasure ship. We’ll do it!

The last entry is written in a different handwriting:

Quartermaster Niles (Acting Captain): A dark day! We sailed into a trap, the King’s treasure ship packed with knights and bowmen! ’Twas Bloody Jack who betrayed us. Captain Morag fought like a madwoman, so we won the day but she fell mortally with most of our loyal crew slain. The traitorous dog Bloody Jack escaped! Somehow we made it back to the Temple, ship leaking like a sieve. We’ll lay our Pirate Queen to rest. With her dying breath, we swore to find Bloody Jack and slay him, but so few sailors remain, and now they’d rather slink off to spend what shares they can carry. I’m tired and wounded. I’ll bury our Pirate Queen and seal her tomb.

Re: Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

The delvers go through the other door in the mess hall, leaving their treasures to be collected later, and enter the ship's grave. The passage leads to a large cavern; around the edge is a two yard wide stone ledge, the center is a shallow pool no more than a few feet deep in which sits a ship. The ship is a slender open-topped vessel with a single mast, a dozen benches on either side, and a dragon headed prow with glaring red eyes. A gangplank is laid across the ledge to board the rotting ship.

Inside the ship is a pile of glittering blades, shields and coins. Propped up on top of the mound is a body clad in full armor with sword it it's hand, a shield on it's arm, and an axe in it's belt. At the far end of the cave a pile of boulders and driftwood fascine blocks what must have been the entrance that connected the cave with the outside world.

Morag herself was equipped with a fine thrusting broadsword, a medium buckler, a throwing axe, mail armor, sleeves, and legs, as well as crimson dragon hide boots, and pot helm. Her grave goods consist of 8723 copper, 536 silver, and 3 gold in coins. For weaponry there are six shortswords, two broadswords, four axes, a crossbow, four small shields, and eleven crossbow bolts. The less common items in the pile include a silver collar and chain, a finely carved driftwood idol of a merman with tentacles for a beard and a fishy tail, a lute with silver strings, a narwal horn, and a pirate's flag emblazoned with a winged horned skull in crimson.

The ship is too rotted to be of any value, including the dragon figurehead's eyes which are merely painted on. Moreover Rory is not here, though with the recently acquired map will certainly aid in the remainder of the search.

The other fishman fares much, for a moment, it avoids both of Mog's swings and Dagrak's lightning bolt. It even avoids one of the arrows that Fergurth fires at it, but the other arrow pierces it's eye and scrambles it's brain.

Enemies dispatched the delvers turn their attention to the net and it's occupant. She stops thrashing about and it is clear she is actually a mermaid, she cries, "Please don't hurt me!"

He does pause to look at his wound before trying to help though. He says, "Just give me a minute to put a bandage on this wound. It is not bad enough that I want Dagrak to burn through a spell yet today, but I would prefer not to bleed all over."

He grabs the medical kit out of his bag and asks, "Can anyone help just wrap this really fast? It is difficult to reach when I am wearing my armor."

I think a First Aid roll from someone would probably work to just shove some bandages inside the armor for now. I'm not entirely sure.

Fergurth scouts ahead and the group makes it to the pool without incident. Lizret is extremely grateful for her rescue, healing, and return to the sea. She says, "As a token of my thanks please take this ring! It is enchanted and quite valuable. Anyone who attacks the wearer with metal weapons gets hurt too, but it kinda destroys anything metal you carry."

"The temple of Tentacle Beard was just ahead the way they were dragging me. If you decide to attack it, beware the storm demon that serves as it's guardian. I wish I could help more, but all I know." Lizret says, "Thank you again heroes! I hope we can meet again some day!"

And with that she dives into the water and swims out to sea.

Steelbane Ring:
If the wearer takes any injury from an iron or steel weapon, the wielder of that weapon suffers the same injury! However, any non-magical iron or steel weapon carried by the wielder degrades in quality by one step (e.g., from fine to good) every hour. Good weapons become cheap (+2 to breakage chances); cheap weapons rust away into dust! The ring is worth $10,500 ($500 without the enchantment).

Drakul closes in and slashes the throat of the fishman facing him. While the others charge to close the distance Fergurth shoots two arrows through the back of the last fishman's neck, killing it. Through the partially open door Drakul can see the Temple of Tentacle Beard.

There is a pool in the middle of the room and lashed to a beam suspended by a system of ropes and pullies is a badly beaten human male. Behind the pool is a 10’ tall statue of a naked man with a cruel expression and glittering black eyes. His beard is sculpted to resemble writhing tentacles, his hair is like seaweed, and he has webbed fingers and toes.

Posted around the pool were four more Fishmen who have turned toward the entryway with spears ready. Standing near the pool is a fifth fishman, his scales are colored differently and he is wearing a fancy cloak while wielding a staff. The cloaked one shouts on their disturbing slurpy language and points his followers on while charging his staff with lightning.

The room is High Sanctity for Evil and Low Sanctity for Good.

Brandaelfr swings twice at the chieftain.

The chief fights like a mad man fish. First he ducks under both of Fergurth's arrows which strike chips out of the statue. Then he parries the first of Mog's strikes, though the second strike cuts deep across the fishman's body and he falls down. Then Drakul slashes the chieftain as it struggles to get out of the way. Finally making it to the fight is Dagrak who caves in the chieftain's chest with a splatter of blood. Brandaelfr then decapitates the fishman for good measure.

The delvers don't even have time to catch their breath. Their is a crack of Lightning and a boom of Thunder as the Temple Guardian appears. It is a demonic jellyfish with most of it's tentacles made of electricity. It lashes out at each of the delvers with a lightning tentacle from it's position floating near the statue.

Re: Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

The heroes are force to be reckoned with, Tentacle Beard's guardian never stood a chance thanks to the mermaid's warning. Each delver unleashes their full fury on the electric jellyfish, in one second it is oozing electricity and ichor. Still it attempts to attack Dagrak.

Full of holy anger Dagrak catches the unholy servitor by it's feeder tentacle and pulls it down toward the ground so that he can finish it off with a mighty blow from his hammer. With a boom of thunder and explosion of lightning the evil being dies and it's body splats to the floor to deliquesce.

The evil of the dark god Tentacle Beard still hangs over the room, though it is clear of any further hostiles. There is an obvious pulley system off to the side of the chamber that the delvers can use to lower the as yet unidentified young man.

Alchemy yields 1 Paut potion per margin of success on the Demon Jelly's remains.

Exorcism is needed to cleanse the room.

Helping Fergurth lower the victim back to solid ground, Brandaelfr says, "Is your name Rory? We are here to save you. My friend Dagrak here can heal you if you are wounded."

Once Dagrak sees to the young man, Brandaelfr says, "I am going to try and purge the remaining evil from this room. Please do not disturb me for the next few hours."

Brandaelfr walks over to the idol and sits in front of it, brandishing his halberd.

"Yes that's me, I'm Rory." the young man says, grimacing in pain from the beatings and torture. He's still very much in shock from everything that has happened to him over the last few days, but does mumble something about being very grateful for the rescue as Dagrak escorts him out of the room to heal his wounds.

Brandaelfr brandishes his weapon, a holy relic of his god, and begins the cleansing ritual of the unholy shrine. He recites prayers and mantras of The Allfather and slowly the holy light from Gungnir shines brighter than ever bathing the room with the power of good. Eventually the entire room is lit up like the midday sun, there is literally and spiritually no place for darkness in the room. After the exorcism is completed the light fades to normal and the sanctity of the room is restored.

Sending up a thankful prayer to the Allfather, Brandaelfr walks out of the room with a brightened spirit. He says, "That exorcism just proved this is indeed Gungnir, a weapon sent by the Allfather himself! Did you all see how the light from my halberd burned away the evil?"

He goes over to Rory and says, "I think it is time we got you home, Rory. Your mother asked us to find you, and I expect you have had enough of this cave for a long while."

I'm using the ritual exorcism as justification for Gungnir to now be a Named Possession, which means it will start gaining character points as well!

Re: Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

Drakul assisted Dagrak in letting down Rory, and helping him out of the room to be healed.

"May this be a lesson to you, boy: Next time you decide to go on an adventure, make sure you’re competent enough to not get yourself killed. I’m sure it seemed like loads of fun when you discovered the cave, but this world is an unforgiving one. Buried treasure always means evil somethings guarding said treasure. Loki’s own Luck alone you did not suffer the same fate as your even less competent friends."

He was not nice about it. This boy needed a stern hand, else he venture off to get himself killed on some fool’s errand or quest for adventure. If anything, the little kids back in town needed a living role model who was going to teach them caution, not suicide.

Back in town, Drakul spent his downtime cutting purses and picking pockets, especially of anyone who appeared to have become wealthy by abusing the poor. He managed to find at least a couple wealthy marks and snagged quite a good chunk of change from their overfull coffers.

There was one fellow in town that had been bothering Drakul. He was a self-proclaimed “sheriff” of sorts, which of course Drakul found totally useless. But what was unique about this “officer” was his propensity to squash the small business owners in the town by over-enforcing unnecessary laws to suppress their profits. He did this because some of the more wealthy merchants had lined his pockets to ignore their business dealings and drive out all others. Drakul wouldn’t stand for such a thing. So, from some of the cash he stole from the more wealthy merchants, he took a decent wad of cash and hid it in this “sheriff’s” belongings. Now it would look like he was skimming profits for extra cash. Whatever the merchants would do to him would be fun enough to watch transpire.

Scoring Extra Cash:
Pickpocket: Success by 0, Crit (by 10), 7, 2, Crit (by 10), 7, and 6.
Score: $0, $500, $35, $10, $500, $35, and $30; a total of $1,110.

The Trick
Stashing a pittence (1/10 from each) of the already stolen goods on this sheriff’s person. Wasn’t sure which was more appropriate:
Pickpocket: Success by 4.
Sleight of Hand: Success by 2.

Rory's mother is eternally grateful, she thanks the adventurers through tears of joy, "Thank you so much for saving my Rory! If you ever need to go to sea, Rory can take you out on our fishing boat! I'm sorry we can't do anything else for you... But thank you so so much!"

Rory nods sullenly, nearly losing his life and costing his friends their lives has sobered him up from any notion of adventuring, "Yes sir... Fishing was good enough for my da' and it's good enough for me..."

Drakul sees a few of the merchants gang up on the town bully, knocking him around a bit, much as he had with the smaller stall owners. They wouldn't call him a thief, as that would escalate things beyond fisticuffs and bloodshed could start a clan war, but it's clear that his days of being paid to harass the smaller businesses are over.

Brandaelfr is able to hire an appraiser and escort him through the caves to show all the treasure they had recovered. All of the guild merchants are extremely interested in everything the caves had to offer, indeed most purchased and collected the treasure right from the cave. This extra haul of treasure beyond what was raised will be a great addition for the spring market for all of the merchants and there is a lot of chatter about the ragtag group of delvers who have cleared two dungeons in as many weeks.

Re: Chapter 2: The Grave of the Pirate Queen.

After a week of resting, training, and upgrading their equipment the heroes are ready to set out upriver toward Isfjall. They are again contracted by Sven and Gerta whose clan has a few less warriors than the others, to help provide protection on the trip in exchange for a ride on their barge, "It'll take us five to seven days to make it up the river to Isfjall lads. We Snjófugl (Snow Birds) aren't always on the best terms with the Ána Rottur (River Rats), but they usually don't attack a barge during this season because the ships are much better protected while we're making the trip up after winter. With you five along it should keep things uneventful."

A few days up the river, their uneventful trip called for an unexpected stop as a huge tree has fallen across the river from bank. Sven directs the adventurers and the crew in getting the barge secured, ”A'right lads, you’re going to need to go ashore and clear this tree, so we can get everything moving again.

Just as the adventurers are getting into their work of chopping at the tree there is a terrible racket as a horde of short reptilians armed with hatchets and clubs come out of their hiding spots in the brush. They roar/screech their battle cries and charge.

Defend 3 times or take 5, 6, & 8 cutting damage and become grappled for every failure.

Fergurth shoots two arrows, the first Dinoman ducks but the other goes boneless with an arrow in his eye. Drakul and Brandaelfr strategically position themselves to deal with the horde, while Dagrak readies his weapon. Mog is in the thick of the fighting already, avoiding several attacks but getting cut; he retaliates killing the offending enemy. Frenzied by the blood of their dead comrades most of the Dinomen lunge forward with their sharp jaws trying to take down their targets. As they do, two significantly larger and better armed Dinomen bring up the rear.

Defense: Feverish Parry at -2, Feverish Retreat Dodge, Feverish Parry
Success on all 3. Critical hit on parry hit for dino at 2.4; it takes 17(3) cut to the face. The dino at 4.5 takes 12(3) cut to the face on the parry hit.

Despite the ferocity of the Dinomen's attacks the heroes are able to hold the line, cutting down dinos right and left as they lunge at them. Fergurth shoots and kills two more dinos while Brandaelfr and Drakul cut a few more down. Mog flexes his muscles and breaks free of the Dinoman's jaws while Dagrak holds his own against a pair of dinos. The Dinomen continue to press their attack against the adventurers, most switching back to their weapons after watching their kinsmen get slaughtered. The delvers quickly wrap up the remaining Dinomen. Fergurth puts an arrow into one, but her other target dodges. Mog coming up from behind slaughters the dinos attacking Brandaelfr. Meanwhile Drakul takes two swipes at his foe who ducks under the first slash and comes right up into the return strike having his head almost completely severed. The last Dino is surrounded by the adventurers his tribe sought to devour, it's beady eyes dart side to side as it weighs it's options, but it's thinking is quickly interrupted by the arrow Fergurth puts into it's eye.

The clearing is littered with dead Dinomen and the tree is still blocking the river, but the delvers can now be relatively sure they will be safe to continue the work of clearing it.

The battle, though brief, was difficult; only through sticking together and watching their comrades backs did the heroes keep from being overwhelmed. They clear the tree without incident and gather up the crude weapons of the Dinomen as a small prize. Upon their return Sven is surprised to see them splattered with blood and bits of gore, "What happened to you lot?"

After the story is relayed to him he shakes his head, "By the gods! We would all be dead if not for you! I can't thank you enough!"

The rest of the trip upriver proves uneventful and the barge stops over in Wodenheim for a day to trade a few things before making the trip across Lake Odin to Isfjall.

You can go ahead and spend the points and add the money from the Dino encounter. I'll be closing off this chapter and starting a new one for your arrival in Isfjall soon(ish) I hope.
