Well, you'd do better to come up with a plan soon, since as I already said, it won't be long before I ask you about your long-term commitments... although it's fair to say that those questions will be primarily fluff-oriented, so you might still vary your plans on the mechanical front afterwards, at least to some extent. :)

...When you come out of work into a new OOC thread, and find that even while not here you STILL end up the first non-GM poster in a new thread :P

Nothing: Since your whole theme is based around shadows, might i persuade you to look at this?

http://spheresofpower.wikidot.com/sphere-arcanist

It's a class with incredible fluidity, and one of the Exploits you can pick is actually quite Shadow themed:

quote:
Nidalese Shadow Veil (Su) (Advanced Class Origins pg. 7): By expending 1 point from her arcane reservoir, an arcanist can pull a veil of shadows around her, making her more difficult to spot and strike. The arcanist gains concealment (20% miss chance) and a +5 bonus on Stealth checks. This effect lasts a number of rounds equal to 1 + the arcanist’s Charisma bonus.

Of course, this assumes you're not already a sphere arcanist, but given that you have little experience of the system, the ability of a sphere arcanist to basically swap out talents (one per 2 arcanist levels) every 8 hour rest would allow you ICly to try out a bunch of things without the GM needing to step in and alter your sheet :)

In reply to Adrika (msg # 7):

Really trying to make my life difficult here... you do realize that I would house-rule a ton of limitations on the "I can get any ability in the game I want" abilities, yes? Just ask Carmen if you don't believe me.

But really, I think Nothing's class suits her much better than an Arcanist would - Arcanists are supposed to be people with native magical powers who make research to improve said powers, whereas Nothing is currently in a class whose entire focus is on using subtle and hard-to-detect psychic powers to spook people and manipulate them from... well, the shadows, metaphorically speaking. You know, tying into her fluff and theme.

Just my opinion on it - I won't stop Nothing if she wants to go into Arcanist, I just wanted to make it clear that "I'll allow anything so long as it's not game breaking" does means "if I think something is game breaking, I'm gonna limit it significantly".

In reply to Security Feature (msg # 8):

Hey, they're called 'Exploits' by the class for a reason :P

Kidding aside however, i already figured it'd be limited to just the Exploits you could get for an Arcanist, so Nothing could mix and match those, not... everything. So with the once per long rest thing it'd boil down to something akin to a prepared caster, only instead of spells they're slotting class abilities.

If Nothing's happy with the class she's got, then i'll be the last to complain about it, what matters most of all is that everyone's having fun. :)

I think I'll just stick with what I've got - I'm probably gonna be spending every available Talent pick on stuff in the Sphere(s) I'm already interested in (GM already knows my plans, such as they are, regardnig such things ;)). There are far more cool-looking things than I'm gonna have chances to pick them, so I'll have to try to whittle down the choices based on circumstance. And Rule of Cool, naturally :D.

I will say, however, that what you see of my combat tactics thus far (such as I've been able to demonstrate) is likely to be the ongoing theme for the remainder of the game - Sneaky Bastard Tactics to hide and use creepy powers to nerf enemies and make them easier for you guys to hit. In Fourth Edition terms I'm pretty solidly in the "Controller" role - messing with bad guys by applying penalties and negative status effects and stuff, rather than directly attacking their hp. I'll leave that to the people with the fireballs and big axes or whatever ;).

Same goes for me. Witches are Controllers too, but most of their powers have a range of 30 ft or so and are single target, so i'll likely be a lot closer to melee than you'll be. There's two Hexes i've got my sights on, so i can just grab those during regular class levelup picks, and i've got a good idea on where to put my feats. Not much on magic aside from what i already have, but making the best of what i got. :)

Between the two of us, the rest of the party won't be having a lot of trouble hitting their opponents :P

Indeed; and don't forget that Lilah is a bard, so you're really gonna be able to hit a lot harder than your level would suggest... you might not have too much offence (at least, if we d not included NPCs like Grumblejack), but what you have is definitely gonna be pretty deadly.

I’m not sure WHAT role I play tbh since I try to do a bunch of roles. I gravitate towards the Skill Monkey, but also the Face (I have had zero chance to show this but I ADO have the Mind sphere). In combat I’m the striker (which will only get better as I level up)

I'm sure you'll grow into your role as the game goes on - the challenges will be many and varied, so I'm sure everyone will find their own niche eventually. :)

Well, as with every other player, I'm always open to discuss any ideas or doubts you might have in PMs, so if you want to talk about the pro and cons of going with it as your level-up choice, I'll happily help with it! ^_^

Just as an added extra, my description above only really relates to combat, which is something I don't intend on getting into too often. Sure, it's DnD, so there will inevitably be battles, but we're gonna be working on bringing down a kingdom here - I'm the Sneaky Bastard espionage type. Why fight them yourselves when you can mess with their heads and get them to fight each other or something? >:D

Anyway, not gonna really discuss too much more "behind the scenes" stuff on my character, but the stuff I've said so far could probably be vaguely figured out based on what you've see. Anything else, you gotta find out IC :D.

What the game will exactly be about will become clearer after you make it to the mansion and meet your sponsor, but you can think of this whole section as an introduction: you will generally be facing situation where you're outnumbered and the slightest mistake will cause the good guys to come at you weapons bared, and in general your goals will be assigned to you by a mix of circumstances and the marching orders from your patron, but how you go about executing them is up to you - as you saw in the Branderscar escape, you could have definitely fought your way out of it, and you could have also gone full stealth and hurt no-one, but instead you went for a mix of the two. In general, that's how things are gonna work.

Indeed! :)

By the way, completely unrelated to the game, but in case anybody is a Bleach fan, I'm writing a fanfic for it on the Sufficient Velocity forums called "Throne of Heavens". It's in its initial stages yet, but I'm so very thirsty for feedback, so if any of you is interested, feel free to check it out! ^_^

Yeah, sorry about that - Lilah left me a PM saying that some personal problems were keeping her from posting through the weekend; she should be able to post today. Please be patient just a little bit more for her sake, ok? She really does wants to play, I know this.

No probs, asking is what the OOC is for.

Good to hear Lilah's still interested (feels odd saying this as it's only been a couple of days! ^^; ) as I had some stuff in mind for later.

Nothing bad, I promise... :P

First this battle needs to be over, after that we'll see if i can trigger it :3

Oh, by the way, Nothing? Not sure what your stance is towards feat suggestions, but considering you're focusing on debuffs and fields of darkness, have you looked at these two feats?

quote:
Nightmare Fist

You are even more deadly in magical darkness.

Prerequisite: Improved Unarmed Strike, Intimidate 1 rank, ability to create magical darkness.

Benefit: While fighting within an area of magical darkness, you gain a +2 bonus on damage rolls with unarmed strikes, or a +4 bonus against opponents that are shaken, frightened, or panicked. You also gain a +2 morale bonus on Acrobatics and Intimidate checks.

quote:
Nightmare Weaver

You can use your ability to create magical darkness to terrorize enemies.

Prerequisite: Improved Unarmed Strike, Nightmare Fist, Intimidate 2 ranks, ability to cast darkness.

Benefit: By spending a full-round action to cast darkness, you can also make Intimidate checks to demoralize all foes in the spell’s initial area.

Special: This feat counts as Dazzling Display for purposes of qualifying for Deadly Stroke and Shatter Defenses.

Makes you hit a little harder in your own darkness, and the requirements are easy to hit, just need Improved Unarmed Strike. Fun Fact: Any opponent you've successfully demoralized (at a +2 for you) is shaken, so you'd be on +4 damage fighting unarmed, which is nothing to scoff at, while they'll be on -2 attack against you. Even less if they can't see in the dark. Shatter Defenses would also make them flatfooted against your attacks.

It's a bit more meleeish than you'd probably have in mind, but it can be a great panic button if used well.

Yeah, not intending to go melée. Squishy caster is gonna be staying back - my mental stats are substantially better than my physical ones, shall we say ;). Well, my Dex isn't bad, actually. The other two, not so much :P. Anyway, I made a shortlist of Feats I liked the look of when I was first going through char gen, so I'll probably work through those for now. If the level cap is only six, I imagine that level-ups are gonna be few and far between. I wonder how that works for stuff that would normally increase pase level six? Like, I get some extra class features (or improvements upon existing ones) at levels higher than that. Do we just not get those at all?

I thought I explained this already?

Well, it won't hurt to explain it again.

You get one level up every 22 XP. Once you are level 6th, you no longer gain levels, and instead gain 1 feat for every 11 XP you gain after that. I am more than open to letting people select specific class features from the higher level of a class they have through homebrew feats - imagine, if you can, a feat called "Additional Class Feature" with a prerequisite of "lv 6ht in Class X" that has the benefit "You gain this specific class feature of class X" and the special note "this feat can be taken multiple type for different class features, or to improve ones selected previously".

You are gonna keep growing forever, by continuing to get feats until the game is over, you just won't be progressing your numbers (HP, BAB, CL, Saves, Skill ranks cap etc.) very much above level 6th - you might a bit, through specific feats, but the point is that it would be a much slower progression.

Considering how long this campaign is supposed to be if played to completion, you should have reached level 6th by the time you're one third of the way through, if not earlier.

Is that clear, or do I need to explain it further?
