Chult: Port Nyanzaru

You arrive in the town of Nyanzaru at the end of a sudden rainstorm of the sort that seems to be common in jungle lands. The town sits in a small valley beside low mountains that are blanketed with dense jungle. From the look of it, Nyanzaru is a rough, bustling, frontier town filled with self-reliant people. Indeed, they pay little attention to you beyond a curt nod.

The heat and humidity are the first things you notice as you walk along this small seaside town. The sights, sounds and smells are all the same as any other port side town, only the people are different. Most of the natives are easy to pick out, partly by their odd clicking language, but mostly by the way they seem to take the heat in stride. There is also a large mix of outlanders, easily spotted by their dress and metal weapons. One of the largest buildings in town, other than the warehouses, is a curtained tavern busy even at this early hour of the day with patrons looking to avoid the heat.

{Make a spot check when you get into the area, two if you have arcane abilities and private message me when you get the results.}

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

Why Chult?

The question resounded within her mind once again, almost nagging her with its persistent presence. It wasn't as if she had nothing else to occupy her thoughts, what with the need for lodging and extra coin squarely at the top of her list. But even those considerations took backseat to the overwhelming blanket of heat that flooded her senses. It was like an over-stuffed backpack, pushing down on her from above with its oppressive weight and arrogant assertiveness. And it was a far cry from the climate of her homeland, though that thought was quickly pushed away. Taking a slow, deep breath to steady herself, Elsa once again banished the question with her only answer.

Why not Chult?

A place to loose oneself, a place where everyone was a stranger and no one had a history, a place where the clever could glean profit from the unwary. Chult was exactly the place for one like her. "But this heat," she considers to herself yet also slightly out loud, "this heat I did not expect." Deciding to find herself some relief and perhaps re-focus on more important issues, Elsa strolls quickly towards the tavern and steps through the doorway.

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

Entering the large front room of the tavern is like walking into a shaded paradise. The temprature barely drops, but it does drop...some. You are greeted upon entering by a chorus of noises, patrons laughing, drinking and eating. "Welcome, Welcome lady! I see you are new to town, just arrived have you? No no, don't look suprised, you have the look of a newcomer to our lands." you are greeted by the Innkeeper upon entering, he stands behind a large bar in the center of the floor, several girls wander the floor taking drinks and plates of cold breakfast to the men and women seated about the place. "I am Samier, and welcome to the Watering Hole. What can I offer you this morning? Food after your long journey? A drink? Perhaps a place to stay during your time her?"

Elsa pauses a moment, allowing the words of the innkeeper and the hustle of the room to register, and then replies with a shy smile. "Yes." Another moment is allowed to pass and then, with a playful toss of her hair, Elsa adds to her previous statement along with a light smile, "Samier, my wonderful man, I would partake of all three luxuries that the Watering Hole offers to guests. And then, perhaps a fourth?"

With a smile of his own, and a slight glint to his eye, the thin man with the pock scarred face informs you "We have several choices for rooms, from a place on the floor here in the common hall for 3 silver, to a shared room in the back with a mat to sleep on for 5 silver, or for a few silver more we have private rooms upstairs for a gold piece a night. For breakfast this morning you are in luck! we have fresh fruit from the main land as well as some local specialities and fresh water, or perhaps a nice wine for the lady?" he tells you by way of what is available. "As to the fourth service you require...I would be more than willing to help you with that." he says, his eyes roaming over your body, the suggestion obvious.

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

Sharing a room with strangers? Or a single room with a lock that is no doubt easily opened by the innkeep's key?

Elsa taps a delicate finger against her chin as if in deep thought; as if she hadn't had such a difficult decision to make in some time. Then, with a coy little smile, she replies, "Wine, of course, as long as its white and no more than slightly sweet. And a private room, my dear Samier." With a slight pout, she adds, "You wouldn't expect me to sleep on the floor, now would you? A simple maid like myself sleeping alone on the floor?"

As the innkeeper's eyes roam over her body, Elsa imperceptibly thrusts out her bosom a tiny bit more. "I am so happy to hear that you can help me, what with me being new to this town. What I require, good Samier, is what any newcomer might require from a well established businessman like yourself. Conversation." Then, with a smile that is anything but shy, she adds, "At least to start..."

[Private to DM FoxPaws: Elsa is most interested in information about the local merchants and artisans. Who they are, where they live, how many members are in their family/sevice, etc. Gather Information Check = 19.]

[Private to DM FoxPaws: EDIT - I didn't mean to imply that I don't want to roleplay the conversation. :)]

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

The time passes as Samier plies the young woman with wine and as much charm as he can muster. Telling her little things of this and that about the town that she has found herself in.

[Private to Elsa: There are few artists in town, most of the art works that come to town come from the jungle, masks, trinkets carved from rare woods or ivory. Gems and jewelry of the finest and rarest stones from the Jungle Dwarves are traded to ships captains to be sold in the north. Of the merchants in town the largest merchant in all of Chult is a man named Nsi, not a fellow to be crossed, he has amassed a fortune and has contacts all over the land, no one knows where he resides his agents bring in goods and what not that are shipped out all over the north. In town there are several minor merchants, most are the agents of rich men in Calisham. There is however a woman who runs a small shipping yard, a buyer of anything from Chult to Calisham and back again. Jaerlea an older woman who made her fortune running slaves from Calisham to Chult to clear the jungles towards the fabled mines of the land...she made a larger fortune keeping some of those gems that were returned to Calisham.

Deduct 2 gold for the room, and the wine.

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

Elsa gazes intently as the innkeeper relates what he knows of the town. As the conversation winds down, she slowly moves closer and closer to the man until not even the width of the bar separates them. She opens her mouth, perhaps to say something, perhaps for something else entirely. But then her hand reaches into her pouch and withdraws two coins. Placing them on the table, she whispers in his ear, "Your prices are rather high, master innkeeper, but mine is yet higher. Perhaps some other time..." Her lips brush his cheek ever so slightly as she leans back and then rises to her feet. In a normal tone, she calls over her shoulder as she walks towards the door, "Hold my room for me, good Samier. I shall return."

[Private to DM FoxPaws: Next stop is Jaerlea's shipping yard.]

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

The walk back to the docks is even hotter than you remember for your trip inland. The noonday sun beats down with no remorse baking the inhabitants under its rays. Once back at the docks its not hard to find Jaerlea's shipping yards, its is the only one that doesn't seem to have locals as dock workers.

From the streets you can see a smallish warehouse type building, behind that a large pen filled with men women and children the universal look of a slaves dispair evident on all of their faces as they gaze out at their guards from behind their pens.

There is only one ship at what appears to be a 3 ship dock extending out into the bay behind the warehouse and pen.

Elsa casually strolls forward and reaches the door of the warehouse. Acting unconcerned was rather difficult given the heat, but she shrugs aside the concern when she reaches her target. Opening the door slowly until it is a quarter open, she glances inside but doesn't actually enter.

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

Kuruk emerges from the jungles of Chult into the port town of Nyanzaru at a run. Close behind him is a constrictor snake of no small size, nipping at his heels. He turns to face behind him and shouts, "C'mon Mr. Snake, hurry up! He's gonna eat us." The snake is happy to obey, and soon the two are a fair distance from the overgrowth. They slowly come to a stop and turn back to look at their pursuer. But nothing emerges from the jungle.

"Hmmmm, I coulda swore that thing was gonna eat us both. Musta not been that hungry."

After catching his breath, Kuruk looks about his surroundings. After a moment he realizes where he is and why he is there. He gains his bearings and heads to the one of the larger buildings, which he hopes is the tavern.

To his credit, it is the tavern, which he enters. Once inside, he goes to sit in a corner both to first observe the patronage before starting to ask questions. "You stay here, Mr. Snake, you know how the people like it when you're around." He picks up the snake and directs him to the roof of the tavern, and Mr. Snake with a hiss, curls up around an outcropping to wait for his master to return.

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

....oh sweet merciful Tempus! surely there couldn't be anything else left in there to bring up? he thought sourly as he emptied the contents of his stomach for the third time since stepping onto the docks. He had assumed he would start to feel better when he got back onto dry land. He was wrong.
After wiping his mouth with the back of a leather gloved hand and flicking a few lumps of something or other from his beard he again drew himself up to his full height and took a look around him. The noise and smells of the bustling port were almost overwhelming after the long voyage and the whole place seemed as far removed from the snow covered peaks of home as he could possibly imagine.
....Still, some things are the same wherever you go he thought wryly as his gaze lingered on a young courtesan coyly lingering in a doorway over yonder. hmm... pretty, and nice eyes....but a little on the skinny side for my taste...
aha! something else he recognised -a tavern, just the thing to rinse his mouth out after this mornings 'adventures'.
Stepping into the blessed shade of the tavern and waving to a serving maid for ale he gladly slumps down into a chair and leans back, his eyes closed as he breathes in deeply in the opressive heat and takes a few moments to relax. Shortly he hears the serving maid return with his ale and he slowly opens his eyes and looks up into the rafters to see... " A SNAKE!" he shouts jumping instantly to his feet and pushing table, serving maid, drinks and all to safety
"Don't worry everyone, I'll get it!" he bellows, reaching for his axe....

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

[Private to Elsa: The sickening sweet smell of flowers and old wood almost overwhelms you as you peak into the hotbox of a warehouse. Not an overly large building you can almost see the back of it through the shadows of the windowless single windowless room. You see several forms moving about the back of the warehouse moving crates and large timbers to a central location for loading on the one remaining boat in dock. "Get those damn things in place, Sysirac, go get the slaves to load this, then get them loaded as well, I want to sail with the evening tide damnit! I don't want to have to feed that damn 'Protector' just for sailing out of my own berth if we can help it this time!" you hear bellowed from a large woman near the front of the warehouse. When she is done bellowing she turns to the crack of light spilling in through the door. "Well come in or get out whoever you are, we're not taking passengers on this run though, I don't care who you are."]

Sitting in the relative coolness of the Watering Hole Kuruk doesn't notice as Mr. Snake makes a silent trip into the tavern to slither along the rafters to be closer to his friend and companion.

As Kuruk walks into the tavern Samier calls a quick greeting to him before making a slithering motion with his hand and raising his eyebrow...quietly asking if the Half-Orc has left his large friend at home today so as not to alarm his other...better paying...clients.

Everyone can't help but lookup and smirk at the large northman that enters the curtained coolness of the outer tavern. His large frame covered in a heavy, and very hot, set of armor. "My friend, please take that silly thing off before you make us all hot!" the innkeeper says to his latest customer good naturedly. "Come in, come in! Welcome to the Watering Hole, I am Samier, please let me get you something to cool yourself with?" the way he says it makes it more of a question than a statement.

"A SNAKE!" the Northman yells out as he rushes head long towards the large beast, and straight towards the resting Half-Orc as well. "Don't worry everyone, I'll get it!" he bellows as he rushes towards the large serpent.

[Private to DM FoxPaws: Peeking cautiously through the door, Elsa adopts the attitude and demeanor of a relatively submissive young woman. "I am ever so sorry to intrude. Is it Jaerlea? Yes, it must be, of course. My pardons, fine lady, my humble pardons. Elsa slowly walks into the warehouse, glancing rapidly from side to side like a scared mouse but in reality attempting to efficiently evaluate the contents and layout of the building. As she walks, she manages to stutter, "You-you-you see, madam...I am looking for something...someone actually. But I fear you are too busy? Please say you have just a moment of time, oh please! Then, in a rush, Elsa adds, "Tis my brother for whom I search! My brother! Is he here?" As she speaks, in an increasingly hysterical voice, she takes the opportunity to again scan the area before settling her gaze on the nearby slaves.]

Elsa then wrinkles her brow and asks, "Fate is done? Do you mean that those crates are filled with dead slaves?" Her voice once again rises towards hysterics and she continues, "Pray tell me, friend Jaerlea, that my brother is not within those crates!?" In a small tone, she adds, "He resembles me greatly."

Elsa re-enters the Inn just in time to see a soaked waitress slam a couple tankards down at a nearby table. Remaining in the doorway until realizing that nothing would come of the minor scene, she quickly finds a table and then pulls out a wonderfully constructed harp from her traveling pack. She begins to softly play some notes on the instrument and hum to herself, gently warming up both her harp and her throat.

As Elsa starts to actually sing a song, her talent quite evident already, one of the strings suddenly snaps with a sharp and slightly echoing twang. Smiling wrly, she pulls a new string from her pack while continuing to sing her song with a quiet yet clearly audible volume. By the time she has finished the refrain for the last time, the instrument is re-strung yet also returned to the traveling pack. Frowning to herself, she mutters, "Damn sea air."

Kuruk grunts at Ynvaar's observation of the waitress' "affection". After taking a swing from his own glass, he continues on to answer his question, to the best of his ability. "Not exactly sure how long Mezoar been missing. Ten days, maybe, I hear. Nyanzaru was last sighting. With many dangers in jungle, this seemed good place to start, the start of his adventure. Rona also been missing. Maybe she with Mezoar too. Samier might know, too; he is very wise. Wait here, I go ask."

Kuruk gets up and approaches Samier. Once close enough, he extends his arm which Samier grasps tightly in greeting. They converse quickly in whispered tones, with Kuruk not finding out a great deal, but enough to start with. Business concluded, Kuruk goes back to sit with Ynvaar to relay what he has learned.

[Private to DM FoxPaws: Where did he send the last expedition?]

Rising to her feet after completing a few more songs in an audible yet hushed voice, Elsa crosses the room to the staircase and climbs to the next level.

[Private to DM FoxPaws: Elsa will enter her room and lock the door, placing furniture against it to prevent a sneaky entrance. She will then attempt to sleep for a few hours, at least until night falls.]

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

Once done with Kuruk and his questions the innkeep turns to the departing singer and says "Girl, you sing well...though i would leave the harp in its case. Agree to sing for me in the evenings for a few hours and your room and board are covered." as she makes her way towards the stairs leading to the inns rooms.

[Private to Kuruk Jobtawk: The outlanders were hired to take medicines to a group of healers in the deep jungle, there is a camp of healers between the two lakes of the land. Your character is familiar with the healers, and the general idea of where the camp is...once in the area it will be easy for him to find traces of their presence. They had about 10 days to get to the camp, about an 8 day journey...its been about 12 now and a magic message has arrived demanding the needed medicines within the next 10 days as supplies are almost out now. He is pretty sure they took the overland route, following the River Tiryki for a brief while before heading into the 'safer' deep jungle.]

[Private to Elsa: Being an unknown to the area you are not given anything by way of coin, however the offer for room and board is real and you would of course keep anything given to you. Let me know when your ready to head out, i'll treat these next couple of days as different times for each of the players, once you head out I'll call it night for you, and most likely late day (3ish) for the others...this gives time for anyone else that might have been on your boat (new players from outside) to join you in the inn.]

[Private to Ynvaar: Is there anything you would like to know/do? The others are holding tight, or heading out late this evening for some covert work in the hopes of making some money....foolish outlander. Let me know what I can do to help keep everything running fun for you until we head out for the real adventure.]

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

After carefully listening to the half orc relate what he knows of the missing druids, Ynvaar drains his tankard in silence before replying: "
hmm. Well enough then, we shall find your missing friends, but perhaps it would be wise to see if anyone else in town has word of them".

Waving his empty tankard to Samir for another refill, Ynvaars' spirits seem markedly improved as he begins to drum his fingers upon the helm beside him in time to the minstrels delicate song, "might be an idea to add a few swords to our number too in case things get interesting out in the trees" he adds without looking back at Kuruk, his attention now fully upon the dark haired singer.

Oh! so she's a minstrel. and to think I thought she was a prostitute....now that could of been really embarrassing...

"Do you know 'Lament for the fallen'?" Ynvaar shouts across the taproom to the singer as she comes to the end of her song, banging his empty tankand on the table in appreciation as he does so.

[Private to DM FoxPaws: Actually I wouldn't mind knowing a bit more background about the two we are looking for, namely a bit more detail about what their quest was for and where they were headed (if we know this).
I didn't want to ask Kuruk in character in case his player didn't have the answers.
On a general note, I am happy to wander around town for a bit, searching for clues until the other party members join or to set out on the adventure as soon as everyone is ready

Niailee steps off the ship and starts winding through the crowd, wondering whether it would be best to secure a place to stay first, or to wander around a bit and enjoy the respite.
After all, it is pretty safe here, it's not as though they can easily follow me over the surface, and I doubt they could track me from the shore and know to swim over here. As long as there are no underground passages far below the water...

After just a little looking about, Niailee heads towards the large tavern.

After answering all of Kuruk's questins Samier goes back to the day to day operation of his tavern. As newcomers come and go he offers drinks, food and rooms, all for a price...only slightly out of balance with the main land, but you'll find that most things are more here. The singer continues her singing, the drinks continue to flow and the day tends towards early evening.

OOC: Let me know if anyone wants to come or go during the day, late this evening (game time) I'd like get everyone introduced and ready to party together. I know Elsa's plans, and Ynvaar's. Kuruk, Niailee, Rand do you have anything you'd like to do tonight yet, or you can stay at the tavern and get to know each other.

Elsa fixes her eyes on the speaker and then regards him with a sly, sidelong glance. With the air of someone trying to remember something once known but long forgotten, she tosses her hair and taps a finger on her chin. Then she calls across the room in a playful tone, "That depends, I suppose, on what exactly has fallen." With a grin, she deliberately focuses her gaze on a section of the warrior's body that is somewhere between his belly and his knees. She then adds with a wink, "Scores of maidens would certainly lament over such a loss..."

Perform Check = 27

Elsa sends another wicked smile towards the warrior and adds a look thats hard to read - perhaps considering or maybe promising? She then launches into a new song about a maiden, an ogre, and a halfling searching for love. And while the ditty had a few lame verses, her performance was anything but lamentable.

The night continues on and Elsa performs until the sun has set and darkness has enshrouded the inn. She rises to her feet and gives Samier a smile and nod on her way out of the Inn. On the way, she passes by the hulking warrior and gives him a pinch for good measure.

[Private to DM FoxPaws: Spot check = 2 YIKES!!!

Does Elsa know whether or not there is another door? She might try to walk around the building as much as possible to check out all possible entrances/exits.

[Private to Elsa: There is the bay door in the back that logs and crates were carried out of by the robed figures, then there is the front door. All of the slaves are gone now, and from what you can tell it is fairly quiet in this part of town. This wharf is not near the others (not far from them, but not like it is a part of all the others either). And Yikes is right, open yer eyes girl! Also, take 4gp in gold, silver and coppers from your new found fans. And finally feel free to interact with the others while we are doing this...we'll just consider everything outside the inn to be later in the night.]

[Private to DM FoxPaws: Figuring that the backdoor of the warehouse might provide cover from any prying eyes, Elsa strides in that direction and examines the portal. Hide = 10, Move Silently = 11. Its NOT my night for rolls! I get a 2, 3, and 4 in a row. (sinking feeling begins...)]

[Private to Elsa: For ease of use, I'm going to post into your posts for this, sorry.

* Striding to the towards the back of the warehouse it is not hard to elude prying eyes, most of the street is empty at this hour. A short bit of exercise has you over the rough fenced area and into the wharf area proper. Walking to the closed bay doors you are only a little started to hear the growling bark of what sounds to be a fairly large dog as your feet touch down. It sounds to come from the direction of the dock, but with the way sound is warped by the open waters its hard to say exactly where (you can do a listen check 15 to pin point a bit better, judging from what you remember you should have a round, maybe two, before the dog is to you.)

Wandering the tavern floor the barmaid takes care to stay out of the armor clad warriors way as she walks the floor, shooting him angry glances for his earlier dousing of her. As she makes her rounds she ensures that all drinks are full, and sleeping drunks are thrown out or woken to pay for a spot on the floor. In the back corner of the tavern a small group of peoples are cheering and weeping over the results of an odd card game of some sort.

[Private to DM FoxPaws: Thanks, that'd be great. rocpile@gmail.com]

Kuruk relays what he knows of the missing druids from Samier to Ynvaar.

The druids led a group of outlanders who were hired to bring medicine into the jungle to a group of healers. A message arrived in town saying they have not yet received the supplies. Samier still needs someone to bring the supplies to the healers, and he's willing to hire a group led by Kuruk. Kuruk knows how to get there.

During various introductions, Kuruk nods his name in acknowledgement whenever his name is mentioned. When Rand introduces himself, Kuruk believes he sees something familiar about the man, but the thought is fleeting and dissipates quickly. Though once he makes his overt motions, Kuruk's wisdom kicks in, and he remembers an important detail. "Hmmmm, I wonder what they are doing here." Out loud, he says, "Is good to meet all you. If you all support mission, I would like to go at first light. A very generous offer you offer Samier, but I do this not for the money, though I will accept if you insist."

OOC Feel free to continue to post, I'm just going to post the evening details. If your going to continue last nights post please post in the subject line that it is for the day or night. just for ease of reading, thanks everyone!

As dusk moves towards night, and night towards late night most of the patrons of the open air tavern begin to make their way to either homes or rooms above. Samier begins to close up his small tavern, lowering a cleverly hidden catch to lock the bar away from anyone that might wander in during the night, he also lowers and secures the curtained walls, raised during the cooler (if you want to call it that) evening. Heading towards your rooms each of the new companions is a little suprised to see a thin silken net covering their beds, but soon comes to accept, and enjoy the complete lack of stinging insects that actually get through those nets. The relative cool of the evening is all to soon replaced by the heat of day, which quickly awakens everyone that hasn't already come down to partake of the light meal of fruits and breads that Samier is serving today.

*** OOC feel free to hit the shops, most metal weapons/armors don't exist in this part of the world, so your going to have a hard time with anything like a sword or battle axe, however axes, daggers, shortswords and the like are around, the last not to common though. Let me know in a PM if anyone is buying anything and we'll begin heading out when you all are ready.

[Private to Elsa: To keep the others interested I'm going to move forward, you and I can continue your night time adventure in private messages, we'll get you squared away with that dog, and who, if anyone, is inside that warehouse then you can loot whatever might still be left inside.]

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

The early morning light streamed through the open window of Ynvaars' room to reveal a scene of utter carnage. Brestplate, vambrace and helm were all strewn about the floor of the tiny room, having apparently been dropped wherever he happened to be standing as they were shed, the insect netting that should of hung down from above the bed was wound tightly around one leg and an upturned pitcher of water in one corner told their own sorry tale of last nights revelry.

For the first time since he was ordained, Ynvaar was less than enthusiastic to don his armour. The half plate that had saved his hide on countless occasions and that had always been such a blessing now seemed something of a curse in the opressive heat of Chult as Ynvaar Knelt and began to pray.
[Private to DM FoxPaws: Cast Endure Elements]
Feeling invigorated as he always did after his morning prayers Ynvaar made a cursory effort to clean both himself and the room as best he could lest he incur the wrath of another of the taverns' serving maids, before making his way down to the taproom below to meet his comrades.
[Private to DM FoxPaws: While I am waiting for the others to appear I will check my gear over to make sure I am ready to go (and see if I "dropped anything" in lasts nights ale soaked stupor)]

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

Sweating began to bead on Rand before the sun even crested the horizon. Lying there in bed Rand stares at the ceiling Gonna be a hot one today. With arms outsretched to the sides and his legs open enough to let some air reach them helays as still as possible to cut down on the heat. Shouldn't havhad that last ale. Man my mhead hurts. Slowly he stirs to life. Lifting his bug net over his head he sits on the side of the bed not wanting to move for fear of causing more heat and the pounding in his head would get worse. Standing in nothing but his shortpants he mindlessly walks towards the water bowl to wash his face. On the way he absentmindedly scratches his backside and yawns. Splashing the luke warm water over his face brings a moment of relief, but only a moment. Drying himself off he dresses himself as quickly as he can before he starts to sweat again. Slipping his leather armor over his cotton shirt Rand grabs his backpack, stuffed with gear, inlcuding his own bug net which is nearly popping out. Next to his pack lie his sword and short spear. Holding the short spear in both arms he looks at it remembering times past. I really should learn how to properly use this thing if I am gonna carry it around. Buckling his sword to the backside of his pack he stows the spear next to the sword and makes hism way down for some food.
Breakfast wasn't really what he wanted, but knows all to well that without something in the morning his energy level is usually too low to be of any use until the sun hits it's high point. Rand picks at the fruit and bread while he sips on some lukewarm goats milk.

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

Elsa continues her nighttime stroll, glancing here and there in the moonlit night. Every so often, when no one is looking, she frolicks a bit.

[Private to DM FoxPaws: Listen = 20 Thats more like it!

IC
Elsa scans the darkness and soon realizes that she can't discern any shapes. Rather than waste anymore time, she instead cocks her head so that her hearing is better attuned to the angle from which the initial growl was made. Getting a good sense of where the dog currently is, Elsa quickly pulls a scroll from her pouch and readies it for casting.

OOC
If Elsa's Listen check is not good enough to exactly pinpoint the dog, then prepare a ready action. Once the dog is visible and in range, 5 foot step away from it (staying within range) and cast Sleep on it from the scroll.

If Elsa's Listen check is good enough to exactly pinpoint the dog, then forget the ready action and just cast sleep on it from the scroll.

DC = 17, using bardic music to enhance effect.
]

[Private to Elsa: With a soft whimper the dog goes down in a heap, softly snuffling in its sleep. Looking around the area you neither see nor hear anything else in the area. (damn will checks, missed it by 2 :P)]

Eventually, Niailee stirs. It took a few minutes for her body to register the sunlight and wake up, but when she did, she was quickly on her feet.

So.... warm... I'll never get used to this, I just know it.

Acting a little more slowly now, due to the heat, she pours her waterbowl over her head to get her hair in a state where it can be brushed to some degree, and then mops at herself with a cloth before donning her usual clothing, abandoning most of the usual layers.

I know I wanted a little warmth and sun back then, but now... I suppose I'm too used to the cold. Need to fix that.

Everything else is stuffed into the haversack, and Niailee is soon ready to greet the day and meet up with the others. She makes her way to the bar to get some fruit to eat.

Elsa sighs softly to herself.

[Private to DM FoxPaws:

Strolling slowly over to where the dog lies sleeping, Elsa removes the light pick from her belt with deliberation. She takes aim at where the animal's jugular vein ought to be and then calmly drives the point into the target with all her tiny might. Poor beast. Trained to kill outside the hunt. At least it won't be bothering me again. These thoughts run through her mind as she wipes the blood from her weapon and replaces it at her side. Now for that door.

Damage = 15. If that wasn't enough to kill it outright, Fort save DC to survive = 25.

OOC: let's get that Will Save DC higher! A girl's gotta survive, eh? :)
]

[Private to Elsa: With barely a whimper the dog breathes its last with the pick driven through its throat. Turning from the dead beast you see that the large doors are closed, and quiet large. The double doors stand at least 12' high and nearly as wide with two 6' doors secured together. You see no latch, or handles for that matter, surmising that it must be pushed open from the inside...perhaps with luck that its not locked from inside and enough pull you might be able to open it enough to squeeze inside.

OOC

BTW, if you want to join the group in the jungle adventure now would be the time to start double posting...this little nighttime adventure can continue at the same time as the main adventure. If you want to remain in town then we'll open up a board just for you and I.

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

Kuruk is slowly roused from his deep slumber by the rays of sunshine streaming onto face. He streches and yawns loudly in bed. Slowly he gets up and dons his armor, not even glancing at the water bowl in the corner of his room. It finally occurs to him to check what time it is, so Kuruk takes a gander out his window, and realizes the sun is a lot higher than he would have liked to see. He quickly gathers the rest of his belongings and heads downstairs, surely to find many patrons up and about at this hour.

Sure enough, everyone he met from the night before is up waiting, with serious scowls on their faces. Kuruk makes a hasty apology, "Sorry. Me no sleep in comfy bed for some time. Everyone ready to go? Oh, I almost forget. Remember nice net around bed? Bugs in town not bad, bugs in jungle very nasty, but net usually keep them out. Okay?" Kuruk grabs a handful each of bread and fruit, which he devours quickly, and then makes his way towards the door once everyone is ready to go.

Outside the bar sits a man that doesn't quite look like a native, but seems comfortable enough around the city. Around him sits a group of children, mostly around eight to twelve years of age, and they sit quietly, a wonder in of itself. The man talks, and they pay him attention, and most of the adults can tell that he is either a professional or at least a very gifted amatuer storyteller. Bits of the conversation come through the tavern, and you can tell the story is at a close.

"The green dragon looked down at the small man with, not a gleam, but a look of wonder in his eyes. This one man had twarted his plans with but a single word, and he was but a normal man, not even a mage. 'Now, dragon. You will honor our bargin, will you not?' The dragon's eyes change back to their usual maliciousness and he smiles an evil smile. 'Of course, human. I will honor our deal, if you but stay still,' the dragon says as he opens his mouth as if to yawn. A massive cloud of gas spilled forth from the mouth of the beast, and the poor human could not escape it. The cavern was full of the horrible smoke, and the human died after only a few seconds of this breathing in the fumes. The green dragon smiled as he tore the items of value from the human and slid the piece of meat down his throat."

"Now, what did you learn?"

With a gasp and a shake of her head one woman graps up her child and stalks off, muttering about horrible stories to tell to small children, and something about nightmares for a week. The other children laugh at their friend being dragged away while one chimes in "I know the lesson, aways take a sword, not a word to fight a dragon!" the small child declairs, sure that this was the lesson to be learned from the now finished story.

With a smile and a pro-offered glass Samier tells you "Come Daemon, leave the children alone with your stories of dragon death. I asked before and I ask again, work for me, your stories will get more wine flowing. Now I have a woman working the afternoons, with her music and your voice I could make a fortune here!" he says with a smile.

Daemon shakes his head with amusement as the child is carried off, but smiles at the child who answered. "Close, very close. Some dragons are good, however, and I'd hate for you to kill a bronze or gold. Never trust a dragon, my dear children. For if you do, you'll not get what you expect." He stands up as the barkeeper finally comes out and hands him a glass. The height of the man is impressive, almost as tall as a small giant. But his clothing hangs loosely about his body, yet it is sized to fit a creature the girth of an elf. This man is thin, up to the point where it would affect his health.

Looking down at Samier, he pushes the glass away. "You know as well as I that I never drink the vile liquid you serve here," Daemon says with a smile. "And, as I said before, no one will have to pay to hear me, and I certainly will not accept any coin for talking. But tell me more of this woman. New to town, is she? I've seen no one that can meet my skill with a harp since I last stopped by, and I can't believe that people have forgotten it so quickly. She must be good to bring in more customers." A glint gathers in Daemon's eye and he leans down to Samier and lowers his voice so the remaining children can't hear. "Or, Sam, is it perhaps more than her music?"

Still offended that after all this time of your not accepting his offer of a drink Samier grins as he remembers the young singer from last night. "Perhaps it is a bit more than her music that brings in the customers. Come in Daemon, meet the lass, I'm sure you'll see why she brings in the customers."

"I doubt it, Samier, I truly doubt it." Daemon follows the barkeeper, stooping a bit lower to get inside the tavern. Looking around at the clients, he makes a point of stopping and searching each female before turning to Samier and nodding his head toward one. "Is she the one?"

Not sure any other modifiers. Maybe a few for working along so many females in the harem, but what you say goes.

"Well, as long as I'm waiting..." Daemon sits down at a table and pulls the harp down. Looking at it critically for a few moments, the Calishite tests a few of the strings and tunes them until they meet his expectations. "Hopefully I won't scare your drinkers off, sadik." Daemon begins to play a song, one of sadness and torment. He does not add the words, but simply lets the beutiful music flow through the room.

Coins are tossed your way by way of apprecation for the soft melodies you are playing. Samier goes about his duties, serving drinks, taking orders, keeping people happy as they drink the day away. Towards the end of your performance Samier comes to you with a request "Daemon, my friend, I have a problem. I have sent some people into the jungle to finish a delievery for me, however I did not tell them what all to deliever. They are to find and deliever some potions and herbs to the Healers Compound in the middle of the jungle. Do you know of where I speak? between the two great lakes? Yes, you know the place, I can see that you do. Will you find them, and let them know?"

"Samier, didn't I tell you before 'Don't get ahead of yourself?' You're pretty lucky that I came along, or you'd be running out in the jungle yourself." Daemon lets out a soft chuckle at the thought of the barkeep running through the jungle to find his own employees. "But, yes, I'll do it. Leet me rest a bit, though, I just got back into town about an hour ago, and I'd like to reaquaint myself before leaving again."

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

Daemon looks around the tavern once more and speaks to Samier before leaving to go back into the city to see what he could buy, and sell. "Samier, my old friend, could you happen to tell me if there is any more elves that are in the town at the moment? And, I will not have as much time to do the services of last time, so please don't send anyone to me. Except for maybe this singer of yours. I'd like to see how good she really is, or if it's just you getting customers in? Just think on it, sadik. I should be back within two hours and ready to leave." Daemon turns on his heels and ducks under the door and walks around the town, perusing the merchandise.

[Private to DM Foxpaws: Daemon needs an elven trainer for his PrC, and he'll be ready to take it once I use a few more xps on him.

Also, he'll sell his wand of Magic Missiles. It usually sells for 150 gold pieces, but maybe a diplomacy or some other chack can raise that?

Daemon searches the area until he finally finds the old magic shop he saw last time. He walks in and glances around before moving around the shop and perusing the items and waits on the mage who owns the shop. Once found, Daemon will move nearer to the mage and open his vest to show off a beautiful wand. "Good morning, my good fellow. I've happened to come across a wand in my travels, and the wizard who used it seemed to shoot spell bolts from the tip. As you might be able to tell, it would be almost useless to me, and I think you might want to test it out, or even add it to your magnificent display here. But, be sure, I am trying to give this to a good owner, but I am so stupid to give it away for free. Might I suggest two hundred gold and the promise of a good customer in the future?"

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

Wandering the familiar streets of Port Nyanzaru you reacquaint youself with familiar sites and faces. At one old magic shop, never really the best of shops, but they suffice for what is needed, you are able to unload an old wand, for a more than fair price after some tough nogeations. [Private to Daemon: He counters with 150, and settles on 180 due to your good bartering skills] Your time spent in the shop is more than you had hoped, checking into odds and ends. As you are leaving you run into a fellow half-elf, a stocky woman...she would never be considered beautiful, but her movements tell of a dancers grace, mixed with a fighters gait. She eyes you as you pass, an arched eyebrow at seeing someone of elven heritage wearing a sword and playing in a mage's shop.

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

Daemon glances around the shop and feels the comfortable weight of the coins on his chest. Yet nothing interested the picky customer, and he simply wished the mage a good day and left. Daemon spies the half-elven woman and is overjoyed to finally meet an elf, or part elf. He greets her with a simple lyric and stands by to see what he might learn. "'A light has come down from the sky and enlightened my path.' Forgive me, I am not used to elven kin inside this jungle, and here I see one before I leave. What might your name be? Mine is Daemon, a singer of songs and teller of tales."

[Private to DM Foxpaws: FYI: Daemon is human with one grandparent a half-elf. It might be difficult to place him as an elf if it were not for his starved frame.]

In Elven "Greetings Daemon, you must be new to town. I am Melosa, from Fort Beluarian on the northern coast. It has been a long time since I have heard the song of Lathander...and such an old verse of it as well! I myself have been known to recite a lyric or two....though mostly I tend to stick to poems....I havn't the voice for singing to anything but the drunkest of crowds." she says this last with a smile that brightens her plain face. Entering the store she quickly finishes her business, acquiring a fine rapier that glows with a gentle blue light. Leaving the inn she asks if you'd like to join her for a wine...she claims to know of a decent tavern...that turns out to be your friend Samier's....seems he's been holding out on you, with a supply of good Halruan wine that your new friend pays way to much for two glasses of.

Re: Chult: Port Nyanzaru

Daemon is surprised that she would recognize any type of verse so old. Of course he would, he's made it his job, but she coud not be quite so old, could she. Falling back to the fluent tongue of elven instead of relying on the crude speech of Common, he talks. "It is a pleasure, Melosa. And while I'm not new to the town, I rarely stop for more than a few days at a time. I prefer poetry much more as well, but singing and making music is not to bbe discouraged."

Daemon follows her to the tavern and manages to keep his knowledge to himself. He couldn't refuse a gift, and simply drinks the wine in contemplative silence for a while. Then, after a few minutes, he speaks up in the elvish language again. "What brings you away from the fort and down to the port, Melosa?"

Daemon listens with no sign of impatience crossing his face, and he simply looks and listens to her tales, adding a few details when neccessary. Finally, she quiets down enough for Daemon to ask a question of his own. "Melosa, do you know of any other elves, or even half-elves, in the jungle. Where they would be located? And have you ever heard of anything known as a spellsinger. An elven bard with the powers of music unmatched by all else? I once heard of it from an old friend up in Calimshan, and I have no one else who could ever tell me anything different."

"Other elves in the jungle? Yes, there are others...in the deep jungle, if you can find them, there are wild ones...not many, but they are there if you know where to look. As for your 'Spellsinger' I have not heard the term before, but we have an elf that stops in from time to time at the Fort, his music has always had a magical effect....a beautiful voice that one has, the likes of which I have never heard. If anyone could weave the power of magic into thier songs I would bet he could. Se'vash is his name, he stops into the fort every few months, then it is back to Amn for him and then to points unknown til the next year." she replies, still thinking on the new term, and of any other elves in the area.

"Slaves? They are everywhere, though most seem to be shipped out of Port Castigar, a Calish port. I'm sorry, I must be going...Please, if you are ever near the fort stop by, I would like to spend more time with you...just not today any longer. With that the woman gets up, tosses a few coins to Samier and slips out the door, presumably to make the long trek back to her fort.

Once she has left, Samier steps over, a sly smile on his face. "My friend, it does me good to see you with a woman! But, alas she is gone and I still have a need.... I have sent some small group of fellows out to find something, and then deliever that something for me. I know they are headed towards the healers camp in the deep jungle...I think you remember the one..." he says, aluding to some past need of yours for thier services. "If you could catch up to them, I also need this taken to those healers....it pains me to do it, but I must offer some sort of recomp for my lateness." That said he pulls out a small pouch of coins, it thuds like a small fortune when he drops it onto the table. "I did not know those who went earlier...if they could be trusted, but you my friend I know will not cheat me. Once that pouch has disappeared he also drops a smaller pouch, with clinks onto the table with a nice heft. This one for your troubles.
