Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

Those strange markings along the wine chest made Moira very curious about what might be inside, but she wasn't about to go poking at clearly arcane jargon without Zaiya around to tell her whether or not it was safe first.  With the kitchen clear, Moira returned to the main room with the others just in time for that strange vision to hit the lot of them.  She recoiled back in momentary pain but whisked her swords out on reflex, immediately set into a tense stance for danger... but it was just a vision and nothing more, for the moment.

Claire:
"Great Mother...did you all feel that too?"

"Y'don't think that's somethin' t'do with what th'diviner was talkin' 'bout earlier?  Th'trouble that'd come if we didn't figure th'tower first?" the Halfling warily asked as she shook her head to try and get rid of the lingering sting.  She was right back on alert when U'lin accidentally brushed into the orb on the mantle place though, which seemed to trigger some kind of... well, frankly, she wasn't sure what to call it.  "What is that, some kinda magical mechanism or somethin'?  Don't tell me that's what th'flower bit was referrin' to..."

Just to verify, DM; is that symbol in the center of the wheel a flame or a flower bud?

OOC: this isn't helpful, but it could be both...?

As a hint, I'll suggest rereading the previous 2 description posts of the living room.

"Oh...  OHHHHHH"  Zaiya exclaims, pointing her finger at the design.

"That's got to be it!  What the clue was referring to!  Try lining up the purple color in the inner ring with the white color in the outer one under the big pointer thingy!  It's a purple--well, violet--flower that blooms in winter!  That's probably the missing combination there!"

She pauses, then looks to the orbs.

"It's either that, or we need to add that in with the combination with those other orbs, using this to fill in the blank?"

Moira could only shrug at the suggestion; she certainly had no better ideas and wasn't qualified to go poking at magical things through sheer trial and error.  Though while she didn't raise any objection, she did take several steps backward away from the fireplace.

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

Moira was primed to take a backflip into the other room just in case but, as the illusory message appeared rather than a disastrous explosion or some other wild reaction, she calmed just a little bit.

"Sequence?  So it's like a combination lock?  Lemme see..." she scratched under her chin in thought as she stared up at the variety of colors.  "Hm... if white's supposed t'be Winter, then that'd make green as Spring.  We don't got many shots at this, so lemme give a go and see if a hunch follows."

Unless anyone has any suggestions, Moira will give the wheel a spin in the following order;

Outer Wheel - Inner Wheel
Green  - Red
Yellow - Purple
Orange - Blue
White  - Green

I'm not certain if the center is supposed to be a button or part of the combination attempt but, if it is, Moira would finish by pressing it.

-EDIT-

There's OOC chatter about this, so this action is PENDING.  Assume the party is all chatting and idea-bashing back and forth as we are in the OOC.

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

Taking a closer look at the paintings, Moira and U'lin realize that the level of detail in each is surprisingly high. Each blade of grass, each flower and insect has been carefully rendered in oils. The brass dragons scales almost glisten as it frolics in the meadow.

Each painting shows a different scene:

Spring: A brass dragon chases sparrows amidst a vibrant meadow, pale green grass dotted with hues of white, blue and yellow flowers.

Summer: A brass dragon snoozes lazily as the sunset paints the verdant meadow a golden yellow. A small brown rabbit peers curiously at the sleeping dragon's snout.

Autumn: Scarlet and orange leaves cover the resting fields. In the center of the meadow a brass dragon blows bluish flames into a smoking firepit, over which hangs an enormous roast boar.

Winter: The scaly head of a brass dragon peeks out of its makeshift burrow. It sniffs curiously at the few violet flowers peeking out of the snow-covered meadow.

Perception 30:

U'lin recognizes the violet flowers as the Crotus that Zaiya spoke of. Collaborating it with the other paintings, the firbolg notes that the flowers are depicted consistently in the other frames as well- wilted brown in spring, sprouting in summer, verdant in autumn and blooming brilliant purple in winter.

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

With some further discussion and exploration about the finer details of the room, Moira felt about as confident as she could with the solution the group had puzzled out.  Which was, to say, barely at all.  She didn't honestly trust that the whole thing wasn't some kind of elaborate trap designed to trick someone into blowing themselves up thinking they were clever.  But, of the lot of them, she was the most likely to be able to dive out of the way of some kind of blast.

"Alright, lessee... y'lot stand back a ways, just in case." the Halfling grimaced as she hopped up to cling to the side of the mantle so she could reach the illusory wheel.

Outer Wheel  -  Inner Wheel
Light Green  -  Red
Yellow       -  Blue
Orange       -  Dark Green
White        -  Purple

With the center pressed at the end, if it does appear to be some sort of button.  Honestly not clear if it's part of the mechanism or just some kind of visual indicator.

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

As Moira finishes entering the sequence and pressing the central button, the entire color wheel swirls out of existence. The rainbow orb flares brightly for moment, then dims.

With a faint grinding noise, the fireplace slides open. Behind it, segments of magically-wrought stone slowly slide out of the way as well, the entire stairwell rotating on its central axis to reveal another set of steps that lead down.

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

As soon as the mantle began to shift Moira kicked off it in a deft spring backward and landed in a crouch, ready to dive away... but instead of something terrible happening, a path was revealed!  She remained wary for a few moments longer but finally eased back upright when it seemed nothing else was amiss.

"Ey!  Teamwork." she gave a celebratory clap and looked about to the others.  "Right, square away what we need t'figure out here, then let's head down.  I don't think we got as much time as we'd like anymore."

So, last check on things like the Staves and other trinkets around the room before we go?  As ever, Moira and Zaiya on point for detecting magic and traps.

The staves have all lingering auras of magic, but all are mostly faded- save one that has a faint aura of illusion.

The orbs have indeterminate auras but are clearly magical.

Both the cabinets and the glass cases have multiple moderate auras of Abjuration mixed with Enchantment. Zaiya can easily tell the presence of more Glyphs protecting the displays.

Claire did as instructed, standing a safe distance away, she stowed her greatsword and stood back against the tower wall.

To her relief, Moira did not meet with a similarly nasty surprise as she had experienced just a while ago, and the priestess clapped in delight. "Am I glad to be around you smart apples," she cried. "Let's find out once and for all what mischief this madman's been hiding."

OOC: Probably best Moira be at the front of the line to handle checking for traps.  There likely aren't any on the door since we had to get past two layers of concealment just to open the passage, but still - better to be safe than sorry.

Once we open the door at the bottom, however, you tanky folk can go ahead in first while Moira and Zaiya hang back until things start exploding.

DM - Here's a Perception check from Moira for the usual trap/door checking going ahead.

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

As the four head down, the stench of blood becomes obvious to all- the sharp metallic prick mixed with fear and strange chemicals, wafting up from the dim stairwell. Checking the doors, Moira finds no obvious traps- nor does Zaiya detect any additional auras. Opening the basement passageway however, reveals a different scene altogether;

...a second laboratory. One hidden under the tower, the thick stone and depth muffling any sounds that might escape. Here, the cobblestone floor is stained with the occasional splatter of long-dried blood. Dim, reddish light illuminates the room, casting heavy shadows and adding to the eeriness of the place.

To the south-west is an operation table, its raw stone surface scrubbled yet still discolored from the numerous "experiments" performed upon it. A smaller table to the side is lined with dozens of scapels, knives and other equipment that would not look out of place in a torturers dungeon. In between, a solid oak desk has been covered in papers, diagrams depicting the anatomy of various beasts, as well as a number of strange-colored tintcures and other vials (Investigation check to search).

To the south-east, an enormous wooden table has been chained to the wall by heavy iron manacles. Strange symbols have been crudely etched all over its surface and frame (Arcana + Religion check - you need both). As Moira peeks in, the table lunges at her, rattling the heavy chains. It strains and jumps and shakes, the motions eerily like that of a wild animal. Thankfully, its bindings hold storng.

Next to the table is a pile of debris- a mix of discarded vials, twisted cages, leather and what looks like the stone statue of some sort of beastial creature, shattered into multiple parts. More beastial limbs of stone appear to peek out from beneath the pile (Perception/Investigation to search, but you'll be next to the angry table).

To the north-east end of the room is a heavy tarp that appears to cover the passageway to a backroom of some sort. Bloodstains on the floor show clear signs of something, or things being dragged back and forth. A shelf, partially stocked with various alchemical and magical reagents, has been shoved in the corner (Investigation to search).

And lastly, to the north-west is a glowing spell-circle, its runes a shimmering blood-red (Arcana check - hard). The broken, twisted body of a kobold has been chained to the floor inside the circle. Even from this distance, one can easily see that it is dead. Its limbs and neck are bent at odd angles, while its hands, tail and part of his skull appear to have been transmuted into glossy, smooth marble (Medicine check at Advantage).

As the party takes in the horrific sight of the room, U'lin and Moira both hear the rattling of chains coming from the backroom to the north, along with the clang of something heavy slammed against steel.

Auras:
-The entire room has a lingering aura of necromancy
-The spell circle has a strong, volatile(?) aura of transmutation and necromancy
-The chained table has a strong aura of transmutation, abjuration and necromancy
-The pile of junk has faint aura of transmutation
-The table has a mix of weak auras, mostly transmutation, divination, abjuration and necromancy

You think there might be a theme here...

"Well...  Shit"  Zaiya mumbles, looking across the room.

"I don't think I need to mention to everyone that this is pretty much peak Dark Wizard shit in here, from the atmosphere coated in Necromancy to the everything else here, and that spell circle there?"  She points at the angrily glowing rune.

"That thing is terrifying, so I'm going to have to figure out what that means first.  Plus, there's whatever horrible thing is in the next room, and I really hope it doesn't break out while we investigate because a straight fight against a horrible monster sounds like a terrible idea."

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

The view that awaited them... along with the horrid smells and sounds alike... made Moira's skin crawl.  Her thoughts flashed back unbidden to the Kobold Tower most recently and further beyond, back to Hillsfar.  Her gaze bounced about warily as she took in the surroundings and nearly leaped out of her skin when the table, of all things, lunged at them like a chained beast.  Her swords were instantly up and out on pure reflex, though it seemed like the enchanted furniture couldn't get to them just yet despite its obvious murderous desire.

"Damnation..." she aptly cursed.  "Yea, y'got th'lead on this'n, Miss Zaiya.  I don't wanna touch anythin' here 'til it's been cleared... and even then, maybe not."

The Halfling's unsettled expression remained in full with every new sight to be taken in.  Clear signs of torture, a mangled corpse, weird sorcery... why did every tower they entered end up having a nightmare basement?  "Place like this drags up memory of Hillsfar.  We'd scouted out a hidden jail where dissidents of th'local tyranny got shoved, aimed t'spring 'em.  Turned out they'd been lettin' some necromancers or some such diabolists use th'prisoners for experiments.  Ghoulish stuff." she recalled, as if a memory of horrific sights was somehow better than a present moment.  "Burnin' that place t'cinders was th'least it deserved."

Checking the small door to the left; activity, traps, the usual.  Is the door flush with the wall/floor/ceiling, or are there any gaps one might be able to angle a mirror at to see beyond?  Key holes to peer through?

Perception Not going to assume Advantage on this one, in case there's things other folk intend to do in this weird room.

The firbolg's ears went back and rigid, and his eyes were extremely flat and serious.  His jovial and easy-going manner was not present, and with his tall and strong frame, heavy armour, and very serious/upset expression, he presented a fearsome sight.

He didn't speak at first, overwhelmed at the horrors of which his nose had warned, and made calming motions and sounds towards the bestial-acting table.

"Horrible experimenting, corrupting creatures of nature.  Had he not already perished, I would have torn him apart for these offence alone.

"Great Gond, to see such corruption of your spirit of inspiration... fwah."

Claire fought down a wave of nausea prompted by the metallic smell of blood, so thick in the stagnant air. The priestess jumped at the sound of protesting restraints, spinning to point her oathblade at the magicked table. The greatswords's solar aura flicked on, hovering at guard.

"Abominable..." even without the benefit of arcane expertise, she felt the 'wrong-ness' about the place. "His soul is damned, and the very earth this tower stands on corrupted for sure. Ought to put this place to the flame as soon as we get the chance."

She hadn't great sympathy for kobolds after the grisly discovery in the tower before, but it was also difficult to imagine any creature deserving such a horrendous fate. Well, save the wizard who had inflicted it in the first place.

Re: Chapter 3-3a: Hyuth's Tower

OOC: Neither of the green markers are doors - they're more like tent flaps/tarps that seperate the rooms. Its pretty easy to peer through.

@U'lin: Investigation 23 - the shelves are filled with many urns and bottles containing various ingredients used for arcane rituals. U'lin estimates a total value of 210gp worth of alchemical reagents, useful for crafting anything from basic alchemical salves to mid-tier potions.

@Claire: Divine Sense - the stench in this basement almost sends the paladin reeling. The entire room is heavily desecrated, as heavy as any abandoned graveyard. Worse, as Claire approaches the reddish circle she can sense the pale aura of undeath rolling off the kobold's corpse, growing stronger and stronger with each passing second...!

Medicine 16: The kobold shows similar signs of petrifiction akin to the statues the party fought yesterday, against the animated dragon guardian. Worse, the captive in the circle was not...dead. Not until recently. By Claire's guess, it had lain there paralyzed for hours and hours, slowly being drained of life...

As Moira examines the tarp, she catches sight of the room beyond - a room filled with cages.

Crude, rusty iron cages have been stacked around this chamber. Unlike the main lab, there is little to no light here. Still, that does little to disguise the blood splatters, or the few creatures that have been captured and imprisoned in his chamber.

What looks like a wolf, mangy and thin. A once-proud red-hawk, lying flat on the floor of its cage. A goblin- beaten and bruised. An enormous bear in the corner, missing tufts of fur. And an unconscious humanoid wrapped in thin rags, the familiar-looking tattoos of the Uthgardt visible on his bare skin.

All of the creatures here appear to be unconscious. All of them seem...off, somehow. The hawk is the most obvious- squinting her eyes, Moira can see that the hawk's wings appear to be made of stone.

Just then, the Uthgardt man spasms, figure flaying wildly against the bars of the cage again. As he does so, so do the other animals jerk in their cages.

@Zaiya - as you begin to study the circle, you realize that the red circle is slowly pulsing, and with each pulse comes a crashing noise from the northern room.

The pulsing also appears to be getting faster, more frequent...

A gentle whiff of fresh grass brushed against strands of Claire's wheat-blonde hair in the otherwise breezeless dungeon.

"Something's wrong. Terribly wrong."

She whipped her gaze towards the eerie red spell circle, and the kobold's corpse within. "It's...changing, I can feel it."

The pit in her stomach dropped deeper with each unnatural pulse.

"We have to destroy that circle, now!"

Without wasting a single second, her oathblade flares with radiant energy, lighting the profane chamber with a mighty overhead swing aimed at the kobold's center mass.
