Prologue: The Lost City of Gaxmoor
Several weeks ago, merchant caravans and traveling pilgrims began disappearing on the high road between Westmark and its allies to the east. Soon after, reports of monsters and bandits lurking about came in from outlying farms and border patrols. Next, a group of rangers returned to tell of the appearance of a strange rock mesa where that had previously only been a river valley. By their account, a great, seemingly devastated city with an odd, disquieting look stood atop the mesa.

Massive outer walls, with higher inner walls beyond, surround the city. Its towers, gates, and buildings were all of an unfamiliar, archaic style. The rangers reported hearing various eerie sounds throughout the night, sounds that echoes throughout the city walls during the night--moans, screams, and an eerie, almost speech-like howling--frightened even the most intrepid scouts.

As the sun's early rays crested the hills, the whole group dared move closer to obtain a better look at the strange city. A handful rode into the city, but those that passed through its gates did not return. Those who remained safely outside heard nothing, and waited for hours. Growing fearful with the coming of night, they eventually left. The rangers returned to the Margrave with their fantastic tale.

The Margrave asked for the counsel of sages, scholar-priests, and wizards to unravel the mystery. None of these savants knew what this strange city was, or how it came to be here it was, nor what its sudden appearance could mean. Priests praying and communing for knowledge from their deties received only vague and cryptic answers. Wizards cast spells of lore and legend, and likewise garnered only slight hints, such as:

"It is the city of Journey's End."

"What was forgotten has returned, and what was loved, is now hated."

"The secrets of the City of Journeys are now in the hands of the malevolent."

Such cryptic answers are all the wise could learn. As the divinations and auguries were cast, and as scholars pored over ancient texts in search of answers, news of terrible events came to town. Farms and steadings along the eastern border in the vicinity of the strange city were found abandoned. Evidence of a terrible slaughter was discovered. Monstrous things have been seen roaming the hills. The native hillmen, gnomes, and others dwelling there have disappeared.

The wise and powerful now call upon their allies, vassals, and all brave adventurers to lend a hand. You are among those answering the call for help. Many stalwart, experienced adventurers like you have already entered the mysterious city. But none that entered this city have returned...

Your mission will certainly be long and intense, and require cunning, caution, and courage. Those who preceded you were organized and well-armed, and still failed to return! Caution may win where bull-headed might has failed, or so those who would succeed in this quest hope. Are you ready for high adventure, lost magic treasures, and devious tricks and traps?

Welcome to The Lost City of Gaxmoor!

"He's not ready."

"Were we?"

"This is different.  They've returned."

"Our life is to serve, no matter the peril."

"But he's..."

"We've done our best.  It's up to him now."

Prologue: The Lost City of Gaxmoor
The sudden appearance of the strange ancient city has understandably caused quite the stir in the small villages and holdings along the western frontier. Perhaps none moreso than the village of Westmark, as is it the closest to the city and its outlying farmsteads have already seen evidence of unusual activity in the area. There have been numerous reportings of monstrous bands of humanoids moving through the area, all tracks headed toward the ancient city that has thus far, confounded the wisest and most learned sages and scholars of the land.

Not one to stand by idly, the local baron sent a detachment of soldiers to investigate about a month ago, but they never returned. The baron has now sent out a call for brave adventurers to investigate the disturbances reported in the vicinity of the mysterious city. To further entice would-be explorers, the baron has offered a substantial reward of 200 gold pieces for any information about the detachment's fate and, more specifically, word of what lies beyond the city's walls.

Six adventurers answered the baron's call. These included a young human woman who hardly looks the part of a seasoned adventurer, a burly man carrying a huge sword, an aged elf in well-worn but serviceable armor, a towering brute of a half-orc, a human male who looks like a simple laborer, and a human male wearing the holy symbol of Avandra.

This motley crew has come together at the local inn. Surely they are eager to begin their adventuring career and more to the point, to make a name for themselves in these lands while earning fame, fortune and glory!

OOC: Let's do very brief in-character introductions and then we will whisk off directly into the action!

"Jaim," the man with the thick braids said by way of a brief introduction.  He wore sturdy clothing, but no sign of any weapons or armor.  Only a backpack slung over one shoulder.  He looked to be in his early thirties.

"I have rope."

Imitating Jaim's laconic introduction, the old elf says quietly, "Eradil at your service. I have an ax."

The young woman looks apprehensive as she eyes the other members of this fledgling band.  "I'm Abigail . . . Abby, if you please.  I have . . .

She pauses, thinking about how to finish the sentence.

"Rope," she says.  Then, hastily adds. "And torches! I have torches too . . . "

Her voice trails off and she has an unhappy look on her face.

Prologue: The Lost City of Gaxmoor
A hulking half-orc makes his way near the others, clanking as the bent slab of metal tied to his leg and the chain holding his pants up fail to get along. He takes the hammer off his back and slams it on the table, more out of carelessness than malicious intent, and pulls up a chair.

"Jag... one minute now... *BWATCH* o..." The hot wave of the belch wafts over anyone unfortunate enough to be too close. "This where we get the gold, ya?"

Prologue: The Lost City of Gaxmoor
The burly bearded man with the long hair and the much longer sword strapped across his back drains his fourth mug of ale and slams the vessel down on the table before wiping the froth from his beard with the back of his hand.

"Andriel the Hammer, I'm hight," he growls jovially. "I be well ready to wet my blade in the blood of whoever stands in our path. It'll be about time!"

He calls for another ale, apparently feeling he isn't yet drunk enough for the imminent journey. Andriel seems to have nothing besides the clothes he wears, the sword on his back, and a round wooden shield leaning against the table.

Jaim wondered if Jago and Andriel wouldn't mind swapping weapons.  The newcomer's name was just confusing.  Perhaps he meant to challenge Jago for the hammer and this was his declaration of purpose?

Prologue: The Lost City of Gaxmoor
The motley crew of neophyte adventurers spend several hours in the tavern. There, they share fellowship over a few rounds of their favorite ale, mead or wine, whatever the case may be. This scene has played out in taphouses all across the Known World, indeed, across many planes of existence, and predictably culminates with new alliances being forged. So it is here too.

Thus begins the adventures of Abigal, Andriel, Eradil, Jago, Jaim and Rurik. May the Gods and Goddesses look upon them with favor as they set out in search of The Lost City of Gaxmoor!
