Adventure: The Taming of the Grasslands
"Yes, yes, to the constructs!" Elakeen's voice crowed from the golem happily. Gevenros grumbled, but he could hear that he'd be outvoted. He mumbled something about 'at least someone is checking' then the body the two shared jerked and twitched and started down a side corridor and Neru followed after.

The Constructs

Clearly familiar with the route, the simple service golem containing the Shaper and the Keeper confidently navigated the halls of the ruined fort-city. Their simple and inflexible body did not offer the normal cues for what they were feeling, but the occasional "Powers that be," and "How is this possible?" Neru occasionally overhead gave him some insight into the horror Elakeen was feeling at the sight of her beloved city in ruins. Gevenros was quiet, perhaps his age his given him more perspective. The gloomy mood brightened a few degrees though when the golem reached a set of double doors and pushed them open with great effort to reveal a grand workshop that was unscathed by the ruin of the rest of the keep.

The room was two stories tall, great hooks and cables hung from the ceiling to make great projects a possibility. Scaffolding around the edges of the room provided multiple tiers to approach these large projects. Down at ground level the edges of the chamber were ringed by workbenches, each with gleaming metal tools laid out precisely. Some raw materials were still laid out nearby, metal plates, long coils of wire, rivets, bolts and less readily identifiable materials. It was truly an impressive workshop and the golem practically leapt from station to station as Elakeen giddily examined her lost treasures. Then she drew Neru's attention to the most immediately useful feature. Three complete golems were there.

Wildly different in design, one was elegantly designed, it looked almost human, if that were human were made of steel polished to elegant perfection and shaped with an artists hands. The next was clearly intended for work, less refined in its aesthetics, it had four arms, one of which did not have hands but rather a hammer, screwdriver and thick wire cutters that could be rotated into place as necessary. The last was different still, round and bulbous, it almost looked like a hunchback due to a large glass dome on its back. This one had little in the way of protective metal skin leaving metal wires and twisting gears exposed, along with crystals that the other two seemed to lack.

"Oh wonderful! A construction form! I'll be much more efficient in that!" Elakeen said, looking at the four armed construct. She paused then looked around and then added glumly, "But the soul extraction apparatus here is crude, it won't be able to separate our essence from each other. We'll have to keep sharing a body for the time being."

"Nonsense, that thing is a crude hammer. We must have the sensor model so I can monitor the arcane energies." Gevenros said, the other arm of the golem reaching out to gesture at the hunch-based golem. Again, this divided mind would require an outside party to resolve the dispute.

Decision

The Engineering Construct: With four arms and precise tools built into it, this vessel is made for the task of construction and with its extra limbs allows the engineer to do the work of two people at once.

The Elegant Construct: Clearly designed for day to day use, this golem did not boast any specialization in its design, simple pure elegance and efficiency. It was as much art as function. It would not offer any hinderances for basic tasks, but also no benefits.

The Sensor Golem: Built to work with arcane energies and flows, this golem is fragile so as not to dull its senses, it allows the individual to work with arcane energies with far more ease than other construct forms.

The Attunement

With some directions from Gevenros, Nox and Seris climbed higher through the ruin fortress. With the number of collapsed floors and ceilings it made for difficult work, luckily Seris was in healthy shape now and Nox's ability to step through shadows continued to prove versatile. Steadily they climbed upwards. There were a number of magical curiosities to see, each time they found one they briefly felt a surge of excitement, "Was this it?" but each time it proved to simply be a curiosity, whether that was a painting of a bird that sang, a bridge that floated up to meet their feet, or crystals that glowed to life to reveal their path. Clearly in its prime this had truly been a city overflowing with magical wonders. But when they found the arcane attunement Gevenros had mentioned there was no doubt it.

Situated near the very top of the fortress was a huge stone chamber. It had no adornments and no furniture, the entirety of the room seemed to be devoted to six panels hung at even intervals along the walls. Their alcoves had no backs and opened out to the night air (It had grown dark since they began their journey) and a cool breeze flowed through the chamber. Each of these panels was filled with a storm of gray and white sparks which ran across their surface and occasionally burst out with crackles and pops to send motes of light skimming across the floors. Each of these panels also radiated a sense of magic, but in its current form it was chaotic and unfocused.

Brass placards were situated in the floor in front of each of these magical panes. "Antagym, red for fire and passions," read one. "Olectation, white for clarity and truth," each brass panel was similarly engraved, with an esoteric word, a color and some vagary. What they said was unimportant anyways. It seemed at one point each of these panels had been affiliated with a school of magic, but they'd lain abandoned so long they'd lost their affiliations. It was the loss of countless hours of attunement and study. But also opportunity. These magical loci were now blank slates, quite literally, and waiting to be written upon. Powerful relics of a bygone era, they now offered a new path forward.

Magic had been destroyed as well when the world ended. But here it could be reforged, hammered back into usable form, but in its current state it could be given new shape, color, context. It simply needed the proper will imposed upon it.

Magical Attunement

Decision

Schools of Magic: A god may touch one of the magical loci and begin the laborious process of building a school of magic that could be practiced, taught and refined. It would take time and effort and even when the initial work was completed that school of magic would be a fledgling thing that would require nourishment and care if it was going to grow beyond a mere bud and into a might tree.

Harvested Power: But there were easier paths available. A panel could be shattered destroying the loci but providing a great burst of power with which a god could craft themselves a new artifact of great magical power.

Infuse Power: Lastly, that power could be siphoned off, held by the god and then infused into another entity. In this way a mortal might be turned into a mage at the snap of ones fingers, a statue might gain sudden awareness and powers, a tree be awakened, or countless other possibilities. There was no reclaiming this power once infused, it and the entity would be irreversibly mingled.

"Hmmmm..."

Neru pondered for a moment the options before him. It seemed that, even though it was never openly stated, he had the power to decide on which body they were taking.

"Well, as I see it, this is just a temporary body for at least one of you. So I think it is alright if you get the Engineering Construct, which seems more sturdy than the one Gevenros wants."

These words have Neru's seal of approval

Nox considered a bit.

While the possibility of creating a new school of magic appealed to Nox, he didn't really care what other people did with their magic. He mainly cared about his own personal development, and on trying to slowly scrape together some of his old power with the possibility of transcending even his old divine state. Mind you, this was at the cost of being currently mortal in power as a fallen god. Grand designs, itty bitty living space.

But he acknowledged the potency of the loci as a rare find he may not have again or at least for quite some time. And really...he was still divine, even if he currently was something of a joke. But divine regardless. And he needed an icon of power. Something that was uniquely his that would help bolster his legend. Thor had a hammer. Zeus his lightning bolts. Athena her shield. Well that shield was passed around a bit. Hades his helmet. Nox needed something of a mythic symbol for himself. Especially now, when he was weak and vulnerable still.

He reached out toward one of the panels, and it suddenly began to turn an inky black filled with small starry twinkling points of light. It shifted to a periwinkle hue before suddenly shattering into many pieces! The pieces fell to the ground, while the power within coalesced in a nebulous black inky haze that streamed across the chamber like flowing tnedrils into Nox's outstretched hand! The darkness solidified then, forming something new and wondrous. An artifact of power fit for a god.

Harvested Power chosen.

The Construct

Down in the belly of the fortress Neru gave his vote and broke the tie. Elakeen gave a happy crow while Gevenros grumbled, "I suppose if it's short term," and already the crude construct was dancing over to a nearby platform. Elakeen clearly knew what she was doing as she reached up and started to pull down metal coils and pins. Her simple block hands struggled with the fine work, but she managed to fix the pinning's into place. "There, now Neru, can you press that button there?" she asked? Her tone towards the god had markedly warmed. Following her instructions, Neru found a silver plated button on the panel and depressed it.

Latent magics woke and crystals dotting the machines burned back to life. The atmosphere became charged as the arcane energy surged. Then the simple golem containing Elakeen and Gevenros shook and spasmed, then collapsed into a heap. At the same time the work golem twitched and straightened. Elakeen's voice was louder as she spoke out, "Now this is a proper body!" The four arms of the new construct stretched and the wrists rotated experimentally. Gevenros quietly quailed, "I can't even feel the arcane at all, what an atrocious hunk of metal."

But it had been decided. When Neru suggest they catch up with the others Gevenros agreed with relief. With the pair of locals leading the way, they quickly made their way up flight after flight of stairs. Near the top of the fortress they found Nox and Seris not long after they happened upon the attunement chambers themselves. "Oh dear, it's as I fear, the locus are no longer attuned. It's a shame, so many thousands of hours of work lost, but no matter, we still have the loci, we'll start anew-" Geveneros was commenting when he was interrupted.

They arrived in time to see Nox bring back a fist and drive it into one of the gray slabs hanging along the walls. Gevenros gave a horrified shriek as the arcane slate disintegrated into shards. "Sacrilege! Desecration!"

OOC: Note that the choices here are not exclusive, everyone could pick the same option if they were so inclined. Nox, let me know what sort of artifact you want to make and we'll hammer out the details!

Seris inspected the crystals with time. She was unsure what to do with them entirely. Though the one that appealed most to her was the crafting of magic. A useful tool and extension of oneself in the world. Something she is out of touch with and was once close to.

Sitting infront of one of the loci, Seris began the process that would take time to start a new magic. Schools of Magic chosen

As she began, she couldn't help but notice Nox. She didn't agree entirely with the method that Nox was choosing. In fact, she wondered if it was a good idea or bad one.

As Nox shattered it, the soul of the old man spoke put from the golem. For some reason, Seris worried the god might have really angered him or it. She was predisposed to not helping him if that was the case. It wasn't like she broke it, or that she owed him anything, in fact she already felt like the two godlings already owed her. Nor did she owe the old man any favors. Seris wanted her reward for almost dying already on a wild hunt.

Neru took note of the hidden approval on Elakeen's words, and counted the whole endeavor as a success. When they arrived at the most magical part of the city, he wandered off and started examining the magical loci with newfound interest. He reached out to one, and put his palm on it, feeling the energies swirling behind. He thought of the power that was trapped inside the artifact, and had an urge to take it for himself and his own. The imps would definitely appreciate such a gift, and it was bound to make both his and their lives more interesting.

Nox's dark eyes glanced over at the golem. It was a cold stare, not a warm one.

"Stop being so dramatic. It is literally impossible for me to be sacrilegious by the way. Look who you're talking to?" he replied cooly. Icily really.

"And the fact of the matter is I had tried to re-attune one of these and a new school of magic was forming. One that tried to devour me as a part of its creation. To sacrifice a portion of my power to the school. But you know what? I've already sacrificed more than enough for this universe already. More than any of you mortals probably will ever truly deserve. I am still undecided if the universe even deserves my help. Or if there's even any point to it. Although I will honor my alliance with the other gods for sure - one good turn deserves another after all and the Darkness does not forget kindness. But I'm here now, so I'll help fix reality until I decide not to." he said.

"But I will NOT give any more of the little embers of my divinity to this loci. So I punched my fist through it rather than let it feast on me. And remember...I'm the one who restored your realm back to reality. Be grateful, and consider this a rent payment. But none of you mortals are worth me sacrificing any more of myself than I already have. I already have granted you an immense gift in letting you all live once again. In giving you a chance to restore yourselves."

The crafting-golem containing Elakeen and Gevenros took a step back and there was silence as the two seemed sufficiently cowed by Nox's ire.

Seris and Neru had approached two of the five remaining tablets and placed hand on them. The crackling gray static of unattuned magic softened as they harmonized the energy and started to impose their will upon the disorder.

Schools of Magic: Neru and Seris, determine what you want your schools of magic to be called, then summarize what you want your magic to accomplish. (Should be described in a single sentence, you're really distilling down what the heart of this magic will be (IE, like how divination is about seeing the future or pyromancy is manipulating fire)

Arcane Artifact: Nox, let me know what sort of artifact you'd like to fashion. Regardless of its other traits, it will inherently grant you +1 Arcanus while wielded reflecting its origins as an arcane locus.

Neru's creativity as the God of Children was always on point, and he came up with what he wanted to achieve with this gift in an instant.

And so he created technasmancy in his mind.

This school of magic was based in the concept that the energies of chaos can be harnessed and adapted into spells. However, it was important that the effects caused by these spells further created chaos, so the energy could be loaned again to the wizards that utilized it. Borrowing the magic from the ether itself meant that most individuals were able to learn techansmancy, but only those who truly embraced chaos would be able to practice it without risking their own sanity; if one tried to use chaotic magic to act in the name of Order, they were bound to be dragged into madness by their own magic.

Adventure: The Taming of the Grasslands

Having sufficiently cowed the mortals in the golem, Nox turned back to the power that was coalescing in his hands. He needed something to be a symbol and an icon. Something to help supplement his weak divinity, for while he was stronger than when he first fell he was still very weak relatively. And he couldn't always rely on Seris either. She might not either want to help or be available to always help him if he were in trouble, and he needed to be able to stand on his own two feet. When he was in his prime, even Zeus and similar powers hesitated to cross him. But now he was about as hearty as a mere mortal child! And he felt something, deep down beneath his cold arrogance and his warm outer demeanor. Something he had not felt in a very, very long time: fear.

Fear? Impossible!

Yes, fear.

He was afraid, on a deep down level that bordered subconscious. He knew deep down that he feared not being abler to protect himself or any allies and followers who depended on him.

He could never admit that to the other gods though. That he feared he could let them down if they ever needed him.

And so the power in his hands began to solidify into a smooth crystalline orb, that was charged with arcane power. This was no mere tool or even an aspect. This was a complete artifact, a singular object of power that contained within it enough energy that could have potentially created an entire school of magic. But it was attuned to Nox's essence now.

The orb had bluish-purplish-black energy that swirled within it around a single pinkish-white "eye" that occasionally sent pearlescent streaks throughout the interior of the orb. The light would never hinder Nox's darkness of course, attuned as it was to his pattern, but there was nothing natural about this thing as it began to float in the air and slowly orbit Nox all on its own, defying physics. It was tied to his theogenic field though, so it moved with him and stayed with him on a metaphysical level, and resisted attempts by others to touch or steal it.

Adventure: The Taming of the Grasslands
At Neru's touch the arcane slab shimmered and rippled, it's shape becoming less distinct and the gray turning into an array of colors as it became attuned with chaos. This was the formation of the new power that was known as Technasmancy, a collaboration with chaos, a delight for tricksters, mischief makers or those who wanted to watch the world turned on its head. Those who would try to harness the power to contain chaos could do so... but it would eventually come at a price.

Meanwhile Nox's shattered slab had reshaped itself becoming a delicate piece of purple-black glass which floated into the air and took up orbit around the god. It was a silent, small thing, but it carried a powerful presence and its enigmatic nature would the matter of mortal gossip for generations to come.

With the arcane loci disrupted the gods could feel a shift in the Grasslands as they settled into place and properly joined with the Reforged Realm. Evidently whatever aura these ancient artifacts had been putting off had disrupted the process and now that they had tamed these mysterious plains were now properly a part of the young growing realm.

The Grasslands have been tamed!

Seris's idea and workings of the magic were a bit raw in nature. It took time and consideration to make it's ground work and start branching to what she hoped for. It was laborious, which annoyed her at times.

Finally though, she began to see the fruits of her effort as the magic came to life as a seedling. Something she could begin to work with in the future.

In short, the magic itself is Terror.

Encompassing the real, illusion, and dream. It invaded those subject to it with the sense and realization of true horrors and fear. Plucking them from one's darkest and innermost thoughts to make them real or even to haunt one. Almost even like a curse it infects them and drowns one's life with all it's aspects, breaching even their dreams. Molding their weaknesses and fears to prey on them, instilling senses of dread.

Adventure: The Taming of the Grasslands
Reached out a clawed finger, Seris touched another of the arcane slabs and black veins spread out from where her finger pressed. It was a shimmer darkness that seemed to be full of sharp angles and hints of movement beneath the surface. Seris's will was imposed, her school of magic would be Terror, a magic centered around wielding fear as a weapon. But this was only the first faint trace of the magic, much as Seris might loathe laborious work, she would need to dedicate herself to studying this magic if she wanted it to reach its full potential.

So the gods had claimed their prizes. But there had been six arcane locus. That left three still floating unattuned.

The golem housing the souls of the old kingdom had approached one of the loci. Two of the metal hands were placed on the slab and the golem was shaking his head sorrowfully with a click-click-click of the metal joints. "This body is an unresponsive husk. I'm next to a very cornerstone of magic and I can hardly even feel it." Gevenros was quietly mourning to himself.

"You'll be fine." Elakeen said impatiently from the same mouth, both of them speaking in quiet tones, clearly not wanting to draw the ire of the gods again, "Just wait till you see the sorts of things I can make with four arms."

Seris felt with this magic, she had a semblance of her once self. She was no where near as strong, she could not keep what she devoured, and nor could she devour everything. Now, she could bring terror again. Though, it would require work and dedication.

Seris glanced at the golem and spoke, "Hopefully soon thee can also have different bodies. Mineself would like to gaze upon what it is thee can make with thy labor and efforts of mind. So far, thee has impressed me, so far. At least with the ability to remove and inhabit one's soul through a mixture of technology and knowledge of magic."

Giving a fanged smiled, Seris spoke, "I would not worry too much about Nox either. He is rather pompess for a diety, even a primordial at that. Where I come from, he didn't exist. We had Erebus, a very different being than Nox, yes indeed. One who would not care for the eerie or prattling of beings lesser than oneself. Nox cares little for the effort of mortals. Though he should be thankful of the gift he has taken, had it not been for the mortals one saved, his pretty new toy wouldn't exist. Nor can he claim the effort of your home existing here now by himself had I let him die in the stead of my going to battle." Seris clicked a claw against the stone as she finished then blew the dust off of it. She spoke cooly and without care. Though her eyes and face glowed with anticipation, as if awaiting for a delicious response for the effort of her words. All for her own amusement at the situation.

Patting the golem's shoulder, she spoke again, "So thank you for the gift to reward my efforts. I hope to see what more you can accomplish, you two."

"You do know that Erebus is both my brother and the father of some of my children as Nyx, right? Seris your...youthful ignorance is showing through right now. Best stop before you put your foot in your mouth so deep you chew it off." he replied cooly.

"And while I acknowledge you were very useful and needed even to beat the many armed man, without me the sphere would have been smashed and the realm lost. Say what you want, but this place only exists because of me. Because I risked myself and saved it from destruction. Don't try and de-aggrandize me for your own benefit. You'll just make yourself look foolish." he added.

"Now... just so we don't leave on an entirely icy note. I value your prowess and we beat the many armed man and saved the orb by working together. My ghosts distracted him while I rescued the orb and you sliced and chewed him up. I will not downplay your value in that fight. I hope you'll one day day stop downplaying me."

He looked quickly over to the golem.

"And I don't hate mortals, by the way. I just don't love them either. Especially ones that get uppity or ungracious. I value mortals by their merit, not just because they exist. I look forward to seeing what you two will do with the second chance I've given you."

Seris smile widened as she chuckled to herself, not just because of her own efforts, but Neru's as well. "No, there was only Erebus. No Nyx, no Nox. Shortsightedness across the notion of multitude. Thee plainly didn't exist where mineself is from. Though to be frank, my existence and realm connected to a reality that was already a distortion to another that I speak of. Mineself is sort of the dream and different reality of Erebus's reincarnation or inheritor because he too, stopped existing. I was aware of this upon my creation due to my connection with him, but I too was aware of my separated existence and reality. Where he died and I did not."

OOC:Seris is sort of a character from a Theogenesis game, where she is dream version of the child/inheritor of Erebus who had died/reincarnated, so nontraditional separated from normal lore! Hinting at that is her magic and domain which is a twisted/distortion of Darkness. So she pokes at Nox for fun because she knows they are from different realities entirely as of when they had talked and went on adventuring! It is also why you are somewhat familiar/comfortable to her, because naturally Darkness was her original self's domain!

"But, mineself will forgive thy's pompessness by not Devouring thee. Though the universe itself seems to ban me from being able to...oh, nor do I downplay thee, Nox. Especially what you may be capable of. Simply, had one not been there or acted. The outcome would be simple, ghosts or no ghosts. I know it as fact, because we too are now also mortal to an extent. Our hunger and thirst are contributors to that fact."

Walking around casually, Seris continued to speak matter of factly, "This land does indeed exist due to thy effort and part. I only brought up mineself's part. Mainly to tease. Thee already knew my part. Tis why thee makes their current toy, courtesy of our friend here." Seris gestured to the mortals in the golem, "So while thee shows them no love but also no hate. I find it distasteful and not an excuse for the way thee show thy eerie toward them for their upset on thee breaking and taking what little that they have left and hold dear. Especially when it was made under their efforts. Thee simply shows no gratitude or humility but demanded such from them. One such as ourselves, should be divine in nature no? So too should our manors, but you have forgotten yours. Which, equates to thy's pompessness! A stature granted from being a big powerful primordial, whom even gods did not trifle with. Yet, here thee is, as weak and frail as the mortals thy shown one's scorn too. This place exists due to all three of our efforts. So I do not condone thy scorn towards poor Gevenros and Elakeen, mineself demands thee apologize appropriately!"

Seris's tail wiped around playfully as she looked to Nox with dead seriousness. Of course she enjoyed the entire exchange and even her own rant. Regardless of how he rebuttaled or responded, her enjoyment was had and enjoyed the savory treat of her own words and his response. However, Seris brought aloud the very truth of their current state of weakness. Seris had no doubts any mortal could be a deadly threat to the gods now. Nox knew that already to some extent. Seris learned it first hand already.

"I don't need you to remind me of what sorry state we're in. I do the best I can but sometimes I do what needs to be done. And I already told you I broke it to defend myself as much as anything. It wanted more of me than I was willing to give. So instead, I took matters into my own hands. And I'll continue to do so. If I have to cope with being fallen, then I'll at least cope with it on my terms." he said as he sighed.

"And I don't know what you're prattling on about but that wasn't Erebus. It sounds more like a dream than reality. I'd think you were but a dream, if I didn't already see your claws in action."

Nox considered.

"Well I've spent enough time. And don't expect an apology because you'll be waiting a long time. I'm off to go try and save the universe or whatever." he said as he turned and walked the other way, flickering out of sight when he passed the dark side of a column.

Seris's tail continued to wave around playfully, even another smile broke on her face when Nox sounded a hmph. "Ahhh, but it was Erebus. Just not the one you know. Or perhaps possibly it was just separated across time and reality. I hold his blood though, distorted as it is. God's do not dream, so when one does would it not be possible to birth a whole reality or even divines?"

As Nox began to walk away, Seris let out one more comment, "Mineself woll have eternity and so shall these mortal's souls to await thy apology. Doing what you had to do still isn't an excuse to not apologize. One would think you might have scarred the poor mortals."

Mockingly she continued as he dissappeared," There there poor mortals, Neru and Seris will save you from big scary Nox." snickering lightly to herself.

Turning to the golem Seris spoke, "However, do not expect an apology from mineaelf for using thee to get at Nox. I too would like to see what it is thee can do before I take leave, Elakeen."

"Yeah, I won't apologize either! Well, I have done nothing bad though... so I guess that makes sense..."

These words have Neru's seal of approval

Adventure: The Taming of the Grasslands
The face of the new golem containing the intertwined souls was more expressive than their previous crude construct. Its metal brows raised in alarm at Seris' request. "I'm a Shaper, building things takes time, it's not like the tricks Gevenros does where a snap of the fingers does fancy effects. I can certainly build something, it'll just take some time. There were enough materials back in the workshop to complete a project. After that though I'll need a fresh source of materials, iron, copper, glass. That sort of thing." Elakeen explained. "Was there something in particular you two wanted?"

OOC: Things are pretty much wrapped up here. Feel free to converse in the Green Glade to determine what you want to do next.

Nox's self disperses from the grasslands. Broadly speaking - he's always kinda around now that the realm has been tamed and is part of the main realm now.

Seris thought for a moment upon it's request, "Mmm, I have nothing in particular I want. Though also nothing comes to mind since I know not what you are capable of completely. So I would say, surprise me. Yet insure it is useful in some way, it matters not how."

With that Seris waved, deciding to join Neru in leaving for a different quest.
