The Ballad Of Adam Black
Waterdeep...the jewel of a trade city on the water. It's finely cobbled streets and bustling merchant areas are welcoming to caravans and ships alike. The streets bustle with activity almost constantly with creatures of all races, dressed in their fineries and travelling garb.

But this isn't a story of those people, this is the beginning of the story of a young orphan named Adam Black and how he came to be an adventurer.

We see a young, black haired boy skulcking just within a darkened alley, his eyes watching as the patrons wander by. But they are not his quarry this day, oh no, it is one of the freshly baked loaves of bread at the bread merchants stand. The sweet smell of warm cooked dough makes a grumble sound from the young man's stomach.

The Ballad Of Adam Black
In reply to Jads (msg # 1): As my stomach grumbles with the thought of food, I scan the area and look to see if any of the rift raft kids are around. A plan develops. One I need to be close to the vender stand. Two need a distraction to happen in the oppiste direction of my escape. Three I need my escape route to hide me and turn off this avenue quickly. Last a meeting spot to split up the takings.

The thought of food is overriding my anticipation of the big boats in the harbor, what it must be like to sail the high seas.

The Ballad Of Adam Black
Adam's eyes darted here and there scanning the crowd for the others that had agreed to the plan to get fed. Off to the left of the bread merchant was the largest boy in the "Crew", Zeke, whose fists were as scarred as any adult brawler, using them instead of his brains more often than not. The young bruiser was holding a small bundle of flowers and handing them out to draw attention. On the right were the twins, Rif and Rabbit, two of the most malicious of the Crews members. The two youths were both skinny, gaunt looking murderous ruffians but seemed to be decent back up.

Seeing the others were in position Adam began his plan.

The Ballad Of Adam Black
With a quick scan of the area, not seeing any roaming city guards and checking to see if my escape will not be blocked by any big groups of people I begin. A quick eye and hand gesture to Rif and Rabbitvand I begin walking forward to the bread stand. Rabbit on cue will go and stand near the bread merchant and ready a quick generic question to be asked.  Rif will continue walking past the merchant and his brother Rif. Rif will start a mock fight with Zeke over so called "money and change".

Once I see the see the "fight" start between Zeke and Rif, and then the secondary distracting "question" readied by Rabbit I will make my move. Two large loaves of bread should be enough, three might be over kill. With a last final scan of my escape route and then the grab and go with the sound of the fight.

If all goes well the meet should be on the roof as usual a few twists and turns later. The thought of half a loaf of warm fresh bread puts a smile on my face.

The Ballad Of Adam Black
The plan was executed perfectly, the thfee boys no strangers to a grift played their parts to a tee. Once satisfied that the bread merchant and anyone else that might notice you were occupied you move from the alley and quickly make your way to the cart. You move up next to Rabbit, your head turned as if you were watching the argument as your hand reached up and snatched the first loaf easily. Once that was secured you reached for the second. Just as your fingers touched the second loaf a strong hand clamped down on your wrist.
"Oi! What's this then? Pilfering honest merchants ya little poof? " a large man with crooked yellow teeth and a shiny bald head said as he pulled you in closer.
"Gerard, this little thief is steeling from ye. Call the guards and let the Lord's of Waterdeep deal wit im. "

You try and wriggle free but this one has an iron grip, no doubt thanks to years of hard manual labor on a ship or at the docks. Seeing you being caught your three accomplises immediately stopped what they were doing and scattered leaving you behind.

Well, this was it. You would at the very least be thrown into a dungeon or lose a hand for thievery. And then the grip loosened as the man issued a grunt, his other hand reaching to his forehead as blood trickled down from a wound. You look up in time to see another stone hit the man and he staggered back releasing you all together. Looking across the way and up you see the source of the attack, a slight hooded figure on the roof across the way, their arms outstretched with a slingshot loaded and pointed in your direction. It was Melody, the short red hair girl whom you called friend and who always had your back. With a nod of her hooded head she covered you as you snatched the second loaf and bolted, disappearing into the crowd in the chaos and heading back to the meeting point at the docks.
