Re: OOC

Normally, the GM tells the players what combination of Attributes & Disciplines apply before they make the roll.  However, players are free to suggest a different combo as a "different way of approaching the issue", and as long as it fits, it can fly.  For example, using Sensors could be a Security or Science task, depending on what you're using them for.  Reason is often the attribute you'd use, but Insight could also apply.  Control is more about precision, aim, that kind of thing.

The ship CAN assist in a shipboard task, BUT its successes only count if you score some on your own.  In the example of Naryss' roll, he scored no successes, so even if you'd rolled an extra die for the ship, it would not have helped.

I fully approve of narrative bits like you guys are doing.  Just be aware that the NORMAL procedure for the mechanics goes like this:

- GM suggests Attribute + Discipline combo to roll; player is free to pitch alternatives.  I often say "Make a Reason or Intuition plus Engineering check, whichever is better."
- GM sets and announces difficulty.  This is the number of successes you need to achieve.  By telling you ahead of time, it does more than keep me honest, it tells you how hard the task will be and informs your decision to buy more dice using Momentum.
- Other player(s) may offer to assist.  Typically only one assist applies.  The assist rolls a single die, and may use a different Attribute/Discipline combo entirely as appropriate.  For example, If Naryss was scanning an enemy vessel for weakness, he might roll his Insight + Security, with Decker assisting with a single die using his Reason + Science.
- You may purchase additional dice to roll with Momentum, or spending Determination.
- You roll the dice. Any successes above and beyond this number generate Momentum for the group pool. This momentum can often be used as an "immediate spend" to do more damage, get more info, fix the thing faster, etc... or stockpiled for later use.  Max Momentum Pool is 6. ;)

I've created a thread/notice about dice and mechanics, above.  Hopefully that helps. :)

Re: OOC

In reply to Starfleet Command (msg # 66):

I believe that, like ships, characters can only assist characters if the character who initiates the action scores at least one success.

Question:  In this example, I assume that ch'Pertha could have enlisted the ship's help - Security + Sensors for performing a tactical scan, perhaps?  And that would give him a ship die.  Could another player (such as Decker) then also aided him, providing a single Decker die?  Or is it just a single assist from either source?

Re: OOC

You can gain a die from the ship, and still get a die from another character, at the GM's discretion (it has to fit).  However, the more bonus dice you gain, the GM has the option of raising the complication range (too many cooks in the kitchen).  ;)

Re: OOC

Awesome.  Thank you.
That’s all good information.

My only two follow-up questions are:

1/ how did Decker attain four successes of three dice, please?
Decker:
Today: LCDR Christopher Decker rolled 12 using 3d20 with rolls of 8,3,1. Attempting to identify sensor contact.
4 successes, with the ship achieving a critical success ...

And
2/ {getting back into the IC} what are the game effects of said successes?

Oh, Edit:    Is the answer to ‘1/ ‘ that the ship rolled a ‘1’, which always provides two successes??

Re: OOC

In reply to LCDR Naryss ch'Pertha (msg # 70):

Correct. A ship does not have focuses, but treats every task that it attempts or aids as if it has one that applies. So it will score 2 successes on a roll that is equal to or less than the applicable department. BUT, in this case it just saved time and rolled a 1 which always counts as 2.

And yes, having done or tried to do something, I'm waiting.  I assume that's how this works?  All the players take an action and then the GM hoses us responds?

Re: OOC

On RPoL, most games are happy for players to use whatever colour they wish.
It’s unusual for all players to use the same, though.

And am I wrong to consider Shields to be a Tactical measure, rather than a piloting one?

Different people will have different opinions on matters; including who’s job it is to do certain things.

Just as we players will have different opinions.

Re: OOC

I'm not sure this is working out like I envisioned! ;)

Seriously, tho.  In the era, Helm and Nav both often handled weapons duties including shields.  Only in the movies (ST I, ST II, etc) did Security get a "Tactical Station", which could do both.  In Wrath of Khan, Chekov used that station to fire Torpedoes, while Sulu used the Helm to fire phasers.

In ship combat, every PC gets 1 action per turn, unless they do a Momentum spend to buy a second action (which can only be done once, and that action takes a +1 Difficulty penalty).

Re: OOC

1/ roll 2x d20.     Anything that is equal or less than your Control+Conn total is a success.

1.5/  of you have a focus that is appropriate, each of those successes you rolled doubles.

2/ roll another d20 because the ship’s systems are helping you. If it rolls an ‘11’ or better, that’s another two successes for you.

3/ the GM will roll for E’Detra’s assistances; if he gets any successes, he’ll tell you and factor it in.
