Re: OOC: For Sea Shanties and Sea Sickness

No word from Faith for a few days so I'll be removing her and bringing on one of the folks from our wait list. Sinceno has been hiring other folks too it will seem!

Hello all,

I will be jumping in in the aforementioned character's stead. From the sound of it I have been hired by the same individual and should be meeting you where you are shortly (Once I'm all approved and what not.)

Just wanted to shout hello and let you know I'm excited to be joining you all on this adventure :D

Playing a crusherlock archaeologist on the search for eternal life.

Mechanically I can move things around the field a bit for now and know a lot about dungeons and ruins and such. Just a good ol fashion blasty boy with a bit of a twist.

Googling it myself, I see that it is not a commonly used term yet and my friend was wrong...

Basically he built out a Warlock patron of the genie, dao specifically for the bludgeoning damage, and took the Crusher feat so he could always move things around whenever he hit them. When he brought it to the table he called it a crusherlock and I just thought that was a thing until you questioned it lol. So this character build emulates his but without all the evil intentions crap he put behind it. Still out for myself but not to hurt folks.

The archaeologist part is just a background that I am now realizing comes from a book not on the approved list. So I may need to adjust that.

Edit: Thats what I get for speed reading through the character creation thread. My bad

Genie patron (Dao) with the Crusher feat and archaeologist... took me a minute to figure the term but it makes sense :D

Yeah, it makes a lot more sense now. I was like, "what level of homebrew malarkey just walked in here!?"

on the archaeologist thing, I mean custom backgrounds are a PHB rule, so you can essentially create it even if Talon won't just allow that background itself.

Though for my games I tend to allow whatever background even if limiting the other books... let people do their character history however is my general rule.

That said... this is Talon's game, so check with them :D

I do homebrew backgrounds all the time. The options in the PHB are nice, but they don't come close to covering all walks of life.

The archeologist background will be fine. I do actually have access to that one via a PDF, but like other folks have mentioned, the background is less a concern than if people applied for the game and wanted to use a feat or spell they'd found from some dark concern of the untested internet.

I'll have to look up what the book suggests for custom backgrounds, I didn't recall that rule from when I browsed through!

I mostly use Beyond these days, so I don't have page #'s but in chapter 4 just before the Acolyte entry it has this:
quote:
Customizing a Background
You might want to tweak some of the features of a background so it better fits your character or the campaign setting. To customize a background, you can replace one feature with any other one, choose any two skills, and choose a total of two tool proficiencies or languages from the sample backgrounds. You can either use the equipment package from your background or spend coin on gear as described in chapter 5. (If you spend coin, you can’t also take the equipment package suggested for your class.) Finally, choose two personality traits, one ideal, one bond, and one flaw. If you can’t find a feature that matches your desired background, work with your DM to create one.

So basically you take a standard background feature/equipment and then customize the skills/tools/languages/personality traits. Or you work with DM to create a custom feature, but I never really find that part necessary personally. One of the published ones almost always works for me, maybe with a skill or tool swap here or there.

Note to self: This is why there should be multiple threats. :P I shudder to think how this is going to go when my combat encounter balancing swings the other direction!

Jaryn, note that Iclos healed some of your wounds in a previous post.

Huh. I could have sworn I marked that down, but my last post before the one you healed me in shows the same damage.

Also, I'm super-tired today and updated my AC to 26 at first instead of the hit points, lol. Jaryn gets harder to hit the more damaged he is! =P

In reply to Iclos Scarcreek (msg # 89):

Yep. It's generally a sign that the game is dead, but it could be the DM getting sick or reacting poorly to a vaccine, so I'll wait a bit longer before I start making the tombstone.

I tend to just shrug. Things happen. Even if the game lies quiescent for a while no reason it can't come back in weeks or months later if/when the DM gets more time.

I'd like to keep playing Naim for sure I know that :D

I've been playing on this site for close to 20 years, and only twice have I seen a game make a significant comeback and not peter out again within a month. It's like a habit that you either stay on top of or it's gone.

Hey there. My job had some recent changes and I'm finding the new responsibilities soaking up most of my mental energies. Not entirely unexpected which is why I mentioned running things as a one shot here. So no one is in suspense I'm going to fold things up here. Thanks for joining me in our brief adventure upon the high seas!
