Repair & Resupply

The Independence approached Starbase 24, somewhat battered from her efforts to save the planet Chaktir.  Worse than the minor damage the ship had taken, though, was the price her crew had paid in the line of duty...

(This will be a brief interlude thread to allow transition to the next adventure.  Feel free to post activities here as you wish!)

While the captain is in charge of the memorial services Chaplain Saghalie performs any religious parts.

He begins to read (again) comm-related manuals and working though simulations, checking the data and experiences against the actual equipment. He also begins to familiarize himself with the archives.

As Tsolo worked on his research, his assistant COMMS officer - LT Lyn Nipay - did her best to be helpful in familiarizing him with the ship's systems.  They were different from Abyss station's.

"Just let me know if I can be of any help," she smiled, a bit wanly, as she handed him an electronic clipboard with archives and records.

As ch'Pertha sat in the "big chair" - now his - a familiar form moved over from the weapons station.  His Trill junior, LT E'Detra, who often manned the weapons console during combat.

"Captain," she said, emphasizing his title.  Then handed him an electronic clipboard to review.  "Latest reports on the weapons section.  We're fit and ready for action, if need be.  Shields on the other hand, remain sketchy.  Too much battering from that radiation jet.  Nothing a little yard time won't fix," she added.

Repair & Resupply

Decker, still processing a certain amount of guilt and sorrow, throws himself into his work. He didn't know any of the deceased officers well, but Jav'Ker and Mcreeg both died in close proximity, and in his place. He delegates most of the repair and maintenance work on his immediate junior officers and focuses on processing what data they were able to recover from the artifact. He will, reluctantly, consult with T'Lara and/or Saghalie for assistance with translation.

Repair & Resupply

Words flow past the shimmering screen.

...Petty Officer Amamiya...upon U.S.S. Independence, under command of...aboard from Starbase 24...for a duration of...subject to...

Seen before, with only the names altered, the words carry a certain, comforting familiarity.

The young woman ponders opportunities.  Multiple ways to get aboard the ship, but the least obtrusive seems to be the shuttles carrying larger supplies.  There's the docking port, of course, and the transporters, the swiftest route.  But transporters are generally reserved for important equipment and officers; not so much for junior medical bay personnel.  And the docking port?

Well, reasons exist not to choose that method of ingress.

Hefting her (small) carry-all, Azami heads for the shuttle pad.  It's a bit of a walk, but the carry-all holds little in the way of personal items, and the distance gives her time to study the ship as she slips around the people hurrying to and fro.  Miranda-class - primarily scientific study, though potentially patrol duty.  The crew-complement is small, and it's likely she's one of only a few in the medical bay.  Weapons and tactical capacity...not really terribly important for Azami, and mostly over her head.  If pressed, the Petty Officer feels confident she could manage as a 'final choice' of operators.

'Could'.  Not would.

Moving into the cargo area, close to the shuttles, she keeps within the safety zones while searching for a supervisor; it wouldn't do to arrive at her new posting with a broken leg, thanks to a poor meeting with a pallet-mover.  Spotting someone standing as a hub of frustrated and annoyed workers, all claiming their particular shipments have priority, Azami adroitly slips into the crowd and waits for a lull.  It'll happen; she merely requires patience.

The young medic happens to have a surfeit of that particular resource.

Minutes pass, then she sees her chance.  Stepping up, Azami offers a casual salute to get the supervisor's attention; without it, it's likely he wouldn't have taken note.  "Pardon me.  I have orders," she states, with a twitch of her head toward the ship while holding out the datapad. "Medical."  Just in case he hasn't noticed the piping on her uniform; 'medical' tends to open doors among the non-commissioned.

Everyone wants to be on the good side of the people who patch them up when accidents happen.

"Would you happen to have a shipment that's underweight by approximately sixty kilos?"  Always better to highball estimates than lowball.

Thank you Tsolo replies. He looks at her eye-to-eye with a smile. At the moment, I believe there are three ways you can help.

If you already are not, become familiar with the equipment and procedures we use.

From time to time, check on  my progress with same, and think of scenarios that require quick thinking and acting.

Observe what I'm doing and warn me if I'm about to err.

In  return, I'll try to be helpful to you; we're a team.

He pauses. And if either of us is feeling below par or are troubled, let's get the matter addressed.

The supervisor, a heavy-set human of South American ancestry, was checking his manifest and looked up.  His expression of annoyance quickly shifted once he recognized Azami's medical colors.

"Depends," he said, but his tone was soft.  "Where to?"

And when she told him:

"We'll make it work.  She's due in to dock in minutes.  Grab your gear and stand... nah, grab a seat on that crate there," he gestured, scratching his mustache.

Before Azami could do so, he added, "Say Doc... not to bother ya, but I gotta ask.  My cat, he's been coughing up these hairballs lately, and his stool's been kinda soft.  I tried changing his diet, but he won't eat the dry food, and just meows and meows for the wet food..."

Repair & Resupply

In reply to LCDR Christopher Decker (msg # 5):

Decker's research bears some interesting fruit. While there are huge gaps in the technical specifications - anything needed to actually recreate the technology - there's enough to reveal some interesting data.

One fact stands clear: The Ithik, from the planet Chaktir, were originally the servitors and/or custodians of the artifact.  Genetically engineered by whomever had marvelously created the artifact.  It seemed that surviving the initial supernova had damaged their memories... or the secret had not been passed on to most.

Another data packet shows that there were other, similar artifacts in the galaxy... but he'll need help with the translation, from either T'solo or T'Lara.

LT Nipay's smile softened when Tsolo met her gaze, becoming a bit less brittle.

"I'm fairly familiar with the equipment, sir; I've served on Independence as a Comms officer for over a year now," she said sincerely.  "I'll show you whatever I can."

Re: Repair & Resupply

Just a few weeks earlier, D'rala had not imagined she was on the verge of leaving her post at Abyss Station, but fate had revealed other plans to her.

When they had returned to the space Station, she'd found the place hollow without the presence of the away team she had led to their doom aboard the artifact; not to mention the knowledge that her commanding officer would be in hospital care a good while, and would likely face a tribunal for her crimes after. D'rala hoped the federation would see that the artifact had likely warped the vulcan woman's mind, and help her rather than punish her.

It was a guilty relief when she received her orders of reassignment.

The sight of the gleaming hull of the Independence was the first thing that returned a spark to her chest after her losses. Knowing that she'd be taking off to journey between the stars again was a balm.

When she left Abyss Station behind aboard the Independence, she set herself firmly to the task at hand: learning to be the Executive Officer to these people she was just coming to know. There was no time to sulk in her rooms now.

Just a little set up for where D'rala's at right now character wise.

Re: Repair & Resupply

Thank you for telling me. Chance, as some would call it, has brought us together. Hearing and seeing you, I'm reminded....

There is a compilation called The Bible. In is a book of songs...poems. Many of them are pleas for help and thankfulness and gratitude for that help. In particular, I remember this:

[Psalm 118]
The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
The Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.

So let that be our watchwords as we begin by working through the manuals. Not much poetry in them, but there is plenty of meat and perhaps bones, a skeleton to give us structure.

Repair & Resupply

The Science Officer grumbled to himself. He'd taken this as far as he could on his own. In direct contradiction to his nature, the last thing he wanted to do at the moment was to collaborate with one of his fellow officers. Nevertheless, the implications of what he'd discovered demanded that he follow up.

He wrote a quick message to both T'Lara and Tsolo outlining his findings and requesting a meeting to begin an in-depth translation of the key data packet.

Finally, noticing the time, he put his console into standby mode and headed off to the gym to work off a little frustration.

T’Lara tried to keep herself busy since their mission at the Abyss.   Exercising, painting, sending messages to her parents on the hyperchannels.  Anything to keep her mind from thinking about the recent tragedies.  As a trained psychologist, she knew it was a bad way to cope with grief.    She even counseled to do the exact opposite on her sessions with Mcreeg's and Javker's closet friends.  But it was one thing to give the advice, and another thing altogether following it herself.

When the message arrived from Decker she was all too happy to use it as another excuse to avoid sorting herself out.  She replied almost immediately, confirming she’ll be happy to talk with him the first chance she gets.

"My thanks," Azami replies, but they're not yet finished.  Eyebrows rise slightly as the question comes, and she nods slowly along with the man's explanation.  His worries are understandable.  "Cats are not my area of expertise," she cautions.  "And if this continues, or has been an issue for more than two or three days, you should bring your companion to a veterinarian."

Squinting, the young woman searches her memories, hunting through her education for possible answers.  "Wet food tends to be better than hard, as hard can promote diabetes in cats.  But the wet food has its own problems; best you ensure it is high-protein, very good quality.  Not always possible to find," she admits with a shrug and a wry glance around the Starbase.  "And, of course, there is the issue of teeth cleaning.  But setting that aside, are we speaking of diarrhea?  Or merely soft stools?  And the hairballs - how often, and compared to before?"

Slowly she leads the man through a more thorough description of what ails his companion, seeking as she does to find a potential problem...or eliminate possible issues, one by one.  It's no issue for her whatsoever; it is, in fact, the very reason Azami chose the uniform with the green piping when she joined Starfleet.

As D'rala went about familiarizing herself with ship and crew, she became aware that - while the crew were good people and well-trained - recent events had left them in somewhat of a disarray.  Too many changes in too short a time had caused confusion and damaged morale.  Their XO had been promoted to Captain, leaving a junior officer filling in as security chief; their CMO had transferred to Abyss station along with the former captain, leaving no clear head in Medical; and they'd lost a popular young helmsman in Mcreeg.

And the situation in Engineering was similar to Medical, but worse... as there were more repairs needed to the ship than to the crew.  As D'rala saw when she entered the cavernous main engineering to the sounds of exasperated shouts and clanging...

"Shiksho...!  Bakayero!!  Be careful with that! Watch that main damper or you'll blow out the whole impulse deck!"

Engineers scrambled to handle fractious repairs while heavy equipment moved about, sparks flying from welding arcs and open panels.  A thin haze of smoke filled the air, overwhelming the environmental purifiers.  At the center of it all, somehow coordinating chaos, was a petite young woman, a human of Japanese ancestry.  D'rala had met her briefly upon return to the Independence... LT Kimiko Harada, JavKer's assistant engineer.  Now the de facto CHENG.

She'd been overwhelmed with grief and emotion then.  None of that was present now.  She was doing her best to tame the hurricane.  But the strain was obvious.

Tsolo is relaxed. However, perhaps to LT Nipay's annoyance, he asks from time to time before moving on What might go wrong related to what we've just covered. If anything, how do we correct or fix the matter?  At some time, the team identfies parts that least unlikely to have a problem (think keyboard, mouse, power failure).

The team visits Supply and procures relevant substitute parts, including a spare battery and places them at/by Comm, using duct tape to secure against sliding around.

When he returned from the gym, Decker checked his messages before heading to the sonic shower. While he was confident in his subordinates' abilities to handle Science's R&R duties, he was keenly aware that he was ultimately responsible for the department performance. After responding to a few routine questions he read Tsolo and T'Lara's replies. He quickly pulled up all three of their schedules and suggested a couple of meeting times in the next 24 hours.

Then he headed off for a badly needed shower before an even more badly needed late dinner.

OOC: I'm assuming Science got off relatively lightly - no major damage, either to equipment or staff. If there are issues that really need his direct involvement he will spend the time necessary to take care of them, albeit the minimum time necessary.

Azami restrains herself from wincing; it seems likely the other medic took offense a tad too soon, given the supervisor approaching her as well.  There is nothing feline in her lineage, to the best of her knowledge.  "I am more than happy to assist," she assures the jovial worker, glad she doesn't need to step in with a correction with regards to speciesism.  "Though please keep in mind that I am no veterinarian, and my own advice should be followed up with a professional."

With a small nod, she moves to where the man indicates, sitting herself down and waiting patiently, carry-all on her lap.  It's not uncomfortable at all; there's little enough in the bag, beyond a few necessities; the young woman prefers to travel light.

Baggage can become problematic, at times.

Her eyes flick to follow the movement of the shuttles to and fro, and sweep about the area, searching for possible hazards; it's a loading dock, and large, heavy crates are in motion.  Always best, Azumi ponders, to be on at least partial alert for danger.

Always best.

Again, her eyes return to the ship.  A small smile touches her lips, there and gone again.

With nothing better to do but wait, the PO slowly relaxes her body against the backrest, sinking into the chair.  With the supervisor alerted to her presence, it's unlikely he'll forget her; to everyone else, Azami knows she'll slowly become part of the background, eventually passed over completely.  That is, and has always been, part and parcel of her presence...or lack thereof.

It's a perk for her, not a curse.

This gives her time; time to read over the latest medical notes regarding the potential species she might need to deal with upon the Independence, cross-referencing them with her own, trained knowledge of biological systems and kinesiology.  Andorian, Human, Orion, Vulcan; a wide range of systems and motion potential.

What were the norms?

Andorian.  Blue-blooded.  System incompatible with current IV technology, muscular injection necessary.  Emotional content in reactions considered...

Humans.  Multiple blood types to consider.  Allergies to different medications and compounds varied across individuals.  Tribal sense overdeveloped with regards to...

Orions.  Strong circulatory system.  Higher-developed fast-twitch musculature.  Blood types similar to...

Vulcan.  Copper-based blood.  Extremely strong constitution.  Circulatory system generally consistent with...

A great deal of information to process, and she plays it over and over in her head, contrasting her Starfleet training with her own, earlier experiences.  She needs to be prepared, to know without thinking; people's lives will depend on her ability to react, and react properly sans pauses for thought.  That is, Azami considers with bleak amusement, both a contrast and similarity to her youth.

Breathing out a sigh, she releases the information into the back of her mind, allowing it to settle itself once again, hopefully in a more immediately accessible fashion.  Rising, the young woman stretches once, relaxes, then sits.  Once again, she checks her roster; it's dated, and there's some indication from the updating system that there have been changes to the command staff.  Best she set aside her assumptions on 'who sits where' for the moment; better to start from scratch than have an embarrassing slip-up.

Back to waiting.

Coordinating, even as the Independence pulled into dock, T'Lara, Tsolo and Decker were able to translate the data and findings from the ancient artifact.  Together, they discerned a startling fact:

The artifact was not unique.

There's data that shows several other weapon sites throughout space. The biggest problem is that at least one of these sites is in Klingon space, and another in Romulan space.

With the quartermaster's appreciation warming her heart, the PO sits and waits.  It isn't long before her destination comes into view.  Azami's eyebrows rise further at the sight of the ship, itself.  It's...damaged.  On another day, Azami might have gone with 'impressive', but right now that's the qualifier that fits.  She can't tell what kind of weapon or stress caused the buckled area, or the burned section, but clearly the Independence has been put through a wringer.

As a medical tech, she wishes for boredom; it seems this assignment might be anything but.

Her head swivels as the young man moves up to catch her attention, and Azami nods, a touch hesitantly, before standing.  "Thank you." With a small smile for her guide, she follows to where he indicates, glancing about in search of the pilot, and a seat of some kind...in that order.

It's always good to show one's appreciation for those who would help.

Enough time to stop by her quarters for a quick shower, and an even quicker bite to eat, before hurrying to the science department.   She was happy to be given the opportunity to decipher a new language – studying alien civilizations was one of the reasons she signed up for a position on the USS Independence to begin with.  The mental stimulation was welcomed as well.

Unfortunately, the actual information they uncovered from the station's databanks put a damper on her mood.

“This isn’t good, is it?” she raised her head from looking at the datapad “We better send a message to Starfleet command”

Re: Repair & Resupply

ch'Pertha had sent Ltn Commander Vex a request for a private audience.
It was official, but the politely worded request had (hopefully) made it clear that the matter was not urgent, and that he would appreciate her time when it was convenient for her.
It did, though, appear to be an official meeting between the two.

I'm am guessing that we can run this simultaneous with Vex meeting Hanara:  but at another IC time.

When LCDR Vex entered the small room, ch'Pertha was alone, and reading her file on the data-screen.   He did not try to hide this.
But as she entered, he turned in his chair to give her his attention, rather than the datafile.

"Greetings, Ltn Commander.  Please, take a seat.
I invited you here so we could discuss our working relationship,
" he said, gesturing to the seat opposite.
Since the events at Abyss Station, the two had received their new assignments, but hadn't quite had the opportunity to interact formally in those roles.
"I hope you are finding your new quarter's satisfactory.   Is there any issues about your transfer to the ship that we need to see to, before we get down to 'talking shop' ... or 'ship' as the case is?"

Decker smiled thinly and shook his head, "No, it isn't good at all, T'Lara. But while this is a science and engineering discovery, the reality of the situation is that it's much more of a security issue. I won't be reporting this to anyone other than the Captain. I'm going to lock down all our working files as tightly as possible. And I think the three of us can save ourselves a lot of trouble and treat this information as well above our security classification - which I'm sure it will be very shortly. It should go without saying, but please do not speak of this to anyone else."

To Harada

"Think nothing of it," D'rala replied with a professional, though genuine, smile. "No need to stand on ceremony while you're working."

D'rala side stepped an outpouring of steam from a pipe being worked on by another engineer.

"I won't take up too much of your time, but I wanted to ask if you have everything you need."

To ch'Pertha

Sounds good, I was going to suggest a convo anyway! :)

The question of when and where to approach Commander ch'Pertha was resolved for her when D'rala received the summons to meet. She'd been intending to find the right  moment for a one on one since before launch. They had worked well together during the fatal crisis aboard the artifact, but what their working relationship aboard the Independence would be like was yet to be seen.

When D'rala entered the meeting room the image of her own face on the Commander's screen caught her eye, but she chose not to linger on it.

"Thank you, Commander," she replied, and took the seat opposite CDR ch'Pertha. She watched him with expectant curiosity. He seemed in good enough spirits, but there was always a bit of an edgea to meeting a new Commanding Officer.

"I was glad to receive the invitation; I've been looking for the right time to stop in, but I know things were busy during launch. I don't know if you were involved in the decision, but I appreciate you taking me on." She almost added another thanks for finding her on artifact, but the wounds of the losses had in that ancient place made her shy away from referencing it.

"None at all. The Independence is lovely, and everyone I've come across so far has been quite welcoming. I look forward to serving here." It was the truth. D'rala needed to leave behind the tragedy of her last posting, and a new beginning aboard the Independence felt alight with possibility.

Re: Repair & Resupply

Azumi's shuttle ride over is brief, lengthened only by the young pilot doing a circuitous fly-by of the now-docked Independence.

One feature of the Miranda-class ships are the twin expanded hanger bays on the aft of the saucer. The cargo shuttle heads into Bay 2, a cavernous, bustling hub of activity as cargo is offloaded and enlisted personnel scramble to keep it from becoming chaos as the cargo is routed to its proper destination.

An older human with salt-and-pepper hair and an impressive mustache looks up from his electronic manifest and spies Azumi as she exits the shuttle with some surprise.

"Well now," he drawled, the Texan in his voice prominent.  "What brings you here on this magic carpet ride?" he asked.

Re: Repair & Resupply

The shuttle ride, while short, is still an enjoyable experience for the Petty Officer; even after a few years in Starfleet, she hasn’t often had the opportunity.  Certainly this is the first time she’s had the means to get such a good look at the ship upon which she will serve, and this is the first vessel of such a size.  Peering through the window, she makes out the modified hanger bays, and her eyebrows rise.  Interesting…and curious.  For what reason does the Independence require such largesse?  Not hers to reason why, Azami concludes; if she needs to know, someone will tell her.  Unlikely; the Petty Officer is medical, and rather low on the totem pole with regards to rank.  Atop that, she’s a poor hand at flying shuttles, barely having passed that section of her training.  Wryly, the young woman considers her Starfleet training, and the results.  Not exactly a ringing endorsement of my presence here.

It surprises her that she has received a posting on a vessel this size, this far out; perhaps, Azami muses, there simply was no other person available.

The rest of the ship is sweeping curves, with few straight lines outside of the nacelles; pursing her lips, Azami nods with a hint of approval.  This class of vessel, compact and clean, holds appeal for her on an aesthetic level.  Now, if only they could repair the visible damage.  Up close, it’s even more disturbing.   Scars mean damage.  Damage means casualties.  She closes her eyes.

…the lights outside the window lay shadows on the sleeping boy’s face…

The grey eyes snap open, staring blindly out the porthole for several very quick heartbeats.  With a few long, slow breaths, Azami brings down her heartrate, controls her breathing, and lets the devil’s cocktail that memory has mixed slowly leave her system.  By the time they arrive at their goal, she is once again the picture of equanimity.

Into the second hanger they fly; the shuttle settles, and after a brief thank you to the pilot, Azami slips out, eyes on the hunt for potential collisions.  It’s borderline chaos, here, and getting run over by a cargo-hauler would only set the timetable back that much more, and certainly not endear her to the command staff…or the other enlisted, all attempting to keep to schedule.  Shifting by a set of hovering crates, Azami swivels her head to study her greeter; her body follows, quick steps taking her forward.  Small carry-on in-hand, she stops in front of the mustached man and offers a quick salute.  “Petty Officer Amamiya Azumi, reporting for duty.”  Delievered in quiet, smooth tones, it’s factual rather than officious.  Digging into her carry-on’s side pocket, she locates her e-clipboard and offers it to the older man with a small nod.  The pad is set to display those orders; Azami believes in being prepared.

“Medical,” she continues in the same quiet, laconic fashion.  “If you have anything for the Med-bay that isn’t outsized, I can certainly save you a trip..”

Re: Repair & Resupply

D'rala glanced towards her displayed file and then back towards ch'Pertha.

"Thank you, Commander." she replied. "Yes, of course."

"First and foremost, I go where I'm needed."  Already sitting quite upright, she managed to sit even straighter as she began to answer with an even-keel intensity that snuck into her demeanor when discussing matters of the job. "

"In my last assignment, I worked closely with personnel. I like the officers and crewman to know that they can approach me with any issues that may arise while aboard. On that front, I've started making the rounds to get a better sense of everyone and introduce myself."

"I'm capable of any administrative duties necessary, and I don't shirk my paperwork, but I'm better in the field or dealing with people than behind a desk."

"I feel my studies in culture have allowed me to develop a good diplomatic sense. I wasn't raised in the Federation, but I've dedicated a lot of time and study to being able to function well here, and to understanding the social nuances of these areas of space. I'd also like to think my position as an outsider allows me to offer a point points of view that might not otherwise be present."

When D'rala finished speaking, she smiled politely, watching him for his response.

To Harada

D'rala offered a sympathetic look: a genuine reaction to recalling the fatalities on the artifact. She would have perhaps set a hand on the woman's arm if they had not been in the engine room, on the job, but instead opted to offer support from a distance.

"The words do little, but I'm very sorry for the losses your crew suffered. They were brave and honorable men." It is not far from her thoughts that those men would not have been there in the first place had her team returned in the intended time, or had she finished freeing herself from the wreckage a little sooner, and found a way to make contact with the station. She pressed the thought aside, refocusing her full attention on Chief Harada.

“Thank you, chief.”  Azami nods, her mind racing.  Were she born three hundred years ago, she wouldn’t have dreamed of correcting a superior…and even now, cultural bias can be difficult to ignore.  But it isn’t three hundred years in the past, and Azami has experienced some cultural challenges since leaving her world for the final time.  Besides which, a small correction now might spare embarrassment and conflict in the future.  With a tiny grimace, she continues.  “Apologies, chief; Az – a – mi.”  The corpswoman offers a small shrug as a smile’s ghost passes across her face. “Oddly, many people tend to shift to Azumi.”  A helpless shrug follows.  “It might have something to do with Federation Standard.

Finished, she looks away, studying the flow of movement around them.  Her grey eyes seek out faces, committing them to memory, searching them for signs that they are accustomed to this, or merely transients aboard this vessel, their true home the starbase ‘below’.  It should give the chief time to make his call, and hopefully to process her small correction without taking offense.  She has no real read on his personality, yet, and some people take offense at offered clarification.  It wouldn’t be the first time, to be sure, and Azami hopes to avoid any awkwardness with a crewmember, even if he will be outside her direct chain of command.

T’Lara had a lot to ponder as she made it back to her quarters.  Two more weapons of mass destruction, floating around in Klingon and Romulan space.  It was only a matter of time until they found them, be it months, years, or decades.  And then what?  She wanted to believe the Klingons wouldn’t stoop to using such a weapon (killing billions with the flick of a switch wasn’t very glorious), but there was no counting on it.  The Romulans’ ambition, however, knew no bounds.  She could definitely imagine them destroying entire planets, particularly if they were affected by the stations' radiation in the same way their Vulcan cousins were.

*sigh*

She was already out of the trubolift when she heard Carter calling her back over the comms. Greeting a new officer was always a pleasure, especially if she would end up working with him.  Or her.
“-On my way”

*********

T’Lara arrived at the shuttle bay a moment later and made a beeline toward the CPO as soon as she spotted him.  Assuming the genteel woman standing by his side was the new officer he mentioned, she beamed at her and stepped forward to introduce herself:
“Lieutenant Commander T’Lara, here to welcome you aboard”

Re: Repair & Resupply

Azami's eyebrows tent slightly as she notes the shift in the chief's colour.  A touch embarrassed herself at having brought about such concern, she stills in place, relaxing into her feet.  "Please don't concern yourself," the young woman begins, but he's off and running, hunting for a billet while contacting someone to meet her.  Opting for allowing him to continue, Azami waits in silence until he finishes.  The counselor?  An interesting choice, but not odd...and yet, is that a Vulcan name?

When he finishes, she makes a quick twitch of her lips, dismissing the issue of finding a billet.  "I expect I will be sharing quarters with one of the other medical staff," she notes.  At least, that was the situation on her last assignment - a trio of medical staff (the medical officer and two subordinates), each on-hand for a separate shift.  It's likely similar here, though possibly with two working each shift.

Bay doors open, under her watchful eyes.  Dark hair, characteristic features...this would be the counselor, then.  It's a surprise, however, to see the bright smile on her face; not precisely the norm for a Vulcan.  Be careful of bias, Azami, she reminds herself.  As the woman approaches, she identifies herself, and Azami immediately salutes.  "Lieutenant Commander," she returns.  "Petty Officer Amamiya Azami, reporting for duty."  All very proper, with neither 'military snap' nor a casual tone; it lies somewhere in the middle, factual and straightforward.  Salute complete, she offers a small bow, bending slightly at the hips with her palms on the front of her thighs.  "My thanks to you and the chief for your welcome."

[Oops! missed Tuesday post.]

Until the meeting with Decker, Tsolo works with members of the comm team. He explains his idea of interchangeable parts: That, in the nature of Starfleet, there is a chain of command, but that each member of the comm team should, as well as possible, be ready to fill any comm function. In that sense, all are equal and can learn from and teach to each other.

He reminds them that his Chaplain duties may cause him to be absent at times. In that case, LT Nipay is in charge.

Another small bow, ending with Azami looking up at her superior officer;  the Vulcan woman is a few inches taller than herself. "T'lara, then," Azami agrees.  Stiff formality will only make people more uncomfortable; better to to proceed with the wishes of each individual.  "I'm sorry to hear of your loss," Azami continues.  "I never met Dr. Abdool, but I hope his situation has improved."

The counselor, Azami notes with some curiosity, seems to be attempting a more casual familiarity; it's surprising, coming from a Vulcan.  Having a Vulcan Counselor is somewhat surprising as well, Azami concedes; the issue regarding validation of emotions might normally preclude such a posting for one of T'lara's species.  Not that it would be impossible, Azami muses, as Vulcans are not without emotions; merely...difficult, given the knid of controls their species places upon themselves.

One might wonder why a Vulcan would choose such a posting, such a calling.

"If it is not too informal, I see no need for any apology," she returns, with another small bow. "Your ship has clearly seen some difficult times."  There; an easy out for any possible awkwardness.  "If there is anything with which I might assist, please inform me; there is no real need for me to..." A small twitch pulls a grimace from her lips, there and gone in an instant. "...'settle in' at present."

The bright smile goes like smoke in a breeze, slowly vanishing from the counselor's features.  In moments they have become the Vulcan norm: stoic and serious.  It must have been something she said, Azami decides, rewinding her own words for closer examination.  In context.

Fool!

Mentally kicking herself, the young medic nods along with the T'Lara's words.  When she finishes, Azami takes a silent breath to prepare before responding.  "I would indeed enjoy a tour of the ship, when you have time.  If that would be now, I only need to drop this off."  A small movement indicates her bag.  "But first, I must apologize to both of you."

And now she does bow, holding it.

"I came here on assignment.  Upon sight of the ship's damage, I should have been cognizant of a possible reason for my orders; an assignment for me, yes, but to fill an empty place in your crew, a place once held by a friend you may have lost to whatever caused the damage.  It was insensitive of me to speak of it so casually."

And she straightens, meeting the eyes of first Chief Carter, then the Lieutenant Commander.  "And if that is the case, I am sorry for your loss."

"Best we t'honor the fallen is continue their work, and keep looking out for each other,"

Re: Repair & Resupply

Starbase 24
Commanding Officer's Office

Admiral Helon Chichester the IX sat behind his desk, absently toying with a model of an early-model starship... a Marklin-class destroyer... and staring at the glowing monitor before him, the blue light from the screen a stark contrast in the darkened office.

The door buzzed, and he put the model down.

"Come," he said, the Tennessee twang ringing in his voice.

Dr. Ranse Layne entered his old friend's office...

"Doc," Chichester smiled, indicating the seat opposite his desk.  "Grab a chair.  Let's talk."

"Let's start with why you want this assignment, after all these years... at your age... OUR age."

Re: Repair & Resupply

In reply to ADM Helon Chichester IX (msg # 62):

Tall and lanky, Ranse has hair that has started to grey, but his step is still lively, and his eyes still sharp.

He smiles at the sight of his old comrade. Helon had risen quickly thru the ranks, he always had that magical triad, daring, cunning and luck. Even when they were both still cadets at the academy Ranse knew Helon was destined for bigger and better things.

"Thank you sir," Ranse said, always a stickler for form and the chain of command.

He took a seat, back straight, feet together. Helon knew better than to tell the doctor to relax; while in uniform, this was how Ranse was most relaxed. It was an effort for him to loosen up when on the clock.

Not that the two of them hadn't loosed up when off the clock, a memory that simultaneously made both men smile.

"Perhaps for the same reason you turned down a posting on Earth when they decommissioned the Indomitable, sir?"

Ranse hadn't served with the ADM on that ship, but they both knew the fastest track upwards at this point in his career would have been an office at one of Star fleets main locations. Starbase 24 wasn't 'punishment' but it wasn't the place 25, or even 30 year old Helon would have chosen.

The Admiral's eyebrow lifted at the reference, but one of things that defined Ranse, and that Helon most relied on in his old friend, was his honesty.

"Not ready to give up the adventure, eh old friend?"

Ranse nodded in agreement. "Our adventures are very different, you were always a warrior and a diplomat. In more dangerous times Star Fleet would never waste your skills here, Admiral.
Nothing against your fine base, and I am certain you run this place very well, but with your skill set  and experience you could be doing so much more.
It's different for me, they would put me in the labs, my work would be valuable but not noteworthy. And I would shrivel up and die. I have no family, no home life and no love of big cities.
I could retire to the colonies, birth babies and cure local diseases.
But my family has always been my crew mates, and my home, on board a ship. I first stepped aboard the Horizon, I knew I never wanted to live any other kind of life."

Helon had shared a cabin with him on that first cruise. They had bonded then, and been close ever since, no matter how many light years came between them...

T’Lara nodded in agreement with the chief.

“Azami, you’ve been nothing if not kind and considerate.  We’re fortunate to have you onboard.”

T’Lara considered compassion and empathy to be a vital component of medicine.  It was the foundation on which the entire practice was built upon; being sensitive to another’s suffering, and be willing to help alleviate it.   Azami displayed all those qualities in the span of this short conversation alone.  T’Lara was sure that she would do well in their chosen profession; her praise was genuine.

“Let me show you to your quarters, and then the tour I promised you.  No time like the present, right?”

Having done everything he could, for the moment, Decker grabbed a quick meal and then headed off to check up on his department. He stopped by the primary computer complex and made sure that the routine computer updates were going smoothly and then went up to the bridge to check on the status of the exterior sensor repairs and made a few recommendations a requests to the engineering team working outside the ship.

The old Admiral regarded his longtime comrade for a long moment, sitting back in his chair before he steepled his fingers.

"You know me," he said finally.  "I'd never take a desk job at the hind end of space.  There's more to Starbase 24 than you know.  And the Independence's mission.  We're on the hub of explored space and we're learning new things all the time... racing with the Klingons and Romulans to make discoveries before they do."

Re: Repair & Resupply

A chuckle escaped the thin lips of the good Doctor.

"Safer has never been goal, you've traveled far with me old friend, and you have access, full access to my files now I assume. My gifts were only really brought to light when out in the world exploring, and danger has even enhanced them on occasion."

There were still things in his file that were considered highly classified. If Helon hadn't delved into his history yet, he will be in for a bit of a shock when he does. To the best of his knowledge, Omicron Ceti VII was still a proscribed world. He still had bizarre dreams of his time there. Maybe when this mission was over, he would put in a request to return.

"I am curious to see what Starbase 24 is up to though, I hope whatever happens, whenever it happens, it is within the limits of my security clearance."

He knew the admiral well enough to know what would come next, and there was no one else with whom he would break that particular regulation for.

Rising he headed over to the chest high cabinet on the way, and reached underneath to flip the switch that had been built into it. The front opened up smoothly to reveal a full bar.

There was never anything false between these two friends, not even synthehol.

The doctor poured two Aldebaran whiskies, two fingers each, the bright green fluid almost glowing even int he well lit room.

He turned to find the Admiral had already popped open his mini-fridge to pull out two chilled blood red Gorlocian Melon balls. He plopped one into each glass, then took his own.

"For medicinal purposes only, of course," Ranse said. Tapping rims together, they chuckled, and took a sip before returning to their chairs...

Relief, as both the chief and counselor chime in with sincerity; she hasn't offended.  Certainly it had been possible, and a poor beginning to any relationship...as well as poor appreciation for those who gave their lives in service.  "Thank you both," Azami replies, her her gaze shifting to rove, seeming randomly, about the cargo hold.  "I, myself, am grateful for your understanding."

Carry-on shouldered, she offers Chief Carter a salute.  "My thanks, chief, for your assistance.  I am certain to see you around." Turning to the counselor, Azami inclines her head in agreement.  "As you say, ma'am."  No time like the present, for the present is all they have.  "The tour would be welcome, as I have no experience on a ship this size.  I'm sorry to say my medbays before now have been planet-side.  Or on a starbase.    That small smile passes over her lips again, appearing and fading in a heartbeat.  "I'd like to be fully familiar with the Independence; better that than embarrassing myself."

Or failing to be in the proper place at the correct time during an emergency.

"An Andoraian?" Ranse replied, pleased at the thought. "An honorable people, though eager to pull the trigger. I have worked with a few, but never served under one, this will be an interesting experience, I have no doubt."

He admired the glass for a moment, or perhaps the beverage within. He took the last swallow, then fished out the melon and took a bite. The sharp aroma filled the air for a moment, a pleasure for the senses. He popped the last bit in his mouth and chewed it slowly.

"I had the pleasure of meeting an Aenar once, he seemed to find my  mind... interesting. They seem a wise people perhaps more level headed that their more common blue-skinned kin. The Federation is lucky to include them."

He placed his glass down on the desk, and resettled in his chair, as if settling back within the more normal bounds of protocol.

"So, any sealed orders for me, or secrets not meant for mortal man?" His tight smile spoke of their shared love of horror fiction from the past. "If not, I should probably get myself piped aboard and settle in. You know it takes me awhile to get the office to my standards." Dr. Layne was known to be a strict officer, but his professionalism was beyond reproach. His knowledge base wide enough to have been published numerous times, and deep enough to have saved a few lives in his day.

Re: Repair & Resupply

ch’Pertha noted down Vex for ‘Personnel Relations’.
That was a significant duty, so in discussion with her, he took much of the Starfleet beureacracy into his portfolio.   From there, the two divided up the rest of the duties pretty evenly between them.

Once they were done, he seemed interested in discussing any perceived issues they shared regarding crew:  but as Vex was new on board, and hadn’t likely found time to even preview files or recent incident reports, he asked her to get back to him on that when she felt comfortable.

They discussed priority for maintenance: especially with their current docking schedule.
ch’Pertha had taken ‘maintainence issues’ into his duty portfolio, so it’d be his responsibility to ensure ongoing matters once they left space dock ... but Vex needed to be kept briefed regardless.

Once all the ‘shop talk’ was done, he asked her, “Now, is there anything you feel we need to discuss?
She’d been very patient and co-operative as he’d worked them through all the agenda items he’d had, and he didn’t want to dismiss her before giving her a chance to discuss anything of import on her mind.
... anything at all? even if it was on a more personal level.

Re: Repair & Resupply

Another smile from the counselor, if less of a brilliant one - this one more familiar, less brilliantly welcoming.  It speaks volumes, Azami muses; either this Vulcan has practiced multiple expressions for different situations, or T'Lara is considerably more emotive than the other Vulcans the petty officer has met.  Granted, that number wouldn't be considered a fair sampling of the populace, but Azami knows the Vulcan disposition from her own studies.

Not just from 'well, everyone knows that'; Azami is fully aware that what 'everyone knows' about different races is often grossly incorrect...offensively so.

It makes for an intriguing puzzle, something for her to ponder, or to ask the counselor about (should she find some way to avoid rudeness)...another time.  For now, her superior officer leads Azami on a tour, and that should occupy her full attention.  A twitch of the corners of her mouth heralds the brief appearance of her own small smile, once again evaporating into a serious expression.  "I have no issues with sharing a room," Azami assures her superior.  "I am accustomed to it; during my last assignment, I bunked with five others.  I had rather imagined I would end up sharing with the others from the medical wing, what with the various shifts, but whatever I have been assigned will be more than sufficient."

Keeping her bag slung, she waits for the counselor to access the information; it's possible that Azami herself isn't even cleared yet.

OOC - Azami being a petty officer, she's not even a 'junior officer' by Starfleet standards - she's enlisted. Shocking, but I just looked up the ranks on Memory Alpha (I had to, I was unsure myself!).  Going by blueprints of a Miranda-Class vessel I've found, it looks like she'll be in a room with a whole bunch of other people (like, minimum 11).

Decker responded that he believed it would be most appropriate if this meeting was just between the two of them. He arrived promptly as scheduled with a field bag slung over his shoulder.

"Thank you for seeing me promptly and privately, sir. It's possible I'm making too much of this, but coming from Security, I think you'll appreciate my concerns. He sat in the seat indicated and placed the bag on the floor next to him. "In short, sir, with Lieutenant Commander T'Lara and Lieutenant Saghalie's assistance, I was able to decode a good amount of data that I downloaded from the artifact's computer. It wasn't a one-of-a-kind. And, sir...there appears to be at least one in Klingon space, and another in Romulan space. Artifacts similar, if not the same, to what we just encountered."

He paused and looked at the Captain expectantly.

“Our enlisted quarters accommodate between twelve to eighteen” perfectly manicured fingers hovered over the computer panel “But the quarters are used almost exclusively for sleeping.  There’s plenty else to be, and do, while you are off shift” she tried to sweeten the pill of being forced to share a room with so many other people.  She knew how being deprived of privacy was a constant source of stress, especially on prolonged missions.

“Hah! Found you.  Deck 6, room P3. Across the Arboretum” she turned back toward Azami and gave her a brief nod “We won’t be using the turbolift after all; your quarters are right around this corner”  Literally. ‘Her’ room was barely a hundred feet away from the portside entrance to shuttle bay.

“Where were you stationed, before being transferred to the Independence?”

She started probing the young woman on their way over “Did you request for the transfer, or did Starfleet decide you were needed here most?”

Re: Repair & Resupply

She can’t help but be impressed by the counselor’s poise, and her clear attempts to make the best of what she, herself, no-doubt considers a difficult situation.  Azami has been dealing with the multiple bunkmates for her entire life in Starfleet – it can, of course, become difficult at times, and she appreciates the understanding.  But it’s part and parcel of where Azami works, and one of the challenges she has accepted as part of her lot in life.

One of several.

About to speak in reply, she cuts herself off when T’Lara locates her quarters.  Across from the arboretum?  She had not been aware that the ship carried such a feature.  But then, Azami considers, she has never served on a ship nearly this size.  Deck six?  Of how many?  “A lucky placement,” she admits.  “I expect I will spend some of my time off enjoying the neighbourhood.”  So to speak; truth be told, though, she finds herself relieved at the idea of a greenspace so close and available.  Probably crowded, of course; with over two hundred crew members aboard, even if the novelty wears off there will always be visitors.  No privacy there, either.  Not so important, Azami decides; her spare time is likely to be taken up by light duty and volunteer work, in any case.

There is always room for volunteer work.

And they’re away, heading toward the room itself, skipping the turbolift as unnecessary.  Azami uses this short walk to study the corridor.  Spacious, open, clean and bright, with crew visible moving in the distance.  Always daytime aboard a vessel, she reminds herself, and always people awake: carrying out tasks, taking their leisure, filling their bellies.  This is, in essence, a floating community that never truly sleeps, a drifting town in the middle of an icy, barren sea.  Sometimes it chills her, the void only a stone’s throw away; born and raised planetside, the petty officer wonders if she will ever become fully accustomed to her proximity to lethal emptiness.

Questions float her way, delivered in T’Lara’s warm tones.

“Starbase 73, ma’am,” she replies to the first, “close to the centre of Federation space.  It was a quiet posting.”  ‘Safe and bustling’ might describe the aging Starbase, a port mostly for civilians and trade.  It had not been the best possible place for Azami, for a variety of reasons, and she had kept mostly to herself.  That had proven advantageous; no metaphorical strings to snip when she had received her new orders.  “I had received orders to transfer to this Starbase,” she admits, “but while en route, I received a message that the destination had changed to this vessel.”  That trails off almost into a question.  “There was a need; I was already on the way, but not yet attached to the Starbase administration,” she concludes.

Possibly some of the notes in her file helped with that decision.

That second question, though…while she has covered the potential reason for her arrive aboard the Independence, Azami knows the other woman is searching for motivation, which would include her original reason for leaving Starbase 73.   ”The decision to transfer me to this Starbase, however, was not my own, nor did I request such,” she clarifies, voice still mild and even.  ”Starbase 73 met my needs, but I go where the Federation requires, ma’am.”  It occurs to her that T’Lara might take that as some form of oblique criticism or disappointment regarding the current posting; best to correct that before the idea sinks in roots.  ”I am, of course, happy to serve here as well, and will endeavor to do my best.”

Her gaze flickers to the other woman’s face for an instant; there, then away like darting dragonfly, continuing its unfocused roving about the corridor.  “And yourself, ma’am?  If I might ask, did you request your position on this ship, or were you assigned?”

Decker frowned slightly. This was not going the way he expected.

"Commander, the artifact we boarded was in a state of disrepair, but it was perfectly functional and only collapsed due to our sabotage. It's quite possible that these artifacts in Klingon or Romulan space are functional as well, and there's no reason to think they'd be any less capable of taking control of them than we, by which I mean Dr. T'Lah, were."

He took a deep breath, "Surely our first priority at this point is to minimize any chance that they discover these artifacts, if they haven't already, and that means minimizing the number of people who are aware of them at all. I'm not concerned about Romulan agents stalking the corridors of Independence, but information has a way of leaking out. Isn't a certain amount of caution called for?"

Re: Repair & Resupply

“I hope you will have plenty of time to do so” she wished it not only for Azami’s sake, but also because her having time to enjoy the arboretum (or any other recreational activity) would imply that there weren’t any pressing medical emergencies forcing her to work extended shifts.  And that would be the best for everyone.

The corridor they’ve stepped into was only slightly less busy than the shuttle bay.  Most of the enlisted personal were quartered on Deck 6, which also housed the theater, the mess hall, and the previously mentioned arboretum.   There were always people up and about, and T’Lara, who was on first-name basis with half the crew, found it difficult to walk ten feet forward without stopping to say ‘hello’ to one of her colleagues.   She managed with a couple of nods, and one polite smile, preferring to give Azami her outmost attention.

She had, of course, no idea where star base 73 was located, and whether it was a planetside facility or a space station.  She’ll look it up later, she decided, rather than interrupt Azami’s flow with yet another question.

“Oh, I always wanted to serve onboard a starship, ever since I was a little girl” her voice carried a touch of excitement, all too happy to satisfy Azami's own curiosity 'to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations'  she quoted right out of Starfleet charter "This is why I joined Starfleet to begin with.  After I graduated from the academy, I requested to be assigned to a deep space exploration vessel.  So here I am”   she stopped right in front of the doors to room P3  "-and here you are"

Re: Repair & Resupply

Certain the counselor is well-known, and clearly liked by most - if not all - of the crew they pass.  A good thing; Azami would be worried were this not the case.  A good thing for other reasons; it allows Azami to slide into the background, to ease herself into the ship without a great deal of attention being paid to a new face.  T'Lara occupies that attention at the moment, and for that the petty officer is grateful.

Best not to be the centre of attention.

T'Lara's explanation of her quest for adventure garner her another brief, direct look from the shorter woman, Azami's eyebrows slightly raised.  Definitely the most expressive Vulcan she has ever met.  "You seem to have fulfilled your dreams."  The corners of her mouth twitch briefly.  "I hope they have proven to be everything you have desired, ma'am."

No doubt they have come with some less-desired aspects as well; the shadows of damage on the hull, the shadows of loss on T'Lara's face, both speak volumes.

Turning, she faces the door.  Her shared room.  A frown dances on Azami's lips for an instant, before the young woman returns her attention to the counselor. "Did you intend to continue the tour, ma'am?  If you have tasks requiring attention, I understand." T'Lara is an officer, after all, and certainly there will be enlisted who can assist Azami if necessary.  "If not, I might simply drop this off..."  That said with a motion of her carry-on toward the door.  A small shrug follows.  "If we begin the tour from here, it becomes my starting point to understanding."

Understanding more than the ship; there are more questions Azami would like to ask, should the officer have the time.

As for the XO or anyone else aboard, I suggest that the best reason not to share it with them is that there is absolutely no reason they need to know at the moment. If Starfleet Command decides that we'll have some further role to play, well...that would be different. In any case, it is of course your call, sir. But I wanted to make sure that it WAS your call, and not to disclose to anyone else myself. Sir."

He leaned back slightly in his seat and gestured to the field bag beside him. "This contains all the records of the recordings and our translations."

ch'Pertha nodded, "I understand.   And I can respect that position".
The man was following the chain of command, admirably.
And it was, indeed, ch'Pertha's choice from here.

"Is that information ready for transmission to Starfleet Command?

And while I respect you're thoughts on 'need to know', I am going to have a Command Meeting on this issue.
Myself and our XO.   Yourself, Lieutenant Commander T'Lara and Lieutenant Saghalie.
Lt Harada, I want her studying what blueprints you were able to find, along with the rest of you.   Between you all, we'll have the best chance for preparation.
And Dr Layne.

Can you have an appropriate briefing and presentation ready for us in 48 hours from now, Ltn Commander?  or do you need some more time?

OOC note:    I do not need us to roleplay this meeting/debrief.   Just that it will happen in the narrative.

Beyond that, aboard the Indy, ch’Pertha wants Decker, T’Lara, Saghie and Hanara on this ongoing project.

Re: Repair & Resupply

D'rala contributed her thoughts to the sorting of duties when appropriate, otherwise listening to ch'Pertha as she sought to gain a greater understanding of her new Commanding Officer. It had been a few years since a change in her direct superior. She'd grown quite attached to Commander T'Lah, but the Vulcan woman had certainly not been as ready to grace her with the likes of a smile as Commander ch'Pertha appeared to be. She'd respected his actions aboard the artifact, and the addition of geniality was a welcome one.

D'rala paused for a moment at ch'Pertha's question before deciding to barrel ahead.

"Yes, in fact. I would just like to tell you that I'll take great care with your people," she said, letting out a deep breath. "I know the situation you found me in, and what happened to most of my team, may inspire doubts, but I'll never let something like that befall people under my command again."

Decker took a measured breath and straightened up, not just his posture but his expression, which became carefully neutral. He appeared to consider for a moment, then nodded. "Of course, sir. That will be more than sufficient time. And yes, these materials are ready for transmission." He picked up the bag and leaned over to offer it to the Captain.

T’Lara nodded in response.  The assignment on the Independence was everything she could have hoped for.  They’ve already accomplished so much in such a short time; saving an enitre planet from a virulent disease, preventing the murder of billions of Klingons.  All the new friends she has made, the people she met.  If only it all didn’t come with such a terrible cost…

”Oh, I have an hour or two to spare” she reassured Azami, and followed with a smile ”And like I mentioned earlier; meeting new people is why I joined Starfleet to begin with.  You wouldn’t deny me the pleasure, would you?”

Re: Repair & Resupply

It appears the Lieutenant Commander is more than comfortable in her current position.  Azami files that away, but it’s a positive note in a positive conversation, more than simple information.  When the Vulcan woman indicates her interest in continuing the tour, the petty officer inclines her head slightly in agreement.  “I try to avoid denying others their wishes,” she notes, one corner of her mouth quirking upward for a moment.  “A moment, then?”  That said, she enters the crew quarters in haste.  Luck seems to be with her – there are a few sleeping forms in the bunks, but nobody awake and aware, so Azami merely places her carry-on inside the doorway and retreats from the room, post-haste.

Relieved, she shakes out her shoulders and rakes fingers through the tail of her hair before turning back to the counselor.  “Done.”  Her lips shift, this time into a momentary moue as thoughts pass through her mind.  “This is a novel experience…after you, ma’am.”  Indicating the corridor, she waits for them to begin walking again before continuing.

“Having a Lieutenant Commander give me a tour is a first,” Azami admits, to clarify.  Most often, it’s another crewmate, usually one of the medical staff.   Azami would place good money on the counselor knowing each and every crewmember by face, name, and likely some personal details…were she the betting kind of person.  A sidelong glance takes in the taller woman’s hands, their carefully curated nails noted earlier.  She is meticulous with her appearance, despite the demands of duties.  Understandable; T’Lara’s position demands a certain level of care in her appearance.  But the level of that care, the attention to detail, speaks something about the woman’s character.  Difficult to judge at the moment, but perhaps ‘no job is worth doing halfway.’  Perhaps because she lives her dream?  Azami can certainly understand the perspective, though her own motivations for being meticulous are likely different from from T’Lara’s.

Very different.

“And not the only first.”  Her head cocks to the side as she walks, her gait smooth and even, her gaze continuing to drift.  “I have not met a Vulcan so expressive, Lieutenant Commander T’Lara.”  Her lips thin.  “Hopefully my observation is not offensive; if so, I apologize.”  Given T’Lara’s seemingly open and frank nature, Azami doubts it will be taken so…but one never knows, and politeness costs nothing.

The last thing she wishes to do is alienate any member of the crew.

Re: Repair & Resupply

T’Lara had a moment to gather her thoughts as Azami entered her new quarters.  There was something about the young field medic that seemed off to her.  It was hard to put her finger on it.  Likely it had to do with the contrast between Azami’s discipline, levelheadedness and attention to details to the way she came to be assigned to the Independence.  T'Lara couldn’t believe that the thoughtful woman standing in front of her wouldn’t show the same meticulous consideration toward the advancement of her career, would allow Starfleet to direct her whichever way they desired as if she was a leaf caught in the wind.   It just didn’t make sense.   Add to that the fact that Starfleet saw fit to transfer a junior field medic halfway across the quadrant, and Azami started to read like a character from one of her father’s spy novels.

That’s ludicrous.  She stopped the train of thought in her mind.  Here you go again, T’Lara.  That overactive imagination of yours.

Still…

When Azami returned, so did a sly smile to T’Lara’s lips.  The fact that she couldn’t quite figure the young woman out made talking with her so much more fun.  She wondered if she would be able to unravel the mystery by the time the tour was over.  Or if not, at least stop her from calling her ‘ma’am’.

The botanical garden was only a step away, so it made sense to start their tour there.    The first and foremost purpose of the arboretum was scientific; a living collection of plant life from across the galaxy, carefully preserved until such time as the Independent completes its mission. That the crewmen found the stay in garden relaxing was a useful side effect.   Because it was an eclectic assortment of plant life gathered from several different biodomes, there was little consideration to aesthetics, neither in the selection or placement of the trees and flowers.  Nonetheless, the stunning variety of shapes and colors (and fragrance) overwhelmed the senses just as much as the most carefully landscaped garden.

T’Lara stood quietly by the entrance for just a moment, allowing Azami to get her first impression, before they would walk inside for a leisurely stroll.

“It’s good we made it here now.  They’re going to move half the specimen to the star base by the time the day is over.  Make some room” she called into attention the couple of blue shirted botanists from the science department, busy carefully transplanting the seedlings.

Azami’s question about T’Lara demeanor, when it finally arrived, was not unanticipated.  She knew she behaved very differently from what most people came to expect of Vulcans.  She didn’t mind sharing her story, which she has done many times before:

“There is a simple explanation to that; both my parents were banished from Vulcan before I was born.  I grew up on a remote space station, far away from Vulcan both spatially and culturally.”

Re: Repair & Resupply

Another smile from the counselor for Azami’s mental file, this one carrying a fox’s edge, clever and secretive.  She wonders at that for a heartbeat; did her queries spark that particular cast to the grin?  Or was it her answers?  Something in her movements, or face perhaps (which Azami herself would well-understand)?  Or is it a passing thought, with nothing to do with the petty officer at all?  But their tour continues without a hiccup, and the petty officer sets her curiosity aside for the moment.  It is an odd thing, though, to read so much from a Vulcan, normally obdurate walls with only a few cracks to peer through.

Those ponderings, though, are swept from Azami’s mind when they enter the garden.

She isn’t quite certain what she expected, but this certainly is not it.  At first glance, open area seems nearly natural in its cluttered lack of organization.  But after a moment’s perusal, the true chaos becomes clear; even nature has its patterns, and this garden follows few of them.  Gathered plants are placed nearly willy-nilly, likely to take best advantage of space rather than provide aesthetic appeal.   The scents mingle into a melody, rather than remaining segregated in their own small territories of the garden.  Broad, flat leaves war with spiny, jagged ones for the light.  Grasses here, a moss there, and…some kind of lichen?  And all through it move the blue-shirted attendants, gently caring for their verdant charges.  This is no tranquil, meditative garden; it is instead a silent riot for the eyes and nose, a floral fireworks display on a many-textured backdrop.  Blinking, Azami turns in a semi-circle, nodding along with T’Lara’s point regarding their good fortune.

”I am glad to have this opportunity be my first glimpse, ma’am,” she quietly states.  ”Had I come later, I might never have guessed how beautiful it had been.

Then T’Lara speaks of her past, and Azami loses interest the garden’s splendor, shunting it into the background as she focuses her gaze on the counselor.

Her parents had been exiled?  So many questions, with ‘why’ being first, foremost, and utterly impossible to ask; she barely knows the Lieutenant Commander, and prying into a potentially painful past would be unacceptable.  Instead, Azami nods her head once.  ”That…would explain a great deal,” she gravely admits, her face placid.  Inside, though, the young woman ferociously kicks herself, over and over again.  Idiot! Fool twice over!  Clamping down on her self-directed annoyance, she offers a small bow again.   “I should have known it would be a private matter; I allowed curiosity to overtake good sense, ma’am.  I will only say I hope your situation does not cause you grief or issue in your present circumstances.”

There’s almost no doubt her parents’ exile has impacted T’Lara’s life; how, Azami cannot begin to guess, but growing up outside one’s culture, struggling to adapt to a place where everyone looks, acts, IS different than oneself, and potentially being reminded of that fact every day by people less cruel than simply inconsiderate – and likely the opposite as well – would crack the ground beneath most people’s feet.  Azami knows this, all-too-well; her situation is rather different than T’Lara’s own, but if one peers hard enough, one can find similarities between the two without resorting to a microscope.  But still…did T’Lara face bias and prejudice from other Vulcans?  How did they treat her – quick to judge, condescendingly, or something even worse?  Or better, with fairness?  Did humans expect one thing – as Azami had – and become uncomfortable when faced with something different?  Azami hoped she, herself, had not; the differences between T’Lara and the other Vulcans of her acquaintance had been clear, but had not disturbed her in any way.

Her own reaction to a possible faux pas in asking, that is a different matter.

The Independence had settled firmly into dock, and the supply train of cargo pods were doing their duty.  Repair bees were already doing a cursory scan of the hull.

Meetings were had amongst the command staff, and secrets were shared (see ch'Pertha and Decker's posts, above).  Ultimately facts were relayed to Starfleet Command.  What they would DO with these facts might take a while to materialize... if ever.

In one of the shuttlebays for Starbase 24, DR Ranse Layne and LT Jori sh'renmaa queued up for a ride over to their new command, meeting each other for the first time...

Re: Repair & Resupply

With a curt nod to the Lieutenant, the Doctor found his seat and and sat rigidly, hands at his sides. staring ahead, his mind focused on the new assignment. He had been on enough new ships to know what to expect, personalities he would rub the wrong way, situations that rubbed him the wrong way. He had a way he liked to see things done, by the book, and he had never found a new position that didn't take some effort to adjust to.

He was glad that he wasn't in the chain of command though, and sitting at the top of his own department. The never-ending conflict among those who sought promotion was something he was glad to be free of.

As the shuttle separated from the Starbase, he let out a deep breath, and turned to greet his neighbor.

"So, returning from leave Lieutenant, or is this a new assignment for you? This is my first day here."

While he did not know the young lady, his own sense of propriety and chain of command meant that the senior officer should chose to start a conversation or not, but he also knew there were expectations. He also worried that if he didn't start, she would start a conversation, better to simply avoid that risk.

“What? No!” T’Lara chuckled “It’s nothing like that.  I had the best childhood anyone could hope for.  I might not have been raised like a proper Vulcan, but that’s true for most denizens of the galaxy, also”

T’Lara almost never had an issue with defying expectations, apart from being a curiosity.  As for fitting in – it would have been harder, she imagined, to do so as an emotionally repressed Vulcan.   Most crewmembers onboard the Independence were NOT Vulcans, after all.

Re: Repair & Resupply

Relief spikes deeply at T'Lara's amusement, and even moreso at her words.  Azami hasn't offended; better still, T'Lara has no regrets, her childhood clearly without wounds...at least from that particular separation.  Azami watches her face as she speaks, searching for shadows that might imply hidden pain, but sees none.  Not that it means anything; she's no savant, capable of seeing through to the core of a person with a simple glance, but still, it relieves her.  Automatically, her mind also notes the movements of T'Lara's body as she talks, sorting them into the 'Vulcan' file as an outlier, yes, but still within racial possibilities.  Realizing this, the young petty officer feels a twinge of annoyance at her own habits and forcibly returns her gaze back to the flowers of the garden, just as T'Lara's last words roll in.

"...a playful pointy-eared girl was the last thing that seemed out of place."

Turned slightly away from T'Lara, Azami twitches once, her grey eyes gone glassy.  The reek of burnt copper fills her nostrils, overpowering the scent of the foliage about her.  Abruptly she leans forward to delicately touch her nose to a flower, drawing in a deep breath of the heady perfume, an almost butterscotch sweetness.  It's no use; the rank, metallic odour is a memory, one no so easily dispelled.

Her own smile is bright, if short-lived, as Azami turns back to the Lieutenant Commander.  "An interesting picture you paint, ma'am.  I would enjoy seeing holos of your childhood, if that's not too impertinent."  The idea of T'Lara having a joyful childhood, and no regrets, pushes the old memory to a distant place, and this time her expression does not fully fade, leaving an echo of the smile at the corners of her eyes and mouth.  "You've been in space all of your life, then - and connected to Starfleet as well.  Small wonder this is a dream come true."

Her eyes narrow slightly, a considering expression, and curiosity prods another question from Azami.  "Did you ever visit Vulcan, if I might ask?  Or do you feel no need?"

Re: Repair & Resupply

Azami seemed like a very private person, which is why T’Lara avoided from prying into her past till now.  She sensed that there was something bothering her.  But whether she was suppressing a painful memory, or a sneeze, she wasn’t entirely sure (standing so close to the blossoming flowers did suggest the latter).  Just in case, she decided it was best to be patient, and allow her to open up whenever she felt like.

“I’ve never been to Vulcan, though I’d like to, one day – if they’ll allow me”  she answered Azami’s faint smile with a soft one of her own, and quickly followed up with an explanation:

“My parents have chosen to embrace their emotions, rather than suppressing them.  They were exiled when they encouraged others to do the same.  Seeing that I am essentially a living-breathing argument against Vulcan philosophy, I am not sure they would accept me any more than they would welcome back my parents.  Or more precisely – the path they have chosen”

It wasn’t something she dwelled upon.  She couldn’t exactly miss Vulcan, if she never set foot there.

Re: Repair & Resupply

Jori was the first to board the shuttle heading to the Independence, her new assignment. She had been on Starbase 24 two days, and she had become impatient waiting. When the starship finally arrived, she was more than ready.

In her seat, she was reading a PADD that contained the files of the command crew, senior staff, and department heads. She had lost track of how many times she'd read the files, but it was to the point of having them almost fully memorized. As the new chief of security, it was important for her to learn their strengths and weaknesses.

Just before the pilot announced they were leaving, a Human man with a medical insignia on his uniform, sat in the seat next to her, nodding as he did. She recognized that it was the new chief medical officer, Doctor Ranse Layne.

Returning the quick nod, Jori went back to her PADD.

A few minutes passed and as the shuttle left the bay, the doctor spoke.

"So, returning from leave, Lieutenant, or is this a new assignment for you? This is my first day here."

Jori studied the man's face, her antennae slowly swaying. His file told her what kind of person he was, but when meeting someone for the first time, she wanted to make her own assessment.

"This is a new assignment for me as well, sir. I'm Lieutenant Jori sh'Renmaa, the new chief of security."

Direct and to the point, answering his question. Her antennae moved in slow circles.

Re: Repair & Resupply

An eyebrow raises, and Azumi purses her lips slightly as she considers T'Lara's explanation and supposition.  It is an interesting point, the idea that T'Lara herself is a proof against the claim that Vulcans needed their detachment, their logic.  As for acceptance, Azami will definitely defer to the counselor's thoughts on the matter.  Visiting the 'sins' of the parents - if one might call them such - upon the child seems grossly unfair.

Perhaps they would allow her to at least visit Vulcan, as they might any other Starfleet officer.

But that is a matter for conjecture, and Azami has no personal knowledge of Vulcan philosophy or politics outside what is taught in Starfleet.  Her knowledge is more medical, kinesthetic, than cultural. "I would hope they would...'allow' you to visit, rather than choose to exclude you completely." Furrows appear and dissolve on her forehead as she considers that insult and injury.  Finally Azami gives a faint shrug to indicate her opinion regarding such a decision on the part of the Vulcan people; fortunately, T'Lara seems resigned - or uncaring - of such a possibility.

"I have never heard of Vulcans choosing to, ah, 'embrace emotion' as you put it, ma'am," she continues.  "To go against their culture, the pressures of training and expectations."  Her voice tightens slightly, and her unfocused eyes sharpen. "Is there something that compelled them to follow this path?  An action?  An occurrence?  A tipping point?  Or was it simply within them?"

A muscle in her jaw twitches, then Azami blinks, rolling her shoulders, the intensity in her eyes fading.  "It is a...personal question, counselor," she admits, abandoning the ranking structure for a title of greater respect.  "I seem to be crossing many lines, today."

Re: Repair & Resupply

“T’Lara, please”

The conversation did turn a bit personal, especially since the two women have only met fifteen minutes prior.  It didn't inconvenience T’Lara none, however,  only serving as a pretext to try to get Azami to call her by her given name.

“And it’s fine, really.  There’s nothing embarrassing or discomforting about the story.  My parents simply fell in love with each other.  My mother had a 'much better’ marriage prospect, but she turned it down to elope with my father.  Extremely illogical, by Vulcan standards.  The passion they felt toward each other led them to question everything else they took for granted till that point of time, then one thing led to another…”

She smiled fondly as she recalled a pleasant memory

“You should see them.  I’ve never known any two people happier in each other’s company ”

T’Lara realized how hard it must have been for her parents to be rejected by everyone they ever knew.  Their own parents and family members included.  They rarely talked about their lives prior to being exiled from Vulcan, suggesting that there was still some lingering pain left unresolved.   She decided to omit that part entirely – like her mother often said, there was no point dwelling on the past.

“We should all be that lucky” she concluded the story, her eyes drifting away from Azami to take one last look at the garden.  There were some parallels to be made between the biodiversity of the arboretum and her own life; different flowers from entirely different planets, existing side by side.  But she was damned if she was going to make it.

“What do you say about moving on? There’s still a lot left to see”

Re: Repair & Resupply

A second request for the use of T’Lara’s name, and Azami takes note.  First time…could be a pleasantry, could be ‘automatic’.  Second time?  Not only is it almost positively genuine, but it would be rude, now, for Azami to continue to title the Vulcan woman.  I wonder.  Does she consider herself Vulcan?  Biologically speaking, yes, but from a cultural standpoint T’Lara is no more Vulcan than Azami, herself.  But it’s not her place to ask that question at the moment; it dances so far past ‘too personal’ that Azami feels she couldn’t see that particular line with the ship’s long-range sensors.  The explanation continues, the Lieutenant Commander fortunately taking no offence at her slightly-less-personal query, and another thoughtful moue slides across Azami’s lips.

Love: that everpresent driver.

”A beautiful story,” she muses.  Beautiful, and somewhat tragic…but a far better ending than it could have been.  Briefly, she wonders how much pain T’Lara’s parents have suffered from their choice.  Worse, clearly, had they taken the other, culturally appropriate path, and T’Lara herself would never have been born.  The regrets, Azami concludes, are likely slim to none; bittersweet rather than acidic, wistful over wishing.  ”Lucky, indeed.”  The counselor stares out over the flowers and foliage, and Azami wonders what she sees in the riot of colour.

And then it is time to move on.

”Of course, T’Lara.”  She tests the name; it’s a touch awkward for Azami, not because of pronunciation, but due to it being that of a high-ranking officer.  This is a first, but she’s determine to accept the other woman’s wishes.  ”And thank you again for assisting with this tour.  Where is next?” she inquires as the doors to the arboretum hiss close behind them.

Her stormcloud eyes take on an even more serious cast for a heartbeat.  ”And if I may…the damage to the ship.  An accident?  Or did you come under attack?”  Part personal, part professional, that question; as a member of the medical team, Azami would prefer to know if this ship is one earmarked for more dangerous missions, ones more likely to involve plasma and disruptor fire.

Granted, her security clearance is nearly non-existent.

DR Layne and LT sh'Renmaa arrived via shuttle, docking in Shuttle Bay 1.  The other shuttle bay was being used mostly for cargo, although some people - already enjoying a tour - had arrived with the cargo in Bay 2.

There was a combined sense of 'bustle' - as things were moving about - and 'fatigue' - as the crew had just returned from a hazardous mission.

D'rala race walked through the corridors and down the path to the shuttle bay. Breaking into a run, beside being against regulations, would cause a panic, so she stayed just shy of the pace. It wouldn't do to leave new Officers waiting about with no direction or assistance.

She slowed to a more average pace as she reached the entryway, smoothing down her jacket.

As she feared, the new Doctor was standing alone outside his shuttle, waiting.

"Commander Layne," D'rala called out and approached. "Apologies for the delay, Doctor. Welcome to the Independence. Lieutenant Commander D'rala Vex, Executive Officer." She offered a handshake in the interest of extending human courtesy.

"How was your journey here?"

Re: Repair & Resupply

"Ah, nice to meet you," the doctor responded, extending his own hand in reply. His grip was firm, and his gaze steady. "The journey was long and tedious, I was across the sector when I got the assignment. I had heard good things about the ship, however, and am eager to get started."

He has no baggage, trusting on Star Fleet to ship his belongings to his quarters.

Re: Repair & Resupply

D'rala offered a smile of welcome, and matched the firmness of his grip.  "Quite a trip you've been on then. Thank you for making the journey to join us."

"The crew's reputation is well deserved. It's a valiant group here. I'm a new addition as well, but I've seen action with them."

"If you wish to start familiarizing yourself right away, I could take you to Medical first, show you the work space. It would be understandable if you were too fatigued from your journey, of course. In which case I can show you the way to your rooms, and we can reconvene tomorrow."

Re: Repair & Resupply

"That would be appreciated. I would, of course, like a more complete tour eventually, but first things first, I want to be able to do my job, should anything come up."

If he is tired, he doesn't show it, though it could easily be the professional shell many old-timers in Star Fleet wear when on duty.

"Has the Captain left any instructions as to when he wants me to report to him? On a standard assignment I would do that before anything else, but given circumstance I imagine he is quite busy seeing to repairs and such."

Re: Repair & Resupply

Once the shuttle bay was pressurized, the pilot opened the hatch and Doctor Layne exited. Jori had a carry all, so she retrieved it, slung the strap over her shoulder, and headed out as well.

An Orion woman, Jori recognized her as the XO, was talking with Doctor Layne. Jori stood patiently on the ramp, waiting for when she could join them. When there was a break, she descended the rest of the way.

"Lieutenant Commander Vex, I'm Lieutenant Jori sh'Renmaa, the new chief of security." She offered the PADD she was holding. "These are my orders."

Re: Repair & Resupply

"Of course. The rest of our medical personnel will be eager to meet you."

"Not as of yet, but I'm sure he'll be contacting you shortly. If you need anything in the meantime, don't hesitate to approach me."

D'rala looked up at the sound of steps on the gangplank, to the sight of an Andorian Lieutenant who subsequently revealed herself to be the new CoS.

"Ah, welcome, Lieutenant sh'Renmaa. Good to have you aboard." She accepted the offered PADD, scanning the information quickly, before returning it.

"This is a new posting for me as well, as you might know," she said, offering a smile. Lt. sh'Renmaa seemed to have done her research: an asset in security personnel. "So I understand the run-around of getting acquainted to a new ship running active duty. As I told the Doctor, please don't hesitate to approach me if there's anything you need."

Re: Repair & Resupply

Startled at the approach of the Lieutenant, Dr. Layne wondered if only one person had been sent to welcome them both. Were they that short handed? He waited as XO sorted things out. He tried not to fidget.
