First question... what uniforms do people want to wear?  This will (slightly) determine decade of play... 2260s or 2280s?

Greetings all,

I'm proposing  Naryss ch'Pertha  for Chief of Security.

Naryss is a (rather stereo-typical) tough ass Andorian; a Starfleet Brat from his homeworld, he led a 'misspent youth' before finding discipline, direction and purpose in the Starfleet Academy.
That was some time ago, and Naryss is now considered an worthy Lieutenant Commander, and Security Chief.

As for uniform, I do have to side with the very cool cross-breasted designs of 2280's ... definitely with the optional vest.
Cos that is so cool.

If we're looking at the "Wrath of Khan" era, I'm suggesting a Miranda-class ship for our heroes.  Always loved me the Reliant...

Bring it on, boss.    She looks a sweetheart.

They say “the grass is always greener”, eh JavKer.
Maybe we can find time between incidents to get you home for a while.

So as I continue to explore the rules, and re-peruse the character I have made, it turns out that he is more the 'ground thumper' and 'action hero' style Security Officer ... rather than the 'fire photon torpedoes' type.

He's more the 'infiltrate' and 'take 'em out before they even know we are there' kind of Security Officer ... rather than the 'decrypt the hidden message' and then 'interrogate 'em gently' type.

But he does lead from the front, and seems to inspire his troops.  He never willingly leaves 'a man' behind; and is well versed at dealing with the sort of immediate medical attentions that are needed in the field.

And ... he is a formidable foe in hand-to-hand conflict.
If we are ever boarded by, or are boarding, an enemy, he's the guy you want running down the corridor towards/leading the incursion.

All in all, it seems that (again) I've made a Combat Wombat.
Which I can live with.

Dale,
Under 'Momentum' in the Quickstart Rules, it says "The Player group may only ever have a pool of 6 Momentum at any one time".

Do Characters have Momentum, or does 'the team' have Momentum?
When my character generates Momentum, is it mine ... or does it go straight into the 'team Momentum' pool?

Naryss is perfectly capable of manning a weapons console, too.  He just doesn't have the Focus(es) to be a rock star at it.

You roll 2d20, wanting low.  Your target number is (for weapons) Control + Security, or 13 or less.  Each die you roll that meets or goes lower than 13 is a success.  Each '1' counts as 2 successes, or, if you have an applicable Focus, your skill would be the Crit threshold.  So if you had "Starship Weaponry" as a focus, you'd crit on a 5 or less instead of a 1 (5 being your security rating). Crits count as TWO successes instead of 1.

As for Momentum, it's a group pool.  Anyone can take from it or add to it.  The cap is 6, but you can do an "Immediate Spend" if you earn more and are at cap in many cases.

In reply to Starfleet Command (msg # 2):

I think the 2280's would be a lot of fun.

The Reliant seemed like a pretty well-armed ship for a science vessel and the crew didn't seem very engaged in its survey duties. In fact, I remember reading a fan post ages ago complaining that the roles of the Grissom and the Reliant were swapped - the Grissom would have been the perfect choice for flying around finding a test world for Genesis, whereas the Reliant would have been a much better ship for watching over the scandal-ridden and Klingon-infested Genesis Planet. But I digress...

A Science Officer could be molded in a lot of different ways depending upon his role in Starfleet, or rather, a Science Officer on board a more militarily inclined vessel would probably be very different than one assigned to the Galaxy Exploration Command.

[ETA: I'm considering either a Human, Vulcan, or Denobulan for my Science Officer.]

Would it be fair to ask where our heavily armed dreadnought of peace and understanding leans?
