Exploration Adventure - A Quiet Town
Beneath the neon sign that proudly announced the words 'Frank's Diner' the door to the chrome RV swung open with a creak. On the opposite side the sounds of conversation floated out and the smell of cooking bacon was warm and rich. This was a little corner of reality that didn't realize the End had come and gone it seemed, it was bustling along like it was any normal day of the week.

Stepping through the door you find yourself inside the same diner that was advertised outside. Black and white linoleum tiles were clean and bright underfoot, a half dozen booths were set along the front window and a counter ran the length of the wall where a tired but upbeat waitress was bustling back and forth with drinks and food. Most of the patrons inhabiting the diner were people in their middling years, their hair had a smattering of gray and their waistlines said they never missed a meal. As Neru came running in first a few of the diners smiled warmly at the exuberant child. When Nox came a few steps later a few of the ladies did a double take and one of them gave her hair a few pats to ensure it was the proper shape.

"Afternoon darlin," the waitress crooned to Neru, "Are you and your father here for our apple pie special?" The door behind them had shut and a sign on its front indicated it was a supply closet, but that didn't seem to phase the waitress.

Through the wide windows along the front of the diner you could see a sleepy main street, a few wide bodied cars with fins and wood paneling puttered down the road, picturesque street lamps were interspersed every dozen feet and people walked hand in hand or pushing along baby carriages. It was entirely idyllic. It was hard to believe that a dozen feet away there was a world of wreckage waiting behind a door.

But where exactly was this strange place that was so far removed from the wastes and devastation?

Outside at the far end of the street appeared to be city hall. Flyers were fixed to the street lamps outside and across the street several shops seemed to doing their daily business.

OOC: This is an exploration adventure. Each participant will get 5 posts to explore this newly discovered Realm. At that point the adventure will be concluded and any discovered Aspects will be up for grabs and the Realm will be converted into a free play realm.

The smell of breakfast coupled with the offer of apple pie was more than enough for Neru's mouth to start watering.

Neru turned around, and facing Nox exclaimed in an excited tone. "Could we accept this good lady's offer papa?"

But the mind of a child was wild, and never stood still for too long. Past the temptation of the delicious food the diner had to offer, hid a greater treasure. The smell of adventure soon overpowered the bacon, and as he had experienced before during the cataclysn and later when claiming the road, a strange sense of urgency lingered in the air. This realm had something to offer, and it's lack of patience was rivaled only by Neru's. There would be time for breakfast later, right now adventure was calling. Sprinting through the diner's door, Neru took onto the streets, rushing to get lost in the pincturesque town.

Nox flashed a charming smile at the waitress.

"You'll have to excuse him, sweetheart. You know how hyperactive kids can be these days. The little scamps! They just want to see and do everything." he said with a smile.

"I had better go look for my son. But you can bet your hat we'll be back for some good old fashioned apple pie though, you know it 'darlin. This place looks perfect for when we need to get lunch." he said, trying his best to fall into character out of amusement more than anything.

"Well bless your heart, look at the time. We'll see you soon now. Keep a table open for us ok?" Nox said as he courteously gave a wave and turned and headed out onto the street as well.

Neru had the right idea though. This place was calling to him to explore it and he felt time was running out.

Nox headed off up the street toward city hall.

Exploration Adventure - A Quiet Town
Taking off down the streets, Neru lost himself in exploration. It would be a stretch to say he ran wild, in his current state he could run to about the end of the block before he had to stop and catch his breath. So he proceeded with charging off, slowing to a halt to huff and puff, look around to get his bearings and off he charged again. This heedless exploration took him off the main street of the quiet town and Neru quickly discovered that there wasn’t too much else in this town to discover. Two street away he started to find personal homes, all of them with neatly mowed laws, a few with boats in the driveways. Children played in the grass and dog followed Neru along their fence lines. Proceeding further the house started to become fewer and further between as the countryside started to encroach. It was one of these roads that took Neru to the city limits. There a brightly painted sign said “Now leaving Littleton, come again soon!”

Though leaving Littleton didn’t look too feasible. The road up ahead ended in a jagged line and beyond that was simply… nothing. It was looking like Neru was out of options when a car drove out from the nothingness and screeched to a halt. A bright red Cadillac with its hood down and a beautiful young woman behind the wheel… who was screaming in horror. Her eyes were wide enough to see the whites and her face was wrenched into an expression of terror while she clutched at her throat. But then she stopped, blinked a few times and look about. “Oh, silly me, must have been my imagination,” she commented. She looked at Neru and said, “I just had the worst nightmare that someone with a horrible hook hand came and slashed me to ribbons. Funny the things you daydream about while driving.” She sounded bubbly now, the terror had drained out of her. Pulling out sunglasses from her glove box she put them on and drove off.

Aspect Available at end of adventure: Did Someone Say Deja Vu?

Meanwhile back on Main Street Nox had watched Neru take off and was left to his own devices. City Hall seemed to be a solid starting point so he ambled up the street to the dignified building at the far end. The God of Darkness arrived just in time to see a harried man going up the stairs while a woman trotted at his heels calling out questions while she clutched a pen and notepad. “Mr. Mayor, is it true that three teens were killed by a sewer alligator? What does the city plan to do to stop this vicious creature? Are there going to be laws passed to prevent flushing others down into the sewer? What do you have to say about the rumors that this alligator could walk on two legs?” The mayor for his part shook his head and repeated ‘no comment’ several times as he disappeared up and into the building.

Not far from the main entrance of City Hall there was a small shrine of candles, flowers and photographs. Three large pictures of a strapping boy and two attractive girls smiled out of those photos. “In Loving memory,” a placard announced. Another said, in poor taste but seemed to be written by a youth, “Only a sewer gator was tough enough to sack the star QB! We love ya Kurt!” Around this memorial Nox could feel the flicker of lingering presence. Ghosts drawn by the emotional tribute. But also fading? There was a strange sensation to these ghost. All spirits were ephemeral things, but these ones felt particularly fleeting.

Aspect Available at adventure conclusion: In Memory Of

Meanwhile back at the diner a third strange wandered inside as Abethur crossed the wreckage of the Wastes and made his way into the far more welcoming restaurant and the pocket world surrounding it.

So the town was smaller than expected. Fitting for a place named Littleton, Neru thought. The horror movie moment that Neru had witnessed didn't interest him in the slightest. Horror movies had some credit to it, but it was mostly because parents didn't allow their children to watch them. Once you had seen them, they weren't anything special.

Turning around and leaving the edge of the town behind, Neru moved back to the houses he had seen. While he was sprinting this way, he had seen some seemingly playful dogs on the yards to both sides of the street. Going to play with them was a good call, so he decided that was the next step of his adventure on Littleton.

Interesting. This town seemed like a mish-mash of suburban stereotypes that Nox had witnessed from the edges of the darkness of many worlds. He chuckled softly to himself about alligators in the sewers. He knew THOSE rumor's were far more true than people believed.

He wanted to take more of a look around though. And now that he knew where city hall was and also the shrine of candles and the sewer thing, he decided to walk - randomly deciding - to the "left" at the juncture where city hall was and followed the street that way for a while, seeing what new sights revealed themselves to him.

Abethur entered the diner and took up a seat. He watched as Nox and Neru had an exchange about apple pie but ultimately left the diner to explore other things. Abethur on the other hand was not comfortable risking his corporeal form while injured as he was. Instead he turned to the waitress.

"What is apple pie and may I also have some?"

Neru

Skipping and hoping back down the road that led to the edge of town, Neru made his way back towards the suburban sprawl. There were puppies eager to play and Neru was happy to oblige them. Getting back to the houses he was greeted by a Labrador at the fence line, it happily popped up onto tow legs and hung its head over the fence line to smile at the god of children, its tongue lolling out of its mouth and its tail picking up speed. If Neru found a stick or a ball it happily dashed off after it, it even brought the ball back with some coaxing.

While Neru was playing he noticed some children assembling across the street. It was three girls on backs with what looked like a reluctant older brother. They were some distance away and Neru could only hear snippets of their conversation. "No one else remembers..." one was saying. "It's up to us... adults won't help..." another little girl was agreeing. The older boy was shaking his head, "It's not safe." But whatever disagreement he was seemed to be getting overruled by the precious trio of ladies and the four of them all climbed on to their backs and started heading off towards what looked like a wooded part of town.

Nox

Leaving the stops of city hall Nox picked another street at random and ambled on through this strange little town. It was a disconcerting mixture this place. On the surface it was sleepy and peaceful, but Nox's eyes missed little and there was a simmering undertone here. It was hard to put his finger on what exactly that undertone was, at least until he stumbled across it directly. It was three streets further away. A house there was larger than the others and set further back from the road. With its Victorian style design and spacious grounds that had been allowed to overgrow it was now the picture of dereliction, but Nox's eyes saw another layer to it. Glowing sigils painted the door frames and the tree trunks, some sort of black magic that had been etched into this place.

Abethur

Back at the diner, Abethur was experiencing his own adventure. That of apple pie. The waitress smiled at him, though the expression appeared a bit forced as she clearly did a double take of the dirty white cloth Abethur had crafted into a sort of makeshift toga. She ignored the first part of the gods question. "Well of course, hun, you just have a seat and we'll get you all served up." And she did just as promised. Soon a steaming slice of sweet apple pie was set in front of Abethur along with gleaming fork and a napkin. Abethur had the chance to answer his own question first hand.

Whether Abethur had eaten his fill or decided the pie wasn't to his liking, eventually the second part of his adventure came about as the waitress brought over a slip of paper and sat it on the table for him. "No rush, sweetie, just bringing you the bill for whenever you feel like it." A bill for which Abethur certainly did not have any currency. Perhaps this was a quieter adventure of sorts, but it was certainly an obstacle.

Abethur considered his ragged clothing and those of the people around him and decided that he would relent and used Evolve to convert the crude cloths into something more akin to clothing. Since he wasn't expressly interested in clothing he intended for something similar to robes but he would live with whatever he obtained.

Eating the apple pie with his hands, fingers and all, he found that the food was quite good. Delicious in fact. He ate the entire slice and was licking his fingers intently and without social grace when the waitress approached him with the check. He looked to it in confusion.

"What is a bill? Is it as delicious as apple pie?"

Abethur was not unfamiliar with currency, persay, but he had always simply obtained what he desired as a god. He never bought anything nor had any need for coinage. That was the domain of mortals after all, obtaining transient wealth for transient belongings.

"Well, now that is more like it. Sorry boy, I'll come visit later"

Neru patted the head of the dog he was currently entertaining (and being entertained back in kind) before sprinting on a similar matter as before after the children. He probably couldn't keep up with them in his current state, but he knew where they were heading. Well, he didn't know what was exactly there, but at least he knew enough to follow them. And so he did, wanting to witness the story of the four brave heroes (soon to be five, of course, as he was planning to steal the spotlight... just after catching his breath one more time...)

This was it. Nox could feel something big and important was here, hidden in ways most would be unable to notice. He wondered if this town knew that this Victorian house had small innocuous trappings of the occult and the arcane? He knew he had to explore this - to make it more real. Something about the property and its surrounding land felt dark and ominous and foreboding...and of course, when was Nox NOT intrigued by the dark?

Nox went across the street and walked carefully onto the property, sweeping the place with his ever-watchful gaze. He approached some of the tree trunks and began investigating the glyphs, and tried to determine more of their properties.

Abethur

"Money, honey," the waitress said with a hint of concern. She was looking at his clothes again and confusion crossed her features as he no longer wore the simple toga but a t-shirt and shorts. Certainly not classy, but certainly more appropriate. "You do have a way to pay don't you?" Looking up she made eye contact through the window that led back tot the kitchen, there a portly man had stopped whatever he'd been doing and was watching the unfolding payment drama. A few of the other patrons were turning to watch.

"Lou called out today," the man in the kitchen slowly said, as though the idea was that didn't want to be fully drawn forth. "I suppose he can pay off his tab by cleaning plates."

The waitress looked relieved at the suggestion, turning to Abethur she looked at him then said, "Well? What are you waiting for, go on into the back, there's aprons there you can wear." The saccharine sweet had left her voice and been replace with impatience.

Nox

Pushing open the creaking gate Nox crossed the overgrown yard and fearlessly strode up to this house of ill intentions. The grounds there felt quieter than the street only a dozen paces away. The atmosphere had changed from sleepy suburbia to tense expectation, as though the whole world had leaned in to watch as Nox dared cross this threshold. Climbing the sagging wooden stairs, Nox found the front door of the home was open, it swung open at his touch.

Inside the air smelled of a place that had long been hidden away from the light. Nox knew the smell quite well. Regardless of the deep shadows or beams of light creeping through the dusty windows Nox was able to see quite comfortable. Despite its current state, the house had seen use. The dust on the floor was disturbed. Just off the main entrance a living room was largely empty. It's hardwood floor had been covered in painted scrawls, arcane sigils and symbols. They were malevolent things, meant for harm and ill will.

Neru

At the edge of town a huffing and puffing Neru caught up to the biking quartet where the roads ended and the woods began. They had ridden down the slope and there the bikes had been dropped with the casual disregard of youth. A run down little cabin was visible up ahead and through the foliage and the three girls were examining it while they spoke, the boy they had dragged along was kicking at the dirt a few feet away. Their words carried up clearly enough in the quiet of the woods.

"Okay, so this is where the monster went to the other night. We should figure out where to set the traps. If we catch it and bring it back to our parents then they'll have to do something. Zach, you can get rope and stuff from your dads hardware store right? We'll also need mouse traps, some rocks to work as a counter weight for a snare trap, ummm..." she trailed off as her young mind continued to spin up various mechanisms for dealing with monsters.

How feasible were all those notions? It was hard to say, but they were certainly inventive.

Neru stepped forward, walking slowly as he was still catching his breath. He adressed the girl that was concocting the plan he overheard.

"I'm Neru. I fought monsters before, so you could use my experience. Let's build that trap of yours, there isn't much time left. Strange things are happening in Littleton, and it's up to us to stop it."

OOC: I really want to go into the house and honestly probably will as a new adventure or something after the exploration is done, but I still have 2 more exploration posts left including this one and don't want to waste them.

Nox took note of the house - it highly intrigued him and he intended to explore it more later. Really he wanted to explore a lot of this strange little pocket of suburbia later. But he felt now was not the time to focus and be fixated, so he closed the door to the house and walked back out to the street.

He decided that he wanted to look for either any other interesting features he stumbled across, or if nothing really came to view he wanted to look for an entrance to the sewers. Perhaps there was a river or creek or something he could find a large entrance to, or at least a normal sewer grate that was accessible to an actual human-sized person. Or shadowstep-able anyway.

Nox thus continued to wander down the street.

Abethur nodded in understanding, rising from the booth.

"Oots."

He moved into the kitchen and put on the apron, wrong the first time and he stumbled with tying it off. Abethur was only passingly familiar with such items but he did know what dishes were and that mortals cleaned them with water and chemicals.

So he began in earnest, putting himself to the task to the best of his abilities.

Leaving the house in peace for now, Nox retreated to get a better lay of the land.

Feature Added: The Witching House

Rather than wander aimlessly Nox decided to find the entrance to the sewers since that evidently held some dangers. It took some wandering, but Nox's notion to look for lower ground proved fruitful. On the far edge of town there was a gully, a narrow two lane road crossed a narrow rocky ravine, a thin rivulet of water ran along the bottom. At the far end a huge drain offered a pathway into the sewers beneath this quaint town.

Neru

The three girls blinked in surprise at Neru's arrival, the older boy edged closer protectively. But when he offered to help they exchanged glances and didn't second guess having an extra set of hands.

At the wooded edge of town Neru devoted himself to joining this trio of children in their plans to nab a monster. The boy named Zach left and returned with rope and the five of them busied themselves with tying knots, arranging trip wires and setting snares. One of the girls was quite handy, she mentioned being in an outdoor club. It was starting to get dark and the five were sweaty and dirty, but satisfied with the efforts they'd undertaken.

"I told my mom I'm sleeping over at your house," one girl shared and the other admitted they'd had the same plan, so they were free to stay out that evening. And so they waited. And waited. It grew dark, but it stayed comfortably warm, it must be summer here. Crickets were chirping and despite the danger of their task the children started nodding off. Their slumber was disrupted through when crashing came through the underbrush, something darted out from the house, fast and strong and agile. It careened through the rope traps and snares like they were cobwebs, with loud snapping of ropes and breaking of branches it passed and into Littleton proper. The children all looked at one another wide eyed. It seemed more than mere children's traps would be needed.

Plot Hook Available at adventure conclusion: The Cabin in the Woods

Abethur

Back at the diner Abethur rose to his own challenge. Heading back into the kitchen he found the designated apron managed to get it put on rather messily, then moved over to the dishes piled up in a sink. With a bit more direction from the short order chef who seemed bewildered by Abethur's own bewilderment, the god of evolution evolved to meet the situation. His hands steadied, his mind cleared a bit to figure out the proper way of scrubbing the pans, and he worked. It was long and tiring. It turned out intellect was not the most important trait, stamina seemed to be the issue. His shoulders and arms were burning long before the pile wear nearly done, but he still had to press on. It was growing dark outside when he finished his hands entirely numb and his shoulders knotted and sore.

He wished he could obtain a healing factor in this instance but decided it was better to not have such things. He did not wish to become overly attached to the flesh of this form. Still there was a sense of accomplishment in having labored in such a way.

Satisfied for now, Nox decided that he should head back into town in Case Neru was still wandering the streets. He certainly had revealed the locations of several interesting places: the witching house, the sewers, he passed city hall and the shrine of candles. He intended to inspect all of them a little more thoroughly over time. But for now, he had to get back to town.

He was still curious about the town's city hall and the mayor he saw walking by. So he made his way back to city hall - inconspicuously darting through the shadows when no one was watching to help conserve his stamina. But when he arrived back at city hall, he entered the city hall building proper and took a look inside.

Neru had been running around all day, so he knew his limits all too well by now. The cataclysm had crippled him heavily, and even a menial task like chasing after some bikes was really stressing for his body. "Come on people, let's go. That monster is not gonna get caught all on his own."

He starts to sprint, but immediately comes to a stop and turns around.

Hopping on the back of one of the bikes, Neru and his newfound friends went hurtling off into the night pedaling after the strange beast. It was testament to their bravery that these four children with hardly a way to defend themselves would give chase to... something. Turning down one of the suburban streets the bikes skidded to a halt. Up ahead the door to one of the homes was torn entirely from its frame and shards of wood littered the front stoop. Inside bloodcurdling screams suddenly broke the silence of the night. A light came on in and in the window the shadow of something hulking and ominous lunged across the lit square. Then the screaming stopped. The children were wide eyed and looked back and forth at one another, then one of the girls shook her head. "I'm going home." The rest seemed to share her sentiment, the monster hunt was over.

Returning to city hall, the building was dark and locked, but that didn't stop the god of darkness, a short step from one shadow to then next brought him inside. It was quiet, all the civil servants had gone home for the day. All but one. Down the hall light was still pouring out from an office. Looking through that open door, Nox found a man asleep at his desk. The desk beneath him was littered in newspaper, they seemed to span decades, all the headlines were similar. 'Two slain in grisly murder' 'The Lover's Lane murders go unexplained' 'Hockeymask murderer remains at large' Dozens of different cases, all seemingly unrelated. It seemed Littleton had a long and bloody history.

The Witching House

Aspects Available

Did Someone Say Deja Vu?: Time here seemed to be constantly looping back on itself. Consequences here were not permanent, they were lessons to be learned from. Unfortunately the residents of Littleton did not seem to be able to remember those lessons, but per
Supernatural Power: Rewound Time – The ability allows a recent event to be rewound for the user. It can only have occurred within the last 5 seconds. (This only impacts the users immediate area, letting them retry something they failed or a consequence they suffered. Results and permanence will vary based upon the scope of the abilities use)

In Memory Of: Spirits were adrift entities by nature, they were no fixed to the material world or the afterlife, they were in flux. It made them easy to ensnare to gods who were used to such things. Such spectral entities could then make for useful servitors. Their ability to engage in labor was limited, knocking over a bottle or flipping the pages of a book tended to be the extent of it, but they were not barred by physical restraints.
Supernatural Ability: Summon Ghostly Servitor – Call up one of three ghostly servitors to do your bidding. (They have limited physical interaction with the world.)

Vindictive Writings: Wicked words and malevolent meaning. Words have power. It's all in the way that those words are arranged and the intent behind them. Rediscover this ability and empower those scratchings on paper.
Supernatural Ability: Patient Power - You can inscribe your other supernatural abilities onto paper so that they might be used at a later time or by another individual. This ability does nothing by itself, it augments other powers. (At it's basic level it can only create two empowered writings.)

The Impossible Machine: A rope slung across a branch, a weight suspended on one end, a taut branch at the other, precariously balanced cans waiting to be knocked down to trigger the next step. Some machines, devices and contraptions are so needlessly complex that they somehow manage to work. There's an art to crafting such devices.
Skill: The Impossible Trap - Take some time to form a needlessly complex trap which will somehow still be effective.

The Cabin in the Woods: Out on the edge of Littleton an abandoned cabin lay overgrown and forgotten. On some nights the children of Littleton swear that a beast comes from there. And its true, some sort of savagery still lingers in that place.
Plot Hook: The Thread of Sinew - This thread promises bodily violence, animalistic violence. One of the Aspects it promises is Feral - Enter a state of unrestrained rage and violence. Your combat capabilities are heightened significantly. (Scales with your combat abilities)

An Honest Days Work: Simple labor had its merits. It reminded one that true strength came from ones own hands, their own sweat and blood. Anything beyond ones own hands was unreliable and fleeting.
Stats: +2 stats, +5% Inspiration

Discretion and Valor: Sometimes learning ones limits and stopping there was the wisest move one could make. And learning how to push those limits was even better. Live and learn as they say.

Exploration Adventure - A Quiet Town
Nox got back to center of town, and it wad dark now. He decided to take a peek inside city hall, and discovered that the place hid a grisly duality of sorts. His affinity for darkness helped him quite a bit, but he was worried about Neru and Abethur. Would they be ok?

He blinked through the darkness, and once again headed outside. He looked down the street, as he noticed activity at the Shrine of candles. And blinked over there as he inspected it curiously. And much to his surprise, it would seem that the spirits of the dead clung to the place still and yet had nowhere to go. No real heaven or hell existed for the likes of them anymore it seemed. Just the inevitable void that would consume this place eventually. For while the Diner felt stable the town as a whole felt like it was in a weird flux.

Instead, why waste such a resource. He once had vast influence and countless minions, but now Nox had just scraps of himself left. But he reached out his hand toward the shrine and the candles flickered out one by one, taken by darkness, as Nox used the small spark of his divinity to claim their souls for himself. They would not rest in heaven or hell, but somewhere in between.

And the three ghosts would make useful servitors for him as well. And perhaps one day, he could empower them into something truly fearsome. But for now, he took their souls for himself.

Exploration Adventure - A Quiet Town
Well, this guys weren't fun. Neru simply let them get away, a look of dissapointment in his eyes.

"This is a really bad story. 'And so, the heroes turned away, letting the monster slowly kill everyone in the town'. That's an awful ending"

Despite that, he couldn't really blame the children. They had initiative, and the monster had proven to be stronger than them, escaping undeterred from the trap they had set up. Maybe it wasn't that the children weren't brave enough, but the monster was simply a threat that Littleton couldn't handle. But now Littleton wasn't alone in the surrounding void anymore, it had Neru. And Nox, and Abethur, if they wanted to help. Next time, Neru will design the trap. And no monster will be able to escape it!

Exploration Adventure - A Quiet Town
Abethur felt the power of the Universe loosed in his labors, gathering and collecting into something tangible. Something to be claimed. He reached out with his mind and his will, drawing it within himself. He could feel his body changing then but not like it did with Adapt. It was permanent, an infusing of vital energy. The manifestation of hard but simple work.
