Scene 4.3: The Aftermath

"If you don't angry at the sight of failure it means that you don't care about failing." Abigail repeated one of the Captain's maxims. Ya she was angry, had every right to be.

"We didn't need to have that fight. At least, we didn't need to have the fight there. Make the deal that they can leave so long as the hostages are free to go and unharmed, than we pursue them to wherever it is they're holed up at. Not suspecting the lot of us, and with the amount of surveillance in the city, it wouldn't have been hard to keep track of them. Than we take the fight to them when it suits our benefit. And if that moment never comes, than we lick our wounds and wait for them to show themselves again. Had I brought the idea up before hand, it would have been shot down because of some misplaced sense of emergency."

"Don't know why anyone cares whether they walk out with the whole store.  Just a bunch of stupid flashy rocks you buy to get out of the doghouse." Abigail muttered to herself, looking at the ground rather than her supposed teammates.

Scene 4.3: The Aftermath

"We might as well have," Nenanero spoke up from her corner, opening her eyes. She sounded mostly calm, on the surface, if maybe a little impatient. "The two we captured were merely expendable mercenaries. The real threat escaped us. This means our task is not over. But now we can think about it without the... sense of emergency."

She turned towards Abigail. "Do you know of a reason why someone would steal diamonds, and only diamonds?" She had an idea, but perhaps they meant something in Earth culture that she did not know of. Abigail's words seemed to suggest as much, but she didn't really get it.

Scene 4.3: The Aftermath

Abigail pondered on that for a second "Black Market maybe. Loose, uncut diamonds would be easier to sell off than rings, necklaces and the like. Other than that, I've got nothin. Diamonds don't have much practical application. Grinders and tile saws I think, stuff like that. Those are usually done with synthetic diamonds."

Turning over to Warp, who had been unusually quiet up to this point "hey, you knew the guy who owned the shop, right? Was there anything special or unusual about what he had that would have made him a target?"

Scene 4.3: The Aftermath

Warp had been listening, but was in silence, which was unusual for him , always a smart-ass remark. His fist tightened when Nenanero mentioned that the real threat had escaped. But he just kept smoking, his gaze fixed on the floor.

"Besides the obvious value, and that its more practical to steal diamonds that money... they can be used in microchips and other tech stuff.. but If that's the case... they were doing the hit for someone else. And Watford was just an employee there, I don't think he was targeted because of something. His expertise isn't in diamonds, he works the watches area of the store. " He replied without lifting his head.

"So to recap, the main threat got away, and we're left with little evidence to why this took place in the first place?  And you guys wonder why I say we need team training.  At least Damocles agrees with me."  Paladin chimes in, "We also desperately need a leader.  Someone who's word is law out in the fireld, that directs our efforts, and keeps fiascos like this from happening again."

Scene 4.3: The Aftermath

“Hard for us to be a team when people keep actively separating themselves,” Josep said as he entered the room still in his costume though the domino mask he typically wore was clutched in one hand. “Andrew you keep saying we need to work as a team but you also bring up your family as well as your training like it makes a difference. You’re not with your family, you’re on a team so stop acting like you’re something special when everyone here is an equal.” He was not angry or even trying to start a fight. Instead his tone conveyed more exhaustion and probably from being tired from today’s events he could not articulate his thoughts as well as he normally would.

“As for training, yeah we need it but today went the way it did regardless. We haven’t been together for that long so asking us to be prepared for a sudden situation like this is a little much. Even so no one was hurt and the one that got away is on everyone’s radar. Even if we don’t see her again odds are another cape will and bring her in.” He shrugged, unsure if what he said had any merit when compared to everyone he was the one who dragged his feet during the fight. The suggestion of a leader was something he did not know how to handle since he thought they had one but she had disappeared on them.

“A leader would be nice but unless people feel like voting someone into the position then we’ll have to wait until one of us becomes the obvious choice while we’re out in the field.” He held up his hands to show he did not have an answer for it. “Right now we need to make sure we’re all good, gear wise and ourselves as well. Today’s been rough so if anyone needs to talk about it whether privately or openly I’m all ears.”

OOC: Take Josep’s last line as me basically offering to try to help people with their conditions by using the comfort/support move in case anyone wants to remove one of those by having a pep talk.

Scene 4.3: The Aftermath

"Actually Andrew, I'm wondering why you keep talking. All you're doing is digging a deeper hole. No leader worth following acts as if their word is the law. Had that been the understanding and I made the suggestion to hold back and it was ignored, or I kept it to myself knowing it would be rejected, which is what happened, than we end up more results like we had." In her rant, there was a small chuckle "the metaphor is especially poor given that we're a bunch of vigilante's."

"It's not fighting that we need training in. If anything, we have that in spades. What we need is training in tactics, maintaining situational awareness, critical thinking, and how to remain cool under fire." Abigail raised her hands in surrender "I know I'm not the one with those abilities, at least not enough of them to lead" as she said this, her hands lowered again, and she looked back at her extraterrestrial roommate, "But she does. If anyone is fit to be the lead this band of misfit toys, it's Nena."

Scene 4.3: The Aftermath

Nenanero blinked. She did not expect that. It left her feeling conflicted. True, she was made to lead... but not humans. And granted, what Abigail said made sense... but her own results in this operation were abysmal. It wasn't entirely her fault, but it still gave her some cause for self-doubt.

But thinking about it calmly, she really was better positioned to do this than the rest of them, with her training and her powers. And the role did fit her, of course. The only problem was whether or not they would accept an alien as their commander. Having made her decision, she rose from her feet and hovered towards the rest.

"I could do it," Nenanero accepted plainly. "At least for a time, until you find someone more obvious," she glanced at Rook. "If all of you agree to follow me, of course."

"Jesus Hecking Christ!" Sophie growled, back on her feet with those long, long arms spread wide. "What do you think this is? What do any of you think we are? We're a bunch of superpowered screwups who are damn lucky that nobody died today. This isn't swim team. We don't need to elect a captain. We could use a coach, but God knows if anybody'd want anything to do with us after today. If you guys want to slap egos with each other until somebody's satisfied that we're, like, organized, go for it. But don't pretend like it's going to solve anything."

"Nenanero, I'm as happy to have you as leader as anyone else.  It's not the who I'm lamenting, it's the lack of leadership.  As to the leader's word being law, in the field, that's exactly what it should be.  It's the old, when you're asked to jump, you're response should be how high?  And Abigail, so far you're the only one having a problem with what I'm saying."

"So it's threats now?  Just because I have a good point about what we're lacking, don't think the proper response is threatening a teammate.  If my training taught me anything, it's that we need to be people we can all rely on.  I don't mean rely on to get into fights with either.  Excuse me if I've had training that some of you haven't.  I've lived and breathed being a super hero since I was little.  My dad and granddad drove home what being a hero means."

"So live it instead of preaching it. 'Cause right now, you're coming off like a holier-than-thou jerk. You weren't any better out there than the rest of us, and you keep makin' it sound like you were, just 'cause you got a 'history' with this stuff." Space Thing's hand was curled into a fist the size of Paladin's head. She forced it to open and relax.

"Look, I gotta be level with you. All of you. I don't trust any of you enough to go 'how high' when you say jump. It's not going to work out when we're doing stuff just 'cause we said somebody's in charge."

Scene 4.3: The Aftermath

“And either you never paid attention to their lessons or your family must’ve never told you to listen to others because Abigail isn’t the only one who didn't agree with what you are saying.” Josep held up his hands to signal he was done with all of this. “We’re not going to get anything accomplished until we’ve all cooled off and that means giving each other some space. Better to do than to force pieces together and end up breaking the puzzle.“ It was not how he wanted the conversation to end at least how he left it.

“If anyone wants to keep the bickering going then that’s on them. Either way I’m done.” He moved towards the exit so he could change out of his costume but stopped to turn to look at the team. “One more thing” he said, his eyes landing on Sophia. “Screwups or not we’re the ones who bothered to show up today. The building collapsing, the villain getting away is on us just like it’s on us for those people being saved. We’re not the first to botch it this badly, even the ones in the big leagues have dropped the ball. Regardless because of you and everyone else people get to see their families today and that’s worth something. So, we’re not screw-ups, not entirely at least.”

He rubbed the back of his neck whether it was because it was sore from something during the fight or a nervous tick this time was difficult to say. “I agree that I wouldn’t trust any of you to blindly follow orders, but at the end of the day I trust everyone here with my life and more importantly to do the right thing." He gave a nervous smile at speaking so candidly. “And I’ll keep quiet now so the arguing can continue.”

OOC: Rook rolled 13 using 2d6+3.  Comfort/Support (Mundane).

Using the move on Sophia. I forgot about influence so the actual roll is 14, not that it really matters.

Also with that roll I'll add one to team,

"Oh trust me.  I'm being much harder on myself than I am any of you.  I mean, as I've said, I've had the training, and still I botched it up badly enough that the building came down.  Yes Rook, we should be happy we saved those people, but we should also lament the cost that came with it.  Those people we saved?  They're all out of jobs now, and it's our, but mostly my fault."

Scene 4.3: The Aftermath

"Just because your father is the only one who has been in the news doesn't make him the only hero" Abigail said coldly as she sprang from her seat like a weed, her straight posture accentuating her abnormal height. "And just because your father knows how to be a hero doesn't mean you know the first thing about how to be a leader" There was little emotion in her voice, as the emotion started to run down her face "You've never had to try in futile effort to comfort your father as he mourned the loss of friends that he ordered to their deaths." She could no longer hold back her emotions. With a deep breath, she quietly swore "God-damn it" as she hurried out of the room, ashamed of herself.

Scene 4.3: The Aftermath

"Oh for F*** sake, let's stop the "I've had it worse than you" competition." He said putting off the cigarette and talking to them. There was a weird look on his face, part annoyed, part angry, part... something else. "We are all messed up, I get it. But that doesn't mean anyone of us can claim that their shitty experiences are worse or better. You cant compare that. If not I could totally win this by playing the "I'm the son of a villain plus loosing an arm" card. Oops, I guess I just did."  He smirked.

"But I Know I messed up, because we weren't prepared. I know I failed, because I panicked, and I was in pain. Still am. I let her escape. I don't know if it will happen again. I hope it doesn't. But I think we all want to try and make it  work, if  not we wouldn't be here... gah, I think I'm going to puke just for  hearing me say those words." He made a gagging sound.

Scene 4.3: The Aftermath

Closing his eyes a moment, Liam sighed quietly as he squeezed the bridged of his nose a moment.  "No one is listening," he said aloud, though he made a mental note to excuse Nenanero from that.  She hadn't done anything beyond ask a valid question from her perspective.  "Just going round and round, pointing fingers, complaining, doing the 'one up' thing," he added with a nod towards Warp.  "I know we're all in high school technically, but can we please grow up?  Just a little?"

"Instead of being all negative and complaining and whatever, how about we try solving the problem?  And we all seem to agree we've got them so let's work on it.  We're in this together so let's act like it.  What could we have done better?  What can we do to be more prepared?  How can we improve?  Hell, since this seems to be a hang up, do we need a leader and if so who?  Personally I'm with Sophia on this.  No one here is ready or viewed like they should be in charge by the majority.  But just my opinion."

"Why don't I go first?  I should have enhanced people before they rushed through the portal, not waiting until the last moment.  I should have hung back and left the portal open so we could pull people out faster without moving through a dangerous area.  There's also the whole control thing but that's already established," he remarked, half to himself and half out loud.

Scene 4.3: The Aftermath

Nenanero could do little but listen. She needed to know their opinions, and hearing them out all at once was faster than searching their minds one by one. There was still much that she did not understand about humans - which was perhaps the best argument against her leading them. But some of them didn't seem to want a leader at all, or thought they were not worthy of one - as near as she could tell.

She watched, inscrutably, as Abigail ran out, then, after a short pause, turned to Sophia. "You do not have to follow orders blindly. But we need to coordinate our actions better in the field. Our plan worked as far as getting out the hostages went. It was what we did beyond that, that went awry, because we lost track of what the others were doing."

The alien paused, finishing some mental calculations, then glanced at Warp. "As for myself, I should not have let you have all the attention. If she did not fire on you, you would not have panicked. I did not realise that you were in that much pain. What were you trying to do back then, anyway?" Psychological warfare she could understand - she used it herself, just earlier in the fight - but that was not what they needed then...

He had hoped no one had asked, because he didn't have an answer, or not a good one. But Nenanero did. "I..uh.. I don't know. I waned to not get hit by ice-shards..and I wanted to get her out of that place..but..miscalculated... the fact that  I had to move and not just port. And the pain didn't help with my focus. If I don't focus my teleport can go a bit...bad" He shrugged, not wanting to go into more detail.

Sophia had caused the roof to fall on them and no one said anything to her, so why he should go further. So just stood up and, after leaving the ice pack back on the fridge, he teleported out of the room.
