I have a quick question for Bran and Shandril - Oberon being a Rhydan can be Rhy-bonded  with another pc do either of you want to bond with a large grizzly bear?

All right, it looks like we're mostly ready to begin. Shandril, I'll get you the stats on your bonded companion later today or tomorrow.
I probably will get to making the opening post either tomorrow or Saturday.

You guys are official agents of the Aldin government and are paid handsomely for your work. If there's any gear you need short of an artifact (which are extremely rare in this setting), you've got it. If you think you'll need support staff like squires or pages or a healer to accompany your group, you can have those, as well.
Just let me know.

Artifacts are rare but what about other quality magic items?

Just for clarification's sake, I'm pretty sure there's nothing that says you can't be both Rhy-bonded and life-bonded. The two are different things, and they aren't mutually exclusive.

I was planning to have a combat to let you get a feel for your characters and then handle the mission details in a flashback, which is admittedly less cool if I have to explain it, but... communication, right? So. Within the boundaries of you all being in the same troupe that's travelling together to the hamlet of Draur's Farm, sure. You can come at the situation from whichever angle feels appropriate for your preferred mode of travel.

Bran's player seems to be making steady progress. I was hoping he'd be ready to play after this weekend. If he's not, we'll just forge ahead and he can join in when he does get ready for it.

My basics are done up to going into Focuses, talents and specializations.

Wulf is a 23 year old female of the Forest-Folk in Pavin Weald.

She is the middle daughter of a Shaman father who married a low-noble from out of the forest who ran off to find her fate. She was bored with middle-sibling life so practiced her arts and skills. Trained with a Quarterstave and Rapier she also shows signs of the Arcane, which was always borne out from her red hair and pale golden eyes.

Her family has always protected the local Rhydan-Bear family, who in turn protects them. She has a special bond with Oberon and they can hear and speak to each other with a thought.

Exactly. Accuracy is for all ranged attacks, so we can use your roll.
A spear does 1d6+3, so we'll just add 2 to the damage roll you made.

I'm preparing to go into hospital now. Two hours until I leave for admission then surgery at 2pm so I'll post when I can over the next few days. Hey guys, I'm so excited to have found a Blue Rose game to jump into! I see we've already got each of the three major character types covered (and a griffon mount? Wow!), So that opens things up a fair amount. Is there anything we're feeling is  missing from the group? I know it's early on, but if there's a big, obvious hole, I'd be happy to step in and help out. I'm also seeing a whole Pavin Weald theme here, you guys want another from the region to keep that going, or would an outsider to mix things up be more interesting?

Basically, I'm walking into this with options wide open and no particular plans, so let me know if you have any ideas. :)

Well one thing I've noticed just in this combat is none of us seems to have ranged weapons and Oberon is getting hit by arrows a lot. Up to you but a warrior or expert that specialises in some sort of range attack might be good

And that's an interesting idea. A mounted archer concept could be really cool. There's the whole not-Mongolia out West to draw from, too. I'll totally look into making a Rezean badass.

I'm out of hospital and resting in somewhat more comfort but will still be sporadic for awhile until I can increase my strength and activity level. Thank you all for the well wishes.

Yeah waiting for someone to hit the Mage in the tree as Oberon doesn't have a range attack.....unless he just goes up and rips the tree out of the ground :)

As soon as I can figure out how to make the dice work for me I have something nasty planned. :D

The dice roller should be set up for 3d6 + any bonus for skills once you've rolled copy the line from above the dice roller it will have something like 14 {{4} 5,5} the first number is the dragon dice the other two are the ones you look at for doubles in this case you have double 5 which means you get to spend 4 (the dragon dice score) stunt points on stunts to add to your action :)

In honor of the season of renewal and rebirth, I'll let you change any character options you've selected previously, even background or class.
In addition, you can swap one point in any two abilities you like, so you can drop your Communication to -1 in order to raise your Accuracy to +4, for example.

You still haven't chosen your second nor third arcana. If you pick Animism or Shaping for one of them, you could have Plant Shaping, which would let you part the trees like the waters of the Dead Sea.

Make a Perception or Intelligence check at let's say TN 11 this time to use Plant Shaping. This power causes Fatigue, so then you get to roll Self-Control (Willpower), also against TN 11 (a coincidence) to avoid taking a level of Fatigue.

You can get there in three rounds if you sprint like the wind. (Companions can seriously haul ass. Especially companion donkeys.)
Muqali will be Winded (-1 to all tests, cannot Run nor Charge) for the whole encounter, though.

Velynn take a look at your to hit rolls the ones that actually hit some of them have doubles so you can use stunt points too do extra things

Yeah, I did. If the sword hits, It will have Mighty Blow added. If the horse kick hits, it will have Mighty Blow and Lightning Attack. If the second horse kick hits, it can't use a stunt because Lightning Attack doesn't let you get more stunt points, that would make it too awesome.

Um, no. Your narrative takes precedence over what's written in the dice roller, so if you make a mistake just change the text. If it changes the bonus you apply (a weapon that uses Fighting instead of Accuracy, say) just make a note of that, too. It's not a big deal.

And you already accounted for the extra dice from Mighty Blow in your damage roll, right?

I thought that was a little odd, myself.
If you want, you can trade Accuracy for Fighting as one of your primary stats. The only real difference is whether you increase them at odds or evens, and I would definitely consider archers to be warriors...

It's fine. I'll just take a bump to fighting and focus in Intimidation to make her scary, then a focus in Str (climb) for the warrior deal, and grab the archery stuff at level 3. Velynn does both close and ranged, so it's not that big of a deal. Just a minor annoyance.

Side note: I'm pretty sure I'm safe, but the Specializations list is pretty short and constrained. What happens if a character isn't actually eligible for any of them at level 4? Like, it's super-easy to steer towards what you want from the start, but if you just said "Oh, I don't have to worry about that until 4" and then don't actually worry about it until 4, I can see several ways to end up completely blocked out from all of them.

The book says you can take a regular talent instead of a specialization, but that you don't get your next chance at a specialization until Level 6. Personally, I don't see why you couldn't take your specialization at Level 5 instead of the Level 5 talent, if you missed it at Level 4 for whatever reason.

Well try being a warrior bear warriors get lots of weapon proficiencies but as my bear can't carry weapons certain talents and skill focus aren't available to him :(

Yeah, I was thinking about that, too. A lot of the Specializations seem like they were written by someone that forgot a PC might be an intelligent talking animal.

Well I think most of them came from dragon age and fantasy age where animals tend to be eaten not talked to lol

Well, if any of you would like to add a talent or specialization that doesn't exist in the book, I'm open to ideas. This system is really easy to adapt.

Shandril is the best wingwoman. Even though Velynn wouldn't admit that she needs one because she wouldn't admit there's any chance of anything happening anyway.

I've only ever had a pdf copy of the rules and i hate reading pdfs

Today I was between meetings and had some time to kill and it was nice out so I walked to my next meeting.

On the way I passed a bargain book shop and there in the window was a copy of blue rose.

I went in and grabbed it. The shop owner laughed when I got to the counter. His wife had ordered it for herself through the shop because she though it was a romantic fantasy novel not so kind of game book so he put it in the window to try and sell it.

Bargain of the year so far only cost me £19.99 yes!!!!

Nice. I've been meaning to get a physical copy sooner or later. But since this is the first time I've managed to get in an actual game of Blue Rose, it felt a little excessive.

That is nice! I enjoy physical copies of books, but I use almost exclusively PDFs nowadays. They're so much easier to carry around and I do so much of my writing on the go that it just doesn't make sense to use physical copies of books.
Now if only they could make it so the PDFs smelled like the physical books. lol :)

I agree, Oberon. I have a Kindle as it's easier for me to take on the road when I have to go to other hospitals but nothing beats a real book.

By the way the rule book is beautiful but bloody heavy to hold for a long time it's a thick beast :)

Hey, sorry about the extended absence there. Things got delayed (again), and we were scrambling hard, and then we got here and basically nobody felt like doing anything, and then there's been some hassle over getting internet and... well, a ton of stuff.

Has this game died? It feels kind of dead, which is a shame, because I was enjoying it. We've clearly lost all momentum here the last few months, though.

Still here just been hit by RL my wife's gran has been given weeks to live as she has terminal cancer she's 97 so had a good innings

Then to top it off one of my daughters best friends got hit by a lorry cycling home from school he's in intensive care with a broken leg, pelvis, arm and shoulder down his left side

So having to support two emotional girls at the moment.

I've been busy, but I'm still here. I think I was waiting to find out what Velynn and maybe Shandril were planning to do. However, Oberon is currently waiting on a scene transition.
I just wasn't sure if you guys were still busy, and since it's the summer everything on RPoL has kind of slowed down anyway. (Which is just as well, because RL has decidedly not slowed down.)

I am very sorry for the disappearance. I'm really enjoying this game, but I can't promise I'll be able to keep up in the near future. I don't know if things are going to be back to normal soon or not. Fortunately, this is a slowly-paced game, so it shouldn't be nearly as disruptive as it is to the others I'm in. If a tall possible, I'd prefer not to be dropped because I'm really into the story here and I want to know how it plays out.

Yeah, sorry. I'm having to drop a number of games. Luckily, the pace of this one isn't so fast, so if I miss a little, it's a lot less of an issue. Because honestly, this is the one I care about the most anyway.

Also, we're going to level up and Lord Draur is going to reward you guys with one piece of special equipment each when you return: a masterwork or minor magical item. Hi all hope you are all safe and well

My office is setting up remote working this week so I'll be home for the next month or so as we all self isolate

I'm here. I got sick recently, but I'm more or less good now. Not CV. I am in the Seattle area, so we're getting extra hard shutting down, though.

Day one of remote working love the peace and quiet officially told by my office we will be working remotely for 12 weeks minimum.

So, explanation. I got into a professional 3-month Boot Camp program kind of at the last minute at the beginning of March that basically took 80 hours a week--lol. After that, I spent a month and a half publishing a couple of short stories and a novella and an RPG book.
Long and short? I've been so busy I haven't even had time to log in until my email reminded me about the site this week.
So... Hope all you guys are doing well and winning at life!

I'm still very busy right now, so I don't have a lot of time for RPOL. I also don't know how many of you guys remain invested in this game after six-odd months. I guess I'm polling for player interest.
What do you guys think? I can turn over ownership of the game, if anyone else has more time. I may be able to keep running it on a slow schedule, (once a week or so?) depending on how my other games go. I won't know until I get replies.

So. Missed you guys? Hope COVID didn't get you? Blessings and good health and all that jazz?

Still here and still safe. Been lockdown at conscience beginning of March working from home no sign of going back to the office yet either.

Holiday soon I'll be nice to get away from the house my world has shrunk to the house and three streets to the left and three to the right when I take the dog for his walk.

Last holiday was Christmas 8 months without a break is killing me.

Looking forward to long coastal dog walks and no work.

ROFL yeah, I hear you. I have a 2nd grader at home so there's been a constant drone of YouTube videos going on in the background of my life for what feels like ever. I actually drove down to Austin the other week and was pleased to discover that I hadn't forgotten how to drive. lol

Still here and still interested. I'm on lock down really hard and have more or less all my time sitting in front of a computer these days. I'm down for playing slow if that's what people want, or I could theoretically step in and take over if people were willing to put up with me learning how to run an RPoL game.

My daughter should be getting her exam results next week but the exams were cancelled so.they will be giving the a calculated trade instead hopefully she will get what she was forecast to get.

One good thing is the college she applied to have accepted her whatever her grade so she'll be doing a three years course to study animal husbandry so she can qualify a a vet nurse

Given I have a Masters in Microbiology and did a fellowship in Field Epidemiology I'm our hospital's point when it comes to reporting to the NHS board for the Lothian Area. I also write our policies, organise contact tracing, blather, blather, etc.

I had COVID in March and it was not fun. At all. Not even a little.

Did anybody make the UK Games Expo virtual expo this past weekend? I got to run a couple games for groups of brilliant players (Tales from the Loop and Numenera. So much fun!!!) and then got to play in a few games, as well. It was a blast! I'm digging all the virtual gaming expos that are going down this year, despite the grim circumstances.

As long as you all don't mind a slow game, I can shoot for once-a-week posting. I tend to be very lassez-faire on story progression, too, so if you need to get in a few rounds between my inputs, you're certainly welcome to come up with NPC responses as needed to fit your narratives. By now, you guys are at least as good as I am at resolving rolls in this system. And I think we're familiar enough with each other to trust everybody with the NPCs. lol
Otherwise, I can swap the reins over to Velynn if you want something a little faster. Either way is fine by me.
But Velynn, if you have the time you should definitely try out running a game or two on here. Finding players is seldom an issue unless you're running a REALLY off-brand system, and it's very rewarding if you can keep up with it. Even the advanced settings like language groups are pretty easy to learn. If you have any questions, feel free to hit me up. :)

Yeah, that sounds like the world we're in right now...
It's a mess.

Legacy is a deeply terrible game. The setting is pretty much just Highlander but also with vampires. The system is a Storytelling System knockoff with a lot of holes in it. Two people of the same Str cannot hurt each other in unarmed combat. If one of them has Str one point higher (on a scale that goes to 5), the weaker one cannot hurt the stronger one with a baseball bat. The art almost entirely consists of photographs of the devs and their friends with a cheap Photoshop filter over them.

All that said, we had an absolute blast playing a one-shot with it once. Mostly making fun of the brokeness.

**facepalms** A very old friend of mine had (they are no longer friends. Big mess, long story) a group of friends who were the creators of that game. He was present for some of the creation process and still jokes about it to this day. The vampires were put it at the last moment to capitalise on the WoD craze and were very much a square peg/round hole thing. He's no longer friends with the Blackmoors but he says they still love the game and think it's the greatest thing ever. I was asked to be the artist for the game but for free because I'D GET MY NAME IN A BIG RPG RELEASE! Well my name was already out there and when I saw the game and got an idea of what I would be doing I turned them down flat so it's mainly pics of the "creative team" run though crude photoshopping with some wretched art done by Susan Blackmoor, if I recall correctly.

They wanted to make an actual Highlander RPG but the rights were too much for them to acquire the IP. I've always wondered how many copies that thing sold.

I'm open to going either way. Since you guys have finished this episode, it's a natural place to leave it, if we want, and that's okay. We can tie things up with brief epilogues continuing each character's chronicles and then leave it at that. On the other hand, there are always more adventures to be had, and if you guys want to continue with these characters, I have plenty more story upon which we can draw. Or you can choose to go off and pursue something unrelated--it's a big world.
Alternately, if somebody else has an idea and wants to try GMing this game (or another, I'll say just for the sake of saying it), I'm not against that, either. I'll play or GM pretty much anything with you guys anytime. :)

Come along and learn, then, if you like! PbtA is very simple, and you'll have no trouble picking it up. The dice mechanics in Hi, Fantasy! are a tiny bit different because you roll d12+d8 instead of the more traditional 2d6, which means that you're rolling for 12+ for a partial success and 16+ for a complete success. More commonly, PbtA games roll 2d6 for 7+ or 10+.
