Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

OOC: Some things to clarify-

I think you mean the goblin, not the kobold. The kobold is very much dead, as Claire cut its head off.

You may refer to the map in post #262 for a layout of the room Ethgar is in. The wizard's stuff is in an adjacent room, the current one just contains a lot of cages and other items for prisoners - barrels of drugged food/water, spare manacles/chains...etc.

Ethgar could you color your text speech? I believe you chose blue.

U'lins healing magic washes over the comatose creature, but the goblin does not stir. Drool steadily leaks out from his mouth as he slumps against the side of the cage.

Claire may attempt an Animal Handling check to calm the animals. Feel free to use spells or other items in your attempt.

I'm fine with the party searching the basement more, then moving upstairs after. As with my post to Zaiya, anyone searching or examining stuff may make Perception and Investigation checks. Anything Arcane like the circle or notes will require an additional Arcana or Alchemist's tools check. Indicate what you are looking for. I'll summarize accordingly.

Do note that the big angry table is still big and angry. Going too near it might be dangerous.

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

Ethgar allowed the firbolg's hand to calm him. It didn't seem like he needed much convincing. Nor was he in any condition to go picking fights with furniture that could fight back. He'd shattered several of the crates containing food and water but made no progress with the manacles which had become the primary outlet for his anger as soon as he'd noticed them.

At last, panting, he looked up at U'lin. "Who are you, that you know so much of this bastard and his doings?"

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

As Claire had expected, the goblin's ailment was more than meets the eye. She had just about finished maneuvering the still-catatonic goblin into a more comfortable position where he would not choke on his own tongue, when Ethgar's outburst caused her to flinch. Thankfully, U'lin had the matter easily in hand, prompting a sigh of relief. The last thing they needed was to be trapped in a small chamber with a hostile barbarian.

"We ought to open the way for the Lord Protector's guards as soon as we can, if this fellow's to get the care he needs to survive." The young woman's concern for the poor goblin caught herself by surprise - until the party had met Tetri, she had little in the way of sympathy for the goblinoid race, not least due to the Nightstone raid.

As Claire approached the caged animals, she mumbled inaudibly a litany of comprehension to her goddess, before speaking as slowly and soothingly to them.

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

Ethgar's measured approach to his outburst caught Moira's attention and she instinctively braced against its fury as he railed about the room.  She'd seen that sort of behavior before... hells, she'd done it herself.  The Halfling made sure to give him a wide berth until his rampage ran its course, both by way of his exhaustion catching up to him and U'lin's timely intervention.

Claire:
"We ought to open the way for the Lord Protector's guards as soon as we can, if this fellow's to get the care he needs to survive."

"Ain't so certain we're done yet.  Some of th'stuff in here; th'bear and its cage, that mad table?  They're too big t'have come down th'stairwell, and I doubt Hyuth dragged all this here through his own front door in th'middle of town in th'first place." Moira cast a gaze about the gruesome chamber to skim the walls with a passing glance.  "Suppose he might've used magic t'just put 'em all in his pocket or some nonsense.  But knowin' his specialty, havin' a private warehouse nearby, and there bein' a sewer system he managed under th'whole of Triboar?  I wouldn't be a mite surprised if there was a false wall leadin' into th'sewers down here."

Claire's use of that strange incantation of hers was a familiar one by that point, given how often she used it to chatter with the horses.  Moira canted her head to listen and, once the spell was completed, spoke again.  "See if any of th'critters know how they got down here, yea?  Same of y'self, Mister Ethgar.  D'ya remember anythin' of how y'came t'be here?"

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

"Oh, well whom I am is a broad question, but you asked whom I am such that I know about the horrible wretch of this tower?  A much narrower, but more consideration-requiring question," the tall firbolg rambled in thought, before holding up a finger to pause the discussion.

"One moment.   U'lin cast his voice over to reach where Claire was working.  "It is okay to speak with her.  She is a caring person, and helped dispatch the evils harming good creatures of this place," he added, helpfully, trying to assist her efforts.

He then turned back to the barbarian at hand.

"Let me see.  We defeated the wizard and his draconic magical familiar - the one turning other living folk into undead stone creatures.. terrible that.  We fought him because we were assisting the town at the Protector's request.  We were here speaking with the Protector because we have been seeking to stop the giants' uprising, and were passing through, saw the orc army attacking and inside the walls, dispatched several orcs and ogres and their bird mounts, and leant our aid to the town.  We are trying to stop the giants because of the havoc they are causing, rising up, reckless and violent, and uncontrolled as they used to be.  Your kin and we had a bit of discussion about them joining in battle against the ancient enemy... hmm.. that isn't about why we were here - I do hope that digression wasn't overly bothersome. Moira says that I tend to ramble, but really it is simply there is so much to learn and say that how can one keep all the nuts in the proper basket?   Did what I say make sense to you?

"Oh!  Yes.  It does tie in, see, for the Uthgardt people were speaking of the battle against the Ancient enemy, rising together in a great hunt because of the giants rampaging, which is because the Hill giants are running amok, the Stones reshaping the world to their crafting contests, the Fire Giants trying to recreate a world-destroying relic weapon of the ancient battles they had with the dragons.

"Hmm.  Did you also have the vision of draconic eyes and evil just a few moments before our arrival?  We had thought that tied to what was here.. but now I wonder if it was something broader as well, perhaps tied to the ancient Giant-Dragon wars?"

OOC: hope that provides advantage for you Claire!  Beastspeak in action, even if I cannot understand them back like you :)

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

The already-exhausted barbarian's eyes began to glaze over as U'lin went on about orcs and ogres and giants and who knew what else, lighting up with interest only at the mention of turning living flesh to stone. By the time the firbolg reached the end of his soliloquy, Ethgar had lost the thread of it. He shook his head weakly in answer to the question.

"Eyes? No," he said. "But... visions... you said you saw me? Strike a... clawed thing?"

With considerable effort, he forced himself back to his feet and shuffled into the next room. From his awkward, fumbling gait, it was plain to see he was not about to fly into another destructive rage. "Have you found anything out here," he asked the others, "looks like it might belong to me?"

An almost cacaphonic mix of panicking animal growls and voices hits Claire as she completes her spell.

"hurts...pain..."
"...hungry! Hungry!"
"Touched us. Was us...not us?"
"Cantfly!Nowings!Cantfly!Nowings!"

Now that Ethgar is free, he can look around himself. The tower basement is a mess, and the stench of blood and fear remains strong. Still, there are a few areas the party has not looked:

-the pile of notes on Hyuth's desk, next to the operation table (that Ethgar is intimately familiar with)
-the pile of discarded trash next to the animated table
-the animated table itself

There's also the display cases upstairs, if the group is inclined to go there.

U'lin looked over to Zaiya, then gathered up the papers.  "Claire, you care to check that ingredients shelf?  I saw many good mid-level ingredients for healing potions and salves there.

"Zaiya, we need you to examine those orbs and magical items upstairs.  Can you tend that?

"I'll read through these papers, see if there is anything of use.  Papers that look more magically-needed reading, will go to Zaiya.  The stuff about defences and dirty dealing to Moira.  Anything that can help the animals to Claire.

"Hey - Ethgar.  I didn't see much around or upstairs that looked like warrior gear.  There could be a hidden storage room, I suppose.  Otherwise, that pile over there is your best chance - otherwise the mage likely traded or disposed of it somehow.  If I go to one side, draw the table's attention, you should be able to drag the pile to one side, so we can go through it without having our head pounded into pieces, hmmm?"

OOC: help draw the table's attention for Ethgar to shovel/pull the pile to safety.
Then go through the papers, distribute as

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

While U'lin set about managing the situation, Moira lingered with Ethgar and offered him a sympathetic shrug.  "Y'get used t'th'chatter.  Honestly, he's much better on it than he's been in days past." she observed.  U'lin's remark of them having not seen much in the way of equipment got a nod of agreement.  "Ain't had much a chance t'really dig into things 'round here yet though, but we ain't found anythin' of yours as far as we know.  Don't fret none; we'll get y'sorted."

U'lin:
"If I go to one side, draw the table's attention, you should be able to drag the pile to one side, so we can go through it without having our head pounded into pieces, hmmm?"

To that, the Halfling shuffled about in her bag of supplies for a moment before she withdrew a grappling hook and a bolt of hempen rope.  "Here, if y'plan on tryin' t'corral that daft thing, y'can use this t'hook it and keep it pulled t'one side." The very notion was ridiculous, but it might at least make for a good story later on...

"Right." Ethgar sounded less than convinced concerning the firbolg's current reticence. "Thanks."

Eager to have his weapons back, however, he did not press the issue. Rather, he took U'lin and Moira's very good advice and went to search the trash near the animated table. He waited with obvious impatience for the firbolg to restrain it but remained ready to defend himself should it make any sudden moves.

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

It didn't take Chauntea's blessing to guess what the distressed cries meant, and Claire looked hardly surprised as the voices began shading into intelligibility. [Language unknown: "Wh, icabe ivos entwashis..."] she cooed softly to the clearly abused animals.

It didn't seem like this was a situation where words would calm them much, so the young woman opened up her pack, pulling out the last of the ham and nuts that she had left. Doling it out to the animals, Claire gave the lion's share of the more numerous nuts to the omnivorous bear. What little ham she had was divided between the wolf and eagle, whose natural appetites would clearly not accept the nuts.

[Language unknown: "Vorri liisla ardherven, ivany le een T lario,"] she said apologetically.

Give 7 portions of nuts [0 left] to the bear.
Give 1 portion of ham to the wolf.
Give 1 portion of ham to the eagle. [0 ham left]

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

As U'lin moves to grapple the table, the massive thing slams itself into the firbolg! However, between the chains and U'lins thick armor, the strike barely leaves a scratch on the firbolg's body.

U'lin, give me an Athletics check, opposed by the table's roll of 21 to grapple it while Ethgar searchs. You may make this check at advantage with the aid of the Grappling Hook.

Ethgar, give me a Perception or Investigation check as you attempt to dig through the pile of totally-not-dangerous junk :P

Zaiya, digging through the papers reveals...a disturbing form of research. Blearily, you recall Hyuth's last entry in his study - why create what already exists?

Thus the mage turned to the field of necromancy and transmutation. Why create indeed? Why not just...transform something into a suitable servant? Or better yet, transfer the qualities needed for animus, without all the...useless extraneous parts.

The notes cover, in clinical detail, various experiments in transmuting the body and later, the soul of a creature into that of a useful servant. It draws knowledge from his past research on gargoyles, the dragon statue and a few other texts you're pretty sure would be banned in most orthodox libraries. What happens when 30% of a creature is replaced with animated stone? What about 60%? Which organs determine a creature, is it merely the brain? The heart?

How much of a soul is really needed anyway?

Subject G-07 seems unusually hostile as a table, despite its previous docility as a goblin. Perhaps not enough was transferred? Or too much?

Idlly, Zaiya notices some entries regarding a "captured barbarian" and "the second of two humanoid specimens". The notes declare it a "partial success" with "more work needed to mitigate the drawbacks".

The latest few entries describe a "radical, unified procedure" that will take a "significant amount of time" to "extract the soul through suffering". "Careful monitoring" was necessary.

This entry was dated three days ago. Right before the Fire Giant attack.

As Claire gently reaches out to feed the animals, a slow sense of calm gradually flits over the group. The creatures are still hostile- tense, untrusting, flinching away from the healer when she approaches. But the offering of food, the soft voice, the smell of fresh earth (strange, despite there being no soil nearby) -all so different from the image of their captor- wins them over.

The bear ponderous crunches down on the nuts, while the hawk snaps up bits of ham, screeching for more. The wolf however, is still shivering, and Claire understands its soft whines of panic;

[Language unknown: "ulac'unpric, ieomeinounat, si omven k ei, ss hisiec, ticla pre ncurunrireee not om welo olic..."]

Moira, any actions to help anyone?

Otherwise, congratulations on clearing Hyuth's Tower!

I will summarize the searching of the remaining locations, including any items you find. Without time pressure I would say that disabling the remaining wards and defenses is an inevitability. The only question then is what you guys choose to keep :)

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

"What a piece of work..."  Zaiya would mutter more than once as she went through the notes.  "At every level he's a scumbag.  'Why create what already exists' he says.  The whole point of wizardry is to create what you want, why lessen yourself with something as petty as corrupting what's already in the world when you could be making wonders.  Cheapskate, trash."

Which didn't mean there was nothing that could be learned from this--but there were an awful lot of notes that were going right into the fire after she was done assessing them.

The last thing she wanted was someone else getting their hands on it and getting ideas

OOC: Zaiya's going to spend her time alternately throwing Identifies out and sifting through the books and all other mad magic science that's going on in here, Arcana/Investigation checks, like she's good at.

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

Immediate actions: Moira will Assist either U'lin or Ethgar; whichever one of them wants a hand with their skill check.

Further actions following that: assuming Zaiya explains fully what Hyuth's notes entail and what went down with his experiments, Moira will spend a while expressing her desire to have kicked his corpse more when she had the chance.  Further, she'll express a desire to see the Goblin returned to his original state, but all she can do is ask and hope since she's got absolutely no ability to help in that process whatsoever.  If it's even possible.

As for the Tower as a whole: if it's properly locked down as of now, Moira will want to go through room to room gathering all the obviously valuable items into one spot.  Preferably on the ground floor for anything that can be readily carried, while anything that can't easily be taken downstairs should just be put to one side of its room.

Following that, she'll do a deep sweep of every room using her "Treasure Sense" Piety ability to try and ferret out any hidden goodies.  The ability has a range of 60', lasts for 1 minute per use, and Moira can currently use it 4 times; once for each level of the Tower.  Hopefully it'll have a higher chance of success between having a range that can sweep the entirety of a level per activation and by moving any mundane/obvious valuables away to prevent anything getting obscured.

Also, Moira is absolutely going to raid the kitchen for pretty much everything in there once Zaiya can confirm that enchanted wine chest thing isn't going to come alive and attack her.

He tried to hide it, but it was plain to see the barbarian was struggling even to sift through the pile of junk by the twitching table. He kicked at it listlessly, several times giving up when he proved unable to move an especially large piece. His frustration was palpable, though he did seem to relax along with the animals when Claire spoke to them.

Before making a thorough search of the pile, he allowed himself to be distracted by the purple-haired demonspawn going through the wizard's papers. He nodded along with her sentiments but continued to eye her suspiciously. "Whaddya want with those?" he demanded of her. Clearly, Ethgar was accustomed to using his size to intimidate those smaller than himself, though in his weakened state he did not actually present as much of a threat.

Ethgar Longarm rolled 11 using 1d20+2.  investigation.

Moira, I forgot to roll with advantage, but I could certainly use the help if you'd care to take pity on poor Ethgar, who's too weak to even do a proper search. Maybe DM will either let me reroll or let you roll your own check? Honestly, Ethgar failing at it by himself works pretty well narratively.

Go ahead and roll with Advantage, Ethgar.  Your Investigation skill is better than Moira's anyway.  ^^;

"Once I figure out which ones are poison, Imma burn them"  Zaiya answered, not impressed by his posturing in the slightest.  "Most of this is foul garbage not fit to be recording--in theory there might be some neat insights on Transmutation and Conjuration here that aren't dependent on atrocities...  But nope, most of this is probably going right on the burn pile."

She glanced back and gave a toothy grin.  "Most people don't believe in book burning, they call it bad luck.  I for one though feel that burning the right books can do a lot of good when most of it is about maniacal rants and abuse of the Weave for petty amusement"

This is how it is among my people. Men like me... like I was... sing the histories of our people. The things that matter, that make us who we are. None of this nonsense about trsnsmujaburation.

But in the end, none of it matters. People do what strong men tell them to do, nothing more. The strong men say what the songs are and what they mean. Bastards don't need books to write their lies in men's minds.

As Ethgar tries to search the pile, the enraged table lunges at the Uthgardt warrior- U'lins chains and hooks barely able to keep it back. The first two struggles come short, but the last smacks the skald right in the shoulder, sending him sprawling into the pile itself (Ethgar takes 16 points of bludgeoning damage). A loud crash echoes through the basement.

Fortunately, in knocking over the top part of the pile, Ethgar revealed several items- including his own gear, buried under piles of discarded...stone? Is that an arm? Blearily, Ethgar realises that the majority of the pile is actually the discarded remains of Hyuth's previous experiments, including the half-orc he had been locked in here with, all those days(?) ago. (Investigation 11 Ethgar, you find all your usual gear, but no additional items of use in the pile)

Furthermore, the bard feels a strange tingling session running up his arm- some of the stone cut him, and it seems that the pile contained more than just latent magics...

As Claire carries the comatose goblin out into the main area, the chained table seems to go into an absolute frenzy. It tubs frentically at its chains, straining at the metal so much that Claire can hear the splintering of wood. At the same time, the heartbeat of the goblin in her arms spikes, as though the creature had just performed some heavy exercise.

The shelf containing herbs and medicines appears to have been cleared by the firbolg's rather thorough search. If there was additional value to be found, perhaps U'lin could have been slightly more gentle with a few of the more volatile mixtures (OOC: 210gp is nearly the maximum, any higher comes down to how you handled the ingredients, which in U'lins case was 'good but not professional herbalist' so a bit of value was lost)

The remaining animals can certainly be released. But looking at them in the better lighting of the "operation room", Claire realizes that they are all horribly disfigured from Hyuth's experiments.

The hawk's wings are made of stone.

The wolf has half its face and jaw turned to some strange, flexible green crystal. Its left leg is made of marble and does not move. It is also terrified of the kobold's corpse, barking and lashing out at any attempts to carry it that bring it anywhere near the red spell circle. [Language unknown: "Viravebutwhi. Unwhek. Vor ilof. San centas. Ainderall. Mierha t ssoer out. Itmail m thble cass laund. Casaunno. Venlarntiati!"]

The bear seems normal at first, until Claire realizes that its entire underbelly (and possibly most of its internal organs) have been converted to stone. A careful examination and questioning reveals it does not have long to live, as the organs are largely non-functional.

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

Even with the little..."accident", no further incident arises. As the group exits from the ground floor, they are met by a glossy-black raven perched on the displaced mantlepiece. Seeing Moira, the bird opens its mouth- and speaks with the voice of a tired, scholarly man;

"...whatever you just did, it seems to have ended the threat. My subordinate has confirmed with one of the few auguries we have left that Triboar's survival is 'weal' at hand. Hahaha! Ha-" the familiar somehow makes an embaressed cough, "in any case, you may take your time to deward the rest of the tower. Once done, Lord Protector Shendrel will send in a platoon to secure the area. You are entitled to any and all items, magical or otherwise, in Hyuth's stash as spoils of war. Though...the Lord Protector asks you leave his notes on the town defenses, as well as any intact constructs to the city."

Sweeping through the rest of the tower, Moira and Zaiya (with the help of Ethgar, who seems to have some knowledge of Hyuth's capabilities) carefully disable the remaining defenses. The ground floor still had a few nasty wards here and there- especially on the display cases themselves, but without the pressure of time the arcanist is eventually able to disable them. With U'lin and Claire's help, the party is eventually able to consolidate the wealth and magic of Hyuth's estate onto the ground floor.

L O O T (also accounting for Moira's treasure sense):

Top Floor:
-300gp of magical scribing reagents (150gp if sold)
-Healing Potion x2
-multiple documents on Hyuth's research (stone strengthen, town defenses)
-Animated Armor x1 (undamaged)
-Alchemy Lab (entire setup is ~150gp but not very portable)

2nd Floor:
-Silver Placards (doors) worth 5gp each (2gp of raw silver)
-Broken Dog Statue pieces
-Fist-sized ruby worth ~500gp
-Hyuths notes and letters showing correspondence with various shady factions
-Map of the Triboar region, focused on leylines
-Several shelves of books on Geography, Geology, Transmutation and the Arcane (worth ~400gp if brought to the right buyer, 200gp otherwise)
-Multiple trophies/trinkets worth a total of 50gp
-One trophy that seems to be a piece of heavily varnished wood carved in the shape of a horn that is making Moira's treasure sense go crazy (??? worth, appears very faintly magical to detect magic)
-Strange kobold statue made of glass (Magic, aura of moderate divination)
-Floating Quill and Inkwell (Common Magic Item, aura of weak transmutation + divination)
-Spell Circle made of cast silver (appears to be a focus for divination spells and welded to the floor)
-Dupari rug, furniture and clothing worth ~500gp. Most of that amount is the carpet.
-Hyuth's Spellbook (will list details in next post)
-Greater Healing Potion x2

Ground Floor: Dining Area
-Magical Piano (Common magic item) - the make of the piano means its worth at least 200gp
-Expensive Chandeliers, glass table and decorations in the dining room (~200gp)
-Massive High-quality Dupari Carpet (Yellow) worth ~600gp (would have been worth a lot more if it was not second handed and had been treated better)
-Elven Scimitars (Fake) - they seem to have been enchanted with an animation spell tied to vandalism of the room.

Ground Floor: Kitchen
-Magical Wine Chest that keeps things inside it cool (big enough to store 6 bottles of wine)
-6 bottles of wine on a portable wine-rack.
--4 are cheap brands worth 10gp each.
--1 is a fake bottle of Dragondew, an expensive Cormyrian wine that should be worth 200gp if it were real.
--The last bottle is rather small (250ml) dark-blue glass bottle of Mulhorandan Lion-Wine, a very rare vintage that is almost impossible to get outside of Mulhorand. It is worth approximately 500gp for the bottle of this size, potentially more to select markets.
-3 inactive sending stones (their other pairings appear to be lost). Hyuth apparently used these to order food from the local taverns.
-Approximately 100gp of rare herbs and spices, many still unused in their jars.
-A massive, heavy magical kitchen stove. Price is ??? because only a very select cliente would want it.

Ground Floor: Trophy Room
-Waterdhavian rugs worth 30gp each
-Several antique armor pieces, tools and trinkets dating back to the time of the Anauroch empire, mixed with 1-2 pieces of Imaskari design. Literally priceless in both senses of the word - only specific collectors or historians would want these.
-Animated Armors x2 (working, apparently inactive with the wards disabled)
-Multiple staves of increasingly ludicrous design. Most are just cheap props (worth no more than 1gp).
-A Staff of Dancing Lights (requires attunement, at-will Dancing Lights).
-A Broken Staff (???) that is now a set of fragmented, violet glass-like pieces- Zaiya and Ethgar can tell, because despite its clear age (centuries) it still holds a fragment of powers. Its just...in pieces now. (Arcana check)

-Three Orbs (require Identify, all magical):
--An orb brilliant green crystal and patterned with sun-like iconography in gold filigree.
--An orb of polished, reddish metal engraved with images of scales and claws.
--An orb of frosted glass that seems to move and shimmer in the soft light of the living room.

-various paintings and taspetries worth a total of 400gp to the right collector (or 300gp to a merchant)

Basement
-A large urn filled with a clear odorless liquid. A check by Claire reveals it to be a variant of Drow Venom. Instead of knocking the target unconscious, it puts them in an exhausted stupor. The urn is almost empty (3 doses left)
-Various alchemical reagents, useful for crafting potions/alchemy worth 210gp (105gp if sold)
-Multiple texts on Hyuth's blasphemous research that would be worth ~50gp if you strip all the taboo parts. Ten times the amount (500gp) if sold on the black market to less ethically concerned wizards.
-A Scroll of Flesh to Stone (DC 15)

-Several partially petrified animals
-One very angry table

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

The table got away from U'lin, sending Ethgar reeling. Dehydrated and disoriented, the barbarian lost his balance and crashed into the pile of junk. It was a pathetic sight, but he waved off any assistance and did eventually drag himself to his feet.

When he did so, an axe dangled limply from his right arm, which was bleeding from a fresh furniture wound. Clearly he could not lift the weapon, but just holding it seemed to give him strength.

He looked to the wound on his arm, which was beginning to blacken in disturbing and decidedly unnatural fashion. Then he laughed. "No more, old man. You are dead now, and I still live. Despite everything you have done, I still live, and you are dead." He laughed again, louder this time, and as he did so the wound on his shoulder twitched as if fighting back against the blight. He kept laughing as the blackness receded until it was once again nothing more than a naked, bloody cut.

Ethgar looked down at the remains of his fellow prisoner without sympathy or sadness. He gathered the rest of his things from his pile, including a large shield decorated with antlers and bearing the stylized head of an elk in its center in bone-white paint and a delicate wooden instrument resembling a tiny harp that also hangs from his belt. This he tested and seemed pleased by the sound it produced.

Finally, he retrieved an amulet fashioned from a single piece of bone that he been somehow bent into a knot. Despite the material, the style was not reminiscent of the Uthgardt tribes, and the smooth, curved, flawless piece of jewelry looked out of place on his otherwise rugged and scarred body.

With one last look at the orc, he informed the others, "I have what I had need."

Ethgar Longarm rolled 21 using 1d20+1.  Wis save.

Hope you don't mind my taking some liberties on a crit!
