SEARCH FOR THE ARTIFACT

In reply to Arashi Fukushu (msg # 32):

Horu looks terrified and stutters somewhat in his response
"ahm, well ah, my chicken is gone, see, and his son is a trouble-maker. I have seen him around my farm a lot lately and, um, I don't no anybody else that would do such a thing."

SEARCH FOR THE ARTIFACT

In reply to Arashi Fukushu (msg # 34):

Baki hurriedly scampers away to get his son while Horu searches for words to utter, realizing at this point that lives can hang in the balance. His, Baki's, Baki's son.

There is no doubt of the fear Horu has at this point. He must now make try to walk a tightrope. If his words lean too much one way it may get himself killed but if they lean too much the other way they could get Baki or his son killed.

Not good at judging the character of this new samurai doesn't help matters. They could all be dead in a matter of moments...

Bowing profusely : "Arashi-sama. I mean to say that Baki's son is perhaps a bit more on the rebellious side than the average teenager. I was, indeed, trying to pressure Baki and his son into confessing to the crime or to see if they could convince me that they did not do this deed. I have no proof on which to show."

Horu cringes when he utters the last sentence, knowing he should have stop talking a bit earlier.

SEARCH FOR THE ARTIFACT

In reply to GM KEN (msg # 35):

Totsu casually positions himself in his body gaurd position by Arashi and keeps an eye on the surroundings to watch his back and asses the reactions of the people observing him and interacting with him for any potential threats.  This would be Totsu's standard position and actions when Arashi is interacting with people.  Just so those watching could see that Arashi has support.
In this situation Totsu is not really expecting any trouble but is going through the motions any way for the show.

Meanwhile Totsu is thinking, Good job Arashi, I'll just stay back here and enjoy the show.  :)

SEARCH FOR THE ARTIFACT

In reply to Ito (msg # 39):

Ito is coming back into town for lunch when he sees the hetman, Goshu, with another villager. They are on their knees as a Samurai questions them. A bushi (Totsu) stands behind and to the right of the samurai in a protective position, a female of some standing based on her clothing (Sasumi) stands next to Totsu, a couple peasants (Ayare and Hiro) stand behind them and a rather sloppily dressed man (Takeshi) that does not look to be a peasant but you are not sure of his status stands to the samurai's left and behind. With your keen powers of observation you think you noticed them first and have a chance to turn away unnoticed if you desired. Then you see the sloppily dressed man discreetly motioning you over. He must have the eyes of an eagle.

Soon the rest of the group notices Ito coming towards the scene from the direction of the shrine. Ito is the Shinto Gakusho (Priest) that has recently entered the town and spends much of his time at the shrine.

Ito, You soon recognize the mon (heraldic symbol) that the samurai dons, it is that of the Michizane clan.

SEARCH FOR THE ARTIFACT

Since I rolled a good perception, I took some liberties.

Oh no.  What is a Michizane doing out in the middle of nowhere?  Taxes?  Seems too many to have brought for collecting.  Conscripting?  Not here, that's for certain.  And if is not money or bodies, what else could a samurai want?  Perhaps the shrine?  It is the only thing unique about this place.

When Mr. Sloppy motioned to him, Ito was surprised.  He did a more in-depth evaluation:

Mr. Sloppy, by catching him first, likely meant intelligent.  His eyes scanned constantly, even if he did not give off an aura of nervousness.  Dressed in peasant garb, it was possible he was First Servant to the samurai.  He looked a little undersized for fighting, despite the tanto at his side, so likely the chamberlain.

The large samurai (there were three), seemed to be the one in charge.  He was absolutely huge.  He stood ramrod straight and addressed Goshu with that typical samurai cavalier attitude.  His armor was not as robust as the second samurai, but it was clear he was the focus of the group by how they stood around him.  The standard dai-kyu and dai-sho were expected, but Ito's little eyes also noticed that his gloves had metal plates at the knuckles.  He was wearing Shuko!  This was, clearly, a representative of the Michizane.  Luckily, the clan had always been sympathetic to those who followed the million gods.

The smaller male samurai, with the turtle-like armor, was a puzzle.  His hair was cut samurai style, and his armor was samurai style, but his dai-sho bore no wear at the hilts - not even the appearance of sweat on the cloth around the grips.  If he drew that weapon more than a dozen times, Ito would have been surprised.  And yet, clearly, he was a sentry of some sort.  He stood confident and cocky.  Wait.  Was that a yawara under his belt peeking out?  A samurai with a stick?  And, Spirits of the Land, as that a chain circling his waist?  Fascinating!  The samurai looked budoka trained.  And from the look of those hamfists, calluses, and bruises, those fists saw far more action than those swords. Clearly, though, a subordinate.

The woman samurai, plain of face but elegant in carriage, was almost impossible to make out.  Her face was a mask as she looked over the proceedings.  Despite being behind the big samurai, she did not look like she deferred to him.  She looked as though she was appraising the situation with only vague interest.  Dressed far better than any of the others, with the Michizane mon stitched directly into her kimono, it was possible she was actually the one in charge despite not saying anything.

The male servant looked innocuous enough.  Hale, young, and carrying a decent sized load on his back.  Poor man.  He might be the only real servant in the group.  They'll wear him out within the year if he has to dote on 3 or 4 of his betters constantly.  No armor.  No weapons.  And a slightly stupid look on his face.  He was probably raised within the Michizane household like his parents before him.

Lastly was the woman servant.  Clearly, she would be the lady-maid to the female samurai.  No weapons, no armor, and where the man servant looked vapid, she looked piercingly intelligent.  Her eyes scanned the area often, despite not seeing Ito.  Something about her bothered Ito, but he couldn't put his finger on it.  Perhaps it was the independent way she stood.  If he had to guess, she had not been a servant for very long.

Ito approached slowly but openly.  It was unusual for a servant to demand his attendance, but Ito was not fool enough to think that it was Mr. Sloppy to whom he should address himself.  Ito moved to just outside what would be considered 'private conversation' range as the headman and samurai talked about whatever it was they were talking about, bowed, and waited patiently to see what interest Mr. Sloppy had in him.

GOSHU acknowledges Ito upon arrival with a short nod of his head from his position on the ground as both he and Horu have not been motioned to stand yet.
Not wanting to upset this Arashi any more he decides to keep his response as short as possible without showing any disrespect : "Yes Lord."

Baku and the boy enter the scene. Both taking up positions next to the others that on on their knees.

BAKU : "This is my son, Itsuki"

Itsuku bows profusely with a wild look of fear in his eyes, waiting for Arashi to determine his fate.

TAKESHI reviews his abilities to see if there is something he can do in this situation but does not feel casting his Fetters Of Truth spell is worth casting to find out if the boy stole a chicken and does not offer the suggestion.

SEARCH FOR THE ARTIFACT

Looking at Takeshi, the man whom had motioned him over, Ito drew upon is special status as a member of the clergy.  While he did not have the social clout to address the samurai, he could, even though it would be inserting himself into a samurai's business, address one of the servants on the side - provided he did not intrude directly between the samurai and those he was in conversation with.

Moving around to Takeshi, Hiro, and Ayare, Ito says, Forgive the rude intrusion, he whispers.  I could not help but notice that your master is of the Michizane Clan.  Ito nods his head in the direction of the emblazoned Michizane mon.  That clan's honor is famous and it would be a pleasure if I could, in some way, aid in this chicken conundrum.  There is not a hint of sarcasm in his voice or demeanor.

If your master has the time and interest to pursue this issue personally, of course, I would not presume to step forward.  Michizane fairness is also well known.

However, if his true aim is to speak to the headman on matters of his own business, I could relieve the headman of this judicial duty, investigate myself, and report back to your lord my findings so he could mete out justice.  Or, if he had other matters to attend to, I could consult with the headman after your lord is done with him and aid the headman in resolving the issue.

He has not spoken loudly, but not so softly that Arashi and the others couldn't hear.  Ito bows again. I am Ito.  A Shinto Shinsoku (Shinto priest not attached to a particular shrine or religious group).

In reply to Ito (msg # 46):

Takeshi whispers low enough so as to be heard only by Ito, Ayare, and Hiro (any others may make a perception roll to try and hear if they so desire)

"I think this means little in the way of life, at least, as far as the chicken goes. We will see what happens."

In his mind Takeshi is thinking there could be much more to this. How will Arashi handle the situation. Will he make friends? Rule with fear? What kind of name will he start establishing for himself? Arashi the just? the cruel? the weak? the man of harmony? It is difficult to tell at this point and Takeshi is watching the situation play out with great interest. He also glances at Sasumi on occasion to see her reaction.

Ito watches the drama unfold but keeps a keen eye on Horu.  He's looking for glances toward Baku or his son that would give the impression of annoyance or dislike or even hatred while the two tell their story to Arashi-san.

Effect of 8.

In reply to Arashi Fukushu (msg # 48):

By now, there are people peeking around corners and through windows to see what is happening.
The boy, Itsuki, holds his own and does not seem as scared as the other villagers present.
"I have done no such thing, somebody else must have stole the chicken. The old man is just mad at me for kissing his daughter!"

Horu begins defending himself "That has nothing to do with this. You are a trouble maker and the matter of my daughter has already been resolved. You will not be seen with her again. So, if you didn't steal the chicken, I am sure you know who did!?"

Itsuki : "I know nothing of your stupid chicken."

Baku : "Please Horu, before we are all killed here today. Drop this charge against my son and pray to the gods for forgiveness."

Horu stands open mouthed for a moment, ready for a response that quickly dies on his tongue. "I was wrong, I believe now that Itsuki did not do this. Please have mercy." He turns his head to the ground and squints his eyes closed, praying as he has never done before.

Goshu the village hetman looks quickly at the others near him but the question was probably directed at himself. He did not understand the change in topic but it is not healthy to question a samurai. He had never heard of this Kannon Bodhisattva, but he would be willing to bet that she is part of the Buddhist religion.

"So sorry Arashi-sama, I do not believe so." Not sure if he should speak further without invitation or if Arashi is expecting more of an explanation, he decides to add "I think it is a shrine to the Kami of silence."

In reply to Arashi Fukushu (msg # 56):

Takeshi takes the involved parties off to the side so Arashi can tend to other matters.

Goshu awaits for Arashi's order, wondering if he will require Fumito (the town gardener/priest) or if he will discuss the temple with the newcomer, Ito (also Gakusho).

10 minutes later Takeshi will tell Arashi (in private so his follow-up actions cannot lose face) that the boy did not steal the chicken and is just a wild youngster. The owner of the missing chicken thought the boy stole it but now realizes he did not. They do not have a good relationship which prompted the accusation. In fact, he did not investigate much on his own and a wild animal could have taken his chicken. Nothing is known about the missing chicken and where it actually went. There is nothing further going on.
