Local Flavor and Culture

Ezekiel

Culture:
  • The Dyr-Kin have developed a sophisticated collection of martial arts forms which combine their divine magic and martial prowess.
  • The vast majority of the Dyr-Kin are pacifists with only a selected caste of people, the Guardians, being permitted to engage in violence but only in the defense of their homes and their god.
  • Dyr-kin live have a communist theocracy and have no concept of personal property or private enterprise.
  • The Dyr-kin have no formal recognition of family units and engage in communal raising of children and fluid polyamorous relationships.

Cuisine:
  • The Dyr-kin diets consist largely of hearty stews, various meat and vegetable pates, raw fruits and nuts, and simple fermented flat breads.

Flora:
  • The Ironwood tree is a tree which naturally accumulates energies of the metal element, making it incredibly strong although it does not hold an edge well.

Techniques:
  • The Dyr-kin are masters of plant grafting and frequently have their home-trees grow fruits, nuts, and edible flowers as a sustainable food source.
  • Using Houzai divine magic Dyr-kin weaponsmiths perform what is called 'weapon drawing' where metal is leeched from the ground slowly and shaped through will into its final shape.

Malum

Culture:
  • The diamond is a holy shape to the Mortenum for unknown reasons.
  • The Mortenum have diversified the one cultivar of peppers they received from Hoahlim into thirty seven different cultivars, each with its own flavor profile and character. Pepper cultivation is considered a high art and some cultivars are so coveted they are only grown in fortified hothouses.
  • Military officers are known to play an 3-stage, asymmetric war game which involves territory generation, the placement of various military assets, and a turn based combat resolution phase. The asymmetry comes from the catalogs of units types which obey various conventions.
  • Historically the Mortenum have been highly xenophobic and elitist, believing themselves to be superior to other mortals, although this ideology has become less popular in recent years.

Cuisine:
  • The Mortenum love hot, spicy, and numbing foods. It is rare for even their deserts, the few that exist, to not be spicy in some fashion.
  • A rare delicacy is spiced blood. It is made by adding animal blood and numbing spices to gelatin and is often eaten with vinegar based soups or as a topping to meat dishes.

Fauna:
  • Behemoths are massive, lowland herbivores that live in the western province. Their powerful bodies and gentle temperament have made premier beasts of burden although their slow speed makes their utility limited.

Flora:
  • The southernmost portion of the southern province is not actually solid land but the result of the mangrove-like root systems of the marshoaks which have captured sediments and detritus for centuries. Marshoaks are long lived and pale silver flowers and floating seeds once per decade.
  • Weeping Vines are common in the western mountain provinces where they produce a viscous sap to trap insects. This sap can be rendered into a useful adhesive and is one of the major exports of the region. The vines themselves are also edible although mostly used as animal feed.
  • Bellflower is a purple, bell shaped flower that grows in the lowlands of the western province. It is primarily used for its potent medicinal properties, accelerating wound healing and decreasing scar tissue formation, but is also an addictive in behemoth feed due to it supporting their growth.

Material:
  • Hyalundum is an osmium-based mineral that occurs throughout Vexsus. It is largely used as an additive in the rare titan-class of heavy armor and weapons.
  • Crotan is a brittle, pale red mineral that causes mild skin irritation. It is often made into a thick paste which is smeared onto the skin for ceremonies of cultural importance such as weddings, births, and funerals.
  • Mistpearls are pale lustrous orbs that can be harvested from the shores of the northeastern province. When alloyed with iron they produce weapons with strange hues that become partially gaseous, dealing half the damage they inflict as an area effect.
  • Mournstone a lustrous, dark red stone that can be used to forge weapons or armor that inflict and ignore 1 point of penetrating damage. When alloyed with steel it produces darksteel which increases the potency of its effects to 2 points.

Nocker

Culture
  • It is possible among the Knell to barter secrets or knowledge in exchange for goods and services.
  • Knellic artisans mark all of their creations with 'knellmarks'. This allows knell to identify not only the crafter but their master as apprentices adopt a common thematic element from their masters knellmark into their own.
  • Knell society is arranged around a common citizenry population of laborers and seven clades of specialists that were created at the dawn of time.
  • The Knellic language has four conjugations that cover the masculine, feminine, neuter, and neutral with the neutral conjugation reserved for objects, places, and phenomena.

Cuisine:
  • Insect larvae are considered a delicacy for the Knell, especially the spiced and fermented grubs of Tellerus which are considered an extremely rare luxury item.
  • Knell diets subsist largely of mushrooms, tubers, and woody root vegetables which they often make into soups or porridge although with the domestication of the voles and herdbeasts has introduced milk and bone marrow into their diet as well. The Knell, for reasons unknown, are not large meat eaters.
  • The Knell have spent years refining the brewing process of a mushroom wine which they drink with most meals albeit diluted to varying extents depending on the circumstances and the age of the drinker. Elders and children drink very dilute wine.

Flora:
  • Due to Char's current climate plant-life is exceptionally rare. However a large variety of edible, medicinal, and poisonous mosses and lichens grow in the shallow pools that are scattered around the northern edge of the Blast Crater.
  • Char is dominated by a near ubiquitous woody fungus whose fibrous myceli are used for everything from textiles to fuel to animal feed.
  • There are over 58 different varieties of mushrooms that have been identified within the caverns that the Knell call home.

Fauna:
  • Hogworms are large worm-like creatures that serve as a rare source of 'meat' although the Knell do not often partake of it. Instead they are prefer to boil and pickle their innards.
  • Armorpedes are massive carnivorous centipedes whose chitinous exoskeletons are reinforced by striations of iron that leech from stone using digestive acids. While potentially hazardous they have been domesticated into versatile mounts which can scale the ever present walls and ceilings of the caverns while laden with equipment or riders.
  • Knellic warriors frequently use specially breed goblin-hounds as mounts due to their diminutive size making travel through often rough terrain difficult. This has made them unparalleled mounted combatants.
  • Jewelbettles are a foreign import into Char from the Land. These soft-shelled beetles seed minerals or deposit metals into their exoskeletons for protection and do the same for their mounds. This leds to them appearing as living gemstones or gilded insects, should precious items be present.

Material:
  • Charan Crystal is a bismuth-like metallic crystal that passively absorbs elemental darkness. When processed in a secret manner it yields shadesteel which has unusual properties in both the material and shadow planes. Most notable of these is its ability to withstand any runic sequence indefinitely.
